Mikhalevich & Powell (2020) argue for considering the welfare of invertebrates, especially insects, by asking whether invertebrates have the cognitive and neural characteristics necessary for sentience. This approach assumes that human neural and cognitive complexity is the basis of sentience. But insight might also be gained by turning this approach on its head and examining the notion that sentience may be a fundamental biological property, appearing very early in the evolution of life in all organisms with centralized nervous systems.

We ask how to assess different species for their ability to fulfill the criteria, which criteria are most important, how we quantify them (absolute or on a continuum), and how non-animals such as fungi and plants fit into this paradigm.

In North America, across the political spectrum, we have a strong tendency to reduce religion to nothing more than a tool to promote our own socio-political views. Tis is a natural consequence of our hyper-polarized culture and our impoverished view of “religion.” It is also, however, a problem—particularly for those inspired by the call to renewal through an integration of the quest for social justice and the pursuit of the spiritual life. To date, the two most important—Certainly the most influential—visual illustrators of the Book of Mormon have been Arnold Friberg and Minerva Teichert. The distance between the ways they render the text into art is real and telling. As Paul Gutjahr notes, "Friberg's most dominant figures are unfailingly men, and almost all of them could have stepped out of the pages of a superhero comic book. By contrast, Teichert "stands out among Mormon artists because of her firm commitment to bringing forward the female elements of the book, carefully evoking the story's feminine side." The Timpanogos Indians--the original inhabitants of Utah Valley--lived in villages along the Timpanogos (Provo) River and the shores of Timpanogos (Utah) Lake. But they regularly climbed the nearby bench--a large delta shaped by ancient wave action as Lake Bonneville began to drain. Although the rocky sagebrush-covered bench was not suitable for cultivation since it had no natural streams, the Timpanogos went there to find crickets and rodents or to hunt the antelope, deer, elk, and bison that grazed freely throughout the foothills, benches, and floors of the valley.

Dominic’s Oregon Ducks hat caught my eye as I entered his classroom. Although Autzen Stadium was more than 800 miles away, the Ducks were on the cusp of college football greatness and this kid knew it. He looked like a football player and, as we talked, football topped the list of things he loved—followed by wrestling, long boarding, biking, and the outdoors. Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints speak of covenants in general, baptismal covenants, temple covenants, the new and everlasting covenant, the Abrahamic covenant, and the Mosaic or Sinai covenant. But what are these covenants, and how are they related to each other? Students in many settings experience confusion about these questions. Each book of scripture shares aspects of covenants that students may not understand as well as they could. Greater clarity will allow them to draw more power from scriptural and current prophetic teachings about the centrality of the covenant in every dispensation.

