Cal Poly’s College of Science and Mathematics unveiled a 22’ by 6’foot diversity-themed mural on May 26, 2017 in the main lobby of the Warren J. Baker Center for Science and Mathematics (No. 180). The mural—“Integrated Visionaries”—represents the study and research of science and mathematics while considering themes of inclusivity, diversity and community. It integrates a stylized approach that allows viewers to see themselves in the mural. This catalog is based on the onsite installation and opening reception for the mural in May 2017.

2022 Celebration of Student Scholarship - Poster Presentations

The ultimate goal of the CASPR team is to build a solar powered car to race in the solar car for the Solar Car Challenge Classic Division, and race in a cross-county race or at the famous Texas Motor Speedway. The car must have taillights, blinkers, headlights, and extra suspension. For the fall semester of 2021, we researched different parts and other solar cars to see what would be the best fit most beneficial. We were able to find all the parts needed for the construction of the car. The Solar Car Challenge website provides some resources to make finding …

Marching Straight In Sweden: The Parade Of A Queer Swedish Utopia Or False Hope?, Ainslie Lounsbury Apr 2020

Marching Straight In Sweden: The Parade Of A Queer Swedish Utopia Or False Hope?, Ainslie Lounsbury

Scandinavian Studies Student Award

Sweden is considered to be one of the most open, welcoming countries in the world. Often, the country is viewed as a shining example of inclusion, especially in regards to their support of the LGBTQ+ community. When analyzing various media from the country, however, many questions arise. Are the groups creating these advertisements doing so for the benefit of the LGBTQ+ community? Or are they for boosting sales, tourism, and recruitment? What if these advertisements actually harm the LGBTQ+ community through stereotyping? Through the analysis of Swedish military and corporate images supporting the LGBTQ+ community, Lounsbury explores possible ideas about …

Non-Traditional Church Involvement As A Life-Course Turning Point: Qualitative Interviews With Religious Offenders, William Hunter Holt Apr 2020

Non-Traditional Church Involvement As A Life-Course Turning Point: Qualitative Interviews With Religious Offenders, William Hunter Holt

Dissertations

This research project conducted and then analyzed qualitative interviews from former and current addicts and criminal offenders who are voluntarily participating in the Christian faith at the same non-traditional, Protestant church. An abridged case study of this church is also provided for background and context. Life-course theory and grounded theory are utilized.

Both the offenders and this church were chosen in an attempt to better understand how the offenders’ involvement at this house of worship, along with their faith in general, have impacted them. Obtaining the perspectives of the offender is essential for three reasons. First, qualitative research conducted in …

The National Socialists And How They Ostracized An Entire Population, Kathryn Weber Apr 2020

The National Socialists And How They Ostracized An Entire Population, Kathryn Weber

Geifman Prize in Holocaust Studies

In this paper, I analyze how the National Socialists ostracized the Jews before the start of World War II. I also discuss the importance of teaching students about this topic in US schools in a way that promotes historical inquiry, historical empathy, and critical thinking skills. There is an attached lesson plan that I did with 6th-grade students to provide an example of one way to teach students about the Holocaust. Here is my thesis for the paper:

"By examining laws passed by the Reichstag, the organization of the ghettos and the camps, the German education system, correspondence between …

Sex In The Sanctuary: Art, Faith And Female Sexual Addiction, Katrina Everett

Community Engagement Student Work

Little research has been done on female sexual addiction and even less research exists regarding the intersectional complexities of female sexual addiction for women of faith. Female sexuality has been largely invisible in religious communities and in society. This project endeavored to explore if art could be an appropriate tool to increase the visibility of the experiences of women of faith dealing with sexual addiction. An interdisciplinary mixed medium workshop was curated that encompassed an interactive art exhibition, poetry readings, monologue and open discussion. The goal of the workshop was increase the visibility of the experiences of women of faith …

Minimum Capacity, Sandra Reed Apr 2020

Minimum Capacity, Sandra Reed

Art & Design Student Research

Students in this project were inspired to create an exhibition for which the exhibition venue would be filled to maximum capacity on the night of the reception in April. However, by the time that the students returned from their trip to NYC, it became clear that the COVID-19 pandemic would make that exhibition impossible. In response, while retaining “maximum capacity” as the motivating prompt, the students pivoted and created new work for this zine rather than for a traditional exhibition. By definition, the zine is small yet the students’ work addresses important topics such as infrastructure, possessions, technology, femininity, stereotypes, …
