Reclaiming A Multiplying Discipleship: Fostering The Dance Of The Gathered And Sent Church, Matthew Lake
Reclaiming A Multiplying Discipleship: Fostering The Dance Of The Gathered And Sent Church, Matthew Lake
Doctor of Ministry
In the postmodern world, the local church has experienced significant decline as Christendom gives way to a more secular culture. Many shrinking denominational churches have missed imaginative opportunities and practices to produce multiplying disciples. This dissertation explores how declining denominational churches can embrace new opportunities for flourishing in a postmodern context through the development of a culture of multiplying discipleship. History—through examples such as the early church and Wesleyan movements—has shown that multiplying discipleship movements are possible in cultures not familiar with the Gospel. Such movements reveal new possibilities produced through the tension found between more formational offices of teaching, …

Discipleship In A Digital Age: Leveraging Multimodality And Digital Networks, Jennifer Miles
Doctor of Ministry
Advancements in communication technology, particularly since the Internet Age, have impacted culture in several fundamental ways. Cognitive and psychological changes have changed how people seek and understand knowledge. The development of horizontal networks made of both space of places, physical locations, and space of flows, Internet locations,1 has reshaped academic, social, and political spheres. The rise in entertainment to transfer information has shifted society’s focus to one of experience and service in everyday life. These changes have impacted the institutional church through a reduction of individuals self-identifying as Christian and in behaviors traditionally considered Christian.
In response, the church has …
What Forms Of Gratitude Expression Are Most Appreciated? Applications For Christian Leaders, David R. Dunaetz, Peggy Lanum
What Forms Of Gratitude Expression Are Most Appreciated? Applications For Christian Leaders, David R. Dunaetz, Peggy Lanum
Journal of Applied Christian Leadership
Both the emotion and expression of gratitude produce benefits for the person who is thankful, as well as the person being thanked. This study explores the degree to which various forms of gratitude expression are appreciated by those being thanked. In a survey-based study (N=361), costly, private expressions of gratitude were more appreciated by people being thanked than less costly, public expressions. Higher levels of the HEXACO personality traits of conscientiousness and emotionality increased the degree to which people appreciated being thanked. Lower honesty-humility (e.g., narcissism) predicted a greater appreciation of receiving public expressions of gratitude while higher honesty-humility predicted …

The Sage Without A Country: The Political And Literary Life Of Dr. Shih-Shun Liu (劉 師 舜) (1900-1996), Caleb Yung-Jen Liu
History
Shih-Shun Liu was my great-grandfather as well as a diplomat for the Republic of China from the late 1920s until 1958. While his life is relatively left unknown to many historians, his contributions to the Kuomintang are significant and help us to understand the inside workings of the ROC and its diplomacy during this time period. Liu was a beneficiary of the Boxer Indemnity scholarship provided by the United States and made use of his love for education and poetry to pursue a literary career that defined the second portion of his life. Liu’s life as a scholar and diplomat …
Similarities Between The Second Generation Of Female Psychologists And Female Students In Cal Poly’S Child Development Program, Jenny Delk
Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports
This essay aims to uncover the similarities between female students in Cal Poly’s Psychology and Child Development Department and the second generation of female psychologists in American society. The department’s history will be examined in order to establish its importance at Cal Poly, a traditionally vocational institution. Additionally, this essay will consider how female students in the department argued its importance and validity through on campus advocacy and their senior projects. The essay will close with a section detailing faculty perspectives on the validity of psychology and child development as a true science amongst other disciplines at Cal Poly. The …
History 303 Research And Writing In History: Cal Poly History Presented To Professor Andrew Morris California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo A Course Taken In Partial Fulfillment Of My Bachelor Of Arts Degree In History By Victoria Duehring March 13, 2020 The Discovery Of Margaret Chase And Why It Takes A Detective To Learn About Women, Victoria Duehring
Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports
Scholarly work on the experience/erasure of Miss Margaret Chase: first and only female president of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. With the main focus being on difficulties throughout her life, and impact of the male gaze on her legacy: which resulted in an extreme lack of direct primary sources. Through analysis of gender issues during Chase’s presidency and the effect of her erasure on campus it is clear that there is a disadvantage to being a woman in a position of power on Cal Poly’s campus. This disadvantage is chronicled throughout Chase’s life, but also to this day as there …

