Low-Cost 8mm/Super 8 Film Digitization Using A Canon 9000f Ii Flatbed Scanner And Photoshop: A Case Study, Kenneth Eckert

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

For some fifty years, 8mm/Super 8 movie film was a widespread format for home movies and amateur hobbyists; yet the films and projection or telecine transfer equipment are now aging and obscure, presenting a difficulty for archivists and filmmakers. Online DIY solutions usually involve photographing the film with a DSLR and macro bellows, requiring a high degree of expertise and expense. This case study examines typical problems and proposes a simpler and low-cost solution involving using a Canon flatbed scanner with a transparency adapter and improvised film holder, and more importantly, describes technical solutions and script code to straighten and …

Democracy In America, Office Of Arts + Cultural Programming, Peak Performances At Montclair State University May 2019

Democracy In America, Office Of Arts + Cultural Programming, Peak Performances At Montclair State University

2018-2019 Borders and Boundaries

Romeo Castellucci is one of Europe’s best-known directors, a firebrand known for productions that are as thought-provoking as they are visually stunning. He returns to Peak Performances with the American premiere of “Democracy in America,” freely inspired by the work of Alexis de Tocqueville. Castellucci conjures majorettes who stir the crowd’s enthusiasm for democracy in America, colonial settlers who confound the native Americans, and a puritan couple who struggle to farm a barren land. He asks us to consider the empty promises of a political system steeped in Biblical egalitarianism rather than the concept of tragedy so essential to ancient …

Vile Blood: Hereditary Degeneracy In Victorian England, Dalton Lee Brock May 2019

Vile Blood: Hereditary Degeneracy In Victorian England, Dalton Lee Brock

Theses and Dissertations from 2019

During the late 1800s, the people of England grew anxious about hereditary degeneracy. That anxiety was rooted in the medical literature of the Victorian period. Nature predetermined individuals to be either healthy or unhealthy. Unhealthy individuals were marked by degenerative mental or physical characteristics such as epilepsy. Medical professionals, including Henry Maudsley, emphasized reversion and its hereditary nature as a threat to individuals and society. All based their works and arguments on Charles Darwin’s idea of inheritance. Darwin, in turn, had adopted and modified Lamarckian inheritance to make up for the absence of an inheritance principle in his theory of …

This phenomenological research study was conducted using two focus groups divided homogeneously into one Black focus group and one White focus group. The Black focus group consisted of three Black females and two Black males. The White focus group consisted of six White females. Environmental Data Visualizations: Opportunities For Technical Communication Research, Alissa Schmidt May 2019

Environmental Data Visualizations: Opportunities For Technical Communication Research, Alissa Schmidt

Technical Communication Capstone Course

Environmental issues touch nearly every field. Technical communication researchers have advocated for multidisciplinary environmental communication research to effectively address the depth of environmental issues and speed at which environmental issues evolve. Visuals are often used in environmental communication to help clarify complex information. Using a multidisciplinary approach, the author utilizes secondary research to answer the question, ‘how do data visualizations support environmental communication?’ This research illustrates the value of using environmental data visualizations to add credibility and to facilitate interpretation within environmental communication. Alignment among disciplines, however, is limited in other attributes of environmental data visualizations such as representing temporal …

Performing Arts Labor Unions And Young Industry Professionals: An Analysis Of Current And Future Relations, Caroline Thompson May 2019

Performing Arts Labor Unions And Young Industry Professionals: An Analysis Of Current And Future Relations, Caroline Thompson

Honors College Theses

This thesis surrounds the evolving topic of unionization, particularly within the performing arts industry. As trends and regulations develop that tend away from labor organization, with an increase in non-Equity professional opportunities and the enforcement and growth of legislation such as Janus vs. AFSCME and state-by-state right-to-work laws, unions such as the Actors’ Equity Association (AEA) have more reason to market themselves than ever before. This thesis aims to examine the relationship between AEA and young theatre industry entrants, aged 18-25. The study, furthermore, employs an in-depth analysis of the AEA’s social platforms, with particular focus on Instagram, Twitter and …

‘Yellowface’: An Exploration Of Hollywood’S Film History With The Yellow Race, Kelly Ng

Honors College Theses

This study explores the history behind Hollywood’s relationship with the depiction of Asians and Asian Americans in film. Through tracking examples of Hollywood’s use of yellowface and whitewashing in movies from the 1920s into modern day, the study explores the historical and financial reasons behind controversial casting decisions, and how they affect the perceived image of Asians in America. In exploring the quantitative aspect, three films created within the last five years that were known to have participated in whitewashing were chosen and analyzed critically and financially. The data from these three movies were then used in comparison to Crazy …

