Determining Rural Church Growth And Sustainability Based On Population Trends And Outreach, Kimberly Ford

Education Projects

Farmington Baptist Church is a church located in rural Davie County, North Carolina. The church’s mission is focused on children, community, and culture. Due to consistent growth of the church population over the past 5 years, the church will soon outgrow its current space and needs to determine if they are to invest in a new building. The purpose of this project was to help determine if the growth of the church is sustainable based on both external and internal factors, and if so, what was the number of members they should anticipate accommodating with a new sanctuary building. External …

Middle School Choir Class Advocacy, Kara Vombrack Jan 2022

Middle School Choir Class Advocacy, Kara Vombrack

Graduate Research Showcase

This research is based on a survey given to surrounding middle school choir teachers regarding if their choir is a class or not in their district. The study looks into the benefits of having choir during the day and as a graded class. The study also analyzes school schedules and how they affect choir during the day. Choral advocacy is addressed and suggestions are given for how to grow a program that isn’t a class; which is the current problem at my school. This study also addresses how choir directors can gain more choral advocacy in their district and increase …

Fastidiosa, Jean-Mar Caimi, Valentina Piccinni, Tiffany Jones Jan 2022

Fastidiosa, Jean-Mar Caimi, Valentina Piccinni, Tiffany Jones

Photography

228 pages : illustrations (some color). First discovered in the touristic Gallipoli region in 2013, the bacteria Xylella Fastidiosa has rapidly been killing olive trees in Salento over the past several years. The disease is spread by sap sucking insects and stops the flow of water and nutrients through the xylem vessels, causing trees to die from the inside out. In an effort to contain further outbreaks, EU authorities dictate that all trees within 100 metres of one affected must be destroyed, whether it is infected or not. The result is economic catastrophe in a region where olive oil production …

"Someone Was Bound To Crack": Responses To The 1980s Farm Crisis, Dean Schmit Jan 2022

"Someone Was Bound To Crack": Responses To The 1980s Farm Crisis, Dean Schmit

Senior Seminars and Capstones

This paper examines gendered differences in how Minnesotan farmers attempted to maintain control over their lives during the 1980s farm crisis. Although left-wing activism, rightwing activism, religion, and suicide may seem like disparate responses, they all came from the same impulse to maintain control. These responses were highly influenced by community values, particularly the ideas that hard work would be rewarded and men should not show their emotions. Religion offered a sense of community and solace to farmers; activism – although a relatively rare response – offered solutions; and suicide offered an escape. Women found more comfort in religion than …

From Revolution To Rejection: Tejanos And The Road To The Civil War, Alexandra Leonor Jan 2022

From Revolution To Rejection: Tejanos And The Road To The Civil War, Alexandra Leonor

Student Research

The relationship between white Anglo-Southerner settlers and Mexican people in Texas directly impacted the participation of Mexican Americans in the American Civil War. This relationship was one of equal participation in the Texas Revolution; afterward, the racist discrimination of Anglo settlers led to Mexican people withdrawing from military service during the Mexican-American War, though they held important roles in the Texas Republic. During the Civil War, Mexican people largely fought for the Confederacy in an effort to earn respect and equality and avoid the Anglo settlers’ racism and violence. The race-based class system brought from the United States by the …

Quaker Religious Thought

ABOUT THIS ISSUE

There are moments of change and turbulence and anxiety and outrage that punctuate our lives, whether anticipated or not. There are also times when we, as a human community, are confronted on a corporate level with shared experiences of anxiety and ambiguity, anger and angst. As I think back on what has transpired since I wrote the editorial for the Spring issue of QRT in February, I am struck by how quickly our lives can change and how suddenly we as a society may be called to adapt to new realities, like wearing a face mask, and …

Review Of Mock, M. S. Worthy: Finding Yourself In A World Expecting Someone Else, (Herald Press, 2018)., Jessica Kershner Jan 2022

Review Of Mock, M. S. Worthy: Finding Yourself In A World Expecting Someone Else, (Herald Press, 2018)., Jessica Kershner

Quaker Religious Thought

The Christian message should be a simple one. God loves us. We accept that love and then are able in return to love God and the world. God loves, we accept and then love in return. “What does the Lord require of us but to do justice, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with our God.” So why does it have to be so complex? In Melanie Springer Mock’s book, Worthy, she dives in to many different ways Christian culture, literature, family and church expectations, and even sometimes our own messages about God, get in the way of the …

Review Of Marty Grundy, A Call To Friends: Faithful Living In Desperate Times (San Francisco: Inner Light Books, 2020), Lorraine Watson

