Organizing Dark Matter: W.A.G.E. As Alternative Worker Organization, Greig De Peuter

Since its founding in 2008, W.A.G.E. (Working Artists and the Greater Economy) has worked to reform the economic habits of US art institutions and of the artists upon whose cultural work these institutions are dependent. Inside a decade, W.A.G.E. went from a small grassroots collective to an internationally recognized, yet lean, organization, which not only advocates for labour standards in the nonprofit art sector, but also develops practical tools to begin the work of doing better by equality in the art world. This chapter positions W.A.G.E. as an example of what Immanuel Ness terms “new forms of worker organization.” Informed …

Building From Within: How Two Female Prisoners Survived Incarceration, Laura M. Cuevas Meléndez

According to the US Commission of Civil Rights, from 1980 to 2016, the percentage of imprisoned women surpassed 730% (4). Severe isolation, lack of sunlight, and sensory deprivation tactics were employed during the 1980s, when Silvia Baraldini and Laura Whitehorn were incarcerated at the federal women’s prison in Lexington, Kentucky. Both women maintained their basic humanity and spirit by creating educational opportunities for fellow inmates, advocating for improved conditions, and sharing their experiences through letter writing. They each wrote hundreds of letters to friends, family, and other social activists concerned with their plight. Using a collection of letters written by …

Family is more than a wife, a husband, and their children. Family is support and reliance. It is unconditional love. It's a concept many of us understand and feel a deep connection. This contemplative playscape is dedicated to Sarah West and her family, a former faculty member of the College of Design. This design is unified from three individual components, representative of each family member. The center piece acts as Sarah and her memory as a mother, wife, and artist. Pfister of photographic negatives from the inventories of the Ruston, Louisiana photographic studios of John Green Davis (1890's-?) and John Green Davis Jr. (?-1943), of the amateur photographers William Marbury (1930's-1940's) and J.E. Woodward (mid-1940's-1971), and of Louisiana Tech University photographer Bob J. Pfister (1950's), including index prepared by Pamela Pfister, who made the prints. Woodward accumulated the collection, which was given at his death to Pfister (some are photocopies).
