Hidden In Plain Sight. How ‘Disturbing’ Features Found Within Two Peruvian Textile Fragments Have Turned Into A ‘Significant Guide’ For Conservation, Griet Kockelkoren, Emma Damen

The Pre-Columbian Textile Collection Of The German Textile Museum Krefeld, Katalin Nagy
PreColumbian Textile Conference VIII / Jornadas de Textiles PreColombinos VIII (2019)
The German Textile Museum in Krefeld houses a considerable collection of pre-Columbian textiles. Most originate from graves in the narrow arid area of the Peruvian coast. The original aim was to build an assemblage with the pedagogical and methodological intention of presenting a broad range of very different textile techniques in the education for the future textile workers of the industry in said region. With this intention in mind samples were gathered, and soon a few samples turned into an impressive collection in which almost all established pre-Columbian cultures and periods of the area of the Central Andes are represented. …

Life Of A Peruvian Art Collector: Guillermo Schmidt Pizarro And The Fostering Of Public Collections Of Pre-Hispanic Art In The First Half Of The 20th Century, Carolina Orsini, Anna Antonini
PreColumbian Textile Conference VIII / Jornadas de Textiles PreColombinos VIII (2019)
Guillermo Schmidt Pizarro was a famous collector of Peruvian origins, active in Europe and the United States beginning in the early twentieth century. He traded numerous pre-Hispanic and colonial artifacts to the most important museums of the time. The focus of this preliminary work is to trace his biography and the sales he dealt with over thirty years of activity. Thanks to provenance information, the authors have been able to sometimes “virtually build up” fragments of textiles that he scattered among diverse public and private institutions. The importance of this research is consistent with the efforts of museums to trace …

After discovering photography in 2018 and dedicating the past year of my life to this passion I want to turn it into a career. This paper looks into the necessary research it takes to start a photography business. After carefully conducting the research, I created a business proposal appropriate to our current pandemic situation. I looked at different ways COVID-19 will affect my desired profession and the events and music industry in which I hope to work. After thoroughly familiarizing myself with these industries, I was able to discern that a career in photography is possible if I market myself, …

Before “Fire And Fury”: The Role Of Anger And Fear In U.S.–North Korea Relations, 1968–1994, Benjamin Young
Research & Publications
Since the beginning of the Korean War, the North Korean and U.S. governments have been involved in emotional warfare. From North Korea’s stated “eternal hatred” of the U.S. imperialists to Washington’s demonization of Pyongyang as an insidious Soviet pawn, emotions have been at the heart of this hostile bilateral relationship. Using three case studies (the 1968 Pueblo incident, the 1976 axe murder incident, and the 1994 nuclear crisis), I examine the ways in which the two sides have elicited emotional responses from their populations for their respective political goals. By portraying the U.S. as the source of all evilness in …

Cultural Diplomacy With North Korean Characteristics: Pyongyang’S Exportation Of The Mass Games To The Third World, 1972–1996, Benjamin Young
Research & Publications
During the 1970s and 1980s, the communist government in Pyongyang sent Mass Games instructors to the Third World in order to improve the image of North Korea abroad and promote its version of socialist modernity. The Mass Games, a huge choreographic gymnastics event of 100,000 performers, artistically exhibited the North Korean idea of "ilsim-dangyeol (single-minded unity).” In the era of decolonization, postcolonial leaders in the emerging Third World turned to East Asia for developmental inspirations and some leaders, notably Idi Amin of Uganda, admired the North Korean model of collectivism and discipline. The Mass Games, epitomized the communalistic values of …

Middle Horizon Textiles From Chimu Capac, Supe Valley, Peru, Amy Oakland
PreColumbian Textile Conference VIII / Jornadas de Textiles PreColombinos VIII (2019)
This article presents an overview of the textiles Max Uhle collected between November 4 and December 3, 1904 in the Middle Horizon cemetery at Chimu Capac in the Supe Valley, Peru. The total collection of objects numbers over 830 with 278 textiles including woven fragments, complete garments, woven and painted pouches, and over 155 painted textiles. The article discusses a sample of Chimu Capac textiles included in Uhle’s Supe field Notebook 67, in his hand-written Supe report, and textiles listed in the Supe Berkeley catalog. The Chimu Capac textiles compare with collections of Middle Horizon funerary objects made in coastal …

Darkness In The Parlor: Prostitution And Narratives Of Urban Exploration In London’S West End, Aiden Evans
Darkness In The Parlor: Prostitution And Narratives Of Urban Exploration In London’S West End, Aiden Evans
The Forum: Journal of History
Prostitution in London’s West End came to constitute a multidimensional transgression for middle-class observers during the late-Victorian period, contesting traditional distinctions between West and East, middle-class and working-class, and public and private life. First, through the use of Late Victorian urban exploration narratives, I will show that urban explorers applied a rigid conceptual framework to identify the working-class prostitutes occupying London’s affluent West-End. Rooted in class-based hierarchies, these systems of identification presumed that working-class prostitutes were categorically distinct, visible, and undisguisable in London’s West End. Moreover, I argue that this conceptual framework reveals the authors’ binary understandings of prostitutes’ public …

