Revolutions: Moments And Movements In Historical Perspective, Seton Hall University, Department Of History Feb 2020

Revolutions: Moments And Movements In Historical Perspective, Seton Hall University, Department Of History

Symposium in Comparative History

What is a Revolution? Historians have used the term broadly to describe movements resulting in the toppling of regimes and establishment of new social and political orders, yet much remains unclear. Are revolutions an intrinsically modern phenomenon, or can the concept be productively applied to events in the ancient and medieval worlds? Can revolutions be clearly bounded in time? How do they begin and end? Is there a common trajectory? When and why do revolutions arise in interrelated clusters? However we choose to answer such questions, the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and recent events, from …

Making Space For Mothering: Collaboration As Feminist Practice, Julie Searcy, Angela N. Castañeda Feb 2020

Making Space For Mothering: Collaboration As Feminist Practice, Julie Searcy, Angela N. Castañeda

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Our collaborative practice spans nearly a decade working together on data collection, writing, presentations, and publications as we’ve explored the intimate care that doulas provide to women in labor. In this essay, we use intimate labor as both a practice and a theoretical frame to think of collaboration as a feminist project that recognizes the expertise gathered from mothering and makes space for it in academia. Eileen Boris and Rhacel Salazar Parreñas (2010, 7) define intimate labor as “work that involves embodied and affective interactions in the service of social reproduction,” and suggest that it requires “bodily or emotional closeness, …

The Psychological Effects Of Starvation In The Holocaust: The Dehumanization And Deterioration Of Its Victims, Kelly Young Feb 2020

The Psychological Effects Of Starvation In The Holocaust: The Dehumanization And Deterioration Of Its Victims, Kelly Young

Augsburg Honors Review

My paper exposes the inherent link between the intense starvation implemented by the Nazi regime in concentration camps during the Holocaust and the psychological state of the victims of the camp system. Explored in this essay are the deteriorative and dehumanizing effects that starvation played on the mind of the camp prisoner. In this paper, I explore the widespread and intense malnutrition among the prisoners that led to cognitive decay such as comprehension complications and loss of concentration. I also examine the cognitive and psychological processes that led to acts of desperation, such as cannibalism, as well as the specifically …

From Tragedy To Policy: Representations Of Muslims And Islam In U.S. Mainstream Media, Andrew Thompson Feb 2020

From Tragedy To Policy: Representations Of Muslims And Islam In U.S. Mainstream Media, Andrew Thompson

Augsburg Honors Review

As the wodd becomes more globalized, the lines dividing countries and cultures are increasingly blurred. Thc inter-connectedness of the globe brings people thousands of miles away together in a matter of seconds. However, as globalization has increased, other theories of dividing the world have arisen. One of the most prominent theories of dividing up the wodd was published in 1993 in Foreign Affairs by Samuel Fluntington. Huntington attempted to provide readers with a new term that described a long-standing, tnternalzed political myth: "The idea of a Clash between Civthzattons is a sort of electric spark that sets people's imagination alight, …

Realistic Fantasy And Sub-Creation: A Narratological Approach To Evaluating Storyworld Construction By Using J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-Earth, Dustin J. Ritchea Feb 2020

Realistic Fantasy And Sub-Creation: A Narratological Approach To Evaluating Storyworld Construction By Using J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-Earth, Dustin J. Ritchea

Augsburg Honors Review

This essay examines J.R.R. Tolkien's concept of "sub-creation' meaning both myth creation and the power to create artificial storyworlds, and how it predates contemporary narratology. The two approaches to narrative share similar thought processes. This essay examines how Tolkien's theory of fantasy was built on the same foundation as narratology and even helped create certain narrative dynamics before contemporary narratology defined the terms. Using elements of narrative dynamics and Tolkien's insights on art and imagination, as well as the creation of artificial worlds, I develop a set of criteria for story-world narrative to showcase Tolkien's techniques: 1) Space and temporality …

Bollywood Images: The Illusions And Realities Of Arranged Marriages, Weddings, Dowries, And Attitudes Toward The Girl Child In The Lives Of Women In India, Margaret Lundberg

Augsburg Honors Review

Offering audiences a romanticized interpretation of Indian life, the images in Bollywood films present the viewer with loving and supportive families, beautiful wedding rituals, and a "happily ever after" point of view that does not quite measure up to the societal realities of life for millions of Indian women. Juxtaposing themes and images from three popular Bollywood films against current attitudes towards women in Indian society, this paper will analyze the issues surrounding women's choice of marriage partners, the high cost of weddings and dowries, female infanticide, and the violence too often suffered by women and girls in India through …
