Niklaus Leuenberger: Predating Gandhi In 1653?, Hans Leuenberger

Swiss American Historical Society Review

The 1653 Peasant War can be subdivided in the following phases:

The beginning of the rebellion in the Entlebuch Valley, Canton

Lucerne. The massive popular revolt under the leadership of Niklaus

Leuenberger, chairman of the “League of Huttwil,” as of the

signing of the Oath of Huttwil [Bundesbrief] with the aim

of a renewal of the Oath of Rütli of 1291 [author’s remark],

through to the conclusion of the Murifeld Peace Treaty.

A History Of The Swiss In California, Richard Hacken

Swiss American Historical Society Review

In 1848, the same year that Switzerland’s political structure

took on its present constitutional form as a modern nation-state, a Swiss

settler-entrepreneur named John Sutter became aware of gold deposits

at his mill in Alta California. This led directly to the California Gold

Rush. Two years later, in 1850, the United States accepted the freshly

acquired and promising region now known as “California” into the

Union as a state. Swiss immigrants enhanced the development of California

from its very inception.

Kpom! Kpom! Kpom!: The familiar majestic sound that my mother’s grand wooden mortar and pestle communicate to each other. They recognize their status as the most important utensils in her Nigerian kitchen and chatter away oblivious to the red splatter of scotch bonnet peppers between them. I hold the pestle timidly, but tightly in my hands. My ten-year-old biceps cannot understand the synchrony between the pestle and the mortar. The gliding yet forceful motion only evokes a sense of inferiority in me. Together, they have a mind of their own and work so majestically. I am but a spectator. My …

Mythic Background, Erwin F. Cook Jan 2020

Mythic Background, Erwin F. Cook

Classical Studies Faculty Research

Myth, according to a well known formulation by Walter Burkert, “is a traditional tale with secondary, partial reference to something of collective importance” (1979: 23). Andrew von Hendy, who declares Burkert’s definition the “gold standard” in classical studies, offers a Marxist reformulation, so that myth “is traditional narrative with a high degree of ideological saturation” (2002: 269, 277). This definition accords with the fact that muthos, the Greek word that most closely approximates myth, also designates “story” generally, and, as we might expect in an oral culture, “speech” (its meaning of “fiction” is post-Homeric). It also allows …

John Leamy's Atlantic Worlds: Trade, Religion, And Imperial Transformations In The Spanish Empire And Early Republican Philadelphia, Linda K. Salvucci Jan 2020

John Leamy's Atlantic Worlds: Trade, Religion, And Imperial Transformations In The Spanish Empire And Early Republican Philadelphia, Linda K. Salvucci

History Faculty Research

John Leamy (1757–1839) accumulated a substantial fortune through trade with the Spanish Empire following the American Revolution. This immigrant from Ireland, via southern Spain, was the key player in establishing Philadelphia's dominant role in Cuban markets during the 1790s. Unlike his Protestant competitors, as a high-profile Catholic, Leamy nurtured successful personal and commercial relationships with those Spanish imperial bureaucrats charged with regulating the trade. In the new century, as the Spanish Empire destabilized, Leamy adjusted both his business strategies and religious practices. With his Catholic loyalties in flux, he led the lay trustees of St. Mary's during the Hogan Schism …

"Sometimes Your Memories Are Not Your Own": The Graphic Turn And The Future Of Holocaust Representation, Victoria Aarons

English Faculty Research

“The legacy of the Shoah” writes Eva Hoffman, a child of Holocaust survivors, “is being passed on to … the post-generation … The inheritance … is being placed in our hands, perhaps in our trust.” We are entering an era that will witness the end of direct survivor testimony. As we move farther and farther from the events of the Shoah, subsequent generations, who see their own lives shaped by the defining rupture of the past, continue to respond to the call of memory. The current era has seen a burgeoning of Holocaust literary representation in the evolving genre of …

An Introduction To Blaga's Philosophy For Readers Of Zalmoxis, Michael Jones Jan 2020

An Introduction To Blaga's Philosophy For Readers Of Zalmoxis, Michael Jones

Faculty Publications and Presentations

In his excellent preface to Plantus' translation of Zalmoxis, Keith Hitchins mentions, but does not describe in detail, the philosophical system created by Lucian Blaga as a compliment to and source of his drama and poetry. In her forward, Plantus, the translator of Zalmoxis, likewise alludes to the philosophical undercurrents present in Blaga’s literary works in general and in Zalmoxis in particular. In my chapter I briefly outline this philosophical system for the readers of Zalmoxis. I do so – and the translator has invited me to do so – because, while Blaga’s poetry is not slave to his philosophy, …

Improving The Inhaler, Kabir Malkani, Jesse Evensky, Bradley Freid, Alex Reibstein, Gregory C. Kane, Md Jan 2020

Improving The Inhaler, Kabir Malkani, Jesse Evensky, Bradley Freid, Alex Reibstein, Gregory C. Kane, Md

Phase 1

Background: It is estimated that about 1 in 10 Americans use inhalers to deliver inhaled drugs for respiratory disease such as COPD and asthma. Some studies have shown that up to 84% of people use their inhaler incorrectly, which can cause long term problems and acute flareups. Therefore, improving the inhaler design to allow for ease of use was the main focus of our project.

Methods: We had a discussion with a pulmonary critical care attending who provided information on proper patient inhaler use and common user errors. He also gave us a sample of different inhalers on the market …

Color-Changing Device To Improve Adherence To Foley Catheter Replacement Protocols And Reduce Urinary Tract Infection Frequency, Alexander Straus, Ms, Kurt Hill, Bryn Cross, Jason M. Fields, Md

Phase 1

Background: Catheter associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) are a major source of patient morbidity and mortality in healthcare settings and have a significant financial impact on the healthcare system. Many hospitals have clinical protocols in place to continually reassess the necessity of indwelling foley catheters and remove them if their use is no longer warranted. However, it is still common for indwelling foley catheters to be overlooked and remain in place, even after meeting criteria for removal. A design project was conducted that sought to improve adherence to clinical protocols, and reduce frequency of CAUTIs, by creating a color-changing device …

Design Thinking For Community-Provider Collaboration: Designing A Culture- And User-Friendly Refugee Wellness Center, Ellen Solomon, Oluwatoni Okuboyejo, Shandon Coffman, Brandon Joa, Bon Ku, Md, Mpp

Phase 1

Background: Designing South Philadelphia’s first permanent healthcare facility dedicated to refugee health presents a unique opportunity to integrate cultural sensitivity with principles of community health. Design thinking (human-centered design) is a promising strategy to address health and social justice concerns through the development of innovative products and services that prioritize population needs. This project utilized design thinking to inform suggestions to the design of Hansjörg Wyss Wellness Center that promote a culturally sensitive and welcoming environment in order to improve healthcare outcomes for the refugee population in Philadelphia.

Methods: Standard qualitative data gathering methods were used to gather insight into …

Tuskegee Syphilis Study Not America's Only Medical Scandal: Chester M. Southam, Md, Henrietta Lacks, And The Sloan-Kettering Research Scandal, Leonard F. Vernon

Journal of Health Ethics

The words “human medical experimentation” conjure up visions of Nazi medicine, which has come to exemplify the worst evils in the history of humankind. Places like Auschwitz and Dachau, where human life was cheap and test subjects plentiful were used as laboratories.

In 2010 the US government apologized to Guatemala for allowing U.S. doctors to infect Guatemalan prisoners and mental patients with syphilis 65 years earlier, while acknowledging dozens of similar experiments in the United States. These included studies that often involved making healthy people sick. such as in the Tuskegee syphilis study.

These experiments were often life threatening and …
