Today, we are constantly using data; some even say that we live in an Age of Data. Most of us hardly realize that a Danish astronomer set the whole process in motion more than four hundred years ago. Tycho Brahe (1546-1601) changed the world with his innovative approach to astronomy and observational data. My interest in him started with a college term paper and eventually led to writing and editing books and articles about his life and work in Renaissance Denmark. It is a beautiful and solemn monument, placed in a scenic setting in the park that stretches from the small castle down to the Bay of Aarhus, with a view of Mols and Helgenaes in the distance. The common, biblical believes in an initial, single human creation, and a subsequent survival of a punishing, catastrophic flood were among the key forming pillars of the Near East monotheist religions. The other key pillar was, arguably, the belief in the existence of a one, supreme god and creator. However, neither the two stories of human creation and catastrophic flood, nor the belief in one supreme god, were originally introduced by these monotheist religions. Where an individual chooses to live informs many of their economic decisions and may be the single largest economic decision one makes in their lives. Through understanding the way that people choose their residential locations, we are able to better understand the opportunities available to them. Within the Chabad community, there is a large focus on emissary work, which calls Chabad Jews to move outside of large Jewish communities in order to help secular Jews become more religious. A semi-autoethnographic piece that uses a radical transfeminist lens to interrogate hegemonic systems of gender and race in the Dominican Republic through the violence that Trans and Gender Nonconforming people face. While focusing on trans violence, this thesis explicitly turns its gaze away from Trans/Gender Nonconforming people and interrogates the state, cisnormativity, and gender conformity. This honors thesis focuses on moments in Réjean Ducharme’s L’Avalée des avalés, L’Hiver de force et Va savoir that are indicative of historical and social questions in Quebec. These novels span a 30 year period of critical developments for Quebec. This analysis, consequently, examines the relationship between Ducharme’s universe and the world in which he lived. It argues that Ducharme’s texts indirectly respond to social questions and discourses, and moreover, that they elaborate a new vision for Quebec and its people.

In contemporary Western popular culture, humanitarian action often serves as the ultimate expression of altruism, compassion, and moral obligation. This research historicizes humanitarianism to understand the assumptions that underlie its affective appeal. Oversimplified narratives of aid work frequently fail to acknowledge the historical and geopolitical context in which this work occurs. I argue that humanitarianism, as both a discursive tool and code of practice, makes visible some legacies of the ‘civilizing mission’ – the ideology used to justify colonialism in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. While vaccination has proven to be an incredibly effective method of disease prevention, the growing ‘anti-vax’ movement threatens the population-level benefits conferred by widespread immunization. Recent findings indicate that anti-vax beliefs are not, as had been previously assumed, necessarily the result of scientific illiteracy but rather, are likely produced by intertwining social and situational contexts. With these considerations in mind, the goal of this study was to identify potential motivations underlying anti-vax behavior by performing a deep examination of anti-vax rhetoric, coupled with demographic and situational analyses. Places the naturalist Alexander Von Humboldt's proto-ecological ideas in conversation with Walt Whitman's poetry to show how the poet developed an ecopoetics in conversation with the natural sciences of his time, with specific attention to Von Humboldt's theory of the "kosmos" - by which Whitman's poetic persona self-identified. These recognitions are combined with how Whitman's idealized version of the American poet as a “kosmos” creates a political ecology in Whitman’s work, placing his ecopoetics into environmental discourses that resonate from their origin in the nineteenth century to our present ecological moment today.

Early migrants to the Americas were likely seaworthy. Many archaeologists now agree that the first humans who traveled to the Americas more than 15,000 years before present (yr BP) used a coastal North Pacific route. Their initial migration was from northeastern Asia to Beringia where they settled for thousands to more than ten thousand years. Oceanographic conditions during the Last Glacial Maximum (18,000-24,000 yr BP) would have enhanced their boat journeys along the route from Beringia to the Pacific Northwest because the influx of freshwater that drives the opposing Alaska Coastal Current was small, global sea level was at least …

สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มุ่งศึกษาขนบในการแปลชื่อภาพยนตร์บันเทิงคดีแนววิทยาศาสตร์ (Science Fiction: Sci-fi) ระหว่างช่วงพ.ศ. 2541-2555 และช่วงพ.ศ. 2556-2563 เพื่อค้นหาว่าในยุคหลังการแปลชื่อภาพยนตร์บันเทิงคดีแนววิทยาศาสตร์มีขนบการแปลอย่างไร และสาเหตุของการเปลี่ยนแปลงดังกล่าวคืออะไร นอกจากนี้ผู้วิจัยยังต้องการศึกษาว่าประเภทย่อยของภาพยนตร์นั้นจะมีผลต่อขนบในการแปลภาพยนตร์หรือไม่ โดยผู้วิจัยได้คัดเลือกชื่อภาพยนตร์ไซไฟทั้งหมดจำนวน 229 รายชื่อ และได้จำแนกประเภทย่อยของภาพยนตร์ในทั้งสองช่วงเวลาออกเป็น 5 กลุ่ม ได้แก่ ภาพยนตร์ไซไฟ-แอ็คชั่น ภาพยนตร์ไซไฟ-ระทึกขวัญ ภาพยนตร์ไซไฟ-ผจญภัย ภาพยนตร์ไซไฟ-ตลก และภาพยนตร์ไซไฟ-โรแมนติก จากการศึกษาผู้วิจัยพบว่า ในยุคหลังนั้น กลุ่มภาพยนตร์ที่มีแนวโน้มของขนบในการแปลโดยเคลื่อนเข้าหาวัฒนธรรมปลายทาง ได้แก่ กลุ่มภาพยนตร์ไซไฟ-ตลก โดยสะท้อนผ่านการใช้กลวิธีการแปลแบบตั้งชื่อใหม่ และกลุ่มภาพยนตร์ไซไฟ-โรแมนติก โดยสะท้อนผ่านการใช้กลวิธีการแปลความ ทั้งนี้การใช้กลวิธีการแปลความและการตั้งชื่อใหม่อาจทำให้ผู้ชมเข้าใจเนื้อหาสำคัญของภาพยนตร์และอาจทำให้ผู้ชมตัดสินใจรับชมภาพยนตร์ สำหรับกลุ่มภาพยนตร์ที่มีแนวโน้มของขนบในการแปลเเบบประนีประนอมระหว่างการเคลื่อนเข้าหาวัฒนธรรมต้นทางและปลายทาง ได้แก่ กลุ่มภาพยนตร์ไซไฟ-แอ็คชั่น กลุ่มภาพยนตร์ไซไฟ-ระทึกขวัญ และกลุ่มภาพยนตร์ไซไฟ-ผจญภัย โดยสะท้อนผ่านกลวิธีการแปลแบบทับศัพท์โดยการขยายความเพิ่มเติม ซึ่งการทับศัพท์เป็นการรักษาชื่อในภาษาต้นทาง และการขยายความเพิ่มเติมเป็นการสะท้อนเนื้อหาของภาพยนตร์เพื่อให้ผู้ชมเกิดความสนใจที่จะรับชมภาพยนตร์ดังกล่าว

สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มุ่งศึกษาอุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์ในตัวบทโฆษณาผลิตภัณฑ์เครื่องสำอาง รวมถึงศึกษากลวิธีการถ่ายทอดอุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์จากต้นฉบับไปยังฉบับแปล การวิจัยนี้รวบรวมข้อมูลผลิตภัณฑ์เครื่องสำอางในกลุ่มผลิตภัณฑ์บำรุงผิวและเครื่องสำอางสำหรับตกแต่งทั้งหมด 240 ผลิตภัณฑ์จากเว็บไซต์ตราสินค้าที่มีทั้งภาษาไทยและภาษาอังกฤษ ผู้วิจัยศึกษาแนวคิดอุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์ตามแนวภาษาศาสตร์ปริชานของ Lakoff และ Johnson (2003) แนวทางการระบุรูปภาษาแสดงอุปลักษณ์จากกลุ่มนักวิชาการ Pragglejaz Group (2007) และการจัดประเภทกลุ่มคำศัพท์ตามวงความหมายจากงานวิจัยเกี่ยวกับอุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์ในตัวบทประเภทต่าง ๆ รวมถึงการศึกษาลักษณะภาษาโฆษณาและประเภทอุปลักษณ์ที่พบในโฆษณาเครื่องสำอางในภาษาอังกฤษและภาษาไทย และจากการศึกษาแนวทางการแปลอุปลักษณ์ตามแนวคิดแบบดั้งเดิมและตามแนวภาษาศาสตร์ปริชาน ผู้วิจัยได้เลือกใช้กรอบการวิเคราะห์กลวิธีการแปลที่ผสมผสานกันของ Deignan et al. (1997) Schäffner (2004) และ Toury (1995) ผลการวิจัยพบว่า ในตัวบทโฆษณาเครื่องสำอางภาษาอังกฤษที่คัดเลือกมามีอุปลักษณ์ทั้งหมด 29 ประเภท มีจำนวนรูปภาษาที่แสดงอุปลักษณ์ทั้งหมด 1,391 ตัวอย่าง ผู้วิจัยเลือกอุปลักษณ์ที่พบสูงสุดใน 10 อันดับแรก ได้แก่ อุปลักษณ์สงคราม แสง มนุษย์ สุขภาพ พืชและการเพาะปลูก สิ่งทอและเครื่องนุ่งห่ม เครื่องจักร ศิลปะ อาหารและโภชนาการ และภาชนะ ซึ่งจำนวนรูปภาษาที่แสดงอุปลักษณ์ทั้งหมด 1,166 ตัวอย่าง นำมาวิเคราะห์อุปลักษณ์ที่พบในฉบับแปลและกลวิธีการแปล พบว่าภาษาไทยและภาษาอังกฤษมีอุปลักษณ์ทั้งหมดนี้เหมือนกัน ผลการวิเคราะห์กลวิธีการแปลเป็นไปตามสมมติฐานที่ตั้งไว้ กล่าวคือ พบว่ากลวิธีการแปลที่พบมากที่สุดคือ 1) การแปลโดยรักษามโนทัศน์เดิม แต่รูปภาษาแสดงอุปลักษณ์ต่างจากต้นฉบับ ร้อยละ 51.41 ตามด้วย 2) การแปลโดยรักษามโนทัศน์เดิม และรูปภาษาแสดงอุปลักษณ์ตรงตามต้นฉบับ ร้อยละ 26.90 3) การแปลโดยไม่รักษามโนทัศน์ (ไม่มีรูปภาษาแสดงอุปลักษณ์) ร้อยละ 12.93 4) การแปลโดยใช้มโนทัศน์ที่แตกต่างกัน ร้อยละ 4.62 และ 5) การละไม่แปล ร้อยละ 4.11 นอกจากนี้ ยังพบว่ามีการเพิ่มมโนทัศน์ที่ไม่ปรากฏในต้นฉบับเข้ามาในฉบับแปลด้วย โดยสรุป การถ่ายทอดอุปลักษณ์เชิง มโนทัศน์ในตัวบทโฆษณาเครื่องสำอางจากภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาไทแทบไม่พบปัญหาในการแปลที่มาจากปัจจัยทางวัฒนธรรมซึ่งอาจเป็นเพราะวัฒนธรรมปลายทางรับค่านิยมและวัฒนธรรมจากต่างชาติโดยเฉพาะเรื่องความงามมาอย่างยาวนาน จึงสามารถรักษามโนทัศน์เดิมในต้นฉบับได้เป็นส่วนใหญ่ ส่วนกลวิธีการแปลอื่น ๆ แสดงให้เห็นการปรับบทแปลในตัวบทโฆษณาเครื่องสำอาง

Persistence Of African American Students At Predominately White Institutions, Candace Thompson

Using qualitative methodology, the persistence of African American students at predominately White institutions was analyzed. This was conducted through semi-structured interviews by six participants which evaluated African American students’ overall persistence. Participants expressed what determined their selections of institutions as well as what institutional and personal factors negatively and positively affected their matriculation throughout the institution. In addition, the study provided recommendations to student affairs professionals to better serve this population.

The purpose of this qualitative action research study was to examine and identify the listening preferences and musical identity of high school members of performing ensembles. Participants were involved in five stages of data collection; the initial questionnaire, the first listening journal, a feedback questionnaire, the second listening journal, and individual interviews. Adapting fairy tales and folklore has been an ongoing endeavor by storytellers and artists since the very first story was repeated. The evidence can be seen in the many versions of fairy tales like those of the sleeping beauty, from Giambattista Basile’s “Sun, Moon, and Talia” to Walt Disney’s Maleficent. However, unlike their European counterparts, adaptations of American tales outside of children’s literature are not as ubiquitous. My writing rectifies this by adding to the resurging interest as seen in recent retellings like Matt Bell’s Appleseed: The Monstrous Birth (2019).

Religiosity is a well-known protective factor for mental health as a coping and resilience source, which positively affects Black male college students' academic success. However, less is known about whether religiosity predicts degree completion and buffers Black males' mental health from a quantitative research approach. Black males have one of the lowest degree completion rates at four-year institutions. Students who experience poor mental health outcomes have lower degree completion. This study utilized logistic regression to investigate whether religiosity: (1) predicted degree completion among Black male undergraduate students and (2) moderated anxiety and depression.
