Justice In Exchange: The Difficulty Of Establishing Commensurability In Aristotle’S Nichomachean Ethics, Asher Hilton
Justice In Exchange: The Difficulty Of Establishing Commensurability In Aristotle’S Nichomachean Ethics, Asher Hilton
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
In Chapter 5 of Book V of the Nichomachean Ethics, an analysis of justice in exchange leads Aristotle to conclude that differing things can only be made commensurate in a practical sense. The passage sets up a relationship between association, exchange, equality, and commensurability in market exchange and leaves Aristotle with differing notions of commensurability. Aristotle considers demand (a need for resources) to be a means of resolving the tension; however, this possibility is subject to objections. Aristotle’s analysis of association for exchange is problematic, as is his exchange-equality relationship; examples from economic game theory illustrate the objections to …

“They Didn’T Burn Down Our Spirit”: Heritage Terrorism And The Resurgence Of Black Church Burnings In The Age Of Obama, Jajuan Shonel Johnson
Student Theses and Dissertations
The burning of Black churches motivated by racial hatred has an extensive history in America that persists. Drawing largely from primary resources, the dissertation analyzes the resurgence of Black church fires during both terms of President Barack Obama, the first Black president of the United States. The definition of heritage terrorism is applied to churches intentionally burned, particularly the arsons motivated by hatred. The study examines specific arson cases and explains the implications burnings have on the tangible and intangible heritage of communities impacted. Lastly, the study highlights the courage and resilience of communities that rebuilt in the aftermath of …
Charlie May Simon: Uncovering The Lost Voice Of An Arkansas Author, Aleshia Showen O'Neal
Charlie May Simon: Uncovering The Lost Voice Of An Arkansas Author, Aleshia Showen O'Neal
Student Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation analyzes the life and published novels of noted Arkansas author Charlie May Simon, a woman whose writing career spanned four decades, during which time she remained an Arkansas resident. None of her twenty-nine published novels, biographies, or memoirs remain in print. Although a yearly award was established in 1970 by the Arkansas Department of Education— the Charlie May Simon Book Award— educators and librarians have difficulty obtaining copies of her own writing that set the high bar of excellence each award recipient demonstrates. My purpose in research is to uncover the prose beauty of Charlie May Simon’s writing, …
Cooperative Acceptance And Tabletop Representation: Gender And Sexuality In The Fantasy Tabletop Role-Playing Game Dungeons And Dragons, Renee Pinkston
Cooperative Acceptance And Tabletop Representation: Gender And Sexuality In The Fantasy Tabletop Role-Playing Game Dungeons And Dragons, Renee Pinkston
Student Theses and Dissertations
Gender and sexuality are ‘hot topics,’ often being the center of much debate and discussion. Although seemingly isolated, these subjects are found embedded and woven throughout aspects of culture including games. I argue that games like Dungeons and Dragons have within them core elements related directly to gender and sexuality and that since its creation in 1974, Dungeons and Dragons has evolved from being a game that exhibited both sexism and misogyny into a gaming platform that exhibits an open and accepting view of both gender and sexuality not just within the game but outside of the game in its …
Exposure, Knowledge, And Experience Of Graduate Students In Communication Disorders On Treating Speech/Language Issues In Adults With Neurological Disorders Using Singing-Based Therapy, Tassie Lee Murphree
Exposure, Knowledge, And Experience Of Graduate Students In Communication Disorders On Treating Speech/Language Issues In Adults With Neurological Disorders Using Singing-Based Therapy, Tassie Lee Murphree
Student Theses and Dissertations
There are speech-language pathologists (SLPs) who use singing while in therapy to treat a variety of disorders for adults with neurological disorders. This study was conducted to investigate graduate student exposure to, knowledge of, and experience with utilizing singing in therapy with this population. Specifically, this survey was distributed to first- and second-year graduate students in communication disorders. The survey consisted of both general and specific questions to more effectively analyze the students’ familiarity levels with the topic, overall. The results indicated that the majority of students demonstrated limited knowledge of and exposure to singing in therapy. The students’ comfort …
A Tale Of Two Culpers: Social Context Of Revolutionary Espionage, Kelsey Samantha Deford
A Tale Of Two Culpers: Social Context Of Revolutionary Espionage, Kelsey Samantha Deford
Student Theses and Dissertations
What motivates a person to engage or take part in espionage? Scholars have researched thousands of documents about espionage during the American Revolution, but much of this research remains divided and simplistic. Historians have also examined the Culper Spy Ring, a patriot intelligence gathering network in occupied Long Island and New York. They typically argue how useful the Culper Ring was in assisting rebel efforts. There is social context or a “war of ordeals” in these agent’s lives. Two of these agents, Abraham Woodhull and Robert Townsend, left a trail of their motivations. Letters reveal that both were motivated by …
Arkansas In The African American Imaginary: A Rhetoric Of Place, Carmen Lanos Williams
Arkansas In The African American Imaginary: A Rhetoric Of Place, Carmen Lanos Williams
Student Theses and Dissertations
Due to the history of racism in America, African Americans have always held a conflicted relationship with it. This is true in both regional and local contexts. This study imagines the ways in which African American Arkansans are contributing to the notion of “place” in both real and imagined ways via published fiction, oral histories, and memoirs. The bildungsroman, or coming of age genre, serves to unify seeming disparate genres in the project, as all texts in the study depict growing up in Arkansas. The most comprehensive treatment of Arkansas as a place may be found in Brooks Blevins’s cultural …

