Experiencing Authority: The Wife Of Bath's Deaf Ear And The Flawed Exegesis Of St. Jerome, David Pedersen
Experiencing Authority: The Wife Of Bath's Deaf Ear And The Flawed Exegesis Of St. Jerome, David Pedersen
Medieval Feminist Forum: A Journal of Gender and Sexuality
Although Chaucer’s Wife of Bath is among English literature’s most analyzed characters, scholars have been remarkably uninterested in one of her most unique traits: her deaf ear. Despite the fact that this disability is mentioned more often than any of her other physical characteristics, more even than the regularly discussed gap in her teeth, scholars have rarely spent more than a paragraph addressing the deafness, if they do so at all. This is no doubt due in part to the fact that scholars have assumed a symbolic link between the Wife’s inability to hear and her problematic scriptural exegesis, and …
Melusine, Invisible Leadership And The Future (In The Past), Jan Shaw
Melusine, Invisible Leadership And The Future (In The Past), Jan Shaw
Medieval Feminist Forum: A Journal of Gender and Sexuality
This paper considers the operation of “invisible” leadership in the figure of Melusine from the late Middle English romance Melusine. By invoking contemporary leadership theory, this paper identifies leadership maneuvers in Melusine that are similar to those often practiced by women today, but the discourses of gender identity then ultimately render Melusine’s leadership invisible, just as leadership discourses today often render female leadership invisible. By uncovering the operation of “invisible” leadership in the figure of Melusine and identifying commonalities with the leadership of women today, this paper aims to improve our understanding of the contemporary problem of the marked …

Involving Anthroponomy In The Anthropocene: On Decoloniality, Jeremy Bendik-Keymer
Involving Anthroponomy In The Anthropocene: On Decoloniality, Jeremy Bendik-Keymer
Faculty Scholarship
This book introduces the idea of anthroponomy – the organization of humankind to support autonomous life – as a response to the problems of today’s purported "Anthropocene" age. It argues for a specific form of accountability for the redressing of planetary-scaled environmental problems. The concept of anthroponomy helps confront geopolitical history shaped by the social processes of capitalism, colonialism, and industrialism, which have resulted in our planetary situation. Involving Anthroponomy in the Anthropocene: On Decoloniality explores how mobilizing our engagement with the politics of our planetary situation can come from moral relations. This book focuses on the anti-imperial work of …

Gregory Of Nazianzus’ Concept Of “Knowable” Transcendence, William Orbih
Gregory Of Nazianzus’ Concept Of “Knowable” Transcendence, William Orbih
Obsculta
This paper outlines Gregory of Nazianzus’ thought on the knowability of transcendence and according to the Cappadocian Father, what knowing God entails. Beginning with a critical appraisal of what William Placher means by the domestication of Transcendence and his expressed dismay over “trivial images of God” in contemporary theology arising from overconfidence in the human capacity to understand God’s nature and the human ability to talk clearly and precisely about God after the seventeenth century. Arguing that Gregory articulated this problem long before Placher, this paper is an appraisal of Gregory’s response to an issue previously well articulated by Placher.

Charity And Dialogue Towards Ecumenical And Inter-Religious Communion, Jason Horstman
Charity And Dialogue Towards Ecumenical And Inter-Religious Communion, Jason Horstman
Obsculta
How something is said matters as much as what is said. Open dialogue and charity in debate is vital for proper Christian conduct. Vatican II documents are put forward as a standard of conduct. The fallout between Rome and Luther in the early 16th c. is put forward as a cautionary tale showing the stakes of failure to engage in debate with open-mindedness and charity. Writings from Augustine are put forward as a model and exemplar for how to engage in debate.

A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words: Social Media's Approach To Comfort Food, Isabella Paul
A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words: Social Media's Approach To Comfort Food, Isabella Paul
Honors Theses - Providence Campus
My thesis essentially explores the ways social media reveals subconscious connections to food. Research indicates that there is an existing connection between food consumption and nostalgia, which transports a person back to their childhood and its association with comfort. This concept of nostalgia helps us understand how people in their everyday lives share their personal comforts with the general public, and how the general public responds. To explore this phenomenon I conduct primary research in the form of collecting and analyzing Instagram posts relating to comfort food, using the hashtags #comfortfood, #nostalgia, and #foodnostalgia. I use this research to identify …

Toronto, located in the province of Ontario, is the largest city in Canada and has been named one of the most diverse cities in the world. The Greater Toronto Areas (GTA)’s ethnic diversity is synonymous with culinary diversity and an increasing demand for world foods. The GTA has been home to Indigenous peoples for thousands of years and three hundred years of immigration to Ontario from all corners of the globe have created an environment of exchange that continuously alters the food and drink available in the region. Toronto continues to maintain its multicultural character while growing at a pace …

