Land use modelling is increasingly used by archaeologists and palaeoecologists seeking to quantify and compare the changing influence of humans on the environment. In Southeast Asia, the intensification of rice agriculture and the arrival of European colonizers have both been seen as major catalysts for deforestation, soil erosion, and biodiversity change. Here we consider the Tuwali-Ifugao people of the Cordillera Central (Luzon, Philippines), who resisted Spanish colonial subjugation from the 16th to the mid-nineteenth century, in part through the development of a world-renowned system of intensive wet-rice terrace agriculture. To quantify changes in how the Tuwali-Ifugao used their environment, we …

Farewell To The Chief: The American Presidential Funeral, Aaron Lee Shuman Mar 2022

Farewell To The Chief: The American Presidential Funeral, Aaron Lee Shuman

Theses and Dissertations

In this work, the author argues that the funeral of an American President constitutes a final venue from which the president can communicate with the American public. In this “speech” the president can make subtle statements about which parts of their lives they want to be remembered for. The work’s argument is illustrated through a case study analyzing the 2018 funeral of President George H.W. Bush, backed by oral history interviews with individuals who had attended the funeral in an official capacity. The author closes the work by insisting that the presidential funeral offers a window into the mind of …

The Aesthetic Impact Of The Garden Of Eden, David Fenner Mar 2022

The Aesthetic Impact Of The Garden Of Eden, David Fenner

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

No garden in the history of the world has had a greater impact on gardens and gardening than the Garden of Eden, as expressed in the Jewish, Christian, and Islamic religions, regardless of whether the Garden of Eden ever existed. Yet, given evidence in the texts of the stories of Eden of its unchanging nature, and given that all gardens are naturally dynamic, Eden does not qualify to be a true garden. In addition to the story’s impact on gardens and gardening, Eden is aesthetically impactful because it is from appreciation of the story as a morality tale that we …

A Study Of Little John And The Making Of Quasi-Middle Lu Xun, Chongke Zhu, Liping Liang Mar 2022

A Study Of Little John And The Making Of Quasi-Middle Lu Xun, Chongke Zhu, Liping Liang

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

The Chinese version of Frederik van Eeden's Little John translated by Lu Xun was published in 1928, twenty-two years after Luxun embarked on his literary life, and the influence of this work on Luxun went much far more than a pure translation job. The works in Wild Grass, Dawn Blossoms Plucked at Dusk, and Old Tales Retold by quasi-middle Luxun are directly related with Little John in terms of style, thematic concerns, representations of scene, and fields of imagination. However, despite the influences, Luxun's works had developed their own characteristics and demonstrated the intellectual depth and poetic charm of the …

A Study Of Heidegger's "Interpretation For Van Gogh" From The Perspective Of "Becoming And Manifestation" In The Sensory Structure Of Artistic Works, Yunpeng Zhang Mar 2022

A Study Of Heidegger's "Interpretation For Van Gogh" From The Perspective Of "Becoming And Manifestation" In The Sensory Structure Of Artistic Works, Yunpeng Zhang

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

While Heidegger's "Interpretation for Van Gogh" is influential in academic circles, there are also some challenges, criticism and arguments. In order to deepen the understanding of Heidegger's interpretation, we need to contextualize it in the theory after the turn of his thought. To determine whether the explanation is reasonable and appropriate, we need to verify it by returning to the phenomenon of "becoming and manifestation" within the sensory structure in aesthetic experience of artistic works. If the sensory manifestation of artistic works is poetry, then the aesthetic interpretation is thought. Whether poetry and thought are identical or not should be …

A Study Of Franco Moretti's "Materialism Of Form", Chunrong Qian Mar 2022

A Study Of Franco Moretti's "Materialism Of Form", Chunrong Qian

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Directly influenced by Galvano Della Volpe's Positivist Marxism, Franco Moretti pursues objective and scientific literary research. The most concrete manifestation is his use of metering method. Of course, Althusser's Structuralist Marxism is the main context for Moretti's entire thought. Though he accepts Lukacs' s proposition that "forms are the true social factor in literature", there are three unique features in his thinking about the proposition compared with other Marxists. Firstly, forms are not conceptual or abstract, nor do they exist for the need of theories. Rather, forms are a part of stylistic theories, stylistic practices and styles. Secondly, forms are …

Accountability As A Key Virtue In Mental Health And Human Flourishing, John R. Peteet, Charlotte Vanoyen-Witvliet, C. Stephen Evans Mar 2022

Accountability As A Key Virtue In Mental Health And Human Flourishing, John R. Peteet, Charlotte Vanoyen-Witvliet, C. Stephen Evans

Faculty Publications

We propose that accountability plays an implicit, important, and relatively unexamined role in psychiatry. People generally think of accountability as a relation in which one party is held accountable by another. In this paper, we examine accountability as a virtue, drawing on philosophy, psychiatry, and psychology to examine what it means to welcome being accountable in an excellent way that promotes flourishing. When people manifest accountability as a virtue, they are both responsive to others they owe a response, and they are responsible for their attitudes and actions in light of these relationships. Psychiatric treatment often aims to correct disordered …

Story And Play: Applying Narrative Game Scholarship To Game Design, Rodale Wenger Mar 2022

Story And Play: Applying Narrative Game Scholarship To Game Design, Rodale Wenger

