Saint Patrick: A Hagiographical Study, Molly Kluever May 2019

Saint Patrick: A Hagiographical Study, Molly Kluever

Obsculta

Reflecting on her semester abroad in Galway, Ireland, the author was inspired to write about the conflicting images of St. Patrick’s personal writings and various accounts of his life written by hagiographers in the centuries following his death. This essay is an attempt to articulate the intersection of fact and fiction, and how they play a role in shaping the Irish saint.

Solidarity And Suffering: Liberation Christology From Black And Womanist Perspectives, Kelsi Watters May 2019

Solidarity And Suffering: Liberation Christology From Black And Womanist Perspectives, Kelsi Watters

Obsculta

As an individual without sight, the author is committed to radical acceptance of and liberation for marginalized groups, as well as a commitment to deep solidarity with womanist theology. This piece focuses on a God whom we know, and love is actively, sacramentally, eternally present in Jesus Christ, whose self-emptying reflects radical solidarity with the oppressed. The author seeks to bring to light a Christological perspective that identifies with the marginalized Jesus – namely, black and womanist liberation theology. Black theology centralizes Jesus as Liberator of the oppressed. It is only in solidarity with the oppressed that we will ourselves …

An Unquiet Pedagogy For Unquiet Students: Reducing Anxiety And Depression With Critical Pedagogy, Laine Drew May 2019

An Unquiet Pedagogy For Unquiet Students: Reducing Anxiety And Depression With Critical Pedagogy, Laine Drew

Honors Program Theses and Projects

This project studies critical pedagogy in the writing classroom as a way to support students who struggle with anxiety to be successful, in and out of the classroom, as thinkers, writers, and citizens. I argue that it is important to recognize that educational inequalities and hierarchies contribute to anxiety, and suggest how critical pedagogy (rigorous and critical interrogation of texts and ideas by readers, a community of learners working together to make meaning, and a commitment to action in the world) can reduce anxiety in the school setting, in particular, and set students up for academic success that creates powerful, …

Mixed Reality’S Ability To Craft And Establish An Experience Of Space, Corey Jones May 2019

Mixed Reality’S Ability To Craft And Establish An Experience Of Space, Corey Jones

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

Mixed Reality, when integrated into architecture, will enable open spaces and the perception of the built environment to change rapidly with little physical fabrication.

As architects, we design with a desired experience of space in mind and don’t typically design with a rapidly changing built environment to meet a fluctuating programmatic demand. Theater Program however, often requires such rapid changes to the perceived environment, that is the stage, and is an activator of social interaction based on a shared experience of the performances.

What would be the architectural implications if we were to integrate mixed reality as a factor of …

Making It New And Keeping It Old: Recasting Frameworks And Contexts In Georgia O’Keeffe Studies, Linda M. Grasso May 2019

Making It New And Keeping It Old: Recasting Frameworks And Contexts In Georgia O’Keeffe Studies, Linda M. Grasso

Publications and Research

Three recent Georgia O’Keeffe exhibition catalogues devise new interpretative frameworks and situate O’Keeffe in new contexts that are especially relevant to American Studies scholars interested in visual culture, material culture, gender studies, reception studies, and modernism. One places O’Keeffe in the company of other white women making modernist art in the early decades of the twentieth century; another provides critical interpretations that acknowledge and reject previous views that were skewered by monolithic gender and sexual lenses; and a third moves O’Keeffe into popular culture domains such as fashion, consumerism, and interior design. Raising questions about how curators present and shape …

Mapping Policy Issues: A Simple, Active-Learning Exercise For Critical Thinking, Richard Holtzman May 2019

Mapping Policy Issues: A Simple, Active-Learning Exercise For Critical Thinking, Richard Holtzman

History and Social Sciences Faculty Journal Articles

Many students in my undergraduate American politics courses struggle to see policy issues as complex. Too often, they get stuck making surface-level observations or jumping straight to personal opinions, falling far short of critical thinking. This article introduces an active-learning exercise—situational mapping—that provokes students to recognize and think critically about the complexities of policy issues such as immigration, abortion, campaign financing, and guns. Adapted from a grounded-theory research technique, the goals of this mapping exercise are to (1) help students see policy issues as messy, (2) encourage them to “wallow in complexity” rather than oversimplify, and (3) provoke them to …

