Research in progress for HUMA 1301: Introduction to Humanities I
Faculty Mentors: Carolyn Perry, Ph.D. and Rich DeRouen
The following essay by Austin Tate began in response to an assignment in the Introduction to Humanities course taught by Prof. DeRouen. The assignment asked students to analyze the influence of contending value systems—those of the oikos and those of the polis—as they reveal themselves in selected scenes from the Sophoclean play Antigone. A secondary objective of the task was to interrogate the attempts of Antigone and Creon—the central characters of the play—to navigate the mix of personal …

There’S No Crying In Baseball (Until Coronavirus Comes Around), Jessica Payne
Master's Theses
This study sought to investigate fan reactions to the NCAA communication around the elimination of NC State from the 2021 Baseball College World Series. NC State was eliminated due to Covid-19 protocols. A content analysis was conducted by looking at posts from various NCAA related accounts on Instagram and Twitter: @ncaabaseball, @ncaa, @ncstatebaseball, @vandyboys, @hailstatebb, and @texasbaseball. Content was analyzed using frames such as Health/Covid-19, Fans, Team Spotlight, Game Update, Elimination, Hype, Merch, and Sympathy. The study concluded that the while NCAA accounts ignored the incident and Health/Covid-19 frames altogether, the posts about Health/Covid-19 from team accounts actually gained a …

Proceedings: 2022 Global Voices on the University of Dayton Campus
In 2000, South Africa’s president Thabo Mbeki stated that the twenty-first century would be the “Century of Africa.” Indeed I, like many, believe that Africa is a continent full of promise, rich cultural heritage, blessed with a wealth of natural resources, and poised to become a hub of innovation and progress. Recently, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken remarked that Africa is headed toward becoming one of the world’s most important economic regions, and that it will have a hand in shaping in the future of the world. Recent advances have been made in solar power, the “green tech” industry working …

Anti-Urbanism In Culture And In The Adventist Church: Advocacy And Action For Urban Ministry In The Twentieth Century—Part 2, Jerry R. Chase
Journal of Adventist Mission Studies
This article explores the response within the Seventh-day Adventist Church after Ellen G. White’s death to the dual emphases in her writings on the city and rural living. On one hand she strongly encouraged large Adventist institutions and families raising children to locate out of the cities. This was because of the advantages natural surroundings have on physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing, and to shield children and young adults from the evils and temptations of the city. While she recognized the evils in the city and God’s impending judgments, she aggressively pushed church leaders to take a more active role …
The Shirt Of Nessus: International Debt As A Tool Of Hegemonic Control, Omar Hamed Ghannam
The Shirt Of Nessus: International Debt As A Tool Of Hegemonic Control, Omar Hamed Ghannam
Theses and Dissertations
International debt has been a fixture of the global economy and state financing for centuries. The economic logic of accruing international debt and its management is rarely questioned in the literature, even as sovereign debt crises abound. These crises offer a point of examination, re-assessment, and negotiations concerning allocating the burdens. This paper aims to study these debt crises to interrogate the issue of international debt, the depoliticized economic mantras that govern it, their validity, sincerity, and the political and social implications on the indebted polity. This is done by looking at the origins of debt crises, and examining how …
