From Protecting To Performing Privacy, Garfield Benjamin
From Protecting To Performing Privacy, Garfield Benjamin
The Journal of Sociotechnical Critique
Privacy is increasingly important in an age of facial recognition technologies, mass data collection, and algorithmic decision-making. Yet it persists as a contested term, a behavioural paradox, and often fails users in practice. This article critiques current methods of thinking privacy in protectionist terms, building on Deleuze's conception of the society of control, through its problematic relation to freedom, property and power. Instead, a new mode of understanding privacy in terms of performativity is provided, drawing on Butler and Sedgwick as well as Cohen and Nissenbaum. This new form of privacy is based on identity, consent and collective action, a …
Songs And The Soil, Mark Garry, Louise Reddy
Songs And The Soil, Mark Garry, Louise Reddy
Books/Book Chapters
Published in conjuction with an exhibition. The exhibition engages with the subjects of landscape and music/sound—exploring each element from historical, social and culturally associative perspectives; where landscape is recognised as a fluid term articulating physical space, idealised space and social space that reflects a convergence of physical processes and cultural meaning, and where song act as a response to, or archive, of personal, historical or socio-political instances. Several works engage landscape and musical sound intersect. The exhibition integrates a broad range of media, positions and responses to these research subjects; including two film works, a six-hour soundtrack for a room, sonic …

Providing Useful Feedback, Carol Damgen, Carol L. Damgen
Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy
This reflection is based on an educational assignment from my Oral Interpretation of Literature course at California State University, San Bernardino, April 2019.
Assessment is an essential part of education. However, assessment shouldn’t necessarily come from only one source-the teacher. I believe students benefit from receiving feedback from not only their instructor, but from their peers and lastly from themselves. This layered reflection allows one to learn from what others feel about their work. It is essential to have a second eye if we are to grow as learners.
This multi-perspective view allows the student to offer critical analysis to …

Planning An Effective Class Session, Carol Damgen, Carol L. Damgen
Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy
This reflection is based on an educational assignment from my Intro to Theatre course at California State University, San Bernardino, April 2019.
As an educator, I am always interested in combining new techniques with tried and true approaches. My hope is twofold- enhance my students learning and keep me inspired.
The concept of a beginning, middle and end in all classes, provides structure for your students and keeps the pedagogy focused.
I incorporated the “I do, we do, you do” approach to support a well-balanced framework for the class period. This technique is a creative take on a beginning, middle …

Developing And Using Grading Guides, Checklists, And Rubrics, Carol Damgen, Carol L. Damgen
Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy
This reflection is based on an educational assignment from my Intro to Theatre Arts course at California State University, San Bernardino, May 2019.
Providing students guidance when taking on a new assignment is essential. This direction may be achieved through a variety of sources: lectures, videos, examples of past students work, rubrics etc.
One approach, which may benefit the learner in the immediate and have a lasting impression, is teaching students to use the grading tool at hand (rubric/checklist) to improve assignments.
Following an example you have provided, the instructor will work with their students to use either a checklist …

Aligning Assessments With Course Outcomes, Carol Damgen, Carol L. Damgen
Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy
This reflection is based on an educational assignment from my Oral Interpretation of Literature course at California State University, San Bernardino, May 2019.
A consistent focus and goal for me as an educator is to align assessments with course outcomes.
The learning outcome for this class session focused on the cognitive approach- “students will develop the skills to communicate an oral interpretation of literature to an audience with believability, dramatic action and honesty.”
The intention of this class period was for my students to clearly understand the difference between acting, reading and oral interpretation. Oral Interpretation is a type of …

Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy
Giving students an opportunity to do group work in a Public Speaking course allows for an exchange of ideas from various points of view. This activity based on Persuasive Speech can further the students understanding of the assignment in a safe collective.
Working as a team develops strong foundations from which to build a powerful argument based not only on value but factual claims. The outcome of this group activity encourages the steps of building a problem/solution organizational pattern presentation.
The hope of this assessment is to scaffold into a solo presentation building from what the learner has employed from …

Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy
This paper was a reflection on responding to your students writing by beginning the process with positive feedback. As writing instructors, it is important to focus on what our students are doing correctly with academic writing submissions and then offer suggestions for improvement.
Reclaiming Lilith As A Strong Female Role Model, Kendra Levine
Reclaiming Lilith As A Strong Female Role Model, Kendra Levine
Senior Theses
We live in an increasingly patriarchal society, and in order for women to not only survive in our society, but thrive, they need strong female role models. Now the question is, how do we find strong female role models? The field of Religious Studies can be used to uncover said female role models by way of examining mythology and ancient texts. Perhaps one of the most unexpected role models to come out of this examination is Lilith. She is unexpected because her story is often told in a deeply negative way, and her portrayal in both mythology and rabbinical …

The World’S Greatest Hero: An Examination Of Superhero Tropes In My Hero Academia, Jerry Waller
The World’S Greatest Hero: An Examination Of Superhero Tropes In My Hero Academia, Jerry Waller
Master's Projects and Capstones
In this paper the author explores the cross-cultural transmission of genre archetypes in illustrated media. Specifically, the representation of the archetype of American superheroes as represented in the Japanese manga and anime series, My Hero Academia. Through examination of the extant corpus of manga chapters and anime episodes for the franchise, the author draws comparison between characters and situations in the manga series with examples from American comic books by Marvel Comics and DC Comics. By skillfully incorporating foundational themes of American superhero comics into the shonen manga genre, My Hero Academia joins a growing collection of media that draws …
The Darker Sides Of The Isekai Genre: An Examination Of The Power Of Anime And Manga, Curtis Lu
The Darker Sides Of The Isekai Genre: An Examination Of The Power Of Anime And Manga, Curtis Lu
Master's Projects and Capstones
This study illustrates characteristics of the isekai genre, presents connections between this genre and social problems commonly found in Japanese culture and society, and demonstrates the widespread impact of Japanese popular media. By analyzing some of the most popular forms and categories of isekai, this research pinpoints important characteristics – in the form of certain themes, characters, and plots – that contribute to social problems like suicide and shut-ins. Escapism is a central theme in many isekai works, and while escapism is healthy to a certain extent, some take the concept too far, often getting lost in their own …
The Nature Of Government And Civic Responsibility In Herman Melville’S Billy Budd, Sailor, Nirvani V. Anoop Ms.
The Nature Of Government And Civic Responsibility In Herman Melville’S Billy Budd, Sailor, Nirvani V. Anoop Ms.
Theses and Dissertations
My thesis examines how Herman Melville’s Billy Budd, Sailor raises destabilizing questions about the function of government, its manipulation of the governed through institutions such as the law, education, and religion, as well as its infringement on the rights of the individual in various, often subtle ways. The power relations aboard the British naval warship, Bellipotent, are explored through a Foucauldian lens, utilizing the ideas Michel Foucault elaborates in his lectures titled, “Governmentality.” How do governments ensure their continued existence as well as obedience from their citizens? How is justice in a society determined? How is one’s identity formed in …

