From Can't To Can't: The North Florida Turpentine Camp, 1900-1950, Robert N. Lauriault
Florida Historical Quarterly
The dark slides like a tight glove over the solitary woods camp, and no man’s light affronts the majesty of the night sky. An insipid stirring of the warm evening air sets a single pine bough to swaying. Overall, stillness reigns— silence but for the monotony of a distant chuck-wills-widow and the earnest chant of frogs from some distant bog beyond the gloomy line of slash pines— the trees that make of the camp an island in a shadowy, evergreen sea.

"Give Us Twenty-Five Years": Florida Seminoles From Near Termination, Harry A. Kersey, Jr.
Florida Historical Quarterly
In the years immediately following World War II, the nation experienced an ultra-conservative reaction to the social and economic policies fostered during Franklin D. Roosevelt’s unprecedented four-term presidency. Beginning in the late 1930s a coalition of conservative Republicans and southern Democrats set out to scuttle those aspects of the New Deal which they found most inimical to their ideology. When the Republicans regained control of the Congress in 1946, it signaled the beginning of a concerted effort to dismantle all but the most essential governmental spending programs. One of the federal bureaucracies singled out for annihilation— it did not enjoy …
Sibling Stewards Of A Commercial Empire: The Innerarity Brothers In The Floridas, Thomas C. Kennedy
Sibling Stewards Of A Commercial Empire: The Innerarity Brothers In The Floridas, Thomas C. Kennedy
Florida Historical Quarterly
Marquis James, in his biography of Andrew Jackson, alluded to John Forbes and Company, a firm which had succeeded Panton, Leslie and Company in 1804, and asserted that members of the Forbes enterprise “remained the actual rulers of Florida.” Among its members in 1804 were James Innerarity and his brother John. Of the latter, Marquis wrote: “Like a white shadow, John Innerarity glided through the weaving labyrinth, never on the losing side.“ Another scholar contended that individuals connected with both companies “were influential with the governments under which they lived, and exercised unmeasured control over the Indian tribes with which …

"Everybody Votes For Gilchrist": The Florida Gubernatorial Campaign Of 1908, Ric A. Kabat
"Everybody Votes For Gilchrist": The Florida Gubernatorial Campaign Of 1908, Ric A. Kabat
Florida Historical Quarterly
The sun was breaking through in Tallahassee on January 5, 1909, as groups of people filled the streets excitedly awaiting the inauguration of Florida’s new governor. The capitol was adorned with red, white, and blue bunting, and crowds had gathered on the grounds to watch the ceremonial festivities. At 12:00 P.M., Albert W. Gilchrist recited the oath officially accepting the office that he had sought so long and hard. Stepping to the podium, he could see hundreds of people waiting to hear his inaugural address. Many wondered: will Gilchrist be progressive? Will he pursue liberal policies or will his administration …
"State Of Emergency": Key West In The Great Depression, Garry Boulard
"State Of Emergency": Key West In The Great Depression, Garry Boulard
Florida Historical Quarterly
On July 1, 1934, elected representatives of the Key West City Council and the Monroe County Board of Commissioners drew up two separate resolutions that said the same thing. The island city, the ordinances declared, was more than $5,000,000 in bonded debt, with at least eighty percent of its inhabitants on the welfare rolls. City services were reduced to almost a non-existent level as employees went without pay for weeks at a time. Furthermore, the lack of a viable industry to employ local residents, coupled with a greatly decreased island tax base, foretold a dire economic future for the city.
Arcadia And Bagdad: Industrial Parks Of Antebellum Florida, Brian Rucker
Arcadia And Bagdad: Industrial Parks Of Antebellum Florida, Brian Rucker
Florida Historical Quarterly
Industrial development in antebellum Florida was rare; the new state’s economy was based primarily on agriculture, as were the other southern states. Two exceptions, however, are the interconnected industrial complexes of Arcadia and Bagdad, located in northwest Florida approximately twenty-five miles from Pensacola. Arcadia had its origins in 1817 and operated as an industrial site until 1855. Bagdad began in 1840 and became one of the world’s largest producers and exporters of yellow pine lumber until its lumber mill closed in 1939.
Florida Preachers And The Election Of 1928, M. Edward Highes
Florida Preachers And The Election Of 1928, M. Edward Highes
Florida Historical Quarterly
In the presidential election of 1928, a Roman Catholic, Governor Alfred E. Smith of New York, was the first of his religion to represent a major political party as its candidate for president. When Smith, the Democratic nominee, was defeated in this election, the importance of religion to his defeat frequently obscured the other issue which also created widespread opposition to his presidential aspirations. This issue, which many of the opponents of Smith cited as central to their opposition, was prohibition. Governor Smith proposed modifying existing prohibition laws to allow the sale of beer and wine. It was this position, …

Apalachee Counterfeiters In St. Augustine, John H. Hann
Apalachee Counterfeiters In St. Augustine, John H. Hann
Florida Historical Quarterly
The record of the criminal investigation into the counterfeiting activity of two young Apalachee visitors to St. Augustine is of significance for the light it casts on the acculturation of the Indians, Spanish labor recruitment practices late in the mission period, and the missions’ influence. It provides interesting vignettes as well of retail commercial life in St. Augustine and of the role played by free blacks in that commercial life and of the access of blacks to the governor.

