The Modernity And Dilemma Of Art Revolution, Xiaofeng Zeng Jan 2020

The Modernity And Dilemma Of Art Revolution, Xiaofeng Zeng

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Considering "art" as a dynamic discourse, this paper contextualizes the concept in the period of the late Qing dynasty through the May Fourth period in connection with its competitive and interactive notions. The emphasis will be laid upon issues such as the establishment of literary beauty, literature independent of arts, the relationship between picture and art, and the value crisis of Chinese painting. Rooted in the social current swinging between reform and revolution during the late Qing dynasty and the May Fourth period, the formation and disciplinization of "art" in the modern sense embodied a modern appeal of anti-traditionalism, which …

The Origins Of Yao Xie's Poetics And The Construction Of The "Siming School" Of Poetry In East Zhejiang, Chen Li, Yazhong Ma Jan 2020

The Origins Of Yao Xie's Poetics And The Construction Of The "Siming School" Of Poetry In East Zhejiang, Chen Li, Yazhong Ma

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Yao Xie's early poetry activities in the Zhenhu Poetry Club of Ningbo reflected that Yao Xie, Li Zhi and Ye Yuanjie were all influenced by Wu Dexuan and had similar views in terms of poetics. Thus, a possible path to explore the origins of Yao Xie's poetics is to consult Li Zhi's Poetry Remarks by Baihua Hermit, then to trace to the theories of Wu Dexuan, Song Dazun and Yao Nai, and finally to refer to the works on poetics by other members of the Zhunhu Poetry Club, particularly Chen Jin's Answering Questions in the Bamboos. This reveals the generative …

Ezra Pound's Poetry Translation And Stylistic Innovation, Liming Chen Jan 2020

Ezra Pound's Poetry Translation And Stylistic Innovation, Liming Chen

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Ezra Pound's (1885-1972) literary career consists of two mutually enhancing constituents: translation and creation, which, as a whole, serve as an experimental field that has enriched his imagistic and vorticist poetics, including his poetics of translation. These three dimensions are closely related to his (un)intentional creative transforming and misreading of classical Chinese literature and philosophy. Pound's poetry creation and free translation show strong stylistic consciousness and strategies, but this has largely remains largely unexplored by academic research. His stylistic strategies take such forms as English haiku, the defamiliarization or foregrounding of ideograms, and the stylistic collage, and these innovations not …

Inheritance Or Critique: On The Relation Between The Origin Of German Tragic Drama And The Birth Of Tragedy, Yunfan Yao Jan 2020

Inheritance Or Critique: On The Relation Between The Origin Of German Tragic Drama And The Birth Of Tragedy, Yunfan Yao

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

While Friedrich Nietzsche and Walter Benjamin both acknowledged that tragedy and trauerspiel are two different genres, they had contrasting elucidation of the characteristics and significances of trauerspiel. According to Nietzsche, trauerspiel was an unsuccessful mimesis of tragedy. However; Benjamin saw in trauerspiel a kind of special value. This difference was a result of their different understandings of the concept of ursprung. Nietzsche considered ursprung as an attempt to integrate Apollonian and Dionysian spirits, while Benjamin presented the structure of ursprung as a destructing force against monolithic sovereignty. Despite this contradiction, Benjamin accpeted Nietzsche's view and took Socrates as a symbol …

Millet's Seeding: Form And Subject In The 1920s Evolution Of New Literature, Yunhao Chen Jan 2020

Millet's Seeding: Form And Subject In The 1920s Evolution Of New Literature, Yunhao Chen

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Jean-François Millet, a French painter in the 19th century, was first introduced to China via New Youth (1919) as a representative of "Ibsenism". Millet was so influential in Chinese literary circles of the 1920s that he played a key role in the aesthetic enlightenment in parallel with the evolution of new literature. Millet's seeding in Chinese literary field witnessed the shifts from the "Renaissance" spiritual pursuit to the self-consciousness of the literary form, and from the construction of pure literature to the birth of artistic subjects in the late 1920s. During this process, Millet and the new literature formed a …

Second Nature And Modern Art: On Lukács' Response To Hegel's "End Of Art", Kaihua Lu Jan 2020

Second Nature And Modern Art: On Lukács' Response To Hegel's "End Of Art", Kaihua Lu

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

To comprehend Hegel's argument that "Art is a thing of the past", one needs to learn Hegel's basic judgment of modern society which is derived from his concept of "second nature". Young Lukács, however, in light of Hegel, gives his own negative version of "second nature" and his judgment of the relation between the modern world and modern art in respect of lyric poetry and novel. Therefore, it is the interaction between the concept of second nature and the concept of modern art that helps us to make sense of why Lukács took a course against Hegel, though he had …

Voice And New Literacies: Student Perceptions Of Writing Instruction In A Secondary English Classroom, Jenny M. Martin Jan 2020

Voice And New Literacies: Student Perceptions Of Writing Instruction In A Secondary English Classroom, Jenny M. Martin

Teaching/Writing: The Journal of Writing Teacher Education

Voice is an integral part of writing instruction, and over half of state writing assessments include voice on scoring rubrics; yet, there is a dearth of research on voice and writing instruction with adolescents. Increasingly new literacies and digital tools are being used in the high school English classroom but with relatively little known about how these tools can teach voice during writing instruction. This qualitative single-case study examined how a public school, ninth-grade English teacher used new literacies to develop voice in students’ writing and participants’ perception of these instructional choices. The sample included the teacher and 14 students, …

