The School For Scandal, Otterbein Theatre And Dance Department

2019-2020 Season

The London gossip scene is buzzing. Masquerading behind the veneer of polite society, malicious prattlers trade gossip like gamblers and ruin reputations for sport. As much as we are all familiar with reports of lies, rumors, backhanded comments, and fake-news, this is 1777 England, and the newspaper industry is just getting started. Two brothers are tested for their trustworthiness by their wealthy uncle amidst a myriad of hilarious twists and subplots involving a crazy cast of characters including Lady Teazle, Lady Sneerwell, Surface, Backbite, Snake, and more. In what is often considered one of the best comedy of manners plays, …

Powered By Social Energies: A New Historicism Approach To Gone With The Wind, Kimberly Taylor Feb 2020

Powered By Social Energies: A New Historicism Approach To Gone With The Wind, Kimberly Taylor

Augsburg Honors Review

Gone with the Wind was a runaway bestseller in the 1930s due to Mitchell's ability to pull the circulating social energies of her own time period into a book ostensibly set in the Civil War and Reconstruction Period. Using Stephen Greenblatt's ideas from Shakespearean Negotiations, I trace these in Gone with the Wind with support from multiple sources. These swirling social energies provide a sense of inevitability to the story which underpins Scarlett's frantic survivalism, but they are not transformed. This lack of transformation creates a disturbing reality wherein Scarlett can learn nothing, change nothing and rail against her apparent …

Olympic Athletes Or Beauty Queens? The Sexualization Of Female Athletes, Rachel N. Smoot Feb 2020

Olympic Athletes Or Beauty Queens? The Sexualization Of Female Athletes, Rachel N. Smoot

Augsburg Honors Review

The Olympic Games is one of the most watched sporting events in the modern era. The games provide a highly publicized international stage where the competitors are representatives of their country. Media outlets present a visible discourse in the way male and female representatives are portrayed (Messner, Duncan, Jensen. 1993). While male athletes are applauded for their strength, agility and skill, female athletes are sexualized. From the midriff baring bikinis of beach volleyball to the leggy leotards of gymnastics, women's entertainment value stems from the sexualization of their bodies instead of their athletic abilities (Kane, M. J. 1996). While male …

Huck Finn And (Still) Racist America, Daniel Polaschek Feb 2020

Huck Finn And (Still) Racist America, Daniel Polaschek

Augsburg Honors Review

The purpose of this paper is to explore the ways in which the infamously banned book The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn can be used in contemporary society and, more importantly, in schools. Ever since Mark Twain wrote the book, Huck Finn has received bombardments of criticism, both positive and negative. Unfortunately, for the most part the negative criticism has made itself more easily heard, causing the book to be banned from countless libraries and public and private schools. Given the ill treatment of the book, this paper will argue that the race discussion inherent in Mark Twain's The Adventures of …

Cultivating An Ethic Of Care At A Hispanic-Serving College Of Education: Individual Stories And A Collective Narrative, Karin A. Lewis, Miryam Espinosa-Dulanto, Jacqueline B. Koonce, Vejoya Viren Feb 2020

Cultivating An Ethic Of Care At A Hispanic-Serving College Of Education: Individual Stories And A Collective Narrative, Karin A. Lewis, Miryam Espinosa-Dulanto, Jacqueline B. Koonce, Vejoya Viren

Bilingual and Literacy Studies Faculty Publications

The “ethic of care,” according to Sander-Staudt, is built on the “motivation to care for those who are dependent and vulnerable, and is inspired by both memories of being cared for and the idealizations of self”. Research on teaching behaviors that make a difference to student learning implies that good relationships with students and the ethics of care are important practices of teaching. However, these are not overtly stated, “possibly because the concepts are nebulous and more philosophical than pragmatic”. The impact of one’s teaching practice on students is revealed through meetings with former students who remember interactions, unrelated to …

Unity Through Division: A Revision Of The Haudenosaunee's Policy Of Neutrality, Haley O'Shaughnessy Feb 2020

Unity Through Division: A Revision Of The Haudenosaunee's Policy Of Neutrality, Haley O'Shaughnessy

Augsburg Honors Review

The Haudenosaunee people, otherwise known as the Five Nations of Iroquois, negotiated separate treaties with the English and French in 1701. Scholars asserted Haudenosaunee desires to "sit on their mats and smoke in peace," was to maintain their political sovereignty, repress internal factionalism, and "play off' the European powers for their own economic gain. Nonetheless, their implicit assumptions of the cultural and political structures of the Great League of Peace and Power and Iroquois Confederacy, particularly that all Five Nations were centralized under one "policy of neutrality," is inconsistent with the reciprocal and decentralized posture of the Haudenosaunee. By understanding …