Quaker Religious Thought

This short but timely book was written at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, which began in 2020 and continues today in 2022. It, along with the myriad of other ills facing our world, constitutes the desperate times during which Marty Grundy calls us to faithful living. She hearkens back to the early Quakers of the 1600s and their apparent knowledge of the “Truth that we are loved unconditionally and are called to live lives of integrity and love,” the antidote to “the horrible things we humans inflict on ourselves, on each other, on pretty much all living things, and …

Kalos, Emma Marie Bowden Jan 2022

Kalos, Emma Marie Bowden

2022 Symposium

My work, “Kalos”, is a unique composition made up of 3”x3” canvases with overall dimensions of 24”x30”. This series of acrylic paintings explores the boundaries within the photorealism technique in painting. For this painting, one 3”x3” canvas represents one corresponding square from the photorealism grid on the reference photo. The independent squares open new possibilities for viewer engagement and manipulation. The interactive piece encourages viewers to ponder the idea of beauty and how it can be manipulated.

Remote Analysis Capabilities Of Digitally Rendered Models Of Human Remains: Obtaining Osteometric Data & Assessing Pathology And Taphonomic Alteration - Using Non-Human Animal Remains As An Analogue, M. Elizabeth Dyess

2022 Symposium

Computed tomography (CT), photogrammetry, and laser surface scanning technologies have enabled remote, noninvasive, and non-destructive analysis of skeletal human remains in various contexts. Such technologies have found applications in the disciplines of osteoarchaeology, forensic anthropology, the medical sciences, and other related fields of inquiry. This presentation will discuss the accuracy and reliability of osteometric data obtained from digitally rendered models, as well as the clarity and level of detail attained. Such qualifying standards are essential if practitioners are to reliably assess pathology and taphonomic alteration to the specimens from which the scans are modeled. The suitability of each of the …

The War On Drugs And Its Legal Effects On Black Americans, Alexia L. Howard-Mullins Jan 2022

The War On Drugs And Its Legal Effects On Black Americans, Alexia L. Howard-Mullins

2022 Symposium

The differences in treatment between Black and white Americans in the past fifty years has been a topic of thought in the minds of political and sociological scholars since the inception of the War on Drugs in 1971. These differences in treatment may lead to discrimination legally, resulting in longer prison sentences and a higher proportion of Black Americans in prison. This study analyzes the results of the War on Drugs that led to disproportionate imprisonment of Black Americans, including mandatory sentencing laws, drug classifications, and discrimination within law enforcement and the legal system. This study will use primary sources …

An Inquiry Into Gradable Zero-Waste Apparel Design, Melanie Carrico, Sheri Dragoo, Ellen Mckinney, Casey Stannard, Colleen Moretz, Ashley Rougeaux-Burnes

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

he implementation of standardized grading production practices within the mass market has been challenging for scholars experimenting with zero-waste apparel design. The purpose of this research was to test the efficacy of the Carrico Zero-waste Banded Grading (CZWBG) technique, which utilizes bands inserted in strategic locations as a method of grading zero-waste patterns across various consumer categories. An additional purpose was to evaluate the ways in which this grading approach affected the aesthetic outcomes of garments across a size run, and to determine whether this method affected the overall design process of the designers involved. Through experimental research design, six …

Books Jesus Read: Learning From The Apocrypha, Robert F. Lay

Sacred Roots Spiritual Classics

In Books Jesus Read, Robert Lay takes his readers on a guided tour of the Apocrypha—Jewish history, stories, and wisdom written in the four hundred years between the Old and New Testaments. These are some of the writings Jesus and other first century Jews would have known. For anyone wanting to better understand Jesus and the New Testament, look no further than the books Jesus himself may have read.

This book provides a wonderful service in making the OT Apocrypha accessible to non-specialists. These ancient Jewish texts are rich devotionally, and they provide essential background for the proper interpretation …

The Perceived Impact Of Holotropic Breathwork: An Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis, Felipe Landaeta Farizo Jan 2022

The Perceived Impact Of Holotropic Breathwork: An Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis, Felipe Landaeta Farizo

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

Holotropic Breathwork (HB) is a method of self-exploration developed by Stanislav and Christina Grof. Research has only just begun to investigate the effects of HB, while the possible influence of the context and other features of HB within the experience and its impact have not been studied in depth. This qualitative study investigated the perceived impact of HB on 6 women and 6 men (ages 25-67) in Chile, using Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), an emergent method developed specifically to work with these types of subjective issues. Results revealed 10 major themes involving both intrapsychic and relational features prior, during and …