We describe the development of web-based software that facilitates large-scale, crowdsourced image extraction and annotation within image-heavy corpora that are of interest to the digital humanities. An application of this software is then detailed and evaluated through a case study where it was deployed within Amazon Mechanical Turk to extract and annotate faces from the archives of Time magazine. Annotation labels included categories such as age, gender, and race that were subsequently used to train machine learning models. ประเด็นเรื่องผู้เรียนอาชีวศึกษาได้รับการกล่าวถึงในสังคมไทยมาเป็นเวลานาน เนื่องจากมีความสำคัญต่อการพัฒนาประเทศและตลาดแรงงานต้องการกำลังคนอาชีวศึกษาจำนวนมาก แต่คนในสังคมส่วนใหญ่มักมีอคติและมองผู้เรียนอาชีวศึกษาในลักษณะเหมารวมในด้านลบ งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาภาพตัวแทนผู้เรียนอาชีวศึกษาที่ประกอบสร้างผ่านภาษาในวาทกรรมสื่อมวลชนและวาทกรรมสื่อภาครัฐ ได้แก่ หนังสือพิมพ์รายวัน รายการโทรทัศน์ และข่าวประชาสัมพันธ์ทางเว็บไซต์ของหน่วยงานภาครัฐ เก็บข้อมูลระหว่างปี พ.ศ. 2555-2561 โดยศึกษาตามแนววาทกรรมวิเคราะห์เชิงวิพากษ์ ผลการวิเคราะห์ตัวบทพบว่า ภาพตัวแทนด้านลบที่ปรากฏในวาทกรรมทั้งสองกลุ่ม ได้แก่ ผู้เรียนอาชีวศึกษาเป็นบุคคลอันตรายที่มีพฤติกรรมเป็นนักเลงอันธพาล ผู้เรียนอาชีวศึกษาเป็นปัญหาสังคมที่ยากจะแก้ไข และผู้เรียนอาชีวศึกษาไม่เกรงกลัวกฎหมาย ภาพตัวแทนด้านบวก ได้แก่ ผู้เรียนอาชีวศึกษามีทักษะฝีมือ ผู้เรียนอาชีวศึกษาสำคัญต่อการพัฒนาประเทศ ผู้เรียนอาชีวศึกษาได้รับการสนับสนุนจากภาครัฐและหน่วยงานที่เกี่ยวข้อง ผู้เรียนอาชีวศึกษามีน้ำใจ และผู้เรียนอาชีวศึกษามีความมั่นคงก้าวหน้า ภาพตัวแทนทั้งหมดสื่อผ่านกลวิธีทางภาษา 8 กลวิธี ได้แก่ การเลือกใช้คำศัพท์ การใช้อุปลักษณ์ การใช้สหบท การใช้ทัศนภาวะ การใช้มูลบท การปฏิเสธมูลบท การเชื่อมโยงข้อความบอกความขัดแย้ง และการใช้คำถามเชิงวาทศิลป์ เมื่อพิจารณาเชิงปริมาณพบว่า ในวาทกรรมสื่อมวลชนเนื้อหาหน้าหนึ่งของหนังสือพิมพ์เน้นการนำเสนอภาพด้านลบมากกว่าด้านบวก ขณะที่เนื้อหาหน้าในเน้นการนำเสนอภาพด้านบวกมากกว่าด้านลบ ส่วนวาทกรรมสื่อภาครัฐทั้งรายการโทรทัศน์และข่าวประชาสัมพันธ์ทางเว็บไซต์เน้นการนำเสนอภาพด้านบวกมากกว่าด้านลบ เมื่อพิจารณาเชิงคุณภาพพบว่า ภาพตัวแทนด้านลบมักนำเสนอโดยใช้กลวิธีทางภาษาเพื่อเน้นย้ำแง่มุมด้านลบให้โดดเด่น และบางครั้งมีการนำเสนอในลักษณะ “เหมารวม” ส่วนการนำเสนอภาพตัวแทนด้านบวกบางส่วนกลับมีการสะท้อนมุมมองด้านลบต่อผู้เรียนอาชีวศึกษา ผลการวิเคราะห์วิถีปฏิบัติทางวาทกรรมพบว่า วัตถุประสงค์ของผู้ผลิตตัวบท พื้นที่หรือช่องทางการนำเสนอ ตลอดจนกลุ่มผู้รับสาร ในวาทกรรมสื่อมวลชนและวาทกรรมสื่อภาครัฐ มีส่วนสำคัญต่อการประกอบสร้างและนำเสนอภาพตัวแทนผู้เรียนอาชีวศึกษา ตลอดจนส่งผลต่อการรับรู้ภาพตัวแทนผู้เรียนอาชีวศึกษาของคนในสังคม ที่สำคัญคือภาพตัวแทนด้านลบมักนำเสนอในพื้นที่ที่ผู้อ่านสามารถเข้าถึงได้ง่ายกว่าและมักจะได้รับความสนใจมากกว่าภาพตัวแทนด้านบวก ผลการวิเคราะห์วิถีปฏิบัติทางสังคมวัฒนธรรมพบว่า ปัจจัยทางสังคมที่มีอิทธิพลต่อการผลิตตัวบท ได้แก่ สถานการณ์ด้านการอาชีวศึกษาในสังคมไทย กฎหมายและนโยบายเกี่ยวกับการอาชีวศึกษา แนวคิดที่มีในสังคมวัฒนธรรมไทย ได้แก่ แนวคิดเรื่องการเป็นเจ้าคนนายคน ค่านิยมที่มีต่อการเรียนสายสามัญและปริญญาบัตร บทบาทของผู้เรียนอาชีวศึกษาในเหตุการณ์สำคัญ กล่าวโดยสรุป ผลการศึกษานี้เผยให้เห็นว่าภาพตัวแทนผู้เรียนอาชีวศึกษาในวาทกรรมสื่อมวลชนและวาทกรรมสื่อภาครัฐถูกคัดเลือกบางด้านมานำเสนอให้โดดเด่นตามวัตถุประสงค์ของผู้ผลิตวาทกรรม ความตระหนักรู้ดังกล่าวน่าจะนำไปสู่การรับสารอย่างมีวิจารณญาณและการนำเสนอข่าวอย่างรอบด้านปราศจากการแฝงอคติ ซึ่งน่าจะมีส่วนช่วยส่งเสริมการอาชีวศึกษาให้ประสบความสำเร็จตามเป้าหมาย

