The Moving Image And The Time Of Prophecy: Trauma And Precognition In L. Von Trier’S Melancholia (2011) And D. Villeneuve’S Arrival (2016), Luca Zanchi
Journal of Religion & Film
Both the deferred recurrence of post-traumatic symptoms and the foresight granted by prophetic vision bring about a disruption of temporality and generate a chronological discontinuity which is often formally rendered as narrative discontinuity. This similarity produces an interpretive ambiguity that is central to the films, Melancholia (2011) by Von Trier and Arrival (2016) by Denis Villeneuve. Both movies begin by hinting at the post-traumatic origin of visions and then gradually shift towards a prophetic explanation. In addressing these two case studies, this article approaches prophecy and its temporality from a narratological perspective, integrating the critical parameters of trauma-theory with the …
The Gaze And A Sufi Ethics Of Vision In Majidi’S The Willow Tree: Form, Meaning, And The Real, Cyrus A. Zargar
The Gaze And A Sufi Ethics Of Vision In Majidi’S The Willow Tree: Form, Meaning, And The Real, Cyrus A. Zargar
Journal of Religion & Film
In his 2005 film The Willow Tree (Bīd-i Majnūn), Majid Majidi offers a complex moral commentary on the faculty of sight. To do so, the filmmaker draws from Sufi theories of gazing, in which desire must be for ultimate meaning (maʿnā), as conveyed through the vehicle of perceivable form (ṣūra), a distinction with both metaphysical and ethical implications. Majidi presents sight, when devoid of contemplation, as a sort of voyeurism, especially in contrast to the privacy and immediacy of speech and especially within the context of the modern city. Moreover, his use of a …
Skyfall: The "Aliens Sequence" In Monty Python's Life Of Brian, Robert Cousland
Skyfall: The "Aliens Sequence" In Monty Python's Life Of Brian, Robert Cousland
Journal of Religion & Film
Despite its brevity and science fiction genre, Terry Gilliam's "aliens sequence" in Monty Python's Life of Brian functions in at least three ways: It is a brilliant parody of Star Wars and other space epics. It addresses concerns that were of profound significance for the religion of Jesus' day and, finally, and it significantly challenges the Christian premise of a divinely ordained purpose underlying Jesus' life.

The Lens Of Truth: A Critical Response To The Role Of Rinehart In Ellison's Invisible Man, Michael Cudmore
The Lens Of Truth: A Critical Response To The Role Of Rinehart In Ellison's Invisible Man, Michael Cudmore
Georgia College Student Research Events
After exploring several different critical evaluations of Ralph Ellison’s novel Invisible Man, I discovered that multiple scholars paint the figure Rinehart in a positive light, believing he represents the benefits and possibility of an African-American man living in an urban environment. Other critics posited that Rinehart serves more as a representation of a lack of morality and the deception of others, but they often only mentioned this point briefly or without substantial supporting evidence. This paper aims to not only argue that Rinehart serves as a more negative figure than many scholars believe, but also to build upon the arguments …

The Relationship Between Child’s Toy Selection and Anger: Then and Now
Female expression of anger has long been stigmatized due to historically, and still presently, strict gender roles. Anger is considered a “masculine” emotion, and women have often been discouraged from crossing that gender line. In a study done by Salerno et al. (2018), undergraduate students rated the effectiveness of both male and female attorneys who presented identical closing arguments. When the closing argument was spoken in an angry tone, the male attorneys were seen as significantly more effective than the women attorneys. When the students described the attorneys after …

Mobile Application For Animal Health: A Design Research In User Interface, Sierra White

Apps function to increase productivity and allow the user to complete tasks conveniently from their mobile device. As a college student who has several pets, I have found that there is no good app on the market which caters to every pet parent’s needs, which forces them to download four or five apps. To combat this problem, FurPaws gives the user a way to document every aspect of their pet’s health and daily routine, as well as providing information on first aid and expert, real-time advice from veterinarians. The E-Vet page is available to guests who have not yet registered, …

Welcome To Gendered Dada, Morgan Drawdy
Georgia College Student Research Events
This paper explores the works of art throughout the Dada art period from three specific artists; Marcel Duchamp, Francis Picabia, and Baroness Else Von Freytag-Loringhoven. It delves deep into the making of the pieces and the influences behind them. The pieces are analyzed through the lens of gender and gender bias that is caused by the changing of societal roles during World War One. Those roles touching on topics such as women entering the work force and the evolution and devolution of the typical masculine role throughout history. The paper is brought together to explore how these societal changes influenced …

Roots Of African American Christianity, Homer Jones
Georgia College Student Research Events
The basis of African American Christianity is influenced by African religion and the Gullah Geechee Corridor. This study is explored in a performance arts structure of choreography and dramaturgy. This is because there is a strong sense of arts presented in Africa as well as African American religion. This research is explored in Crowns by Regina Taylor. Crowns is important for this research because of the African American culture that is presented specifically at Georgia College and State University. Crowns is the first African American musical that emphasizes the idea of black culture and religion and how African religion is …

