An Analysis Of The Experiences Of Mid-Range Black Soul And R&B Musicians During The 1960s, Hope R. Mcalee
An Analysis Of The Experiences Of Mid-Range Black Soul And R&B Musicians During The 1960s, Hope R. Mcalee
Student Theses and Dissertations
Little scholarly historical information is available about the experiences of Black musicians in the Soul and R&B genres aside from information pertaining to a few specific musicians who are most popularly discussed. This thesis investigated the experiences of mid-range Black, Soul, and R&B musicians from the Delta who were successful in the 1960s but are currently less popularly discussed through a qualitative content analysis of print media articles. Given that there appears to be a gap in literature, this thesis sought to discover the experiences of these musicians to give a more holistic view of the musicians behind genres that …

The Increasing Latino Vote In Massachusetts: Results From The 2020 Presidential Election, Phillip Granberry, Luis F. Jiménez
The Increasing Latino Vote In Massachusetts: Results From The 2020 Presidential Election, Phillip Granberry, Luis F. Jiménez
Gastón Institute Publications
During the early 21st century, Latinos have grown as a part of the Massachusetts population. To a considerable extent, this growth is reflected in Latinos’ political participation, as shown by voting statistics. For example, the number of Latinos voting in presidential elections rose from 51,000 in 2000 to 227,000 in 2020, a remarkable increase of 345%. Similarly, the percentage of votes for president that were cast by Latinos rose from 1.8% in 2000 to 7.0% in 2020. However, Latino voting is still not fully proportionate to Latinos’ share of the statewide population. Both of these phenomena – the growth of …

Within And Beyond Stereotypes Of Arab Women: A Corpus-Based Approach To Jordanian Women’S Portrayal In English Digital News, Duaa Tabaza, Zahara Mustafa-Awad
Journal of International Women's Studies
This study is part of a project on the representations of Jordanian women in Arabic and English digital news, and how these relate to their perceived status in their society and to Arab women’s general image in Western media. We focus on their depictions in related news stories appearing in English during the period 2014-2016 and how they compare to the overall representations of Arab women in news discourse. To this end, we combine discourse analysis approaches and corpus linguistic techniques to analyse a corpus composed of 616 articles (445,904 words) published in English mainly by 10 news websites based …

Differences In Research On Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: How Trauma-Type And Sex Contribute To The Published Research, Jessica Anzalone, Sharon Ramos-Goyette, Marissa Morganelli, Merideth Krevosky
Journal of International Women's Studies
There is a pervasive and comprehensive history of sexism in the pursuit of scientific truth, extending back beyond the days of “hysteria” and continuing still. Herein, we discuss a disparity in scientific research on a disorder thought to affect less than 8% of the adult population in the USA with the number of women diagnosed with the disorder estimated to be two to three times higher than that of men. While post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is more likely to be experienced by women, we find that the overwhelming majority of published scientific literature on PTSD involves male combat veterans. For …

The Effects Of Psychodrama Intervention On Intimate Partner Violence And Quality Of Life: Trial Of Syrian Refugee Abused Women, Jalal Kayed Damra
Journal of International Women's Studies
This randomized controlled study assessed the efficacy of group psychodrama intervention in reducing Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) and enhancing Quality of Life (QoL) for Syrian Refugee Abused Women (RAW) who were living in the Al- Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan. Forty IPV refugee Syrian women were randomly assigned to either the psychodrama group (n=20) or the control/comparison group (n=20). The DVQ and WHOQOL-100 were used to assess the IPV and QoL, respectively. The psychodrama group attended 12 psychodrama sessions (one session per week). The results indicated that the psychodrama group participants demonstrated a statistically significant decrease in IPV severity and …

Political Communication Strategies To Increase The Opportunity Of Women's Political Representation In Indonesian Parliament, Zaenal Mukarom
Journal of International Women's Studies
Empirically, women's involvement in Indonesian politics still indicates a low participation level. This study aims to determine the political communication strategies undertaken by women and political parties which are considered to have a direct interest in women's representation in the legislature. The methodology employed included in-depth interviews, focus group discussion, and participant observation. The study was conducted in the West Java Parliament representing the dynamics of national politics. The study found that the current political communication strategies undertaken by women politicians involved alternative strategies such as mainstreaming gender, encouraging affirmative action to have at least 30% women's representation, and offering …

