"Strength Both Of Mind And Body": Asylum Reform And The Failure Of Moral Management In Elizabeth Gaskell's "Half A Life-Time Ago", Erica Larsen Aug 2020

"Strength Both Of Mind And Body": Asylum Reform And The Failure Of Moral Management In Elizabeth Gaskell's "Half A Life-Time Ago", Erica Larsen

Theses and Dissertations

In Elizabeth Gaskell's 1855 short story, "Half a Life-Time Ago," Susan Dixon faces a difficult choice regarding her younger brother, who has gone insane after an illness: should she try to care for him at home or commit him to the nearby Lancaster Asylum? Although fictional, Susan's situation highlights an important Victorian debate about the care of the insane and the reformation of public asylums. This debate, and the changes enacted by nineteenth-century asylum reformers as a result of the cultural conversation, brought new attention to the relationship between the mind, the body, and the will as the concept of …

“They Do Us The Honour Of Treating Us Like Gods, And We Respond By Treating Them Like Things”: The Problem With Fathers In William Shakespeare’S Titus Andronicus And J.M. Coetzee’S Disgrace, Colleen Walsh Aug 2020

“They Do Us The Honour Of Treating Us Like Gods, And We Respond By Treating Them Like Things”: The Problem With Fathers In William Shakespeare’S Titus Andronicus And J.M. Coetzee’S Disgrace, Colleen Walsh

Theses and Dissertations

Titus Andronicus’s obsession with honor eclipses his daughter's agency whereas David Lurie’s acceptance of his daughter's choices ultimately creates conditions of possibility. Coetzee represents Lurie as ultimately shedding patriarchal preoccupation with “dignity” and “honor.”

A Woman’S Portion: 5000 Years A Slave, Ann R. Glickman Aug 2020

A Woman’S Portion: 5000 Years A Slave, Ann R. Glickman

Theses and Dissertations

Slavery has existed for all of recorded history. The evidence is conclusive that slave systems have almost always been majority female. I suggest that slavery originated as an attempt to control female reproductive capacity, and that this attempt to control was not limited to enslaved women.

Abstraction And The Idea Of Sports, Julia Taszycka Aug 2020

Abstraction And The Idea Of Sports, Julia Taszycka

International Programs

In both art and sports, abstract behavior is very noticable. During the game players act in a very specific and irrational way. This kind of behavior is cause by different perception and attention to things that don't matter in everyday life. In relation to behavior and perception, the notion of purpose is also very abstract in sports. Sport activities themselves serve no purpose, exactly like artworks. Their meanings exist only in specific context.

Steps For Analyzing An Unreliable Narrative In Toni Morrison's Home (2012), Song Namgung

International Programs

This poster provides the steps that the reader of Toni Morrison's novel needs to follow in order to cope with the unreliable narrative of Frank Money in Home(2012). Morrison discloses violence inside and outside America through the lens of Frank's first person narration. Under his self-rationalization, his desire to be part of America is buried and he confirms his superiority by marginalizing the Korean girl who is his victim.

El Peligro De Contar Historias: Un Análisis De Tu Rostro Mañana, De Javier Marías, Madison Morgan

Senior Honors Projects, 2020-current

Journey Into The Self: Essays On Biculturalism, Heidi Moe Graviet Aug 2020

Journey Into The Self: Essays On Biculturalism, Heidi Moe Graviet

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis examines what it means to exist as a bicultural being and how one approaches creating and negotiating a multicultural identity in terms of names, war, religion, belonging, and loss. In Narrow Road to the Interior, Matsuo Bashō embarks upon a journey of transcendence and self-discovery into the interior regions of Japan. In doing so, he establishes a Japanese writing tradition that centers around introspective journey-taking and writing oneself into truth and being. This thesis examines, participates in, and expands upon this writing tradition as it follows one Japanese American woman’s attempts to selfhood. Ultimately, it proposes the idea …

The Fatale Monstrum And The Nasty Woman: Gendered Political Representations Of Cleopatra Vii And Hillary Rodham Clinton, Emma Baker Aug 2020

The Fatale Monstrum And The Nasty Woman: Gendered Political Representations Of Cleopatra Vii And Hillary Rodham Clinton, Emma Baker

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis examines the use of gender expectations in representations of two historically significant and politically powerful women: Cleopatra VII and Hillary Rodham Clinton. Though their situations were in some ways quite different, each of these women crafted her public image carefully, using both masculine and feminine gender expectations to represent herself as a powerful, capable leader and as a strong, caring mother. Their political enemies similarly drew on both masculine and feminine gender norms in order to represent these women both as dangerous, emasculating, monstrous figures who had to be conquered and as weak and incapable of leadership. The …

The Collaborators Draw The Circle, Gary K. Lengel Aug 2020

The Collaborators Draw The Circle, Gary K. Lengel

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The mystical appeal of a circle reverberates throughout the practice of theatre: from the story circles of our ancestors echoing through the caves and across the ancient savannahs to the modern-day arena palaces that allow playwrights, directors, actors, producers, designers, craftspeople, and, ultimately audiences, to engage and embrace our retold truths, we face each other in circles. This writing references academic instruction and professional experiences in live theatre, documenting various appearances of the circle metaphor as the rehearsal core drives through the production process. It is an endorsement of the circle’s power to the initial table read and beyond: this …

Social Power Of Jazz Festivals, Olga Bekenshtein Aug 2020

Social Power Of Jazz Festivals, Olga Bekenshtein

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Jazz festivals occur in all parts of the world, small cities and metropolises, urban and rural landscapes, stadiums, churches, streets, and abandoned factories. Being a part of the entertainment industry, they have the potential to impact social change. Jazz festivals help us reconsider notions of identity and community, and their communal experience has the potential to undermine dominant social norms. The industry of jazz festivals is based on Black music and has a history of positive and negative social outcomes. Evaluating festivals through the symbolic meaning of music provides an optic into how festivals marginalize and exploit African American cultural …
