Dies Legibiles Ii May 2022

Dies Legibiles Ii

Dies Legibiles

We are proud to present to the public the second edition of Dies Legibiles, Smith’s very own undergraduate journal of Medieval Studies! After the initial success we had in receiving submissions for last year’s edition, we were naturally worried that the journal might experience a lull–but this was, wonderfully, far from the case! Our submissions this year were numerous, and explore a number of extraordinarily unique and important topics.

The Artists Of The Walter Crane Fan: Gender And Performance In 1895, Caroline Haller May 2022

The Artists Of The Walter Crane Fan: Gender And Performance In 1895, Caroline Haller

Theses

The curiosity of the Walter Crane Fan, an autograph fan created in 1895, is that despite featuring forty signatures of famed artists, writers, musicians and public figures, it has received little critical examination. The re-discovery of the Walter Crane Fan when it came to auction, prompted its inclusion in The Cult of Beauty: The Aesthetic Movement 1860-1900 exhibition originally held at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London in 2011. Then, the Crane Fan was the focus of Robyne Calvert’s essay “An Artistic Fan in Victorian Society” in Connecting Whistler: Essays in Honour of Margaret F. Macdonald. However, to date, …

The Taxonomy Of Extinction: Brian Jungen’S Tombstone, Jasen Evoy May 2022

The Taxonomy Of Extinction: Brian Jungen’S Tombstone, Jasen Evoy

Theses

This thesis focuses on the recent work (Tombstone, 2019) by Brian Jungen, a Canadian artist of mixed European and Dane-zaa heritage. The work is explored in detail, leveraging concepts present in Jungen’s existing body of work to extract intent and meaning through Jungen’s complex use of space, materiality, and iconography. Tombstone is a large scale, multimedia sculpture consisting of white plastic Rubbermaid stepstools cut and assembled into the form of a turtle or tortoise shell resting on a bank of thirty-seven black filing cabinets. While Tombstone initially presents itself as aesthetically sparse, it is a deeply-layered commentary on inequity, power …

An Exploration Of Bengali Identity With Material And Visual Artifacts Through Painting, Farah Billah May 2022

An Exploration Of Bengali Identity With Material And Visual Artifacts Through Painting, Farah Billah

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Painting is and always has been, at its root, an exploration of identity for me. My current collection of work explores the stripping of Eurocentric beauty standards and presentation of the divine of the Brown Body to reveal my version of the human spirit. My drawings, paintings, and a hand-tufted rug all made with a surreal, colorful representation of the coming together of body and mind.

'The Street Scene Prologue': Holocaust Survivors, The American Nazi Party, And Exodus, Jason Van May 2022

'The Street Scene Prologue': Holocaust Survivors, The American Nazi Party, And Exodus, Jason Van

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

During the early 1960s when the American Civil Rights movement was beginning to gain momentum, another movement across the world was taking place to solidify the newly formed country of Israel as a sovereign state. To commemorate the foundation of Israel, American director Otto Preminger created the film Exodus, adapted from a book of the same name by Leon Uris. George Lincoln Rockwell, leader of the American Nazi Party, decided to take action by traveling throughout the country with his closest members to protest the film. Rockwell and his group of Nazis were outraged by the pro-Zionist depictions and the …

"Expendable As A Battleship:" Uaw Local 50, Demobilization, And The Post War Future Of The Willow Run Bomber Plant, 1940-1945, Andrew W. Good

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The Willow Run Bomber Plant was leased to the Ford Motor Company during World War II and specialized in the mass production of Consolidated B-24 bombers. While Willow Run’s war service and production record is often highlighted, the plant’s demobilization experience is often ignored along with the United Auto Workers Local 50 that represented the plant’s 21,000 workers. Allied victory in Europe was accompanied with layoffs that threatened Willow Run’s continued operation. This study investigates the advocacy and goals of Local 50 leaders as they underwent a unique campaign through the spring and summer of 1945 that advocated for the …

Directing A Contemporary Deconstruction Of A Chekhov Play, Margaret Anne Tonra May 2022

Directing A Contemporary Deconstruction Of A Chekhov Play, Margaret Anne Tonra

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

When examining Stupid Fucking Bird, it is important to recognize that it is a deconstructed adaptation of Chekhov’s The Seagull. Aaron Posner’s, Stupid Fucking Bird, shakes up Chekhov’s old form with something new and, perhaps, more relevant than its original form. The thesis includes a detailed analysis of the production process and post-production analysis of Stupid Fucking Bird written by Aaron Posner and directed by Margaret Tonra at UNO, October 2021-February 2022.

