Part of that’s because of the democratizing power of the internet, part of that’s because it’s a style that’s slowly become more prevalent over many years. Nikkei And Chifa: Two Styles Of Peruvian-Asian Fusion, With Two Different Trajectories, Megan Caceres Dec 2021

Nikkei And Chifa: Two Styles Of Peruvian-Asian Fusion, With Two Different Trajectories, Megan Caceres

Capstones

Nikkei and Chifa, two different styles of Peruvian-Asian fusion, have established a foothold in New York and New Jersey, but each style is taking a very different path to growth. Nikkei restaurants, a blend of Japanese and Peruvian ingredients, are booming, especially at the higher-end, while Chifa restaurants, which mix Chinese and Peruvian customs and ingredients, are struggling to gain traction; this reality follows how New Yorkers undervalue restaurant concepts that are not mainstream or exclusive, and this holds implications for spots that depend on word-of-mouth or other patrons to gain buzz and notoriety, since they do not have star …

The Case For Pinyin: A Suggestion, Stephen Krashen Dec 2021

The Case For Pinyin: A Suggestion, Stephen Krashen

Chinese Language Teaching Methodology and Technology

I present the following hypotheses: Providing students with comprehensible and interesting reading material in pinyin will result in improved acquisition of oral/aural Mandarin. This additional competence in Mandarin will make texts written in Hanzi more predictable and easier to understand, resulting in improved acquisition of Hanzi. If these predictions are confirmed, it means more rapid acquisition of Mandarin and more efficient acquisition of characters.

What Is Literary? Teaching Diverse, Literary Young Adult Novels In The Secondary Classroom, Kathryn Taylor Dec 2021

What Is Literary? Teaching Diverse, Literary Young Adult Novels In The Secondary Classroom, Kathryn Taylor

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis defines what makes a novel literary and examines the benefits of introducing Young Adult literature into the English curriculum. The current classical canon that is taught in secondary classrooms consists almost entirely of books written by white, Eurocentric men with a few token novels from women, authors of color, or queer authors. While the books in the classical canon have earned their place there, the rapidly changing demographics in our secondary schools mean that the majority of our students no longer share the same characteristics as these authors. They have largely different life experiences and struggle to connect …

Subject Disintegration: Identity And Alterity In The Age Of The Hyperreal, Sophie Ell Dec 2021

Subject Disintegration: Identity And Alterity In The Age Of The Hyperreal, Sophie Ell

American Studies ETDs

What do the signs “identity” and “alterity” point to within the economy of representation and the logic of simulation that govern the present era? How does the visual saturation of a screen-mediated life affect the study of identity? Where does the information overload within which we operate leave the production of knowledge about otherness? My goal in this project is not to resolve these questions, but rather to linger in them. Focusing on various portrayals of categorical identities in film, photography, and digital media, I utilize a semiotic analysis to examine the formulaic, repetitive maneuvers of signification practices that reproduce …

Using a testimonio methodology, this study provides insight on how language ideologies, family, and education in the Texas Borderlands impacted two Latina teachers’ view and understanding of their identity. Our experiences with our bilingualism affected the way in which we perceive ourselves and our community. The reflection and analysis of our experiences allowed us …