กิบส์ (Gibbs, 1994) และโคเวคเซส (KÖvecses, 2002, 2010) กล่าวไว้ว่า ไม่ใช่เพียงแค่ถ้อยคำอุปลักษณ์ที่ใช้ในการสนทนาในชีวิตประจำวันเท่านั้นที่สะท้อนมโนทัศน์ของผู้ใช้ภาษาได้ ถ้อยคำอุปลักษณ์ที่มีลักษณะสร้างสรรค์จากแหล่งอื่นๆ เช่น นวนิยาย บทกวี ก็สามารถสะท้อนมโนอุปลักษณ์ (conceptual metaphor) ของผู้ใช้ภาษาในสังคมได้เช่นกัน วิทยานิพนธ์นี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อวิเคราะห์มโนอุปลักษณ์เพศชาย เพศหญิง และเพศทางเลือก และวิเคราะห์ทัศนคติเกี่ยวกับเพศชาย เพศหญิง และเพศทางเลือกที่สะท้อนผ่านถ้อยคำอุปลักษณ์ในบทละครโทรทัศน์และเพลงไทยสากล ข้อมูลที่ใช้ในการวิจัยได้แก่ บทละครโทรทัศน์จำนวน 45 เรื่อง และเพลงไทยสากลจำนวน 1,002 เพลงซึ่งเผยแพร่ระหว่างเดือนมกราคม 2558 ถึงเดือนธันวาคม 2560 ผลการวิจัยพบว่า จากจำนวนถ้อยคำอุปลักษณ์ที่พบทั้งสิ้น 5,736 ถ้อยคำ แบ่งเป็นถ้อยคำอุปลักษณ์เพศชาย 2,474 ถ้อยคำ สะท้อนมโนอุปลักษณ์เพศชาย 5 ลำดับแรกที่มีความถี่สูงสุดได้แก่ [เพศชาย คือ สิ่งของในครอบครอง] [เพศชาย คือ สัตว์] [เพศชาย คือ สิ่งสกปรก/ สิ่งปฏิกูล] [เพศชาย คือ สินค้า] [เพศชาย คือ ตัวละคร] ถ้อยคำอุปลักษณ์เพศหญิง 3,078 ถ้อยคำ สะท้อนมโนอุปลักษณ์เพศหญิง 5 ลำดับแรกที่มีความถี่สูงสุดได้แก่ [เพศหญิง คือ สิ่งของในครอบครอง] [เพศหญิง คือ สัตว์] [เพศหญิง คือ สิ่งสกปรก/ สิ่งปฏิกูล] [เพศหญิง คือ อมนุษย์] [เพศหญิง คือ ตัวละคร] และถ้อยคำอุปลักษณ์เพศทางเลือก 184 ถ้อยคำ สะท้อนมโนอุปลักษณ์เพศทางเลือก 5 ลำดับได้แก่ [เพศทางเลือก คือ สัตว์] [เพศทางเลือก คือ สิ่งของในครอบครอง] [เพศทางเลือก คือ อาหาร] [เพศทางเลือก คือ สิ่งสกปรก/ สิ่งปฏิกูล] …

วิทยานิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษากลวิธีการสร้างอาชญนิยาย ในเรื่องชุด พุ่มรัก พานสิงห์ ของวินทร์ เลียววาริณ และวิเคราะห์การวิพากษ์สังคมในงานดังกล่าว ตัวบทที่ใช้ในการศึกษาประกอบด้วยรวมเรื่องสั้น 4 เล่ม ได้แก่ ฆาตกรรมกลางทะเล คดีผีนางตะเคียน คดีล่าคนเจ้าชู้ คดีศพล่องหน และนวนิยาย 5 เล่ม ได้แก่ ฆาตกรรมจักรราศี คดีเจ็ดแพะ คดีหนอนนิยาย คดีสามเงา และ ฆาตกรรมกุหลาบดำ จากการศึกษาพบว่าเรื่องชุด พุ่มรัก พานสิงห์ ของวินทร์ เลียววาริณ เป็นอาชญนิยายที่มีการผสมผสานการประพันธ์ 2 ประเภท ได้แก่ เรื่องสั้นและนวนิยาย รวมอยู่ใน ชุดเดียว และมีโครงเรื่องสืบสวนสอบสวน ทั้งแบบอาชญนิยายคลาสสิก และแบบนักสืบเสี่ยงภัย ที่โครงเรื่องประกอบด้วยโครงเรื่องหลักและโครงเรื่องรองที่มีความเชื่อมโยงกันอย่างสมเหตุสมผล มีการประกอบสร้างตัวละครหลักเป็นนักสืบลูกทุ่งที่มีเอกลักษณ์โดดเด่นและแปลกใหม่ เน้นการบรรยายฉากที่กระชับ ใช้กลวิธีการตั้งชื่อเรื่องที่หลากหลายและเชื่อมโยงกับคดี มีกลวิธี การสืบสวนสอบสวนที่เป็นลำดับขั้นตอนและสมจริง ตลอดจนมีการผสมผสานความขบขัน เพื่อสร้างบรรยากาศที่แตกต่างจากอาชญนิยายเรื่องอื่น ๆ กลวิธีการประกอบสร้างอาชญนิยายในเรื่องชุด พุ่มรัก พานสิงห์ นี้ยังเป็นกลวิธีที่ช่วยนำเสนอแนวคิดวิพากษ์สังคมในหลายประเด็น ไม่ว่าจะเป็นการวิพากษ์การเมืองการปกครอง การวิพากษ์ความรุนแรงในสังคม เรื่องระบบกฎหมายและกระบวนการสืบสวนสอบสวนที่ไร้ประสิทธิภาพ เรื่องความตกต่ำของศาสนาและศีลธรรม เรื่องการกีดกันกลุ่มคนชายขอบ เรื่องปัญหาความเหลื่อมล้ำ เรื่องจริยธรรมสื่อมวลชน เรื่องปัญหาสิ่งแวดล้อม และเรื่องการจำกัดสิทธิเสรีภาพในร่างกายของแต่ละบุคคล การศึกษาเรื่องการสร้างอาชญนิยายและการวิพากษ์สังคมในเรื่องชุดดังกล่าว จึงแสดงให้เห็นถึงการใช้อาชญนิยายเป็นพื้นที่ในการนำเสนอประเด็นทางสังคมได้อย่างสร้างสรรค์และแยบยล