Enchanting Music: How English Playwrights Use Music In Renaissance Witchcraft Plays, Alyssa Anders May 2022

Enchanting Music: How English Playwrights Use Music In Renaissance Witchcraft Plays, Alyssa Anders

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Music is an integral aspect of the Early Modern theater, but because most of this music is lost, scholars and students typically only analyze these works using literary theories. This approach does not allow for a full understanding these plays, which is especially true of witchcraft plays because witches typically utilize music for their spells. In this thesis, I am exploring the interdisciplinary connection of music and literature in the Jacobean witchcraft plays The Witch (c. 1616) by Thomas Middleton and The Tragedy of Sophonisba or The Wonder of Women (1604-1606). From my analysis of the existing music from The …

Decolonizing Female Archetypes: Creating An Oppositional Consciousness In Contemporary Chicana And Iraqi Women’S Fiction, Semah Salih Hussein May 2022

Decolonizing Female Archetypes: Creating An Oppositional Consciousness In Contemporary Chicana And Iraqi Women’S Fiction, Semah Salih Hussein

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In dominant imperialist discourses, women, such as Iraqi women and Chicanas, have been marginalized in political, social and economic structures and have been manipulated to maintain imperialist exploitation and processes. They have been frozen within certain archetypal configurations. Iraqi women have been misrepresented as victims of their culture and traditions, and Chicanas have been represented in derogatory terms or excluded from mainstream hierarchies of representation. This study examines some counternarratives and oppositional subjectivities/ consciousnesses provided by Iraqi and Chicana women writers through their utilization of the legacy of a number of fictional and historical female figures. The primary texts analyzed …

Authors As Figures, Functions, And Persons: Theories On Intention, Tyler M. Preston May 2022

Authors As Figures, Functions, And Persons: Theories On Intention, Tyler M. Preston

Honors Theses

My honors thesis is an exercise in which I approach a singular work with three different theories on authorial intent and analyze how the author figure exists along with the work through the lens of each theory. After providing background for the discourse on authorial intention, I explore the theories of Michel Foucault, Alexander Nehamas, and Reed Way Dasenbrock and then demonstrate what each theory looks like in practice by applying each theory to Maxine Hong Kingston’s novel The Woman Warrior. I consider how the different theories fit together, where they differ, and how practical they are as standards of …

Social Change Through Rhetorical Action: Case Studies Of Two Tennessee Women In The Archives, Dalton Burks May 2022

Social Change Through Rhetorical Action: Case Studies Of Two Tennessee Women In The Archives, Dalton Burks

Honors Theses

In conversations about social change and activism, the American South is rarely represented as a place where such change occurs. However, this analysis will focus on two unlikely activists who used their writing and voices to advocate for change on a local scale in their individual communities. These activists are Emma Bell Miles, an artist, naturalist, and creative writer from Chattanooga, Tennessee who wrote a persuasive column in the Chattanooga News on feminism and naturalism, and Mary Cunningham, a local librarian and mother from McMinnville, Tennessee who created the Magness Library and Community House. This thesis argues that Miles and …

Speech Acts As Contingent Encounters: Realizing Agency In Contaminated Worlds, Zachary Cross May 2022

Speech Acts As Contingent Encounters: Realizing Agency In Contaminated Worlds, Zachary Cross

Honors Theses

Agency is realized in the act of speaking, an act which is always contingent on a collaborative process that transforms all parties involved. We think and act with one another and our concepts, there is no act of speech prior to encounter. In this paper I explore different ways which language shapes our thinking and play with those structures to use them as models for realizing agency. This exploration became personal insofar as exploring ways of thinking transformed my own sense of agency in the speech act. The completion of this paper is thus essential to its conclusion.