Sandy Winters: Creation And Destruction, Shannon Egan Jan 2020

Sandy Winters: Creation And Destruction, Shannon Egan

Schmucker Art Catalogs

The title of Sandy Winters’s exhibition is a bit of a misnomer, as the process that perhaps best describes the artist’s practice is creation and re-creation. The evolution of her long and active career reveals a sensitive awareness of connectivity and progeny. In other words, she allows for her paintings, prints, drawings, and sculpture to give birth in a way to subsequent works. She continually recognizes the pregnant possibilities in a singular form and the opportunities for each to exist in new, unique environments. Aspects of Winters’s oeuvre seem to have a generative function, and these repetitive motifs exist as …

Reading Between The Lines: Revealing Interiority, Paramita Atmodiwirjo, Yandi Andri Yatmo Jan 2020

Reading Between The Lines: Revealing Interiority, Paramita Atmodiwirjo, Yandi Andri Yatmo

Interiority

Words, texts and narratives have the potential to reveal the complexity of interiority; they can tell stories beyond the physical materiality of space to reveal spatial occupation, address social and cultural issues embedded in space and capture the trajectories of inhabitation over time. This issue of Interiority addresses writing and reading as a form of inquiry towards the idea of interiority being embedded within the represented forms of architecture and interior. The articles in this issue demonstrate various forms of inquiry concerning the idea of interiority through various media of ‘writing,’ then explore how their reading becomes a way of …

Slashed Interiors: Text/Space, Igor Siddiqui Jan 2020

Slashed Interiors: Text/Space, Igor Siddiqui

Interiority

This essay explores the relationship between text and space by considering the notion of writing interiors as a form of creative practice. The research focuses on the textual and spatial uses of the punctuation mark slash (/), as evidenced in a range of text-based works by Barbara Kruger, Glenn Ligon, Dom Sylvester Houédard, Anni Albers, and other artists. The first part of the essay surveys the typographic character’s varied uses in written language; the second part considers its role within artwork titles, namely how its presence shapes spatial interpretations of each artwork in question; in the third part, preceding the …

Buildings, Faces, Songs Of Alienation: How Interiority Transforms The Meaning Out There, Peter Marthinus De Kock Jan 2020

Buildings, Faces, Songs Of Alienation: How Interiority Transforms The Meaning Out There, Peter Marthinus De Kock

Interiority

This paper presents a theoretical framework that explores visual meaning in the design and use of interior space. It is comprised of three main parts. The first outlines the framework and draws on several key theories. The second introduces three very different constructs as case studies that in#uence (or are a product of) spatial quality, namely: buildings, faces, and songs of alienation. The third part is a discussion about how each of these three constructs are linked to each other as well as to the idea of interiority. While architectural forms are containers of meaning, the way in which interior …

Urban Interiority In The Anthropocene, Nerea Feliz Arrizabalaga Jan 2020

Urban Interiority In The Anthropocene, Nerea Feliz Arrizabalaga

Interiority

This paper explores how interior design could amplify the current discourse on sustainability within urban public space. The consideration of a number of contemporary authors that are questioning the traditional notion of interiority situates this paper within an expansive understanding of interiority in the context of the Anthropocene. Interiority is considered as a transferable condition based on modes of interior occupation, that can take place on the outdoors, and is often found in public spaces within dense urban areas. In the face of an upcoming biodiversity crisis, this text advocates for a necessary disciplinary shift away from traditional anthropocentric views, …

Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy And The Built Environment, Dak Kopec, Kendall Marsh Jan 2020

Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy And The Built Environment, Dak Kopec, Kendall Marsh

Interiority

Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs) are often connected to the development of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain disease commonly found in athletes, military veterans, and others that have a history of repetitive brain trauma. This formative exploratory study looked at person-centred design techniques for a person with CTE. The person-centred design method used for this study was based on a two-tiered reductionist approach; the first tier was to identify common symptoms and concerns associated with CTE from the literature. This information provided specific symptoms that were addressed through brainstorming ideations. Each singular ideation accommodated the singular, or small cluster …

The Local Festival Of Kampos: A Fictional Narrative Of Place, Space And Interiority, Maria Vidali Jan 2020

The Local Festival Of Kampos: A Fictional Narrative Of Place, Space And Interiority, Maria Vidali

Interiority

This article is created out of the architectural space and narratives of village life. The narratives concern the interiority of life in Kampos, a farming village on the Greek Cycladic island of Tinos, on the day when the village celebrates the Holy Trinity, its patron saint. The village area on this festive day is depicted in the movement of the families from their houses to the church, the procession from the patron saint’s church to a smaller church through the main village street, and, finally, in the movement of the villagers back to speci!c houses. Through a series of spatial …

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

The purpose of this report is to provide evidence for the need to further intentionally incorporate equity into Oregon’s 100 Year Water Vision. Four case studies contextualize this need and highlight the variety of water issues throughout the state, supported by linguistic analyses of local newspapers. As Oregon policy-makers are responsible for ensuring working water systems for all Oregonians, we also suggest implementable criteria for the evaluation of equity in water issues and decision-making. This student-led and interdisciplinary report comes from the Haeffner-Cowal Oregon Water Stories research lab at Portland State University.

On The Nature Of Public Interiority, Liz Teston Jan 2020

On The Nature Of Public Interiority, Liz Teston

Interiority

This essay explores the intersection between interiority, urbanism, and human perception. I view interiority as a condition of the senses rather than an indoor place. Revelations of interiority can be discovered within the urban realm, in public spaces, and in intimate interior conditions. I am especially interested in “public interiority” or these cases of interiority that can be found in exterior urban places. Understanding interiority as a perceived condition grounds the built environment in phenomenology, varied human experiences, and everyday conditions. Herein, I begin with an ontology of interiority, which focuses on various ways of perceiving the nature of things—phenomenology, …