Metafiction As Anti-Genre Across Narrative Mediums, Jesse Matlock
Metafiction As Anti-Genre Across Narrative Mediums, Jesse Matlock
Student Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the various functions of self-conscious and self-reflexive narrative such as authorial control over meaning, mutability of history, and ontological exploration/experimentation such as the relationship between fiction and reality. It examines texts from multiple narrative genres and media (novels, comic books/graphic novels, film, and theater) as well as established critical work on metafiction, such as Patricia Waugh’s Metafiction: The Theory and Practice of Self-Conscious Fiction, Robert Alter’s Partial Magic: The Novel as a Self-Conscious Genre, and Linda Hutcheon’s “Historiographic Metafiction” to establish the prototypical characteristics of metafiction. It also discusses the specific ways in which these metafictional practices …

Ustube -- An Exploration Of The Relationship Between Youtube And Influencers, Alex Michie Sanders
Theses and Dissertations
Since YouTube's launch in 2005, it has grown into one of the most visited social media platforms in the world. It launched with the slogan "Broadcast Yourself"with the promise that the content sharing site would allow anyone to post, share, and interact with videos from anyone around the world for free. Many people took advantage of that promise and became Internet celebrities, or "influencers,"in a short amount of time, amassing millions of subscribers and billions of views. The success of these YouTube stars has led them to land roles on TV and in films, launch music careers, write books, and …
Borges, El Escritor Italiano: Precursores Italianos En/Desde Borges, Sara Boscagli
Borges, El Escritor Italiano: Precursores Italianos En/Desde Borges, Sara Boscagli
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The word precursor is a term that suggests something that comes before, that anticipates. However, what would happen if literature (beginning with Borges) would change this concept? The binary canons of before and after would disappear and with them the idea of a chronological literary temporality. As Borges suggests in the essay “Kafka and his precursors”, precursors can be identified due to the existence of Kafka who (as all writers) choose his literary “fathers”. What Borges suggests is that this choice not only modifies the future, but also the past.
To explore this literary and philosophical idea, Borges will be …
The Effects Of Feudalism On Medieval English Mobility: A Biological Distance Study Using Nonmetric Cranial Traits., Jonathan H. Barkmeier
The Effects Of Feudalism On Medieval English Mobility: A Biological Distance Study Using Nonmetric Cranial Traits., Jonathan H. Barkmeier
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Social and environmental factors play a key role in determining biocultural phenomena that can be observed on skeletal populations. Genetic markers in the form of nonmetric traits can help understand underlying questions about population movement and subsequent gene flow. During the medieval period in England, feudalism may have limited migration and created sedentary lifestyles for the peasant class who lived and worked on land owned by the nobility. By using a biological distance model, questions about the interactions between rural and urban populations, as well as the restrictive economic system that was in place during the Middle Ages, can be …