Court’S In Session: The Development Of Pre-Law Programs At Cal Poly, Megan Hayes
Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports
The American Bar Association, the association which accredits lawyers, allowing them to practice law, does not recommend a specific path or major in preparation for law school. It does, however, recommend taking demanding courses that will foster skills like problem-solving, critical reading, research, etc. So how does one prepare for law school, especially like a Polytechnic School at Cal Poly? When Cal Poly was founded in 1903, it did not even have a pre-law program, let alone any programs in the liberal arts/social sciences area. It was not until the later development of the Political Science Department that pre-law programs …
Cal Poly During World War Ii: Financial Decisions And Campus Life 1943-1945, Clara Juarez
Cal Poly During World War Ii: Financial Decisions And Campus Life 1943-1945, Clara Juarez
Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports
World War II would bring many hardships to the country and the lives of citizens within the United States. Specifically, those of higher education would be greatly impacted. Cal Poly originally had been fortunate enough to not feel these hardships when war initially started. However, due to a huge financial loss; Cal Polys main source of income, the college would be amongst others struggling to maintain normal school operations. Julian McPhee; President of Cal Poly during WWII, would begin to scramble for financial answers; meanwhile, the school’s admissions continued to decline. The explorations of McPhees reactions to the financial distress …

What Didn’T Happen: Analyzing Cal Poly’S Proposed Educational Assistance Program Following The Korean War, Sam Mcclintock
Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports
Following the Korean War, Cal Poly was approached to take part in a program to provide technical education assistance to vocational schools in the Republic of Korea by the newly formed United States Foreign Operations Administration. This paper seeks to analyze that program in the context of Cal Poly’s history, especially in comparison to other international education programs and to other dealings between the University and the United States Government. Although Cal Poly ultimately never took part in the Korea Program, it still provides insight into the college’s priorities and place in the context of US foreign policy in the …

Marketing A College: Cal Poly’S Marketing Evolution From The 1960s-1980s, Tesia Wilson
Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports
The concept of marketing is easily understood today because it is everywhere, but back in the 1950s and 1960s marketing was a relatively new concept. Specifically college marketing, as attending college became more popular from the 1960s to the 1980s. This paper is focused around Cal Poly’s promotional materials including pamphlets, brochures and course catalogs, emphasizing how pictures and words were used to market the school. Through exploration it is clear these materials focused on some majors more than others, specifically agriculture and engineering. From the 1960s to the 1980s, there is a clear change in how marketing became more …

Review Of Margery Post Abbott, Walk Humbly, Serve Boldly: Modern Quakers As Everyday Prophets. San Francisco, Ca: Inner Light Books, 2018., Howard Macy
Quaker Religious Thought
Margery Post Abbott’s book Walk Humbly, Serve Boldly is a substantial book, in both size and content, that explores the experience of prophetic witness, particularly among Friends. Key to understanding this exploration is Abbott’s use of the term “everyday prophets.” She uses the term “to describe all those individuals (and this goes well beyond the Quaker community) who listen for the Holy Spirit to shape them and guide them on a daily basis. … [They are] people who are faithful to the path of truth and love and whose lives project hope and a passion for justice. This path is …

Christian Leaders At Midcareer: Navigating The Opportunities And Challengs In Midlife, Seth J. Nelson
Journal of Applied Christian Leadership
In this article, the author suggests midcareer is a central but transitional season in a Christian leaders’ life-course. During this season, the Lord seeks to bring clarity to, and integration between, the leader's calling as a citizen of the Kingdom of God, the leader’s personal identity as united with Christ, and the leader’s occupation within his or her organization. After proposing a conceptual framework for the experience of midcareer, the author discusses common themes, challenges, and opportunities of “middlescence” (Morison, Erikson, & Dychtwald, 2006), which exist on a continuum from “burning out” on one end to the “sweet spot” of …
