Measuring The Impacts Of Maternal Child Marriage And Maternal Intimate Partner Violence And The Moderating Effects Of Proximity To Conflict On Stunting Among Children Under 5 In Post-Conflict Sri Lanka, Ruvani W. Fonseka, Lotus Mcdougal, Anita Raj, Elizabeth Reed, Rebecka Lundgren, Lianne Urada, Jay G. Silverman

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

This study aimed to understand whether maternal child marriage and past year intimate partner violence (IPV) impact stunting among Sri Lankan children under 5 years old, and, secondarily, whether proximity to conflict is associated with stunting. Additionally, we assessed whether proximity to conflict moderates the relationships between maternal child marriage and past year IPV (sexual, physical, and emotional). We tested these questions using logistic regression analyses of the 2016 Sri Lankan Demographic and Health Survey (n = 4941 mother-child dyads). In country-wide adjusted analyses, we did not find associations between maternal child marriage or IPV and stunting (p > 0.05). Children …

Challenging Conventional Approaches To Teaching Creative Writing In Italy, Elena Traina Mar 2022

Challenging Conventional Approaches To Teaching Creative Writing In Italy, Elena Traina

Journal of Creative Writing Studies

This is an overview of how creative writing is currently taught in Italy and of the reasons why this discipline is struggling to establish itself in public universities. After investigating the relationship between Italian academia and creative arts, I will look at the private nature of these courses in relation to issues of inclusion and diversity; and will highlight some of the pedagogical concerns deriving from having imported the anglophone model. Looking at the wider cultural sector, I will present some reflections on the Italian book industry as a system which prioritises personal connections over literary value, a process often …

“Meddling In The Work Of Another”: Πολυπραγμονεῖν In Plato’S Republic, Brennan Mcdavid Mar 2022

“Meddling In The Work Of Another”: Πολυπραγμονεῖν In Plato’S Republic, Brennan Mcdavid

Philosophy Faculty Articles and Research

The second conjunct of the Republic’s account of justice—that justice is “not meddling in the work of another”—has been neglected in Plato literature. This paper argues that the conjunct does more work than merely reiterating the content of the first conjunct—that justice is “doing one’s own work.” I argue that Socrates develops the concept at work in this conjunct from its introduction with the Principle of Specialization in Book II to its final deployment in the finished conception of justice in Book IV. Crucial to that concept’s development is the way in which the notion of “another” comes to …

Black Cemeteries Matter: The Erasure Of Historic Black Cemeteries In Polk County, Florida, Juliana C. Waters Mar 2022

Black Cemeteries Matter: The Erasure Of Historic Black Cemeteries In Polk County, Florida, Juliana C. Waters

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In the past several years, the Tampa Bay area has experienced a reckoning with regard to the intentional erasure, destruction, and abandonment of historic African American cemeteries such as Zion Cemetery in Tampa or St. Matthews Baptist Church Cemetery in Clearwater. Scholars, journalists, community members, archaeologists, and others have contributed to a growing movement that aims to identify and document these sacred sites in an effort to prevent further destruction. In this vein, this project aimed to identify and record cemeteries in Polk County, examine the processes leading to the erasure of historic Black cemeteries, the history surrounding erasure on …

Aesthetic Response To The Fires At Notre Dame: A Case For Rhetorical Aesthetics Within Conventional Rhetorical Analysis, Amanda Clifford Mar 2022

Aesthetic Response To The Fires At Notre Dame: A Case For Rhetorical Aesthetics Within Conventional Rhetorical Analysis, Amanda Clifford

Theses and Dissertations

The field of rhetorical aesthetics has a long and rich history. Despite that history, however, aesthetic artifacts have yet to be considered with the same weight that conventional rhetorical artifacts are. My project is to consider the rhetorical effectiveness of aesthetic artifacts, making a case for more inclusion of these types of artifacts in rhetorical theory. I will demonstrate the effectiveness of the aesthetic by performing a comparative analysis of both an aesthetic and conventional reaction to the 2019 fires at Notre Dame de Paris. By considering the constitutive power of the aesthetic, I will argue that the depth of …
