The Tale Of The Old Forest: The Damaging Effects Of Forestry In J. R. R. Tolkien’S Written Works, Katrine L. A. Hjulstad
The Tale Of The Old Forest: The Damaging Effects Of Forestry In J. R. R. Tolkien’S Written Works, Katrine L. A. Hjulstad
Journal of Tolkien Research
The Old Forest is more often than not considered a wholly villainous woodland, and yet in a letter to the Daily Telegraph (1972), J. R. R. Tolkien claimed that he ‘take[s] the part of trees’ in all his works. Verlyn Flieger takes issue with this claim in her essay ‘Taking the Part of Trees’, as it seems to suggest that Tolkien’s Hobbits in the Old Forest were no better than the Orcs in Fangorn. Here it is argued that Flieger’s interpretation forgets that Tolkien intended The Lord of the Rings to appear as the Hobbits’ writings and recollections, and shows …

Expressive Arts, Social Circus, And Community Music Therapy: A Literature Review, Tyler Sabourin
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
This capstone thesis explores the broad ways in which the expressive arts therapies can be applied with a community focus. Particular attention is paid to the community-centered goals and the role of performance in social circus as they relate to the current practice and goals of community music therapy. Through an exploration of social circus models, the connection between social circus and therapeutic theater is described, and emerging literature that links the two is analyzed. The field of community music therapy is explored, as are its theoretical similarities to social circus. The current limitations on research of mixed-modality practices which …

The Distinction Problem Of Self-Deception, Chi Yin Chan
The Distinction Problem Of Self-Deception, Chi Yin Chan
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
The essential task of the investigation of self-deception is nothing more than establishing the boundary of it, herein known as the distinction problem of self-deception. Such a boundary is necessary for distinguishing the phenomenon of self-deception from other similar phenomena, especially wishful thinking, and sheds light on the future research of other theoretical questions posed by the phenomenon. Although philosophers have reached a vague consensus on certain necessary elements involved in the phenomenon of self-deception, there is no general agreement on their details, leading to a lack of canonical literature regarding the question of what makes self-deception a unique phenomenon. …

Wakanda Dream Lab and PolicyLink present a storyworld of safety and freedom in a future without prisons and policing.
While debates about “defunding” raise the question of what a new public safety system might look like, authors and artists are showing us what is possible through speculative fiction. In the spirit of visionary fiction, we convened future-bending Black storytellers for a Black Speculative Writer's Room Project, and together, we created an anthology of freedom dream stories exploring a world after the abolition of …

Theses - ALL
This thesis is a product of my attempt to discover why I make art. The intent is not to define a specific work or body of work, but rather to explore the personal context that informs my decision-making process. The writing style and tone are as much a reflection of my artistic inclinations as are the actual topics I have chosen to address. Much of this thesis is not serious, because much of the time I am not a serious person. A portion of this thesis is quite serious, and I hereby formally apologize for that fact.

Imaging Of Our Ancestors Written By Italo Calvino Through Illustrations And An Animation, Wenpei Li
Theses - ALL
The aim of this thesis is to combine my artwork with literature. The first part of the thesis is an examination of Italo Calvino’s role in 20th-century literature, Our Ancestor. The second section of the thesis explains my evolution as a creative artist. I made an animation called Drifting of A Leaf.
From 1952 to 1957, Italo Calvino published three novels: The Cloven Viscount (1952), The Baron in the Trees (1957), and The Nonexistent Knight (1959). I want to show how an illustrator thinking about this book. It is a series of 8 pieces of illustrations. In this illustration part, …

In my digital painting, Mount Culling, 2019, a mound of objects sits on a pile of white rocks that protrudes from a watery plane. The surface of the plane stretches back to the horizon. The head of a bull in the center, a broken-down van with its rear end ripped off sits as if crashed on the rocks. A man’s head, eyes closed in restful repose is large and sculpture like, making the other objects seem like toys. The head is an industrial hue of orange-yellow on the edge of the rocks half sunk into a black and oil slick, …
Copulas In Korean And Japanese, -I And -Da: Grammatical Categorization And Comparison On The Basis Of Morphosyntactic And Syntactic Analyses, Soyoung Kim
Theses - ALL
The behavior of the copula varies by language, and it is often considered as an arbitrary element that is language-specific. While Korean and Japanese copular constructions share many characteristics, the differences between the two languages confirms the language-specific characteristic of the copula. Through examinations and anlayses of the morphosyntactic behaviors of the copulas in Korean and Japanese such as suffixation of tense morphemes, mood morphemes, and morphological derivation/contraction, the differences and similarities between Korean and Japanese copulas are highlighted, thereby contributing to the definition and the language-specific features and parametrization of the copulas in the two languages. This thesis claims …
The Haudenosaunee Legend Of The Three Sisters As A Children’S Picture Book, Jill Ann Long
The Haudenosaunee Legend Of The Three Sisters As A Children’S Picture Book, Jill Ann Long
Theses - ALL
This thesis aims to explain the importance of illustrating this Native American legend in a
children’s book. The Three Sisters is a timeless indigenous legend orally passed down from generation to generation over centuries in many different versions. The legend teaches many lessons: caring for the community as a large family, awareness of the sustainability of resources as a way of life, respecting the land in which they live, and living in harmony with the earth. My inspirations for this picture book are my family influences and childhood experiences with my extended family among the Haudenosaunee people. The thesis will …

On a daily basis, as individuals retire, they often reevaluate their housing needs as they search for opportunities to accommodate their new lifestyle. At the same time, the idea of doing more-with-less is becoming increasingly popular. Existing literature shows that tiny homes have been found to address the needs of a wide range of individuals. They also alleviate excessive construction costs and address the problem of mortgage /debt management. However, the current literature also shows there is a gap in that a large percentage of tiny houses have not yet been designed to meet the needs of an aging population. …

In this interview, Dale McCormick discusses her early life in New York City and in Iowa City. She describes a college era lesbian relationship that, when discovered by her mother, led to several years of failed psychiatric conversion therapy. McCormick describes the vibrant second-wave feminist community in Iowa City of the 1960s and 1970s and the role anti-(Vietnam)war activism played in her life. She discusses in detail the process of becoming a union carpenter apprentice and the harassment she faced as the only woman on construction crews. With the publication of her book “Against the Grain, a Carpentry Manual for …

Urban Warfare: Emerging Geopolitical Conundrum, Bert Chapman
Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations
Urban warfare is as old as human history. It is becoming increasingly important in international political and military planning due to increasing global urbanization and the presence of megacities (urban areas with populations exceeding 10 million) in many global regions and being in areas of recent and potential military conflict. 2018 World Bank data notes that approximately 56% of the world's population lives in urban areas which is up from 34% in 1960. Many of these megacities, including New York City, Los Angeles, Sao Paulo, Mumbai, Shanghai, and Manila are adjacent to oceanic waters and vulnerable to trade and supply …
