From Acolyte To Apocalypse: Defiance Vs. Conformity In Things Fall Apart, Zoë Kales, Ethan Marunde May 2022

From Acolyte To Apocalypse: Defiance Vs. Conformity In Things Fall Apart, Zoë Kales, Ethan Marunde

Student Research

No community, or person, is perfect. In fact, that is why the search for paradise is ubiquitous in both literature and real life. So, when the British colonize and destabilize the inevitably flawed village of Umuofia in Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart, two camps form: those who defy the changes, and those who embrace them. To Okonkwo, the rise in “acolytes”—or followers—of the new religion brought by the colonizers is on par with apocalypse. In this presentation, we first detail the novel’s context, including a history of colonization in Nigeria and the life of Chinua Achebe. Next, we examine Okonkwo’s …

Harry Potter: The Power Of Fans, Rachel Roscoe '22 May 2022

Harry Potter: The Power Of Fans, Rachel Roscoe '22

Honor Scholar Theses

In order to begin to unpack the question of why do so many people connect with and are drawn to the world of Harry Potter, I thought it would be important to analyze certain themes that are present in each of the books of this series. However, because there are seven, I will be focusing my analysis on three. The books that I chose from the series are the first one, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, the fifth one, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and the seventh one, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. These particular …

Art Walk 2022: An Exploration In Collaboration And Creativity, Elena Collins '22 May 2022

Art Walk 2022: An Exploration In Collaboration And Creativity, Elena Collins '22

Honor Scholar Theses

My thesis project consists of three parts: research, organization of Art Walk 2022, and an original curation. It begins with researching community engagement, interdisciplinary studies, general arts administrative skills, and artistic curation. Using this research, I will facilitate and manage an arts festival (Art Walk 2022) that focuses on interdisciplinary projects created by various students at DePauw. Further. during Art Walk 2022, an installation of original art will be produced and displayed that synthesizes past projects with new ideas. This combination of theory and practice will help me synthesize the many, varied roles of an artist-curator and will allow me …

Furthering Philosophy For The Future: An Exploration Of The Benefits Of High School Philosophy Education And The Barriers It Faces, Alexander Spencer '22 May 2022

Furthering Philosophy For The Future: An Exploration Of The Benefits Of High School Philosophy Education And The Barriers It Faces, Alexander Spencer '22

Honor Scholar Theses

In this paper, I will present a picture of how philosophy education should be integrated into American high schools, I will build a case for the benefits of this integration, and I will respond to some challenges to the process of bringing philosophy into the classroom. I hope to show that expanding philosophy education and encouraging critical thinking is important. American high schools are in need of new methods of instruction in this era of misinformation and fruitless political discourse. I hope to show that philosophy education is one tool in the project of improving education, and thus society in …

Public Art In The United States By Black Artists (1980s - Present), Anthony L. Treadaway '22 May 2022

Public Art In The United States By Black Artists (1980s - Present), Anthony L. Treadaway '22

Honor Scholar Theses

The purpose of this project is to do further research on public art created by Black artists and to explore how their work has created change by looking through the lens of the specific mural and sculpture exhibits. I will be specifically focusing on artworks and artists from the early 1980s to the present day. In the end, this piece offers insight into the importance of public art in our diverse communities. Public art serves as a form of representation and historically Black voices have been silenced in this arena. The stakes of increasing the amount of public art that …

Image, Text, And Sound Through The Arabesque In Thoreau's Walden, Lupina Farhana May 2022

Image, Text, And Sound Through The Arabesque In Thoreau's Walden, Lupina Farhana

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

This essay looks at Thoreau’s Walden through the lens of the motif of the Arabic arabesque. It first considers the arabesque in a playful paradigm, that interrupts, crosses, and breaks boundaries through a Derridean parergon. However, this event results in an overturning of the binary that had, for centuries, deemed merely the center to hold the highest of importance. Art historian Cordula Grewe utilizes Derrida’s parergon to analyze the poems of Goethe in the context of an arabesque frame which gives the sensation of sound by imitating the repeatedly playful consonants of the text written in the center. Thus, text, …

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

My work is driven by my experiences as a woman, mother, in pregnancy and giving birth. My work investigates the censorship of women’s bodies, and explores the ways in which we can reconnect with and reclaim our power as autonomous beings in society. I employ storytelling to create space to acknowledge my own trauma, make space for people to tell their own story, and focus on healing through normalizing and de-censoring my body. By illustrating things like birth, menstruation, and miscarriage I ask the audience to even consider them. I am mindful of the idea that the things that we …