Graffiti As Art: Shedding Light On The Artistic Value Of Graffiti In Minneapolis, Luke Iverson Feb 2020

Graffiti As Art: Shedding Light On The Artistic Value Of Graffiti In Minneapolis, Luke Iverson

Augsburg Honors Review

Throughout the paper the author finds it incredibly important to set the stage for the audience and provide them with proper graffiti culture terminology, explanations of the styles and common motivations of graffiti, along with how the public and government typically respond to graffiti. The author seeks to share further understanding with the audience through sharing the trends of location of graffiti, the "hiddert art" aspect of graffiti creation, the impact of legal walls and spaces in graffiti culture, how social media impacts graffiti, and ultimately how citizens can begin to recognize graffiti writers as artists. This submission challenges the …

The Observed Effects Of Recreation Jamstix™ Use On Mood: A Pilot Study, Destiny Henn Feb 2020

The Observed Effects Of Recreation Jamstix™ Use On Mood: A Pilot Study, Destiny Henn

Augsburg Honors Review

The purpose of this pilot study was to investigate the changes in mood before and after a one time improvisation with a Jamstik™ in order to understand if and how the experience will produce a statistically significant method for quantitatively addressing mood in music therapy. Participants (N: 15) were a convenience sample of male and female college students. Using the Quick Mood Scale (Woodruffe-Peacock, Turnbull, Johnson, Elahi, & Preston, 1998), this research compared pre- and post-test measures in participants' moods after a 15 minute improvisation session with the Jamstik™ while the researcher accompanied on a drum. Results indicated immediate and …

Joycean Babeling: Scattered Language In 'Oxen Of The Sun', Mae Capozzi Feb 2020

Joycean Babeling: Scattered Language In 'Oxen Of The Sun', Mae Capozzi

Augsburg Honors Review

This paper considers James Joyce's Ulysses. It focuses specifically on Joyce's use of language in "Oxen of the Sun." I interpret the episode, which figures the conception, gestation, and birth of language alongside a literal birth, as a construction and deconstruction of the English language that suggests its ultimate inefficacy. I framed my close reading of the chapter with theoretical work by Thomas Aquinas, Ferdinand de Saussure, Walter Benjamin, and Jacques Derrida. I argue that Joyce, by acknowledging the limits of language even as he continues to write, reaffirms and reinscribes the role of the Artist. I contend that Joyce …

Some Strategies To Improve Student Success, And Reduce Dfwi Rates In Large, Introductory U.S. History Classes., Rchard Samuelson

Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy

HIST 200 is a challenge for many students at CSUSB. For many students it is one of the first college level classes they take, and the transition to college can be difficult. In addition, reports indicate that as of 2018 roughly 40% of entering first year students in the California State University System probably need some remedial classes to get up to speed for CSU studies.

Conventionally, such classes, often with 150 students, take the form of classic large lectures and textbook classes. The trouble is that lecturing has been shown, repeatedly, to be inferior to more active approaches. …

Daerim Dong As A Chinatown: Setbacks And Challenges, Wendy W. Tan Feb 2020

Daerim Dong As A Chinatown: Setbacks And Challenges, Wendy W. Tan

Publications and Research

While there is not a single Chinese paifang, or any establishment targeted for tourist attractions, Daerim Dong in Seoul, due to its high concentration of Chinese population and business activities, has been considered as an unofficial 2nd Korean Chinatown. However, at the same time, many indicators are also pointing to the discouraging fact that the path toward making this plan a reality is full of bumps. Why is this conflicting situation happening? To satisfy her own curiosity, the author did intensive literature research and also made a field trip to this district. This essay states some of her findings.

Intercessory Power: A Literary Analysis Of Ethics And Care In Toni Morrison’S Song Of Solomon, Alice Walker’S Meridian, And Toni Cade Bambara’S Those Bones Are Not My Child, Kelly Mills

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to examine post-Reconstruction literature as an intercessor that creates a common memory among readers and activates them as ethical agents who can move through retributive violence rather than enact violence. With the increase of racial violence in the United States, it is essential to find ways to end the cycle of retributive violence and establish a justice system that does not marginalize individuals but forges connections in the midst of oppression. This literary analysis engages three novels—Toni Morrison’s Song of Solomon, Alice Walker’s Meridian, and Toni Cade Bambara’s Those Bones Are Not My Child: …
