Dream/Reality, Mercedes Llanos
Dream/Reality, Mercedes Llanos
Theses and Dissertations
Mercedes llanos explores the surreal aspect of dreams as they concern with waking life issues, mainly focusing on power-roles in domestic partnerships embedded in a South American patriarchal upbringing. In her dreams, she subconsciously navigates the repression of freedom firsthand experienced, and that of the transgenerational woman collective.
A Slippery Slope Of Resemblances, Lauren Clark
A Slippery Slope Of Resemblances, Lauren Clark
Theses and Dissertations
My studio has become an ecosystem. Plastics, linens and found objects are transformed with both “natural” and “artificial” dyes, pigments, and aggregates, until there is a co-corruption akin to an ecology. I am searching for an alternate relationship between phenomena, wonder and knowing.
Detritus And The Icon, Brian Madonna
Detritus And The Icon, Brian Madonna
Theses and Dissertations
Detritus and the Icon highlights the relationship between the figure and the monument, contrasting between the gravity of earth and the lightness of the Divine. My thesis exhibition of seven paintings, comprised of thirty seven panels, brings the banal into conversation with the age old endeavor of monument building.
Saturated Skies, Childhood Trophies, And Colorful Plants, Nicholas Norris
Saturated Skies, Childhood Trophies, And Colorful Plants, Nicholas Norris
Theses and Dissertations
My work presents interiors through the guise of memory while focusing on the sentimental objects within them. Through metaphors and signs I give form to certain events, sensations and out-of-perspective observations. Saturated skies, childhood trophies, and colorful plants find their place alongside decorated walls, floors, chairs, tables, rugs and beds.
Trees And Trees And Trees In Me, Areum Yang
Trees And Trees And Trees In Me, Areum Yang
Theses and Dissertations
Painting is a recording of my current psychology, and a window through which I can visualize my inner self. My painting won't make my anxiety go away, but it will allow me to work with my emotion and put it in a specific place, so it doesn't control my life.
Theater And Spectacle Of The Inside, Dante G. Cannatella
Theater And Spectacle Of The Inside, Dante G. Cannatella
Theses and Dissertations
Dante Cannatella’s work is about when the landscape reclaims the city, when the lines between inside and outside are blurred, and how lives play out against the truth of uncertainty and impermanence. His gestural paintings reflect growing up amidst the destruction and rebuilding of New Orleans. Set against a backdrop of acid yellows, muddy pinks and greys, the figures are caught in the powerful forces of nature, commerce, and mass thought that shape both their inner worlds and outer realities.
Long Time, Jacob V. Reed
Long Time, Jacob V. Reed
Theses and Dissertations
Jake Reed’s work is driven by the idea that architectural ornament can be imbued with meaning not native to its construction or use. To find that meaning, he deconstructs and reassembles elements from the architectural and ornamental histories he studies, using the growing climate crisis as a generative framework.
Christ And American Culture- Some Biblical Reflections, Paul Raabe
Christ And American Culture- Some Biblical Reflections, Paul Raabe
Concordia Pages
Going beyond H. Richard Neibuhr’s famous paradox model on “Christ and Culture,” Dr. Paul Raabe contends for a biblical, dynamic tension that exists between the culture and the faith. Using the image of a house, Raabe explores four “rooms” : (1) Christianity affirms culture in some respects; (2) Christianity opposes culture in some respects; (3) Christianity leavens culture in some ways; and (4) Christianity uses cultural forms to communicate its message. Each of the four rooms needs to be lived in for maintaining the tension presented in the Scriptures as a faithful witness to the lordship of Christ.
You Will Be Loved: A Mixtape, Ariana M. Rosales
You Will Be Loved: A Mixtape, Ariana M. Rosales
Dissertations and Theses
The following mix-genre portfolio represents my work in literary translation, nonfiction, and fiction writing. These poems, essays, and stories explore the role of gender and sexuality in familial and interpersonal relationships in the social, historical, and political context of contemporary Bolivian and American cultures. The characters inhabiting this collection experience alienation while seeking belonging and meaningful connections in the face of an uncertain political future. These pieces explore themes such as marginalization of queer people, the subjugation and closeting of the indigenous in the face of mestizaje, and the colonial legacy shared by Bolivia and the United States.

Identifying And Transcribing Meter And Rhythmic Elaboration Of The Percussion In Some Of Egyptian Zar Songs, Nahla Mattar
Journal of Art, Design and Music
More functional music transcription is needed for the folkloric Egyptian ritual zar. This study attempts to unlock some of the complex rhythmic elaboration the zar, especially bi-meter and fluid emblement of the percussive ink line in each instrument. Although the folkloric nature of zar music, but unlike the usual simple temporal structure of such music, it is very complex. In transcribing such oral musical tradition, one is always faced with difficulty regarding announce music flow nature of folkloric music flow and writing it within the tradition of notation developed mainly to function for western classical music. The sample …