University Honors Theses

This paper examines the relationship of narrative to computer games from a design perspective. Over the past three decades, the academic discourse on narratives games has evolved considerably while producing a wealth of serious scholarship. However, the process of narrative game design continues to be an underdeveloped area of study. In this thesis, I review influential scholarship on narrative games and the broader topic of interactive digital narrative (IDN) and attempt to analyze its potential application to the process of design. I examine some of the major works on IDN, explore historical and ongoing debates related to narrativity within games, …

Grey’S Anatomy And End Of Life Ethics, Sean Micheal Swenson Mar 2022

Grey’S Anatomy And End Of Life Ethics, Sean Micheal Swenson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this qualitative study, I analyze three episodes of the prime-time television medical drama Grey’s Anatomy to explore how the show stages conversations of end of life. I extend the work of end of life ethicists with attention to the ways that media may/should/could be used to teach and reflect issues of dying in America. Performing a close textual analysis, I identified two modes of storytelling within the structure of these episodes: Documentary Realism and Melodrama. I argue that if we are to understand medical dramas as a tool for the dissemination of information about end of life ethics, we …

Vedantic Basis And Praxis Of The Integral Advaita Of Sri Aurobindo, Debashish Banerji Mar 2022

Vedantic Basis And Praxis Of The Integral Advaita Of Sri Aurobindo, Debashish Banerji

Monsoon: South Asian Studies Association Journal

The integral nondualism of Sri Aurobindo can be traced to the great pronouncements (mahāvākya) of the Upanishads and later commentaries. This study examines teachings on the Supermind (vijñāna) and the other four kinds of consciousness that define human reality: Matter (annaṃ), Life (prāṇaḥ), Mind (manaḥ), and Bliss (ānanda). Through Yoga and Tantra, one learns and embodies the pathway to the divine.

Digital And Spatial Humanities Mapping: Eurasia-Pacific Early Trade And Belief Linkages, Igor Sitnikov, David Blundell

Monsoon: South Asian Studies Association Journal

The Eurasia-Pacific is a dynamic region of rapid economic growth, cultural awareness, natural resource exploration, and military buildup. The concept of the region is relatively new, featuring contested vast areas of geo-resource space of numerous cultures and languages. The current findings in anthropology and archaeology and even its more specific subfields such as folklore are important contribution to the understanding of periodic environmental changes and technical innovations were the main forces of transformations in social structures that have determined the mechanisms and levels of cross-cultural trade activity across the region. We have traced early trade and belief linkages across Eurasia-Pacific …

In this article, the author examines the royal bath called Tushā Hiti located in Sūndari Chowk (Beautiful Courtyard) of Pātan Durbar Square, using six different methods of investigation. The question: What is in a name? started the ball of investigation rolling and along the way were added more supporting blocks such as history, iconography, function and purpose, notion of purity and impurity, and finally the hiti in popular culture to get a complete picture of the subject in question.

The Edge Of Christendom On The Early Modern Stage, Lisa Hopkins Mar 2022

The Edge Of Christendom On The Early Modern Stage, Lisa Hopkins

Late Tudor and Stuart Drama

Throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the edges of Europe were under pressure from the Ottoman Turks. This book explores how Shakespeare and his contemporaries represented places where Christians came up against Turks, including Malta, Tunis, Hungary, and Armenia. Some forms of Christianity itself might seem alien, so the book also considers the interface between traditional Catholicism, new forms of Protestantism, and Greek and Russian orthodoxy. But it also finds that the concept of Christendom was under threat in other places, some much nearer to home. Edges of Christendom could be found in areas that were or had been pagan, …

Negotiating Boundaries In Medieval Literature And Culture: Essays On Marginality, Difference, And Reading Practices In Honor Of Thomas Hahn, Valerie B. Johnson, Kara L. Mcshane Mar 2022

Negotiating Boundaries In Medieval Literature And Culture: Essays On Marginality, Difference, And Reading Practices In Honor Of Thomas Hahn, Valerie B. Johnson, Kara L. Mcshane

Festschriften, Occasional Papers, and Lectures

Thomas Hahn’s work laid the foundations for medieval romance studies to embrace the study of alterity and hybridity within Middle English literature. His contributions to scholarship brought Robin Hood studies into the critical mainstream, normalized the study of historically marginalized literature and peoples, and encouraged scholars to view medieval readers as actively encountering others and exploring themselves. This volume employs his methodologies – careful attention to texts and their contexts, cross-cultural readings, and theoretically-informed analysis – to highlight the literary culture of late medieval England afresh. Addressing long-established canonical works such as Chaucer, Christine de Pizan, and Malory alongside understudied …

A Festival Of Form: Score, Anthony Elia Mar 2022

A Festival Of Form: Score, Anthony Elia

Bridwell Library Research

"A Festival of Form" was both an event at Bridwell and Perkins School of Theology and a conceptual piece of music that lasted several days. In this rendering, the "piece of music" was articulated in a fluid combination of activities that included works by other composers, including John Cage. The activities involved--from lectures, conversations, and meals to actual performances of both short works and especially the world-record breaking rendition of "Organ2/ASLSP" played by Christopher Anderson--comprise the entirety of "A Festival of Form" as performance piece. The challenge of this work is that unlike nearly any other music, it is purposely …
