The Time To Question, Rethink And Popularize The Notion Of ‘Women’S Issues’: Lessons From Jordan’S Popular And Labor Movements From 2006 To Now, Sara Ababneh
Journal of International Women's Studies
Jordanian women were an integral part of the Jordanian Popular Movement (al Hirak al Sha’bi al Urduni, Hirak in short) protests in 2011/2012. Yet, despite their large numbers and presence, female protestors did not call for any of the commonly known ‘women’s issues’ (qadaya al mar’a) which include fighting Gender Based Violence (GBV), legal reform, increasing women’s political participation, and women’s economic empowerment. This paper argues that the protestors’ silence concerning most of the problems usually included in the list of ‘women’s issues’ raises the question of how prevalent these issues are (or not) in the lives of Jordanian women. …

Teenage Pregnancy In Refugee Camps: A Narrative Synthesis, Desire Urindwanayo, Solina Richter
Journal of International Women's Studies
Around 6.6 million adolescents worldwide are displaced by war or political conflicts, and a large proportion of this group is living in Africa. Moreover, the statistics show that 90% of the youth in this group experience conflict, poverty, and a lack of opportunity. Within this displaced group, teenage pregnancy is one of the most significant health issues. This paper aims to synthesize knowledge on teenage pregnancy in refugee camps. Different databases were used, namely Scopus, EMBASE, Web of Science, CINAHL, Medline (Ovid), and ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Global. Among 987 articles retrieved, only 10 were included in this narrative synthesis. …