Gutenberg, The White Rose, And The Empty Library: Monument Stories, Memorial Culture, And German University Campuses, Rachel Walters
Theses and Dissertations
This project evaluates three monuments on or near a university campus to determine the uses that monuments may provide at a university. First the Gutenberg bust at Johannes Gutenberg University serves as a useful image for promoting their identity that is affiliated with the legacy of the famous inventor. At Ludwig Maximilian University, the White Rose Memorial serves as an important representation of the university’s history that is associated with the White Rose Resistance Movement. The Empty Library Memorial in Berlin presents questions about the university’s role in commemoration efforts along with the challenges that Humboldt faces regarding the political …
Creating Identity In The Face Of The Other: A Levinian Reading Of Luis Vélez De Guevara's La Serrana De La Vera, Elizabeth Anne Jensen
Creating Identity In The Face Of The Other: A Levinian Reading Of Luis Vélez De Guevara's La Serrana De La Vera, Elizabeth Anne Jensen
Theses and Dissertations
Among the works of theater of the Spanish Golden Age which feature a mujer varonil, Luis Vélez de Guevara's play, La serrana de la Vera (1613), is particularly provocative. The intensity and ambiguity of the dual nature of its female protagonist, Gila, has been the subject of much recent scholarly investigation. The staging of the play lends itself to a Levinian reading, a new approach to this particular text and theater of the Golden Age in general. Emmanuel Levinas moves beyond metaphysics, phenomenology and intentionality to posit ethics as first philosophy. Levinas explains that the face of the Other is …

Locative Food: The Future Of Food Is A Peach, Adrian Bregazzi
Locative Food: The Future Of Food Is A Peach, Adrian Bregazzi
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
Locative food releases food from the hegemony of the restaurant, its rituals, codes, performative narratives, complexities, paraphernalia, processes, and entry fees; taking food out into a wider world, to locations that function along with the food to create provocations of the senses and a way of making us discern gastronomic possibilities afresh. This paper looks at Heston Blumenthal’s Sound of the Sea as the epitome of restaurant complexity; Roland Barthes’ experiences and responses to food in Japan in the late 1960s; Kenya Hara’s concepts of design and the design ethos underpinning MUJI; a brief overview of the picnic; and my …
Gastronomic Myths Of Disruption, Jonathan Brumberg-Kraus
Gastronomic Myths Of Disruption, Jonathan Brumberg-Kraus
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
“Innovation and disruption are ideas that originated in the arena of business but which have since been applied to arenas whose values and goals are remote from the values and goals of business.” (Jill Lepore)
Stories of food have been central to concepts of disruption from the dawn of time. It’s human nature to “make lemonade out of lemons,” - to use food metaphors and stories to spin the inevitable often traumatic experiences of change naturally occurring or intentionally engineered. This year’s theme encourages contemporary gastronomic interpretations of Clayton Christiansen and others’ business theory that “disruption” is essential for innovation …

On Wine And Food, Together, Patricia Rogers, Marcella Giannasio
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
The subject of food and wine pairing in the 21st century is an animated area of discussion. Consider this comment from the University of Arkansas Hospitality Program. ‘The concepts of beverage management or wine evaluation are far from under-utilised in most hospitality programs, but other than in relatively large hospitality programs, food and wine pairing is not provided as a standalone course and is covered at a relatively cursory level in most beverage management’. (Harrington et al, 2010, p.110) It is currently topical that a cultural change in the drinking and eating styles of the millennial and gen. z generations …
Drinking And Dining À La Russe In The Long Nineteenth Century, Graham Harding
Drinking And Dining À La Russe In The Long Nineteenth Century, Graham Harding
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
From the late 1850s until the eve of World War 1, the dominant British habit amongst the ‘dinner-giving grades’ was to dine ‘à la Russe’. In the words of cookery writer Phyllis Browne in 1885, the ‘difference between the old-fashioned dinner and the dinner à la Russe is that in the first all the dishes are put upon the table and carved by the host or his representative, and in the latter the food is not put on the table at all, but is handed round by servants’ (Newcastle Courant, 26 June 1885, p.6). Though this style was relatively formalised …