Coming Out As A Queer Latinx, Giselle Barajas May 2022

Coming Out As A Queer Latinx, Giselle Barajas

Audre Lorde Prize

This paper explores the feminist theories post-colonialism and gender theory to better understand the coming out experience for the queer latinx community. The latinx community face unique hurdles when coming out including battling cultural values, colonialism, language barriers, and identity. In order to better understand the coming out journey of queer latinxs and create safe queer spaces I propose that we reimagine familismo to emphasize love and acceptance over colonial ideas of machismo and marianismo. We can also decolonize both feminist theory and language.

(De)Legitimizing Genres: Rhetoric And Tactical Institutional Critique., Walker Smith May 2022

(De)Legitimizing Genres: Rhetoric And Tactical Institutional Critique., Walker Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation forwards a rhetorical theory of institutions that centers their genre-based communications, redefines institutions in relation to organizations, and contributes to the field’s understanding of how communities collaboratively rewrite entrenched institutionalized practices from the outside, thus reducing the harm that institutions can enact. Using evangelical church policies on marriage as a case study, I answer the following questions: How do historically sedimented institutions, their genres, and their practices rhetorically impose, legitimize, and regulate certain patterns of social life? How does an evangelical Christian church manage to govern the gendered and sexual lives of their members and maintain their power …

Authentically (Un)Real Assessing Vh!'S Basketball Wives And Its Violent & Colorist Portrayals Of Black Women., Wilma Denae Powell May 2022

Authentically (Un)Real Assessing Vh!'S Basketball Wives And Its Violent & Colorist Portrayals Of Black Women., Wilma Denae Powell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Does reality television serve as solely a form of entertainment, or could reality television also be maintaining hegemonic beliefs and reinforcing biased views of Black women? Since 2010, Vh1’s Basketball Wives has given audiences the opportunities to entertain themselves by watching women who are/were married to, dating, or are the mothers of children fathered by professional basketball players. Despite the show’s name, few members of the cast are currently married and audiences only get mere glimpses of the cast in motherly or marital interactions. So, what does Basketball Wives offer audiences who tune in to watch Black women for entertainment? …

The Glass Coffin: Gothic Adaptations And The Formation Of Sexual Subjectivity., Colton T. Wilson May 2022

The Glass Coffin: Gothic Adaptations And The Formation Of Sexual Subjectivity., Colton T. Wilson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is now an almost foregone conclusion that classic depictions of vampirism resonate with contemporary queer audiences. A sympathetic response to the monster’s persecution is often the key factor in these arguments, yet little attention is paid to the textual details that prompt such a process of identification. This study posits that the iconography used to establish a connection between monstrosity and non-normative sexuality has its origins in Victorian Gothic fiction, whose descriptions of vampirism were assimilated into the discourse of the fin-de-siècle medical field known as sexology. Theories that defined homosexuality as an illness with physical and psychological symptoms …

Contemporary Blackface Theatre: Exploring Split Second From An Authentic Black Lens To Combat White Stereotypes., Lamar Alonzo Hardy May 2022

Contemporary Blackface Theatre: Exploring Split Second From An Authentic Black Lens To Combat White Stereotypes., Lamar Alonzo Hardy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This MFA thesis defines Contemporary Blackface Theatre as exemplified in Dennis McIntyre’s Split Second, which was produced in Fall 2021 by the Department of Theatre Arts at the University of Louisville. Cast as Val Johnson, I aimed to find the truth within a Black character created from the white playwright’s limited perspective. In addition to an analysis of Split Second, my study of Contemporary Blackface Theatre examines the racist ideologies from F.M. Alexander’s point of view on black people and how I create truthfulness in my own black body. I detail how I used the Black Acting Methods: …