Demography And The Political Destiny Of Florida During The Second Spanish Period, Abel Poitrineau
Demography And The Political Destiny Of Florida During The Second Spanish Period, Abel Poitrineau
Florida Historical Quarterly
The twenty-year period of British sovereignty of the Floridas came to an end September 3, 1783, when the treaty concluding the American Revolution was signed at Versailles, France. The Treaty of Paris, as it was known, gave the Spanish crown control of a large portion of North America. Spain retained sovereignty over the Louisiana Territory, and the Spanish flag once more flew over the Floridas as it had from 1565 to 1763. However, the restoration of Spanish rule in the Floridas, so important for the control of the Bahama Channel, was at best precarious. Spain’s military weakness and the financial …
John Ellis, King's Agent, And West Florida, Julius Groner
John Ellis, King's Agent, And West Florida, Julius Groner
Florida Historical Quarterly
In the short though not uneventful life of the British colony of West Florida, major figures came and went with disruptive frequency. Three royal governors and two lieutenant governors headed the resident administration of the colony in eighteen years, but all of them enjoyed the administrative stability provided in London by the royal agent for West Florida, John Ellis. For a dozen years this distinguished scientist and modest bureaucrat presided over the parliamentary grant upon which West Florida depended and disbursed its funds in such a judicious manner as to restrain gubernatorial fiscal exuberance, maintain necessary public functions, and satisfy …
Florida Slave Narratives, Gary R. Mormino
Florida Slave Narratives, Gary R. Mormino
Florida Historical Quarterly
In October 1939, the Jacksonville Journal published a story describing a federally-funded project going on in Florida that would have a far-reaching impact on future scholarship. “On disks that time can’t destroy, a sapphire needle scratches the songs of the longshoreman and waterfront workers which, because of mechanical equipment and the jook organ, are fast disappearing.“ The paper not only detailed the technology that was being utilized, it pointed out the importance of the technicians, in this case, Stetson Kennedy of Jacksonville and Robert Harrison Cook. Representatives of the Federal Writers’ Project, Kennedy and Cook had honeycombed the hinterland and …
The 1944 Florida Democratic Senate Primary, James C. Clark
The 1944 Florida Democratic Senate Primary, James C. Clark
Florida Historical Quarterly
Senator Claude Pepper’s defeat in the 1950 Democratic primary by Representative George Smathers has become one of the most controversial elections in Florida politics. The race between Pepper, a New Deal liberal, and Smathers, a traditional southern conservative, attracted national attention. But Pepper’s popularity actually began to decline in 1944, when he narrowly avoided a runoff election against a field of little-known candidates. The 1944 election indicated some of Pepper’s political weaknesses that Smathers would exploit six years later. Claude Pepper followed an unusual route to the United States Senate. He was born in Alabama in 1900, was graduated from …

Nobility, Family, And Service: Menéndez And His Men, John Frederick Schwaller
Nobility, Family, And Service: Menéndez And His Men, John Frederick Schwaller
Florida Historical Quarterly
The conquest of Florida by the Spanish has been described by Eugene Lyon and other important scholars. Nevertheless, it is sometimes forgotten that Florida was only a small and relatively unimportant part of Spain’s vast American empire. Yet those conquistadors and their followers who came to Florida are an interesting lot. This is particularly true of these men who served with Menéndez in Florida, a group of whom ended their lives and careers in Mexico. An examination of their activities reveals the ties of family, the status of nobility, and the importance of royal service.

Ordeal By Siege: James Bruce In Pensacola, 1780-1781, Robin F. A. Fabel
Ordeal By Siege: James Bruce In Pensacola, 1780-1781, Robin F. A. Fabel
Florida Historical Quarterly
Of the aspects of British West Florida attracting the attention of historians none surpasses the siege of Pensacola in 1781. All accounts rely on the reports of combatant participants, but no historian of West Florida has evidently used or perhaps been aware of the observations of one of the many civilian observers trapped by war in Pensacola. He was James Bruce, collector of customs at Pensacola. While enduring with his countrymen the final desperate days of British rule in the province, he wrote six letters to mercantile friends in London. They provide, apart from illuminating details of economic conditions during …
William J. Howey And His Florida Dreams, Melvin Edward Hughes, Jr.
William J. Howey And His Florida Dreams, Melvin Edward Hughes, Jr.
Florida Historical Quarterly
William John Howey was a land speculator who came to Florida in 1908 and devised a unique land sales and development program on nearly 60,000 acres of land in Lake County. Howey’s plan, based on the sale of undeveloped citrus land, led to the creation of Howey-in-the-Hills, a town he envisioned as the “City Inevitable.“ In addition to this visionary enterprise Howey ran as the Republican candidate for governor of Florida in 1928, and again in 1932.
Vegetable Hair: The Spanish Moss Industry In Florida, Anne Gometz Foshee
Vegetable Hair: The Spanish Moss Industry In Florida, Anne Gometz Foshee
Florida Historical Quarterly
Some people do not care for Spanish moss. According to an anonymous writer in the American Cyclopedia in 1881 “its effect, on account of its sombre color, is not altogether pleasing.“ However, the moss, eyecatching feature of the southern landscape that it is, has usually been regarded as an aesthetic asset, appealing to tourists and to the romantically-minded. Many people today have forgotten, if they ever knew, that it was once a more direct economic asset, serving a number of utilitarian purposes. Along with its value as a cattle feed and as a cheap packing material for crates of fruits …