Expanding The Restaurant Value Chain Through Digital Delivery: A Significant Disruptor In The U.S. Restaurant Industry, Mark Traynor, Andrew Moreo, Shaniel Bernard, Sorcha O'Neill
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
The food industry has experienced enormous growth in the use of food delivery in recent years. More specifically, digitally enabled food delivery has emerged as the most disruptive force in the foodservice industry today. Increased consumer demand for convenience and variety in conjunction with the rapid pace of technological advancements are believed to be the driving factors for the emergence of this phenomenon (Carsten et al., 2016). Foot traffic at traditional dine-in establishments has dwindled as customers opt for online delivery instead, resulting in an altering of the restaurant value chain (Huang, Kohli and Lal, 2019). In particular, the emergence …
Speculative Futures For Mindful Meat Consumption And Production, Alexandra Kenefick
Speculative Futures For Mindful Meat Consumption And Production, Alexandra Kenefick
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
The stuff of food constantly shifts register between matter and meaning; animal and meat; calories and flavours, stretching and folding the time/spaces of here and now, ‘us’ and ‘them’, producing and consuming in complex and contested ways (Probyn, 1999 in Stassart and Whatmore, 2003, p.450). Meat consumption has entangled our human histories and lived experiences with those of other animals and humans unlike any other food. This co-evolution of experiences finds itself in deeply embedded sociocultural materials such as feasting and fasting rituals, religious dogma, gendered role divisions, ethics discourse, animal domestication, slaughter procedures, and government policies the world over …
Certified B Corps Within The Food Industry And Their Innovative Practices To Improve Environmental And Social Impact, Julie-Anne Finan
Certified B Corps Within The Food Industry And Their Innovative Practices To Improve Environmental And Social Impact, Julie-Anne Finan
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
: In this paper, I take an introspective look at the B Corp Certification to better understand why so many food companies have engaged with it as a means to improve their positive impact in an age where agricultural practices have a clear link to climate change and increasing social injustices across global food supply chains. The first part of the paper discusses the three stages involved in becoming a Certified B Corp - completing the B Impact Assessment, making a legal change to the company structure to consider all stakeholders and providing full transparency. The second part of the …

Safe, Risk-Free, Standardised Food For All, Is That What We Will Eat Tomorrow?, Penny Wilson
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
ur foods today are becoming more and more industrialised, manufactured, globalised; requiring rules and regulations to ensure the safety of those who eat. The rules and regulations are designed to manage the processes of big businesses and corporations that make our food. But these rules and regulations, once in place, come to cover all manner of foods that are local, artisanal and special. Those special, artisanal foods include those with an array of resident microbes creating, arguably, better more complex flavour, foods that might confer good health. But resident microbes are the target of the rules and regulations that ensure …
Homeward Bound, Kyle Peruch
Homeward Bound, Kyle Peruch
LSU Master's Theses
This paper explores agency and opposition as the underlining themes in the artworks of Homeward Bound. Both doctrines are important religious teachings that I have used to explore artistic ideas such as tension, balance and perspective. Each artwork displays a point of view on how I have confronted opposition in my lifetime. The sculptures are also meant to offer a sense of encouragement and hope to the viewer as they analyze each piece of art.
A Philosopher Explains Why Dance Can Help Pandemic-Proof Your Kids, Aili W. Bresnahan
A Philosopher Explains Why Dance Can Help Pandemic-Proof Your Kids, Aili W. Bresnahan
Philosophy Faculty Publications
Dance is good because it expresses human nature – it’s not just fun, although it is certainly fun. It’s not just exercise, either.
At its best, dance is an extension and expression of who we are as human beings in ways that can allow us to share emotions that increase our sense of community and connection. This is why, in good times and bad, in times of war, slavery, fleeing homelands and during pandemics, kids still bounce, leap and spin.

Impact Of Music Therapy On Hospice Patients, Amie M. Tipton
Impact Of Music Therapy On Hospice Patients, Amie M. Tipton
Theses and Graduate Projects
Music therapy is an adjunct healing modality designed to alleviate symptoms of existential pain and suffering hospice patients may experience as they transition into the final stage of life. The complexity of existential pain and suffering in hospice patients is a challenge for a hospice care team to treat and manage and emotionally testing on the patient’s support system. The purpose of this scholarly project is to evaluate a music therapy program at a local community hospice center as an aid to relieve patients’ existential pain and suffering they incur from their terminal illness and to increase hospice care providers’ …
