Maya America: Journal of Essays, Commentary, and Analysis
Maya America is pleased to publish this new Spanish-language novel by Gaspar Pedro González. Accepting an original and timely work from a leading Guatemalan intellectual and novelist would be easy enough, and Gaspar’s new novel is at once insightful and provocative. Rather than presenting his characters as villains or victims, the author leaves much up to the imaginations and sentiments of the reader to interpret and make sense of the thoughts and decisions of the main characters. "The Migrant Maya", ultimately uncovers some of the consequences of leaving home that go beyond the risks of jail and deportation, such as …

Yasser Al Sayed
Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)

Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)

Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)

Built heritage constitutes the physical components of the city's identity and image; adding historical, symbolic or cultural values to old buildings justifies the need to protect them, and to find a way to integrate them with the expected development of the city. On the other hand, the modernity of the city reflects the contemporary character of the society by adopting the current architectural trends and the newest technologies in construction. This paper investigates the historical cities image throughout its continuous development, where the built heritage needs to be integrated within the new urban context established by the rational development of …

A Criterion For Measuring Urban Intelligence, Yasser Fouda, Maged Zagow
Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)
The emergence of complicated problems encountering the urban environment, like absence of sustainability, has led to the initiation of the notion called "Intelligent Urban Conglomerations". It aimed to maintain a minimal level of balance between features of the urban environment, through clinging to more prudent actions towards urban policies, like increasing awareness of healthy environment, energy, mobility organization, and other issues. A great and persisting need has emerged for a practical scientific evaluation means for urban plans in all of their technical phases. The research aims to advance a practical methodology for monitoring and evaluating urban projects, throughout designing, implementation, …

Karen Weitzberg opens her book with a proverb from the early Somali independence era: “wherever the camel goes, that is Somalia.” This quote sets the precedence for the book illustrating Somalis’ rocky relationship with borders. Originally, Somalis were nomadic pastoralists that frequently moved around, crossing borders. However, after many African countries gained independence, new border lines were drawn up. As a result of this new reality, many Somali clans were forced to claim their territorial land and were also shut out from other regions, thereby impacting their way of life. Weitzberg, a Stanford graduate with a background in African and …

In this essay I discuss the education and experiences that were important for my formation as a Peace Educator and Advocate. The essay also briefly looks at the issue of peace research, teaching and activism, and how we at the Miriam College –Center for Peace Education believe that research and teaching are important but not enough. I recount research I helped to conduct that shows that peace education had a positive impact on those who participated in it, and then go on to describe our successful Iobbying efforts with the Philippine government and at the United Nations. I conclude with …