Negotiating Sexual Harassment: Experiences Of Women Academic Leaders In Pakistan, Aisha Bhatti, Rabia Ali
Journal of International Women's Studies
This paper endeavors to explore sexual harassment encountered by women leaders in Pakistani academia. An in-depth interview method was used to gain insight from women academic administrators working in coeducational universities in two cities of Pakistan. The interviews were analyzed using Foucauldian discourse analysis. The findings highlight that women leaders were sexually harassed by men at positions of power as well as co-workers and subordinates. The acts of harassment were expressed mostly through the use of inappropriate language such as jokes, demeaning comments and sexual remarks, undue offers of promotion for exchange of favors, and use of traditional words instead …

Analysis Of Black Female Belizean Stereotypes In Visual Media: Jezebel, Mammy, Sapphire, And Their Contributions To Violence Against Women, Kiesha Warren-Gordon, Deborah Mencias Mcmillan
Journal of International Women's Studies
Around the world, the representation of Black women in media is often flawed, as ideologies shaped by racism and white supremacy dominate the social construction of the representation of Black women in print media. This paper examines the use of “click speech” responses to a Facebook post where we condemn the use of what we perceive to be negative images of Black women used to market rum. Specifically, we ask the question: How do Belizeans respond to our request and our framing of the marketing campaign as being racist and sexist? Using a Belizean feminist lens, we analyze click speech …

Feminism And Intersectionality: Black Feminist Studies And The Perspectives Of Jennifer C. Nash, Goutam Karmakar
Journal of International Women's Studies
This in-depth conversation with Jennifer Christine Nash, the Jean Fox O’Barr Professor of Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies at Duke University, USA, aims to illuminate the complexities of intersectionality in feminist discourse. This interview focuses on Nash’s work and perspectives on intersectionality in relation to gender, class, race, sexuality, and hierarchies of power and privilege. This interview discusses precarity, vulnerability, and intersectionality in black feminist discourse, as well as the marginalisation of black women’s heterogeneity, the politics of reading associated with intersectionality, and the relationship between temporality and intersectionality. Additionally, this conversation discusses Nash’s monograph, Black Feminism Reimagined (2019), post-intersectionality …
Incestuous: A Childhood Memoir In Verse, Sleiman El Hajj
Incestuous: A Childhood Memoir In Verse, Sleiman El Hajj
Journal of International Women's Studies
Childhood sexual abuse, including incest, is underreported and often unreported in the staunchly patriarchal Lebanese setting. The revolutionary spirit that accompanied the country’s October 2019 uprising instigated hope that Lebanese patriarchy, and its concomitant juggernaut of warlords and/or formidable father figures—social, political, cultural, religious, and familial—were not immune to opprobrium in public and private spheres alike. It is within this context that this poem’s protagonist, a friend and fellow demonstrator, managed to share her memories of traumas lived in 1980s Beirut. Written not only with the permission but also at the request of the subject in the story, this childhood …
Academic (Abbreviated) Review And My Thoughts On “Birth-Time…The Documentary, Gloria Bobbie
Academic (Abbreviated) Review And My Thoughts On “Birth-Time…The Documentary, Gloria Bobbie
Journal of International Women's Studies
Anthropologists and other social scientists as well as many in the field of healthcare have for decades published articles on the detrimental effects of the medicalization of pregnancy and birth. There is no dearth of information in the academic databases, yet little progress has been made in stopping the harm being done by unnecessary medical procedures such as Caesarian sections (World Health Organization, 2021). Since Smokey the Bear was introduced, the concept of humanizing topics by putting faces and voices on social issues is recognized as psychologically effective (Herbert, W. 2013), and that is what the documentary “Birth-Time” does. It …
Crafted For The Male Gaze: Gender Discrimination In The K-Pop Industry, Liz Jonas
Crafted For The Male Gaze: Gender Discrimination In The K-Pop Industry, Liz Jonas
Journal of International Women's Studies
This paper explores the ways in which the Korean popular music industry has maintained and promoted pre-existing cultural patriarchy. The discussion highlights how seeming opportunity for women to enter the industry has resulted in increased objectification and legitimacy of the domination of the “male gaze.” The paper provides an evaluation of the career, marginalization, and precarity of female music artists (“idols”) both with respect to the issues they face and in comparison, with their male counterparts. The paper addresses how ageism and sexualization in the music industry has influenced and reinforced social norms. The discussion concludes by noting a cultural …

Female Undergraduates Playing It ‘Safe’ To Stay ‘Safe’: Further Understanding Sexual Violence Against Women, Helen Bovill, Kieran Mccartan, Richard Waller
Journal of International Women's Studies
Women’s safety from sexual violence whilst at university is a global issue and the UK is no exception. Whilst the authors of this paper acknowledge that sexual violence can occur across the gender spectrum, most sexual violence ‘victims’ are women and girls, and this study explores sexual violence experienced by female undergraduates. This paper explored sexual violence and university students with fifteen undergraduate participants who took part in a total of three qualitative focus groups at one post-92 UK University. Whilst the study focussed on the experiences of female students, we sought the perspectives of female and male students to …