Lydia Cabrera Entre Líneas: Sociolingüística, Etnografía Posmoderna Y Realismo Mágico, Mauricio A. Cabrera
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
A través …
Unwritten Records: Crime And Punishment In Early Virginia, Jessica L. Gantzert
Unwritten Records: Crime And Punishment In Early Virginia, Jessica L. Gantzert
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Crime and punishment are highly racialized aspects of American society, and have been since the beginning. History has consistently focused on wealthy white males, leaving large gaps in our collective understanding of criminality as it applies to poor people and people of color. My thesis discusses how people of Amherst County in Colonial Virginia navigated imprisonment and their positionality. I engage with constructivist and feminist theories to expose silences in archives which hinders deeper understanding of the archaeological record. Though my research, I have been able to find the names of some of the people that were imprisoned, along with …
9/11 Then And Now: How The Performance Of Memorial Rhetoric By Presidents Changes To Construct Heroes, Kristen M. Grafton
9/11 Then And Now: How The Performance Of Memorial Rhetoric By Presidents Changes To Construct Heroes, Kristen M. Grafton
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study is concerned with American presidential rhetoric at the cross-section of hero rhetoric and memorial address. It analyzes presidential memorialization of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. 9/11 is arguably the most significant tragedy in recent American history. The purpose of this study is to identify the type of hero each president since 9/11 has attempted to construct of himself for the public and discuss the rationale behind that hero construction. To complete this objective, I analyze the second 9/11 memorial speech from the presidencies of Bush, Obama, and Trump for hero construction. A close reading examining the …

String Quartet No. 1 "Lanterns", Austin A. Franklin
String Quartet No. 1 "Lanterns", Austin A. Franklin
LSU Master's Theses
String Quartet No. 1 “Lanterns” was inspired by a poem written by the American poet, novelist,
and short story writer Stephen Crane entitled “Each Small Gleam was a Voice”. In my
interpretation, this poem creates a world in which sight and sound are intrinsically linked,
connected by our inability to perceive either independently from the other. Throughout the
poem, Crane continuously creates a world in which sounds are only capable of being described
through the use of color. One line in particular, “Little songs of carmine, violet, green, gold.”, is
repeated several times throughout the poem. In “Lanterns” each of …

The Fantastic Bildwelten Of Wolfgang Harms, Tanya A. Kramer
LSU Master's Theses
Wolfgang Harms is an artist from Nuremberg, Germany, who has not been studied at length in the recent past. This thesis explains why the artist is deserving of study. The first chapter is a biographical introduction to the artist and his early works. The following chapters discuss the importance of Nuremberg and mural painting to Harms. The final chapter will analyze the artist’s place in the historical context of Fantastic Realism and the history of art in general. Overall, the purpose of the thesis is to show how Wolfgang Harms is a unique independent-minded artist, who is deserving of more …

A Different Set Of Rules? Nlrb Proposed Rule Making And Student Worker Unionization Rights, William A. Herbert, Joseph Van Der Naald
Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy
This article presents data, precedent, and empirical evidence relevant to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) proposal to issue a new rule to exclude graduate assistants and other student employees from coverage under the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA). The analysis in three parts. First, the authors show through an analysis of information from other federal agencies that the adoption of the proposed NLRB rule would exclude over 81,000 graduate assistants on private campuses from the right to unionize and engage in collective bargaining. Second, the article presents a legal history from the past half-century about unionization of student employees …