Sedentary Flesh: Nineteenth-Century French Orientalists And Bodies Of The Female Other, Amelia Aitchison
The Forum: Journal of History
As visual texts of subjectivity and ideology, paintings are uniquely useful tools for historical analysis. Peaking in popularity in nineteenth-century Europe, the enduring erotic mystification of the Turkish seraglio manifested frequently in the form of paintings. At this time, French academicism and realism rose in status internationally and, bolstered by the esteem of the Paris Salon and the competitiveness generated by the advent of photography, so too did elaborately (and misleadingly) detailed depictions of the Orient. This paper concerns the inherent politics of French depictions of Turkish odalisques, focusing on the orientalist discourse generated by the quasi-realistic style of nineteenth-century …
Noble Animals, Brutish Animals, Marcus William Hunt
Noble Animals, Brutish Animals, Marcus William Hunt
Between the Species
The paper begins with a description of a grey seal performing conspecific infanticide. The paper then gives an account of “nobleness” and “brutishness.” Roughly, a behavioural-disposition is noble/brutish if it is one that would be a moral virtue/vice if the possessor of the behavioural-disposition were a moral agent. The paper then advances two pairs of axiological claims. The first pair of claims is that nobleness is good and that brutishness is bad. The second pair of claims is about an axiological interaction between nobleness/brutishness and well-being. That any non-human animal lacks well-being is bad. Yet, it is worse that …

A metal railing of a viewing terrace is plowing with hard strokes over the panorama picture of Helvetian mountain tops. On another, an orange protection-net covers a construction site. Slats of a shutter traverse the view on yet another photography. And over the postcard idyll of the lake of Brienz a foghorn pushes white and big.

Ood For The Ghosts: Reading Ruin’S Being With The Dead With Nietzsche, Babette Babich
Articles and Chapters in Academic Book Collections
A focus on roots, localizations, usurpations, and obliterations together with commemoration and different fields of scholarly research, along with a thematic focus on Homer’s Nykia, permit Hans Ruin to revisit the foundations of history in Being with the Dead. Ruin draws on cultural sociology, including the work of Alfred Schütz, as well as Heideggerian historicity and the dead of the distant past, including archaeology and ethnography, paleography and physical anthropology. Ruin also engages Michel de Certeau’s Writing of History and its focus on the other in a necropolitical account tracked through interdisciplinary fields. In my reading I supplement Ruin’s critical …

Two Early Nineteenth Century Overseas Emigrants From Näfels, Kanton Glarus, Switzerland: Walter Marianus Hauser And The Colony At Red River, Canada, Susanne Peter-Kubli
Swiss American Historical Society Review
Walter Marianus Hauser (1777-1850) was a member of Näfels’ elite society that had gained its wealth and prestige from the foreign military service of Swiss and occupied important public offices in the Canton. At the start of the nineteenth century, that group increasingly lost its importance. While its social prestige endured and its members such as the von Müller, von Bachmann, and von Hauser continued to use their titles of nobility, their economic base, that is highly paid officer positions in foreign military service, had disappeared.

Swiss American Historical Society Review
Ilse Margarete Langhans was born in Allenstein, East Prussia (in present-day Poland), on December 21, 1932, the only daughter of Wilhelm Langhans and Margarete Emelie Issler. Her father was Oberstadtsgaertner (head city gardener) in nearby Koenigsburg until he was drafted into the German Army during World War II and killed in action, leaving behind Margarete, Ilse, older brother Juergen, and younger brother Dieter to fend for themselves when they and thousands of other ethnic Germans fled Russian forces invading East Prussia in the winter of 1944.

D'Une Violence L'Autre. Scénographie Des Rapports De Hiérarchie Et De Domination Dans La Préférence Nationale De Fatou Diome, Olga Hel-Bongo
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
Figures of vulnerability abound in contemporary francophone novels. Be it children soldiers, Black women in Monenembo and Kourouma's fictions, abused children or prostitution in Marie NDiaye, Fiston Mwanza and Fatou Diome's novels, the vulnerable subject, far from undergoing torments of a decadent and miserable life due to a situation of lack, often shows or hides a strength that often sharpens on contact with violence. Fatou Diome uses silence and writing to express the character's resistance to violence. For instance, the feminine subject sets up barriers around the self to counter the adversity of a world often depicted as intolerant, undifferentiated …
What Didn’T Happen: Analyzing Cal Poly’S Proposed Educational Assistance Program Following The Korean War, Sam Mcclintock
What Didn’T Happen: Analyzing Cal Poly’S Proposed Educational Assistance Program Following The Korean War, Sam Mcclintock
The Forum: Journal of History
Following the Korean War, Cal Poly was approached to take part in a program to provide technical education assistance to vocational schools in the Republic of Korea by the newly formed United States Foreign Operations Administration. This paper seeks to analyze that program in the context of Cal Poly’s history, especially in comparison to other international education programs and other dealings between the University and the United States Government. Although Cal Poly ultimately never took part in the Korea Program, the negotiation process still provides insight into the priorities of the college and its place in the context of US …
The Midnight Ride Of Sybil Ludington: A Forgotten Hero In The Shadow Of Paul Revere, Jessica Kay Rebollo
The Midnight Ride Of Sybil Ludington: A Forgotten Hero In The Shadow Of Paul Revere, Jessica Kay Rebollo
History
The American historical narrative has always been dominated by men; the achievements of women are often left to the past. One such woman who has been forgotten is Sybil Ludington, who in 1777 at the age of sixteen, rode forty miles to alert a unit of the Continental Army of advancing British troops. In this paper, I will compare Sybil Ludington to history’s most renowned nightrider, Paul Revere. I will study the way in which Sybil Ludington and Paul Revere are memorialized in American history, and expose the reason for the lack of Sybil Ludington’s popularity in the American historical …