Cooperatives, Agri-Tourism And Food Trails: Promoting Sustainable Food Systems In Le Marche, Italy, Daniela Monaldi, Brigit Ramsingh
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
The growing recognition of the environmental and health costs of the post-war industrial-production food model has led to urgent calls globally to transition to more sustainable food systems (Lang and Heaseman, 2004; Willet et al., 2019). Future fixes or ‘innovations’ that are disruptive to the current model of food production have been proposed to address the challenge of achieving such ‘Great Food Transformation’ (Willet et al., 2019, p.448). Such disruptions toward sustainability can include, for example, alternative food networks or short food supply chains, a turn (or return) to local food or ‘glocalism’, refocusing on small-scale farming, emphasising biodiversity and …
Thailand’S Tourist Cooking Schools: Disrupting Distance, Affirming Difference, Mary Beth Mills
Thailand’S Tourist Cooking Schools: Disrupting Distance, Affirming Difference, Mary Beth Mills
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
The growing popularity of culinary tourism inspires many travelers to view local cuisines as a way to connect to the people and places that they visit. Such cross-cultural encounters appeal in part because they offer to disrupt conventional commodity chains and their associated hierarchies, bringing together consumers and producers who would otherwise be separated by significant geographic distances and not infrequently by racial/ethnic, cultural, and/or classed inequalities. At the same time, however, transnational tourists’ relative ease of mobility is a form of global privilege that contrasts sharply with the more limited mobility and economic disadvantage characterizing many of the societies …

Culinary Change, Disruption, And Death: Do Traditional Cuisines Have A Future?, Anthony F. Buccini, Amy Dahlstrom
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
In recognition of a worldwide wave of extinction of minority languages and dialects, linguists are intensely engaged with the issue of language death. A related process of ‘cuisine death’ is also underway, likely on a similar scale to what is happening with languages. It is therefore striking that there is little discussion in food studies of cuisine death. In this paper, we discuss why the field, despite its awareness in a general way of the loss of specific foods and foodways, has failed to recognise the wholesale demise of traditional culinary systems. We situate this discussion within a typology of …

While culinary history is rife with disruptions driven by myriad factors, in this paper, derived from an in-progress article, I argue that the course of culinary evolution in Rome has been disrupted most recently by a fossilized dependence on gastrotourism, manifesting in what I term the “template menu” – an artificial construction intended to satisfy consumer demand for the authentic Roman gastronomic experience. While past research into culinary heritage tourism has emphasized the experiences and expectations of tourists and the preservation of traditions (World Tourism Organization, 2017; Richards, 2012, pp. 13-14) or more explicitly the efforts of destination marketing and …

Disrupting Culinary Education: Making A Case For A European Curriculum Framework For Culinary Higher Education, Sophie Dalton
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
Culinary arts is a neglected social and life science, which has historically been treated as a hands-on discipline with little academic input. Over the past decade there has been an influx of research in the discipline, specifically in culinary education across the world. Culinary arts is often relegated to the tourism sector, which fails to take into account that the culinary arts permeate through society, economy, culture and politics. It is also commandeered by the health and wellness sector, which has a singular focus and does not take into account the breadth and richness of the discipline. The late twentieth …

A New Exploration Of The Title Of "Cheng Xiang" In Xunzi, Chaobin Zou
A New Exploration Of The Title Of "Cheng Xiang" In Xunzi, Chaobin Zou
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The meaning of the title "Cheng Xiang" in Xunzi is controversial. Through close reading, this paper analyzes "Cheng Xiang" in Xunzi from such new angles as evolvement of literary style and cultural integration. It is found that "Cheng Xiang" in Xunzi consisted of three relatively independent articles when Xunzi originally wrote them. "Cheng Xiang" was not simply titled by using several characters in the opening passage. Instead, it was consciously named after its literary style. "Cheng Xiang" as a literary style resulted from the integration of rites and music culture in the court of the Zhou dynasty and folk ballad …
Indefinability, Mystique And Theological Implication In Adorno's Natural Beauty, Ting Wang
Indefinability, Mystique And Theological Implication In Adorno's Natural Beauty, Ting Wang
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
In Adorno's aesthetics, there is a natural beauty with a particular form: it has no clear concept, but only undefinable and impalpable characteristics. This distinguishes it from rational things, for the essence of natural beauty is unconditional and transcendent. Being transcendent, it is beyond reason. Since indefinability and mystique are appearances presented at its experience level, natural beauty can only be referred to through detour and negation. The rationale for Adorno's set of natural beauty originates from Kant's aesthetics. Like Kant, Adorno distinguishes knowledge from beauty; he differs from Kant in that Kant draws natural beauty from experience and leads …
"Istoria" In Leon Battista Alberti's Painting Theory: An Application Of The Method Pseudomorphosis Into The Study Of Renaissance Aesthetic Concepts, Xi He
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Della Pittura (On Painting) by Italian humanist Leon Battista Alberti (1404-1472) is considered as one of the most important works in the history of Western art theory. In this book, Alberti constructed a system of terminologies and a set of principles, in order to structurally describe the content of paintings, to accurately convey the technique of paintings, and to systematically understand and evaluate the meaning and value of paintings. With the method of "quasimorphosis", this paper explores Alberti's artistic term "istoria" in three steps. Firstly, it traces the origin of the term back to the Classical Age; secondly, it describes …