Journal of International Women's Studies
Behavioral pattern is the characteristic ways a person acts and has been recognized as a cause of many home accidents (h-accd). This study reviewed the types and prevalence of injuries among women in domestic works and proposes a model using Artificial Neural Network (ANN) function to forecast the safety level of women in domestic duty. The study was conducted in some parts of Western Nigeria among 340 subjects (171 married and 169 unmarried) using questionnaire. SPSS was used for data analysis. The ANN function was developed in MATLAB 2015a using the subjects’ behavioral patterns and the model was used to …
Middle Eastern Women Between Oppression And Resistance: Case Studies Of Iraqi, Palestinian And Kurdish Women Of Turkey, Yasmin Khodary, Noha Salah, Nada Mohsen
Middle Eastern Women Between Oppression And Resistance: Case Studies Of Iraqi, Palestinian And Kurdish Women Of Turkey, Yasmin Khodary, Noha Salah, Nada Mohsen
Journal of International Women's Studies
Wars and conflicts have had a profound impact on women and gender in the Middle East. In this article, we aim to highlight the various ways in which the ongoing oppression and conflict in the Middle East shape the responses of the Iraqi, Palestinian and Kurdish women of Turkey and the object of their struggles. We go beyond the ‘Orientalist’ discourse, which depicts Middle Eastern women in armed conflicts as solely vulnerable and helpless victims, to discuss the resisting roles played by the Iraqi, Palestinian and Kurdish women of Turkey. Middle Eastern women have played and continue to play major …
Beyond Feminism: The Egg As A Symbol Of The Brazilian Dictatorship In The Work Of Anna Maria Maiolino, Mónica Lindsay-Pérez
Beyond Feminism: The Egg As A Symbol Of The Brazilian Dictatorship In The Work Of Anna Maria Maiolino, Mónica Lindsay-Pérez
Journal of International Women's Studies
So easy to break and yet impossible to fix, the egg is, in itself, a contradiction: soft but hard; delicate but durable; impermanent but episodic. One of nature’s most interesting creations, it is impossibly bigger on the inside than the outside and has accordingly captivated artists’ minds throughout history. Artists have employed the egg as an allegorical tool for its religious, surrealist, or feminist connotations. Ana Maria Maiolino, a Brazilian artist born in 1942, pushed the egg metaphor beyond its most common iconographic meanings. For the artist, the egg was not simply a religious, philosophical, or feminist symbol, but also …
Why Are Women’S Self-Help Groups On The Periphery Of Adivasi Movements In India? Insights From Practitioners, Parijat Ghosh, Dibyendu Chaudhuri, Debasish Biswas
Why Are Women’S Self-Help Groups On The Periphery Of Adivasi Movements In India? Insights From Practitioners, Parijat Ghosh, Dibyendu Chaudhuri, Debasish Biswas
Journal of International Women's Studies
‘Adivasi’ is an identity of protest against the oppressive practices of displacement and dispossession faced by tribal communities across India. As the social and political scenario of the vast Central Indian Plateau (CIP), the homeland of many such communities, is shaped by the social dynamics of oppression and resistance, any social or political organisation working in this region for justice and equity has to not only understand this adivasi consciousness of resistance against the concentration of capital and accumulation of surplus through a process of dispossession but also evolve their strategy in the context of adivasi consciousness. The authors have …
Herbert Macaulay As The Father Of Nigeria’S Nationalism: A Historical Misnomer And Misogyny Regarding The Role Of Igbo Women In The Decolonization Process, Uche U. Okonkwo
Journal of International Women's Studies
For over six decades of Nigeria's independence, history has continued to place the role of women in the decolonization process in Nigeria in a state of oblivion. Such obloquy on Nigerian women is the primary concern of this research. This paper raises questions on the impositions of Herbert Macaulay as the father of Nigerian nationalism. Historical evidence points to the direction that King Jaja of Opobo, Nana of itshekiri and Oba Ovaranwen, were the pioneer nationalists because of their resistance struggle against British colonial rule. Yet they were not acclaimed fathers of the nationalist movement in Nigeria. With the huge …
Gender Bias In School Mathematics Textbooks From Grade 1 To 12 In Palestine, Muneer J. Karama
Gender Bias In School Mathematics Textbooks From Grade 1 To 12 In Palestine, Muneer J. Karama
Journal of International Women's Studies
This study examines one of the most important social concepts and perspectives in mathematics textbooks from first grade to 12thgrade in Palestine, which is gender bias. To achieve the goal of this study, the researcher conducted a quantitative and qualitative content analysis of an interval sample of these textbooks. Content analysis is considered an important method for revealing the strengths and weaknesses of curriculum components. The content analysis addressed the use of gender in names, verbs (actions), pictures, pronouns, and professions. The result confirms a male bias in all aspects of the analysis. The same result was confirmed …
The Understanding Of Women’S Movement Activists On The Necessity Of Critical Analysis Of Television Content In Iran, Kobra M. Kachalmi, Lee Yok Fee
The Understanding Of Women’S Movement Activists On The Necessity Of Critical Analysis Of Television Content In Iran, Kobra M. Kachalmi, Lee Yok Fee
Journal of International Women's Studies
Iranian TV tries to legitimize and reinforce sexism and male domination with oppressive gender representation. The current study investigates how critical analysis of media is necessary for Iranian women from the viewpoints of Iranian feminist activists. Using a qualitative approach of semi-structured interviews with 15 Iranian feminist activists, this paper contends that critical reading of media messages is essential for Iranian women. The findings reveal that critical reading of media messages could empower Iranian women to understand how Iranian TV reinforces and naturalizes gender stereotypes and roles. In addition, the Iranian feminist activists believe that because media has a purpose, …

