Truly, Madly, Deeply: Adverbs And Ells, Kristin Lems Oct 2020

Truly, Madly, Deeply: Adverbs And Ells, Kristin Lems

Faculty Publications

In this issue’s column focusing on adverbs and English language learners, columnist Kristin Lems explores some of the basic but not-so-obvious features about adverbs that readers and writers need to learn in order to take advantage of these powerful levers of language. The odds are very good that your native English speakers will also benefit from this information—and you might learn a thing or two as well.

Against Eating Humanely-Raised Meat: Revisiting Fred’S Basement, Jonathan Spelman Oct 2020

Against Eating Humanely-Raised Meat: Revisiting Fred’S Basement, Jonathan Spelman

Philosophy and Religion Faculty Scholarship

In “Puppies, Pigs, and People: Eating Meat and Marginal Cases,” Alastair Norcross uses a thought experiment he calls “Fred’s Basement” to argue that consuming factory-farmed meat is morally equivalent to torturing and killing puppies to enjoy the taste of chocolate. Thus, he concludes that consuming factory-farmed meat is morally wrong. Although Norcross leaves open the possibility that consuming humanely-raised meat is permissible, I contend that his basic argumentative approach rules it out. In this paper, then, I extend Norcross’ thought experiment in hopes of convincing readers that consuming humanely-raised meat is morally wrong.

Black Lives Matter, Armando Delgado Oct 2020

Black Lives Matter, Armando Delgado

English Department: Research for Change - Wicked Problems in Our World

The Black Lives Matter movement first started in 2013 by three strong African Americans women: Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors and Opal Tometi. The movement was created after black lives were being taken by police officers in shootings that could have been deescalated. The research project introduces on how the movement was started and the goal is for the readers to understand why the people are so angry, the reasons they are protesting and to fight for equality around the United States. Since this is still an accruing issue, I tried to get all the info I could get in as …

Handel’S Messiah: Stepping Stones Between Now And Then, Ariela Policastro, Emma Boze, Nathan Maras Oct 2020

Handel’S Messiah: Stepping Stones Between Now And Then, Ariela Policastro, Emma Boze, Nathan Maras

2020 Festschrift: Georg Frideric Handel's "Messiah"

Original style and intent of period music can often be lost as modern performers attempt to recreate a centuries-old composition. In this paper Messiah by George Frideric Handel is discussed, offering insight in how to perform this piece while still honoring the full integrity of what the composer intended. Through an examination of past and current performances and opinions, it becomes clear that there are many distinct differences in ways this oratorio has been performed including stylistic choices, instrumentation, religious affiliation, and more.
