Postmodern Violent Conditions In Loher's Innocence, Peter Yang
Postmodern Violent Conditions In Loher's Innocence, Peter Yang
Faculty Scholarship
Despite its theatrical success, Dea Loher's Innocence faces a heated debate among German theatre and literary critics. Some regard it as a neorealist drama that has reached the highest level of the theatre, but others denounce it as a diffuse, kitschy portrayal of violence. The goal of this paper is to explore themes of the play to negotiate—against the claims of its existing theatre and literary criticism—more accurate critical guidelines of evaluating this theatrical work. The results of this study are expected to contribute to a better understanding of postmodernism and postdramatic theatre in general and of this postdramatic writing …

This eclectic monograph investigates corporealities across diverse arts practices – dance, music, fashion, visual and performance art. The six chapters resulted from a multidisciplinary seminar series at LASALLE College of the Arts, a tertiary arts institution in Singapore – the unifying themes were the body, embodied performativity and multidisciplinarity. This research series on what initially appear to be disparate titles was curated to facilitate dialogues about the notion of the body as central to all creative practice, with an objective to enable and enhance inter-disciplinary relationships and pedagogy.

On a cold Thursday in early February 1920, newly enfranchised women from across the nation huddled together in Chicago for a seven-day-long Golden Jubilee. The anticipated passage of the Nineteenth Amendment needed only three more states for ratification, which occurred a few months later. At the same time, women in Utah reflected back half a century to February 12, 1870, when Utah Territory granted women the right to vote. Female Utahns rejoiced with their sisters throughout the United States who anticipated the fruition of universal suffrage. Susa Young Gates, who attended the National American Woman’s Suffrage Association Convention in Chicago, …

God's surprises might be perplexing, but they are always life-changing.

Assessing The Impact Of Green Roof On The Building Performance A Case Study Of Outpatient Pediatric Clinics In Lebanon, Louay Ghezzawi, Hiba Mohsen
Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)
Several studies have proved that incorporating the use of green roofs can optimize overall building performance and increase the building’s energy efficiency. This review targets different scenarios of green roof as a solution in addition to studying its various types and their effect in order to better optimize the results. With a structured analysis and cohesive interpretations through simulations and analytical cooling design extracted from EnergyPlus modeler, findings were assessed, and a conclusion was set to choose the best scenario. In addition to, other parameters that were taken into consideration which specifies the level of the green roof covered area …
Role Of Artificial Lighting In Emphasizing The Entrance Approaches, Maged Youssef
Role Of Artificial Lighting In Emphasizing The Entrance Approaches, Maged Youssef
Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)
Building's entrance is metaphorically a threshold between two realms, the first is an outdoor exposed to climatic change, hazards, and environmental factors, while the second is controlled, monitored, and determined to certain functions. It plays an important role in enriching users' experience. Moreover, it is the first impression a visitor takes to evaluate a whole building. Architecturally, the entrance is a very special part in the elevation, distinguished and emphasized by different design approaches. One of these approaches is using lighting. There is a direct connection between recognition of a space and light assimilation in it. From sunset to dawn, …

Indian Boarding School History: An Analysis Of Two Letters From The Perris Indian School, Erica Maien Ward
History in the Making
This paper is not meant to be the traditional research paper. It is a brief look into the documents researchers find and analysis while researching on a topic. The documents provide a view into the people and policies of that time period. The two letters that will be analyzed later in this paper are examples of Indian boarding schools’ policies that had direct effect on the lives of the students and their families.1 In the turn of the twentieth century, Indian boarding schools were still operating on the premise of assimilation of the American Indian into the "white culture." Hopefully, …