Communal Land Tenure Security For Widows In The Eenhana Constituency Of The Ohangwena Region, Namibia, Ndapewa F. Nakanyete, Romie V. Nghitevelekwa, Mark M. Matsa, John Mendelsohn, Selma Lendelvo, Fanuel Shikale
Journal of International Women's Studies
Namibia is characterized by a history of discriminatory customary practices against women with regards to access to land, rights over land, and security of land tenure. Since independence in 1990, the country has adopted policies and legislative frameworks to bring about gender equality in all spheres of life, including the transformation of land tenure rights. These policies and acts give effect to the constitutional provisions that accord both men and women equal opportunities for access to land, rights over land and security of tenure. Widows are a particularly singled-out social group for legal protection, land security and rights to land …
History And/Through Oral Narratives: Relocating Women Of The 1971 War Of Bangladesh In Neelima Ibrahim’S A War Heroine, I Speak, Sanjib K. Biswas, Priyanka Tripathi
History And/Through Oral Narratives: Relocating Women Of The 1971 War Of Bangladesh In Neelima Ibrahim’S A War Heroine, I Speak, Sanjib K. Biswas, Priyanka Tripathi
Journal of International Women's Studies
In the postmodern era, one of the primary objectives of oral narratives is to tell the untold stories of history. Amidst the allegations that historical representation of war narratives often tends to be gendered and biased, these oral narratives of women offer not only a fresh perspective to the wars like the 1971 war of Bangladesh, Sri Lankan Civil War (1983 – 2009) and Kashmir Insurgency (1989 – Present), but also become their own version of pain, suffering, prejudice, and plight. In that sense, they become the voice of the voiceless, giving the victims a chance to assert themselves, despite …
An Ecofeminist, Comparative Reading Of Moniru Ravanipor’S The Gypsy By The Fire And Ntozake Shange’S Sassafrass, Cypress & Indigo, Elahe Khafi
Journal of International Women's Studies
Binary oppositions are the concepts that graft many approaches like feminism, postcolonialism, ecocriticism, African-American, and zoo-poetics. Considering one race, gender, or nationality as superior is what constitutes the dichotomies like, white/black, man/woman, and European/non-European. Ecofeminism, the focal point of this paper, deals with the connection between the oppression of women and the exploitation of nature. Oppositions such as culture/nature, human/animal, and male/female culminate in a myriad discrimination. Among many writers around the world whose concerns are the marginalized, one African-American and one Iranian female novelist are selected to be surveyed in this study. Both Ntozoke Shange (1948-2018) and Moniro Ravanipor …
Orientalism, Gender, And Nation Defied By An Iranian Woman: Feminist Orientalism And National Identity In Satrapi’S Persepolis And Persepolis 2, Diego Maggi
Journal of International Women's Studies
Marjane Satrapi’s graphic novels Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood (2003) and Persepolis 2: The Story of a Return (2004) —focused on her youth and early adulthood in Iran and Austria— reveal in many ways the conflicting coexistence between the West —Europe and North America— and the Middle East. This article explores feminist Orientalism and national identity in both Satrapi’s works, with the purpose of demonstrating the manners that these comics complicate and challenge binary divisions commonly related to the tensions amid the Occident and the Orient, such as East-West, Self-Other, civilized-barbarian and feminism-antifeminism. In the first part of the …
Who Is Afraid Of ẸfúNṣetáN AníWúRà? Performing Power In Yoruba Masculinist Oligarchy, Omolola A. Ladele, Abimbola O. Oyinlola
Who Is Afraid Of ẸfúNṣetáN AníWúRà? Performing Power In Yoruba Masculinist Oligarchy, Omolola A. Ladele, Abimbola O. Oyinlola
Journal of International Women's Studies
The iconic Yoruba female personage of Ẹfúnṣetán Aníwúrà has, in several studies, been vilified; and at a first glance, it would seem that Akinwunmi Isola’s eponymous protagonist and heroine of that play reinforces the image of a villainous, wicked and self-centred woman. Contextualized within the Yoruba socio-political and economic national narratives of the late18th and early 19th centuries, this image appears both problematic and complexly contradictory. It is therefore useful to appropriately recuperate and verify the status of Ẹfúnṣetán Aníwúrà within the backdrop of Yoruba cultural context. This is illustrated through a feminist re-reading of Ẹfúnṣetán’s actions and …

Early Marriage In Bangladesh: A Cross-Sectional Study Exploring The Associated Factors, Ashis Talukder, Muhammad M. Hasan, Shaharior R. Razu, Zobayer Hossain
Journal of International Women's Studies
This cross-sectional study intends to explore the factors associated with the prevalence of early marriage among female teenagers in Bangladesh. Data from the Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey (BDHS, 2014) were used to meet the study objective. Two binary logistic models were run to estimate the factors that influence early marriage. In Model-I, the covariates were considered in a bivariate setup, and unadjusted odds ratios (UOR) were obtained from Model-II, where all the covariates were taken into account to get the adjusted odds ratio. Results show that the level of education for both females and their partners, religiosity, possession of …
“When A Mother Is Employed, Her Children Suffer”: A Quantitative Analysis Of Factors Influencing Attitudes Towards Women’S Employment And Gender Roles In Rwanda, Nadine Mumporeze
“When A Mother Is Employed, Her Children Suffer”: A Quantitative Analysis Of Factors Influencing Attitudes Towards Women’S Employment And Gender Roles In Rwanda, Nadine Mumporeze
Journal of International Women's Studies
Socialist feminist theory has assumed that patriarchy and capitalism are the main sources of women's limited roles and related attitudes in society. Informed by this theory and using the data from the World Values Survey wave six, this study aimed at analysing the factors influencing individuals’ attitudes towards women’s employment and gender roles in Rwandan society. A hierarchical multiple regression modelling method was used to analyse data through R and SPSS statistics programs. The main findings yielded by three research models show that Rwandans express ambivalent attitudes toward women’s work and gender roles, comprising both traditional and non-traditional attitudes. Women, …