He Said, She Said: A Critical Content Analysis Of Sexist Language Used In Disney’S The Little Mermaid (1989) And Mulan (1998), Shakira Begum
Journal of International Women's Studies
This study looks at how Disney princess films perpetuate sexist tropes through language. By focusing on both feminism and linguistics, it uses an interdisciplinary approach underpinned by data analysis and media criticism. This paper uses a content analysis study of The Little Mermaid (1989) and Mulan (1998) to look at Disney’s role in shaping representations of women, and how this representation has shifted within the decade of the release of these two films. This paper answers the question: in what ways does language in media perpetuate sexist tropes; more specifically, how has the language of male characters in media perpetuated …
Women’S Political Capabilities As Mediators Of Leadership And People Satisfaction, Nicos Antoniades, Iris Mohr, Anna Koukkides-Procopiou
Women’S Political Capabilities As Mediators Of Leadership And People Satisfaction, Nicos Antoniades, Iris Mohr, Anna Koukkides-Procopiou
Journal of International Women's Studies
Despite a much lower proportion than men, in both business and politics, a 2018 Pew Research Center survey shows that majorities in the U.S.A. say women leaders in comparison to men are more compassionate and empathetic in working out compromises and in standing up for their beliefs. Via the resource-based view tool, the researchers examine these specific capabilities (i.e., political proposals that benefit society, humanitarian causes, and political ideas) of U.S. women politicians and men politicians, while separately attempting to validate public perceptions of leadership. Using correlation analysis, the study tests the effect of each capability on leadership and people …

“Why Don’T You Hear Us?”: Interview Narratives Of Disabled Working Women In Private Small Business Firms In India, Deepanjana Varshney
Journal of International Women's Studies
This research explores the perception of disabled working women in small organizations in India's private sector. A meticulous study of past research revealed a paucity of research for working women with disabilities (WWD), especially in small enterprises in the Indian context. There are misconceptions and barriers associated with women with disabilities across the world. Past research demonstrates negative attitudes and related stereotyping notions regarding disabled working women. In sum, they are considered weak, incapable, and dependent on others. There has been insufficient research on employee disability, but there is limited research on the feelings and experiences of disabled working women, …

Scarred For Life: Thoughts On Legal Perspectives Of Acid Attacks In Selected Countries With A Focus On India, Shaheema Hameed, Bhupal Bhattacharya
Journal of International Women's Studies
This article discusses acid attack victims in India—who are primarily women—while examining the related laws dealing with such issues. While these attacks can be associated with societal and other factors that relegate women to an inferior position in a society of male-dominated patriarchal culture, cases of acid assaults are on the rise in India. This research examines the related laws that deal with such issues in India and recommends suggestions for future scope for its remedies. Acid attack victims and survivors are at the receiving end of social stigmas that prevent them from achieving fulfilling lives. They are ostracized and …
Personal Narrative As Shaping The Activist Identity Of Religious Women In Israel, Ayelet Makaros, Edith Blit-Cohen
Personal Narrative As Shaping The Activist Identity Of Religious Women In Israel, Ayelet Makaros, Edith Blit-Cohen
Journal of International Women's Studies
This article is based on the life stories of 14 religious activist women in Israel. It aims to understand the extent to which these women’s stories and their childhood and maturation experiences shaped their activist identity. In this qualitative, critical-feminist study, the women activists’ life stories were examined using semi-structured interviews. The findings indicate that personal or social events perceived as significant in the women’s lives as children and adolescents acted as catalysts for activism. These events were central to their personal narratives and became embedded in the women’s activist identity, as they came to perceive activism as the most …

Political Empowerment Of Women And The Mediating Role Of Political Awareness:The Case Of Oman, Victoria Dauletova, Houchang Hassan, Yari Zainab Hussain
Journal of International Women's Studies
Despite commitments by the Arabian Gulf countries to promote gender equality and policies of nondiscrimination against women, the underrepresentation of women in the political sphere remains unchanged. Using the case of the Sultanate of Oman, this paper endeavors to analyze the reasons behind the persistent political disempowerment of women in the Middle East and North African region through the lens of public opinion. The findings are based on 288 surveys conducted with two groups of participants – a group of undergraduate and postgraduate students majoring in political science, and a group of Omani citizens with no political education. These findings …