Hand Me Downs And Other Stories: A Flash Fiction Study, Sarah Stephen

It includes reflections on technical and creative flash fiction books that discuss what defines the genre and how it is exemplified by specific authors, as well as personal responses on the author’s understanding her own writing process and how she can apply flash fiction conventions to her work. Misogyny, Rape Culture, And The Reinforcement Of Gender Roles In Hbo’S Game Of Thrones, Emma Baumgardner May 2019

Misogyny, Rape Culture, And The Reinforcement Of Gender Roles In Hbo’S Game Of Thrones, Emma Baumgardner

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

In 2011, HBO’s hit series Game of Thrones premiered for the first time, and fans have followed ever since. While the television series is based on author George R.R. Martin’s book series, A Song of Ice and Fire, there are many artistic decisions that have been made while filming the show, many of which have been critiqued as misogynistic, perpetuating rape culture or reinforcing of stereotypical gender roles. This paper aims to bring light to these claims through the usage of the cultivation theory as well as drawing on information gathered from a survey that was distributed online which included …

The Education Of Women Artists In Northern Europe, 1500-1750, Elayna Gladstone May 2019

The Education Of Women Artists In Northern Europe, 1500-1750, Elayna Gladstone

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

During the Renaissance and Baroque periods, art was primarily commissioned by wealthy patrons for the sake of personal or religious use. Eventually, the creation of the genre portrait came about, and art was beginning to serve purposes other than to satisfy the wealthy patron and the church. As art became more recreational and personal to the common person, women began to train in the arts, and were even able to succeed with their own artistic careers in some cases. This paper covers three women artists from the area of Flanders and Germany, and explores the artistic education they received and …

Two Arguments For Extending Legal Personhood To Nature, Hailey Walley May 2019

Two Arguments For Extending Legal Personhood To Nature, Hailey Walley

Honors Theses

This thesis will articulate new sorts of arguments under a legal philosophy framework that I believe can be used to protect the environment, but which also have a chance at convincing a wide range of citizens and politicians. The conclusion for which I will argue is that the United States should extend legal personhood to Nature. I will first provide detailed analyses of two countries that have already extended rights to nature, Ecuador and Bolivia. I will then proceed to compare the two cases and discuss what aspects of their models can and cannot be applied to the United States, …

The Problem With Page To Screen Adaptation: A Case Study Of King Arthur And Tristan And Isolt, Christina Miller May 2019

The Problem With Page To Screen Adaptation: A Case Study Of King Arthur And Tristan And Isolt, Christina Miller

Honors College Theses

The legends of King Arthur and Tristan and Isolt have been popular for centuries, leading to multiple translations and versions of each text. Modern filmmakers have added to this legacy. Though audiences have enjoyed various contemporary film adaptations of these medieval romances, several essential elements are lost while translating the works to screen. This paper identifies a central motif in each work—King Arthur’s Round Table and Isolt’s love potion—that shapes the subsequent love triangle, and by extension, the representation and motivation of honor. While tracing the continued appearance of such components and their importance in the text sources of Geoffrey …

In The Shadow Of Shuri Castle: The Battle Of Okinawa In Memory, Blake Altenberg May 2019

In The Shadow Of Shuri Castle: The Battle Of Okinawa In Memory, Blake Altenberg

War, Diplomacy, and Society (MA) Theses

The memory of the battle of Okinawa was shaped by politics. The memory of the battle for Okinawans emphasizes war crimes committed against them and the devastating impact that was inflicted upon their peaceful island. Their emphasis on sole victimization led to other Okinawan narratives being either downplayed or outright denied. To remove American bases off their island, gain recognition for Japanese atrocities plus reparations, the Okinawans portrayed themselves as a peaceful people that were the sole victims of the battle of Okinawa. The United States glossed over the crimes committed by the Japanese on Okinawa and Asia to use …