The Canadian extractive company, Greystar (currently known as Eco Oro), provides diverse training and consultancy programs for entrepreneur women, as part of their social responsibility policy. This article reflects on the human talent training experience offered by Greystar in the mining towns of Vetas and California, in Santander, Colombia, from a gender decolonial perspective, and a global understanding of social practices. We followed an interpretive qualitative approach for analyzing data collected from public-dissemination brochures regarding the outreach projects offered by the extractive company, and from semi-structured interviews carried out with the studied population. This article shows how these programs emphasize …
Extending Bell Hooks' Feminist Theory, Hazel T. Biana
Extending Bell Hooks' Feminist Theory, Hazel T. Biana
Journal of International Women's Studies
In Feminist theory: from margin to center, feminist theorist bell hooks questioned the existing feminist discourses during her time by pointing out the lack of a solid definition of feminism and the predominance of white, privileged feminists in the movement. Although several other feminist theorists have made the same criticisms, what sets hooks apart is her invitation to a revolutionary feminist outlook, which uses a pluralistic lens to recognize the absence of oppressed groups and the interrogation of cultural representations. Even before “intersectionality” became a buzzword in feminist circles, hooks has already been talking about the interlocking webs of …
Understanding The Roles Of Women In Boko Haram’S Terrorism, Temitope P. Ola
Understanding The Roles Of Women In Boko Haram’S Terrorism, Temitope P. Ola
Journal of International Women's Studies
Boko Haram’s insurgency has jumpstarted a new concern for regional security in sub-Saharan Africa. While the collaborative response from the countries of the Lake Chad Basin (LCB) is acceptable for the ‘global war against terrorism’ the activities of the terrorist group and the responses they generate have exposed the gender strains within the societies around the LCB. Taking its point of departure in world system theory, the study examines how the role that women play in Boko Haram’s terrorist activities in the LCB can be understood. The study found that women’s participation in Boko Haram’s terrorism may be understood within …

Interpreting As Ideologically-Structured Action: Collective Identity Between Activist Interpreters And Protesters, Mark A. Halley Phd, Nic
Showcase of Faculty Scholarly & Creative Activity
In this paper, I explore the work of the American Sign Language-English interpreters who volunteered in the 1988 Deaf President Now protest (DPN). Drawing from the construct of ideologically-structured action (Dalton 1994; Zald 2000), I frame the interpreters’ decisionmaking throughout the protest, showing how their beliefs about and relationships with deaf people shaped their actions. Further, I argue that the activist interpreters exhibited a collective identity (Polletta and Jasper 2001) with the deaf protesters, despite not being deaf themselves. I also discuss the integral role of interpreters to the protesters’ mission of challenging the existing power structure. To develop my …

Inclusive Audience Analysis And Creating Manageable Content, Carleigh J. Davis, Michelle F. Eble
English and Technical Communication Faculty Research & Creative Works
Over the last 15 years, content management systems have dramatically changed the ways we think about our pedagogical approaches to teaching audience analysis. This is especially true when content may need to be reused in a set of discrete contexts for various audiences. This chapter introduces a heuristic that helps students think about, write, and deliver reusable content. Modeled after Ridolfo and DeVoss’s (2009) concept rhetorical velocity, this heuristic introduces students to both how they must consider primary audiences for the content they develop as well as various stakeholders, possible audiences, and potential contexts where their content needs to be …
Self-Framing Of Women In U.S. Politics On Instagram, Madison Marie Parks
Self-Framing Of Women In U.S. Politics On Instagram, Madison Marie Parks
Theses and Dissertations
This study explored how women involved in U.S. politics visually framed themselves on their Instagram pages. While recent research in political communications examined the use of Facebook and Twitter, few studies assessed Instagram's role in the game of politics. Guided by political and visual framing theories, a quantitative content analysis of Instagram posts (N = 1,947) from women involved in U.S. politics was conducted. This examination allowed for an exploration of how these public figures framed themselves on Instagram and the extent to which they shared personal content, despite their varied involvement in U.S. politics. Results showed that: both Democrat …