University Students' Perceptions Of Humor Use By Male And Female Language Teachers In Lower And Intermediate-Level Spanish Classes, Anne-Catherine Jagneaux
LSU Master's Theses
This study explores students’ perceptions of their teachers based upon the teacher’s use of humor. It was guided by the following two research questions: 1) What are students’ overall opinions of the use of humor in the classroom in terms of its effect on the perceived characteristics of teachers?, and 2) Do male and female students perceive humor differently based on the gender of the teacher? Data were obtained to investigate how students view their teachers’ characteristics such as credibility, approachability, intelligence, overall likeability, in relation to their use of humor. The question of gender bias was addressed by investigating …

Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind: Edgar Allan Poe's Use Of Concealment, Alyssa Hubbard
Scholars Week
In his short stories “The Cask of Amontillado,” “The Black Cat,” and “The Tell-Tale Heart,” Edgar Allan Poe uses the act and outcomes of concealment as a way to deal with guilt and introduce consequence. By examining each of these examples, we can see that how and where Poe's narrators hide the bodies of their victims directly impacts their mental health and how quickly their crimes are discovered.
Hawthorne’S Beautiful Women And Hideous Men: Ecofeminism In “The Birthmark” And “Rappaccini’S Daughter”, Olivia Shelton
Hawthorne’S Beautiful Women And Hideous Men: Ecofeminism In “The Birthmark” And “Rappaccini’S Daughter”, Olivia Shelton
Scholars Week
This paper aims to compare Georgiana and Beatrice’s beauty through an Eco-feminist lens. It examines how the men in each story set unrealistic beauty standards for women in order to be dominant. The men use science to create these standards and destroy nature or the women’s natural beauty and they kill them in the process. This paper argues that Hawthorne addresses Eco-feminist ideas within “The Birthmark” and “Rappaccini’s Daughter” through the destruction of Georgiana and Beatrice. The paper includes background information, a definition, and other key ideas involved with Ecofeminism. The paper focuses on the association of men with society …

In this chapter, the authors describe three of the main aspects embroiled in the generation of such artificial Intelligence-crafted——allowing the craftsmanship metaphor—paintings: curation, content, and creation. They illustrate how each step is a rich research field in itself and provide details on specific projects that have been carried out and the ranging variety of tools used. Data-related projects in fine arts usually start with the construction of a data set, which in the humanities might also be referred to as a corpus or collection, depending on the discipline. It is important to note that this first step, the construction of …

A number of women who created children's series came from writing families – generally, mothers and daughters (like the two Elizabeth Stuart Phelpses) or sisters (like Julia A. Mathews and Joanna Hone Mathews). Adelaide F. Samuels and Mrs. S. B. C. Samuels offer a somewhat different example of this category in that they were sisters-in-law rather than biological relatives. Both women wrote professionally for only a short period: Susan Samuels is also among those authors who produced only one series before abandoning the genre. (Adelaide penned two and a standalone sequel.)

Genesis: A False Start, Tate Kollar
Genesis: A False Start, Tate Kollar
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
Genesis is the first book of the Bible. As the starting block for humanity and creation, Genesis holds incredible weight. Genesis is the beginning of God’s foundational text for his people. Intuitively, one would expect the content of the narratives in Genesis to reflect this weight. One would expect models for human behavior. One would think it would be the first step on the path to redemption from the Fall in the garden. One would expect God to help his people in creating safe, efficient, supportive, functional communities and families. Contrary to these expectations, a majority of the Genesis narrative …

The building envelope has become an active element that allows the building to interact with the context of the surrounding environment. The integration of the envelope with architectural design patterns significantly affects the efficiency of the working environment space in the office buildings, where the resulting effect of this integration plays an important role in providing daylighting, visibility and view; which affects the comfort, performance and productivity of users in an office space. This research study aims to identify the physiological and psychological effects on office employees resulting from the integration of the building envelope and openings with one of …

Retrieving Memories Of Alexandria's Past By Revitalizing The Heritage Of Kom El-Dekka, Dina Nassar, Riham Ragheb
Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)
Across the history of dealing with problems of increasing poverty in historic city centers of developing countries, studies have indicated high levels of demand and strong support for urban revitalization projects compared to other solutions such as; relocation or clearance and redevelopment. In such historic inner city centers, heritage can become a driver for development. Revitalization projects that demonstrate a concern for affordability for less wealthy citizens has become the best alternative to meet the needs of the citizens and small businesses in such deteriorated areas in old city centers. Preparing Alexandria for the 21st century has to take into …
Measuring Public Spaces Identity In Jeddah Corniche, Walaa El- Sayed Yoseph
Measuring Public Spaces Identity In Jeddah Corniche, Walaa El- Sayed Yoseph
Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)
Jeddah; as an Arabian city; has a unique inherited social image in its public spaces. Over long generations, Arabs used to head to the deserted areas, away from inhabited zones or along the coastal lines to spend a social time with their families and friends, practicing some outdoor recreational activities, as hunting, barbecuing, or picnicking. This inherited social image moved into open public spaces inside Arabian cities. Architecturally, it is required a delicate design that reflects this unique character and responds to its requirements. Since the 1970s, Jeddah Corniche development is according to universal style, regardless this special character of …
