To write history one must have source material. This is a ridiculous truism, but is sometimes overlooked by would-be writers of history. A man cannot write history by reconstructing the past from his own imagination. Such a process produces fiction, not history. Probably the feature most unattractive to the majority of writers is the gathering of the source material from which history is to be written. This collecting of material often does not fire the imagination, and is considered, I am afraid, by many sheer drudgery. In making the following observations as to the various distinguished members of The Florida Historical "Society," organized A. D. 1856, the author has mentioned those prominent men of Florida members of the Society whom he has been able to obtain information about by talking to old citizens, an examination of the various published histories of Florida, an examination of the Florida Supreme Court Reports and Acts of the Legislature of Florida. In the next issue of the Quarterly Magazine, we will be glad to publish accounts of members of the Society of 1856 not especially mentioned in this article.

The following extract is from Miss Sarah L. Jones' "Life in the South from the Commencement of the War," which was published in London, in 1863. The author was an English school teacher, who came to the United States in 1859, and found herself professionally engaged in the Southern States at the outbreak of hostilities. Although it is well known that the neighborhood of Melrose is rich in Indian mounds and a fine hunting ground for flint arrowheads, pottery; and the like, few are aware that within a few miles of Melrose was fought one of the most important battles on Florida soil. Turning the hands of time backward along the dial of Floridian history, we find chronicled in the year 1559- or according to some writers 1553- the birth of an infant city on the shores of Ochees, a beautiful deep water bay, which offered safe anchorage to a fleet sailing northward under the command of one Tristam DeLuna, one of those adventurous Spaniards who, following the ignis fatuus of all Spanish explorers of the gulf - the fabulous golden stores of a country to the northward - had entered the harbor in search of a landing place.

Among the most distinguished names of Floridians who have been honored with the position as chief magistrate of the state stands the name of Francis Philip Fleming. Notable and conspicuous as were his many public services unquestionably that of the establishment of a State Board of Health exceeded all others, since this service has proven of immeasurable benefit to the state and also to the country at large in preventing the introduction of epidemic diseases from other lands.