Memorializing Conflict And Controversy: A Look Into The Kent State Memorials, Heather Johnson
History in the Making
May 4, 1970, marks a day in American history when the protests of the Vietnam War and the government of the United States erupted in violence. It was on this date that Ohio State National Guardsmen fired into a crowd of unarmed student protestors on the campus of Kent State University. In the span of thirteen seconds, nine students were wounded and four lay dead. The shootings sent waves of emotion throughout the country. In the decades following the May 4th shootings, a series of memorials have been created in remembrance of the tragedy. Through the use of oral histories, …
The Trokosi Tradition In Ghana: The Silencing Of A Religion, Rhonda Martinez
The Trokosi Tradition In Ghana: The Silencing Of A Religion, Rhonda Martinez
History in the Making
When does tradition and religion infringe upon human rights and who has the right to impose restrictions on them? Slavery is still an ongoing phenomenon that should no longer be denied. Trokosi, still being practiced today, is a relatively unknown African religion in which young girls are sexually enslaved to pay for crimes committed by their families. This paper highlights the terrible tradition of trokosi in order to bring public awareness to its three-hundred-year practice. Through the examination of a variety of secondary sources, definitions of slavery and explanations of the trokosi traditions are first established. Next, debates for and …
Rape Regiment: Sexual Violence Against Women During War, Andrea Roskam
Rape Regiment: Sexual Violence Against Women During War, Andrea Roskam
History in the Making
Despite the extensive research on World War II, little is known about a system created by the Japanese government in which women were forced into sexual slavery. This system, known as the Comfort Woman System, enabled soldiers to systematically and heinously rape young women for the sole purpose of self-satisfaction and as a reward for their military efforts as a man in combat. This study uncovers some of the brutality for a mature audience through an analysis of credible data, photographic evidence and an extensive look into the oral histories of former Comfort Women. These firsthand accounts give the women’s …

Abortion In Islamic Law And Its Intersection With Human Rights, Andini Naulina Rahajeng
Journal of Islamic Law Studies

Gender Identity And Pronoun Usage In Standardized Patient Encounters, Martha M. Popescu, Emily J. Noonan, Laura A. Weingartner
Gender Identity And Pronoun Usage In Standardized Patient Encounters, Martha M. Popescu, Emily J. Noonan, Laura A. Weingartner
Undergraduate Research Events
The standardized documentation clinicians use to record evaluations of a patient are called Subjective, Objective, Assessment, and Plan (SOAP) notes. Consistent pronoun documentation and usage in these notes is especially important for affirming transgender and gender non-conforming patients as this population experiences significant health disparities linked to medical mistrust. A sample of SOAP notes (n=286) was taken from standardized patient encounters at the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 2017 (n=137) and 2018 (n=149). There were five case iterations of the standardized patient based on gender identity. The notes were coded using the software Dedoose for the following themes: …

Skeptical Buddhism As Provenance And Project, James Mark Shields
Skeptical Buddhism As Provenance And Project, James Mark Shields
Faculty Contributions to Books
The past century and a half has seen various attempts in both Asia and the West to reform or re-conceptualize Buddhism by adding a simple, often provocative, qualifier. This paper examines some of the links between “secular,” “critical,” “sceptical,” and “radical” Buddhism in order to ascertain possibilities in thinking Buddhism anew as a 21st-century “project” with philosophical, ethical, and political resonance. In particular, I am motivated by the question of whether “sceptical” Buddhism can coexist with Buddhist praxis, conceived as an engaged response to the suffering of sentient beings in a globalized and neoliberal industrial capitalist world order. Let …

Plutarch's Themistocles: The Serpent Of Hellas, Jennifer Finn
History Faculty Research and Publications
In Plutarch’s Themistocles, the general and expatriate is thrice referenced using snake imagery. This article argues that Plutarch deliberately uses snake motifs at loaded points in the narrative to express the transformations of the general’s image in Athenian social memory, and to direct his reader towards a certain interpretation of the general’s legacy. In the centuries between the Persian Wars and the composition of Plutarch’s Lives, Themistocles had been variously represented in Athenian memory as both a patriot and a traitor, often with reference to serpentine imagery that may have been initially propagated by the general himself. An analysis of …
