A High And Lonely Destiny, Gracia Fay Ellwood Apr 2020

A High And Lonely Destiny, Gracia Fay Ellwood

Mythopoeic Society Seminar Proceedings

Examines the recurring motif of people, both real and fictional, who believe they possess magical powers and a destiny that places them above normal human moral concerns and connections. Beginning with the biblical Simon Magus and continuing through the many tales of Merlin, Marlowe’s Dr. Faustus, and Adolf Hitler, and ending with Tolkien’s Saruman, Ellwood traces this complex to inner hunger and self-deception, and notes how some characters, such as Gandalf, escape this destiny through their sense of connection with others.

The Structure And Aesthetic Of Tolkien’S Lord Of The Rings, Randel Helms

Mythopoeic Society Seminar Proceedings

Describes five “laws” underlying Tolkien’s Middle-earth and how the action of The Lord of the Rings proceeds logically from them: the cosmos is ultimately providential; the result of an action is influenced by its intent; moral and magical laws are as important as physical laws; states of mind influence physical reality; and experience is the realization of proverbial truth or romantic convention.

Genetically Modified Organisms: Are They Really So Bad?, Erika Johnson Apr 2020

Genetically Modified Organisms: Are They Really So Bad?, Erika Johnson

KUCC -- Kutztown University Composition Conference

Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs), are a highly debated topic among society today. The argument as to whether they should be used for consumption appears to lie in the crossfire of safe vs. non-safe. On one side, lie those who appear to shrivel up when the word is only mentioned. On the other, lie those who believe in the good that can come from genetically modifying foods, merely hoping to keep up with the demand of an ever-growing world. While GMOs will not feed the entirety of those hungry in the world, it is a small step towards a greater cause. …

The Cia On Canadian Defence Policy, J.L. Granatstein Apr 2020

The Cia On Canadian Defence Policy, J.L. Granatstein

Canadian Military History

At the request of the Pentagon, in the spring of 1985 the Central Intelligence Agency prepared an assessment of Canadian defence policy. Brian Mulroney’s Progressive Conservatives had formed the government in the election of 4 September 1984 and, in the CIA’s view, the new administration was likely to be more interested in defence than the Liberals. Even so, the assessment observed that “Canadians generally think little about defense and when they do, reject outright the idea of giving defense priority over maintaining the social welfare system.”

The Role Of Agenda Melding In Measuring News Media Literacy, Christine Mcwhorter Apr 2020

The Role Of Agenda Melding In Measuring News Media Literacy, Christine Mcwhorter

Journal of Media Literacy Education

During the past few decades, educators, advocates and researchers have developed initiatives to increase news media literacy. Recent surveys indicate that audiences combine agendas from various media to suit their own needs through group discussion. This process is called “agenda melding.” Agenda melding includes the “need for orientation” function in a social context that acknowledges that the perceived importance of news issues changes in relation to their discussions with others. Using an online survey instrument with a sample of young adults, this study measures the level of news media literacy in young adults and examines the relationship between news media …

Is That Media Literacy?: Israeli And Us Media Scholars’ Perceptions Of The Field, Ornat Turin, Yonty Friesem

Journal of Media Literacy Education

Sixty-nine media scholars from Israel and the Unites States responded to an online questionnaire aimed to identify the boundaries of media literacy. The participants received a list of thirty-two potential titles for a final paper and were asked to rate the relevancy of each topic for an undergraduate media literacy course. While the statistical analysis showed no significant difference in the ranking, deviations and distributions demonstrate disagreements as to what is important or marginal in the field. Protectionist topics were ranked high as well as topics involving children, digital media, and popular culture. It also appears that media education has …

Mobile Phones In The Classroom: Policies And Potential Pedagogy, Pamela L. Morris, Susan H. Sarapin Apr 2020

Mobile Phones In The Classroom: Policies And Potential Pedagogy, Pamela L. Morris, Susan H. Sarapin

Journal of Media Literacy Education

Many university instructors (76% of our survey) have a mobile phone policy in their classrooms, due to the distractions of unregulated use. Yet only about half of those who ask students to put down their phones report that these policies are effective. Given that students want to and will use their phones, are instructors taking the opportunity to integrate these mobile devices as a part of media literacy or other pedagogy? We conducted a nationwide survey of more than 150 college instructors to explicate what policies are used, and where they come from; how they are enforced (e.g. rewards and …

Community Psychology's Impact On Public Health And The Experience Of Marginalization, Katie Hudick Apr 2020

Community Psychology's Impact On Public Health And The Experience Of Marginalization, Katie Hudick

Richard T. Schellhase Essay Prize in Ethics

Vulnerable and marginalized populations face a series of risks and dangers throughout their daily lives. This is not simply limited to explicit forms of discrimination and hatred, but systemic forms of oppression and discrimination which limit those not belonging to more privileged and affluent socioeconomic or sociocultural groups. Community psychology operates as a means of analyzing how environmental and social factors impact specific demographic groups within a larger population and by extension the experience of mental health specific to these groups (Townley, Brown, & Sylvestre, 2018). In the application of this field, it is critical to understand the dynamics of …