The role played by language in our cognitive lives is a topic at the centre of contemporary debates in cognitive (neuro)science. In this paper we illustrate and compare two theories that offer embodied explanations of this role: the WAT (Words As social Tools) and the LENS (Language is an Embodied Neuroenhancement and Scaffold) theories. WAT and LENS differ from other current proposals because they connect the impact of the neurologically realized language system on our cognition to the ways in which language shapes our interaction with the physical and social environment. But novels ARE books, you might be thinking. Jordan Stein points out that this is true, but not in the way that many of us have thought to be the case. Twentieth- and twenty-first century literary history, Stein argues, has too often failed to deliver a programmatic discussion of the media history of genre. Attention to changes and continuities in the early Anglophone novel’s artifactual status within an evolving, transatlantic media ecology, supplements, and in some cases rethinks, critical understandings of the development of novelistic form. This chapter examines eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century visions of apocalypse regarding the future of black lives in the American body politic. It begins with readings of Jefferson’s fear of a black planet in Notes on the State of Virginia and Crèvecoeur’s depictions of racial terror in Letters from an American Farmer. The chapter then investigates the writing of an African American herald of the end times, Christopher MacPherson. The chapter reads the apocalyptic jeremiad of MacPherson’s pamphlet, Christ’s Millennium (1811), as a reparative response to the suppression of black voices and the annihilation of black lives.

This dissertation examines literary estrangement, that is the act and effect of making the familiar strange in a literary work, in the religious poems and sermons of the poet-preacher John Donne (1572–1631). My study uncovers and explores what Donne "estranges," how he achieves this, and for what purpose, as well as the practices and modes of thinking that shaped his poetics. In Donne's religious verse and prose, making the familiar and traditional tropes, images, doctrines, and events of Christianity strange forms active readers and revitalizes those elements, imbuing them with newfound interest, significance, and affective power.

As such, it is not surprising that the media has potential to significantly influence public perceptions (Bourke, 2013). Exploring The Relationship Between Gender, Race, And Space, And Toronto Community Housing Policy, Anita Rachel Ewan

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This dissertation presents the racial-gendered lived experiences of Black women living in Toronto Community Housing (TCH; subsidized housing). This research found that Black women and their families are disproportionately faced with challenges due to barriers caused by housing policy and procedures that also affect the overall development and wellbeing of their children. It also highlights the ways in which Black women continue to thrive and survive in the face of detrimental and derelict living conditions; accomplished through community development and support initiatives, and fostering strong communities.

Becoming Transfronterizo Collaborators: A Transdisciplinary Framework For Developing Translingual Pedagogies In Wac/Wid, Marcela Hebbard, Yanina Hernández

Given that pedagogical approaches that challenge dominant language ideologies are not yet well represented in WAC/WID scholarship, this chapter outlines a transdisciplinary framework for developing translingual pedagogies. The framework is built around the notion of transfronterizo/ a collaborators because before instructors can engage their students in exploring and challenging their views toward language, instructors must first critically interrogate their own. This interrogation must consider the unique political, social, economic, and linguistic exigencies of where an institution is located.
