Decadent Orientalisms: The Decay Of Colonial Modernity [Table Of Contents], David Fieni Jan 2020

Decadent Orientalisms: The Decay Of Colonial Modernity [Table Of Contents], David Fieni

Literature

Decadent Orientalisms presents a sustained critique of the ways Orientalism and decadence have formed a joint discursive mode of the imperial imagination. Attentive to historical and literary configurations of language, race, religion, and power, Fieni shows the importance of understanding Western discourses of Eastern decline and obsolescence together with Arab and Islamic responses in which the language of decadence returns as a characteristic of the West.

Taking seriously Edward Said’s claim that Orientalism is a “style of having power,” Fieni works historically through the aesthetic and ideological effects of Orientalist style, showing how it is at once comparative, descriptive, and …

Anarchaeologies: Reading As Misreading [Table Of Contents], Erin Graff Zivin Jan 2020

Anarchaeologies: Reading As Misreading [Table Of Contents], Erin Graff Zivin

Literature

How do we read after the so-called death of literature? If we are to attend to the proclamations that the representational apparatuses of literature and politics are dead, what aesthetic, ethical, and political possibilities remain for us today? Our critical moment, Graff Zivin argues, demands anarchaeological reading: reading for the blind spots, errors, points of opacity or untranslatability in works of philosophy and art.

Rather than applying concepts from philosophy in order to understand or elucidate cultural works, the book exposes works of philosophy, literary theory, narrative, poetry, film, and performance art and activism to one another. Working specifically …

Led Down The Garden Path: Cognitive Processing Of English Language Idioms, Daniel Alan Vandehey Jan 2020

Led Down The Garden Path: Cognitive Processing Of English Language Idioms, Daniel Alan Vandehey

Dissertations and Theses

The discourse community surrounding the study of idioms often disagree regarding the proper classification of idioms. Some scholars believe that the figurative meaning of many idioms cannot be determined through the deconstruction of their lexical parts, and therefore should be classified as an irreducible lexical unit. Others believe that even though the figurative meaning of some idioms are obscured, people process these opaque idioms as they would a metaphor, constructing meaning through an integration process that includes the component pieces of the idiom, the surrounding context, and the message receiver's knowledge network. This study forwards research concerning whether idioms should …

Crania Japonica: Ethnographic Portraiture, Scientific Discourse, And The Fashioning Of Ainu/Japanese Colonial Identities, Jeffrey Braytenbah Jan 2020

Crania Japonica: Ethnographic Portraiture, Scientific Discourse, And The Fashioning Of Ainu/Japanese Colonial Identities, Jeffrey Braytenbah

Dissertations and Theses

Japan's colonial activities on the island of Hokkaido were instrumental to the creation of modern Japanese national identity. Within this construction, the indigenous Ainu people came to be seen in dialectical opposition to the 'modern' and 'civilized' identity that Japanese colonial actors fashioned for themselves. This process was articulated through travel literature, ethnographic portraiture, and discourse in scientific racism which racialized perceived divisions between the Ainu and Japanese and contributed to the unmaking of the Ainu homeland: Ainu Mosir. The resulting narrative was used to legitimize Japanese imperialism, transforming the Empire of Japan into the only non-Western member state …

Does Group Size Matter? The Impact Of Reciprocity On Giving In Local Faith Communities, Jack B. Watson Jr., Karol A. Chandler-Ezell Jan 2020

Does Group Size Matter? The Impact Of Reciprocity On Giving In Local Faith Communities, Jack B. Watson Jr., Karol A. Chandler-Ezell

The Journal of Faith, Education, and Community

We compare and contrast how group size affects the internal structure & relational dynamics of religious communities, ranging from small religious congregations to megachurches (in American society). Classic anthropological economic and evolutionary theory holds that reciprocity, particularly altruistic generalized reciprocity, is most likely to strongly influence small groups, especially kinship-based groups. In the case of non-kin groups, studies of behavior mimicking kin altruism have found that all forms of reciprocity, including extreme giving and high-cost behaviors, are most likely to be found in small social groups with tight bonds, particularly those with shared religious beliefs. In the case of larger …

Watch Me Make Her Dance: Stepping Out Of The Round Of Abuse, Sheila Speer Jan 2020

Watch Me Make Her Dance: Stepping Out Of The Round Of Abuse, Sheila Speer

Theses and Dissertations

Memoir writers are usually survivors of some sort of ordeal, and they may have struggled to overcome race, class, or economic issues just to mention a few issues that may have prompted a memoir. The struggle they faced in the past and the success they have garnered keep them hovering above their pasts. In other words, memoir writers do not want to fully return to their pasts even though they are writing about the past. Instead, memoir writers want to show how far they have come from the past by writing in their grown-up, or educated, voices. The aim in …

Will Wonders Never Cease: Jess’S Translations, 1959-1976, Lily Goldberg

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines Jess’s series of Translations paintings (1959-1976). It argues that, in subject matter, painterly technique, and conceptual approach, the works are shrewdly self-referential and grapple with many of the primary concerns of postwar American art, questions of appropriation, authorship, figuration versus abstraction, and selfhood and identity.

Feminism And The Staged Uncanny, Jessica C. Mensch

Theses and Dissertations

In my Thesis, I work towards a new definition of the uncanny and show the transformation of its sense in the modern period. I will then show how this transformed sense appears in the media of mechanical reproduction—stage theatrics, photography and film—and, then, specifically in my art practice.

Promiscuous Waves, Xuan Zheng Jan 2020

Promiscuous Waves, Xuan Zheng

Theses and Dissertations

For the project, I invited friends, lovers, and mentors to share their experiences and memories of cruising in public spaces. Growing up in China, I never had the chance to publicly discuss my concerns with my sexuality, and the sense of liberation in the West had always served as a source of hope. Only after I came to the United States, did I realize that the liberation was nothing more than an illusion. I made two road trips across America to take photographs and embrace a sense of freedom, but on the trips, I ended up having sex with many …