To achieve this, the guide focuses on having text including each princess’s name, lifespan, legacy, and appropriate phonetic transcription. The guide also includes decorative elements; the decorative elements, linking back to the culture of each African princess. Research methods include, but …

Ethical Considerations Regarding Paternalism In Medicine, Lola Holcomb Apr 2020

Ethical Considerations Regarding Paternalism In Medicine, Lola Holcomb

Richard T. Schellhase Essay Prize in Ethics

Paternalism and autonomy are typically conceptualized as opposing theoretical frameworks. With respect to medical ethics, autonomy is practiced by the patient when he/she has liberty and control over his/her own medical matters, and his/her opinions supersede those of the physician. Paternalism is practiced by the physician when he/she restricts the patient’s autonomy (sometimes against the patient’s will) to promote health and well-being while discouraging undesirable behaviors. This paper details and analyzes a number of cases of medical paternalism in practice, both from the past and in the present day, with the purpose of examining associated ethical considerations. Attention is given …

Defending The Genetic Selection Of Intelligence: A Moral Exploration Of Principle, Chase Opperman Apr 2020

Defending The Genetic Selection Of Intelligence: A Moral Exploration Of Principle, Chase Opperman

Richard T. Schellhase Essay Prize in Ethics

This paper assumes a basic understanding of Aristotelian philosophy, but that which I draw from is both explicated and articulated in the paper in a way which makes the philosophy salient. One can look to Book II of The Nicomachean Ethics, the edition to which I referred is listed in the works cited, to further their understanding of the philosophy from which I am drawing, but to do so is not necessary. In what follows, I wrestle with the ethical issues related to the subject of the genetic selection of intelligence, both in its positive and negative forms, and offer …

A Sensual Exploration Of Melancholy, Rachel Blumer Apr 2020

A Sensual Exploration Of Melancholy, Rachel Blumer

Showcase of Undergraduate Research and Creative Endeavors (SOURCE)

What does it mean to be melancholy? It is a distinct and personal emotion—a type of sadness and a feeling all its own. Melancholy is not something people usually seek out, but it can be a comfortable, pensive, and creative space to sit in. The beautiful thing about melancholy is how one is able to be both joyful and sorrowful at the same time. I began the project by conducting a survey about what others think sadness smells, tastes, and sounds like. I have also researched poetry and music. I explore melancholy in different mediums and creative techniques, including a …

Unhinged: Anthology, Elizabeth Shepard Apr 2020

Unhinged: Anthology, Elizabeth Shepard

Showcase of Undergraduate Research and Creative Endeavors (SOURCE)

Unhinged explores women in mythology and religion that are perceived as “evil,” but in my telling, are reincarnated as modern, everyday female leads. The theme of Unhinged: Anthology is how women fight oppressive forces, not shying away from female identity and power. I’ve adapted my stories from myths and folklore from other cultures. The first three stories in Unhinged: Anthology are: “The Huldra“ (Norse), “The Rangda” (Balinese) and “The Maenad” (Greek). I’ve written these stories in the form of scripts, approved by my committee members. Because traditional black-and-white high contrast adds to the horror aesthetic, the medium for the pages …

Concertante For Sho And Jazz Orchestra, Susumu Watanabe Apr 2020

Concertante For Sho And Jazz Orchestra, Susumu Watanabe

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances

“Concertante for Sho and Jazz Orchestra” is a multi-movement concert piece designed to exhibit both the virtuosity of sho and its orchestral color and dynamism. There are three independent movements, each of which has multiple sections which are subdivided by the alternation of tempo, mood and musical context. The title “Concertante” simply implies a style of composition reflecting a brilliant and virtuosic display of instrumental dexterity and musicality for the solo sho part, and also the various individual instruments and instrumental sections in the 16-piece jazz orchestra.

Sho is a wind instrument which is almost exclusively used for Gagaku, Japanese …

"Let Us Look Into The Future": Representations Of Upward Social Mobility In Soviet Space Culture, Richard Higginbotham Apr 2020

"Let Us Look Into The Future": Representations Of Upward Social Mobility In Soviet Space Culture, Richard Higginbotham

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Beginning in 1957 with the launch of Sputnik, the world’s first artificial satellite, the Soviet Union initiated what would come to be known as the Space Age. This scientific endeavor produced an enormous and unprecedented cultural phenomenon identified by historians today as “space culture,” or “cosmic culture.” This “space culture” permeated both official and popular discourse in the Soviet Union from the time of Khrushchev to the fall of Communism in 1991, and an examination of how space exploration was represented in the USSR is critical to understanding the society more broadly. Most historians have understood the Khrushchev Era as …