Vigilante Justice And National Reaction: The 1937 Tallahassee Double Lynching, Walter T. Howard
Vigilante Justice And National Reaction: The 1937 Tallahassee Double Lynching, Walter T. Howard
Florida Historical Quarterly
The gruesome southern custom of lynching blacks no longer plagues the state of Florida. Yet, between 1882 and 1945, this species of vigilantism was a persistent problem. In the period 1889 to 1918, peak lynching years in the United States, nearly 200 blacks were executed in Florida. During the decade 1890-1900, seventy-four blacks were victims to lynch-law in Florida, and in the first ten years of the twentieth century, fifty-one met death in the same fashion. Forty-nine blacks were lynched between 1910 and 1917, and thirty-four between 1922 and 1929. Twelve blacks were executed during the decade of the 1930s, …
Rebel Beef: Florida Cattle And The Confederate Army, 1862-1864, Robert A. Taylor
Rebel Beef: Florida Cattle And The Confederate Army, 1862-1864, Robert A. Taylor
Florida Historical Quarterly
Florida supplied the Confederacy with thousands of head of cattle during the Civil War. Beef provided an important food source for soldiers in the lower South. Beef kept the Army of Tennessee from starving during the winters of 1863 and 1864, and meat sustained the defenders of Charleston while under Union seige. The Confederate Commissary Bureau had little difficulty supplying their armies with beef during the first year of the war, but by the beginning of 1862, it became increasingly hard to procure. To increase the number of available cattle, the Bureau awarded contracts to civilian agents to locate and …
Pedro Menéndez's Strategic Plan For The Florida Peninsula, Eugene Lyon
Pedro Menéndez's Strategic Plan For The Florida Peninsula, Eugene Lyon
Florida Historical Quarterly
It is evident that perceptible interconnections linked the efforts of the several sixteenth-century explorers of North America. Professor Paul Hoffman has pointed out how legend and geographic surmise drew Europeans to the continent from the time of John and Sebastian Cabot and Juan Ponce de Leon to that of Walter Raleigh. The later adventurers were heritors of the wisdom of folly of their predecessors, from whatever nation or kingdom they might have come.

Lee Isaac Chung, Minari (2020): Having An Amerikorean Life, Nagehan Uzuner
Lee Isaac Chung, Minari (2020): Having An Amerikorean Life, Nagehan Uzuner
Markets, Globalization & Development Review
Minari by Lee Isaac Chung is a drama which chronicles the life of a Korean family who moves to the USA during 1980s in pursuit for a better life. The acculturation process is experienced differently by family members. Children are mostly bored with their new life in the rural area of Arkansas while their mother, Monica, is terrified of living in a mobile home which is made of a truck trailer in the middle of nowhere. Meanwhile, the grandmother joins the family from Korea to take care of the kids with a more positive approach dealing with their struggles. The …

Minari: The Concealed Asian Aspiration Wrapped In The American Dream, Anh Luan Tran-Nguyen, Arthur Nguyen
Markets, Globalization & Development Review
After the success of the Korean film Parasite, Minari – a quasi-autobiographical drama of the Korean-American film director Lee Isaac Chung – has again turned the global public’s attention to Korean culture at large. In this review, we shed light on two themes that we capture from the movie: tensions and compromises in chasing the American dream of immigrants. Although stories about pursuing the American dream are abundant, we know less about how that dream causes tensions at the individual and family levels and how the tensions are resolved. Minari is an excellent example to probe the unfolding issues relating …

With All Your Heart: An Ignatian Retreat In Lent, Office Of Mission
Office of Mission Publications
This booklet is designed as a resource for a 4-week spiritual retreat during Lent. It proposes scriptural suggestions for most days of the week, and includes a weekly review (or Examen) each Saturday. It is also designed to serve as a place where you can note things that emerge in prayer on a particular day, so that you can bring them into conversation with a retreat guide or spiritual director.
This year’s retreat takes place during the “Ignatian Year.” This celebration commemorates the 500th anniversary of the conversion of Saint Ignatius Loyola and the 400th anniversary of his canonization on …
Buddhist Modernism In The Philippines: Emerging Localization Of Humanistic Buddhism, Aristotle C. Dy
Buddhist Modernism In The Philippines: Emerging Localization Of Humanistic Buddhism, Aristotle C. Dy
Chinese Studies Department Faculty Publications
Mahayana Buddhism is well known for being successfully implanted in various cultures. Chinese Buddhism, considered one of the three great religions of China along with Confucianism and Taoism, is a classic example. From China, Buddhism traveled further and, in the twentieth century, developed a particular way of engaging the world. Humanistic Buddhism, a particular form of engaged Buddhism that grew out of twentieth-century Chinese Buddhism, has been present in the Philippines since the 1990s and signaled a new phase in the growth of Buddhism in the country. In particular, the Philippine initiators of Foguangshan and Ciji did not limit themselves …
