The Old Testament’S Contribution To The Baptism Of Jesus In The Gospel Of Matthew, Andrew James Herbst Apr 2022

The Old Testament’S Contribution To The Baptism Of Jesus In The Gospel Of Matthew, Andrew James Herbst

Masters Theses

The Baptism of Jesus is an often overlooked or misunderstood event. There are numerous interpretations of what the Baptism of Jesus reveals, some of which alternate between Christ’s work and ministry as a man or a revelation of His deity. A clearer understanding of the Baptism event may be discovered through examining the Gospel of Matthew and relevant OT texts. Matthew depicts Jesus, God manifest in the flesh, as the Son of David who would fulfill OT prophecies and become the messianic King and Servant of Yahweh. The voice from heaven, the dove, and the anointing of the Spirit may …

Quiescent Sovereignty Of U.S. Territories, Michael J. Kelly Apr 2022

Quiescent Sovereignty Of U.S. Territories, Michael J. Kelly

Marquette Law Review

Under modern democratic theory, the font of sovereignty springs from the people; however, traces of its past as a power emanating from the Crown continue to haunt the domestic and international status of sub-sovereign legal entities such as U.S. Territories. Quiescent sovereignty describes that which is possessed by the people of the Territories; a sovereignty that is theirs, but that is wielded on their behalf by the federal government. Although fiduciary responsibilities attach to this arrangement, cycles of attention/neglect are the modus vivendi. Bilateral relationships between the Territories and the federal government are varied, but such differences should not impact …

Investigation Of The Structure, Chemistry And Functional Performance Of Novel Biochars, Julie Elizabeth Muretta Apr 2022

Investigation Of The Structure, Chemistry And Functional Performance Of Novel Biochars, Julie Elizabeth Muretta

Graduate Theses & Non-Theses

Biochars are a class of carbonaceous materials possessing high degrees of structural and chemical disorder in both organic and inorganic constituent phases. Despite this disorder, and in some cases because of this disorder, biochars have shown strong performance in adsorbing and even sequestering contaminants from soil, surface water and air. Biochar is the carbonaceous, solid product of heating carbonaceous feedstock in an oxygen-limited environment above 250°C, usually sourced from inexpensive, locally available agricultural and forestry wastes which can otherwise be difficult and expensive to dispose of. Biochar possesses attractive functional properties like high specific surface area, high micropore volume, and …

Identifying Factors Contributing To Differences In Success Rates Among Three Montana Trio Upward Bound Programs, Ismael Esai Longoria Apr 2022

Identifying Factors Contributing To Differences In Success Rates Among Three Montana Trio Upward Bound Programs, Ismael Esai Longoria

Graduate Theses & Non-Theses

TRIO is a federally funded program put into place to assist students from disadvantaged backgrounds reach postsecondary education. Southwest Montana TRIO assists Helena High School, Capital High School, Anaconda High School, and Butte High School. Helena, Anaconda, and Butte share similar demographics. Because of this, one might expect that the academic success rates would be fairly similar. My research indicates there are in fact significant differences. In order to best assist the schools assisted by Southwest Montana TRIO it is important to understand why differences are taking place. By using the U.S Department of Education standards to back this up …

Homosexual Persecution In The Holocaust, Ethan Ryan Apr 2022

Homosexual Persecution In The Holocaust, Ethan Ryan

Spring Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry

During the Holocaust, same-sex desiring men were persecuted alongside Jews, political prisoners, and other minority groups. The punishments that same-sex desiring men faced were directed at the act of homosexuality instead of the identity of homosexual. Incarceration in Nazi camps for same-sex desiring men included sexual violence and an attempt to convert these men to a heterosexual lifestyle. This research explores memoirs by homosexual holocaust survivors, including Heinz Heger and Pierre Seel, as well as experiences with same-sex desiring men written by a communist prisoner of Sachsenhausen, Harry Naujoks.

Reflections From Pioneering Women In Psychology, Jamila Bookwala, Nicky J. Newton Apr 2022

Reflections From Pioneering Women In Psychology, Jamila Bookwala, Nicky J. Newton

Gettysburg College Faculty Books

This volume traces the life journeys of a cohort of influential and transformative women in psychology, now in or nearing retirement, who have changed the discipline and the broader world of academia in significant ways. The 26 reflective essays record how these scholars thrived in an academic landscape that was often, at best, unwelcoming, and, at worst, hostile, toward them. They explicitly and implicitly acknowledge that their paths were inextricably linked with the evolution of women's roles in society; they highlight and celebrate their achievements as much as they acknowledge and recognize the obstacles, barriers, and hurdles they overcame. They …

Seeing Slavery, Lulu Hamissou Apr 2022

Seeing Slavery, Lulu Hamissou

Theses

This paper examines the resilience of Laura Clark, Carrie Davis, and Delia Garlic, three formerly enslaved women from Alabama whose memories and experiences during enslavement were part of a large slave narrative project called Born in Slavery: Slave Narratives from the Federal Writers’ Project, 1936 to 1938. The design exhibition, Seeing Slavery, visually communicates and portrays the accounts and portraits of the three women. Printed and embroidered fabrics visually communicate the narrative stories of these women, while their portraits are made from screen printed acrylic glass.

Following an introduction, a literature review details the history of the three slave …

Birmingham's Infrastructure Pioneers: The Elyton Land Company And Its Waterworks, 1871-1899, John West Battle Cheney

Theses

This paper examines the founding and development of the city of Birmingham, Alabama, focusing on the establishment and growth of its earliest, most vital infrastructure: railroads and waterworks. Early chapters explain how and why the city came to be carved from the wilderness, while later chapters describe how railroads and waterworks facilities made it possible for a set of frontier farms and villages- isolated, with no nearby river- to rapidly grow into a booming industrial metropolis. Analyzing the actions of Birmingham’s founder- the Elyton Land Company- and those of its subsidiaries- the Birmingham Water Works Company and the Highland Avenue …

This paper explores the concept of toys, what they are and for whom they are made. The paper also provides a brief history of designer toys and pop culture, and how pop culture helped fuel the designer toy industry. Ours, Emma J. Vitallo

Student Projects

This semester I have been researching and reading about artistic relationships, specifically Just Kids – detailing the collaborative partnership between Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe. I began working collaboratively and using my peers’ photographic knowledge and personal practices to understand more about my own photographic practice, style, and rituals. By making environmental portraits on a whim of five of my closest peers turned mentors turned collaborators and friends I am documenting our shared experiences in locations they occur. These locations are specific and significant to our connections – each of us shares these spaces with each other, our ideas, our …

James Monroe Whitfield's "The Vision": Apocalypse And The Black Periodical Press, Magdalena Zapędowska Apr 2022

James Monroe Whitfield's "The Vision": Apocalypse And The Black Periodical Press, Magdalena Zapędowska

English Language and Literature: Faculty Publications

The pessimism of James Monroe Whitfield's long, only partially preserved poem "The Vision" is possibly without parallel in antebellum African American literature. Mobilizing African American and broader American culture's preoccupation with the end of the world, Whitfield turns to allegory and apocalyptic prophecy to represent the massive scale of human sacrifice in a nation founded on enslavement and colonial domination. "The Vision" theorizes the regimes of oppression shaping the antebellum social order through what I term an apocalyptic aesthetic of annihilation, which emerges from the interaction of the poem's thematic, affective, and formal components. This aesthetic is concerned with imminent …

Extinction And Its Interventions In The Americas, Germán Vergara, Emily Wakild Apr 2022

Extinction And Its Interventions In The Americas, Germán Vergara, Emily Wakild

History Faculty Publications and Presentations

This forum argues that environmental historians ought to pay more attention to animal extinction—the disappearance of a lineage of life—than they have to date. Examining the pre-and post-extinction contexts of charismatic terrestrial vertebrates in the Americas certainly underscores the power humans have had over other animals and their habitats. Yet, the contingencies and unexpected results of conservation efforts merit no less attention. Indeed, by uncovering important nuances in the extension of human power, they provide insights into the conditions critical to avoid extinction. As environmental history has long shown, abstracting the human from the nonhuman world distorts the history of …

The 1895 Cézanne Show At Vollard’S Revisited, Robert Jensen Apr 2022

The 1895 Cézanne Show At Vollard’S Revisited, Robert Jensen

Art and Visual Studies Faculty Working Papers

The Cézanne show at Ambroise Vollard’s Paris gallery in November-December 1895 was a watershed moment for both artist and dealer. Both the artist and the dealer’s commercial successes date from this moment. The composition of Cézanne’s collectors was also largely divided by this exhibition. Who they were and what particular paintings they bought are listed below. The relative uniqueness of this solo exhibition is highlighted. The paper also addresses the still open questions as to how the paintings for the show were selected, by whom, and which pictures were included. In doing so it adds to the list of paintings …

Evaluating The Validity Of Restrictions On Blood Donation Eligibility For Men Who Have Sex With Men (Msm) In The United States, France, And Switzerland, Swathi Gorantla

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

For the first time in a decade, the number of new human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) diagnoses is higher for heterosexual people compared to gay and bisexual men (Florêncio, 2022). Additionally, in the United States, the American Red Cross has declared a national blood crisis due to the nationwide shortage of donated blood. During this crisis, charged with the new information on HIV diagnosis rates, many advocates for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (LGBTQ+) community question why discriminatory policy surrounding gay and bisexual men donating still exist around the world. These policies are changing worldwide – several European countries have …

Gen-Z, Gender, & Governmental Grievances: A Post-Transition Political Philosophy For The Newest Generation Of Women In A ‘Failed’ State., Olivia Harvey

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Over a decade since the Jasmine Revolution in Tunisia, a new generation has come into adulthood, grappling with anxieties about their future in the midst of continuous national instability. This paper aims to bridge their sentiments of disillusionment and disengagement towards politics together with general conceptions of life by ‘Generation-Z’ women (between the ages of 18 and 30). The findings follow conceptions of history, freedoms, rights and personal life, particularly as they are affected by gender in Tunisian society. Specifically, this study is interested in how these aspects have changed from before to after the political changes of the past …