Multilingual Writers And Online Writing Instruction: Expanding Our Theoretical And Instructional Frameworks, Mariya V. Tseptsura May 2019

Multilingual Writers And Online Writing Instruction: Expanding Our Theoretical And Instructional Frameworks, Mariya V. Tseptsura

English Language and Literature ETDs

This dissertation is based on a year-long mixed-methods study of linguistically diverse students in one online composition program. It focuses on the experiences of students and instructors from 27 online sections of first and second-year college writing courses. Using student and instructor surveys and interviews, it analyzes how second language writers’ success was affected by the online environment, especially by the issues of technology and digital divide, students’ online identity construction, and the lack of authentic online classroom learning communities. The manuscript provides a broader overlook of students’ experiences across linguistic backgrounds and uses four case studies to offer a …

The Unfolding Argument: Why Iit And Other Causal Structure Theories Cannot Explain Consciousness, Adrian Doerig, Aaron Schurger, Kathryn Hess, Michael H. Herzog

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

How can we explain consciousness? This question has become a vibrant topic of neuroscience research in recent decades. A large body of empirical results has been accumulated, and many theories have been proposed. Certain theories suggest that consciousness should be explained in terms of brain functions, such as accessing information in a global workspace, applying higher order to lower order representations, or predictive coding. These functions could be realized by a variety of patterns of brain connectivity. Other theories, such as Information Integration Theory (IIT) and Recurrent Processing Theory (RPT), identify causal structure with consciousness. For example, according to …

Breath: Capturing Energetic Forms In Pottery, Raymond Brown May 2019

Breath: Capturing Energetic Forms In Pottery, Raymond Brown

Honors Theses

As a Bachelor of Fine Arts candidate with an emphasis in Ceramics, the culmination of my undergraduate education was a formal showing of my work at the Gallery 130 in Meek Hall at The University of Mississippi, Oxford Campus from April 1, 2019 to April 5, 2019. I chose to make pieces of functional, utilitarian pottery with the intent of providing the user with an entrance into a memorable and contemplative experience. Taking influence from historical slipware mark-making - especially German Pennsylvanian Tulipware, I work to craft pieces that are inviting, generous, and strong. Both my show and written thesis …

Faculty Expectations For Writing At The Postgraduate Level In A College Of Dental Medicine, Linnette L. Dobbs-Fuller

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

Expectations for writing at the graduate level are high, yet research reports that many graduate academic writers find the process difficult and tend to struggle with writing. Institutions of higher education have focused on addressing writing at the undergraduate level but have devoted little effort to addressing the specific writing needs of graduate students, particularly in the health sciences. This research addresses this gap in the Health Sciences. This research includes interviews with twelve faculty members in the College of Dental Medicine at Nova Southeastern University about their expectations for writing at the postgraduate level. The study was not only …

Wish You Were Here, Janie Stamm, Janie I. Stamm

Graduate School of Art Theses

The State of Florida is under threat from the effects of climate change. Rising sea levels are creeping up on to Florida’s coast, eroding the beaches and encroaching on heavily populated cities. Over my lifetime I will watch the water spill over the streets of my home town. I will watch the water flood the Everglades, pushing saltwater into freshwater habitats. I will watch the water begin to drown the state, taking Florida’s many little known histories along with it. This thesis serves as a document of Floridian life during the Anthropocene.

Within this thesis, I tell the story of …

Future-Relics: Monumentalizing Afro-Caribbean Identity, Greg Bailey May 2019

Future-Relics: Monumentalizing Afro-Caribbean Identity, Greg Bailey

Graduate School of Art Theses

Abstract

The use of monuments as future-relics to validate and preserve the identity of Afro-Caribbean people within the Anglophone Caribbean is the premise for the conceptual and physical development of my studio practice. My dissertation is about this practice and how the art work that I make, function in the way they are intended. The work monumentalizes Black identity in an effort to mirror the significance and resilience of the Black self within the Caribbean; a space that was created by Europeans to enrich their respective Empires. I put forward the use of established canonical art practices as a methodology …

Its Skin Is My Skin, Bryan Page May 2019

Its Skin Is My Skin, Bryan Page

Graduate School of Art Theses

This text examines the complexity of attempting to empathize with bodies that are vastly othered from my own. This broad yet nuanced subject crosses epistemological boundaries and complicates the dualities between both the mind and body, and between the corporeal and the virtual. My desire to better understand the conditions of another’s experience originates from a painful traumatic loss which caused me to feel isolated and incomplete. In response to this suffering, I long to emotionally connect with other beings and create artwork that attempts to bridge the qualia of individual experience.

I am interested in the capacity (or lack …

Service-Learning: Effectively Transitioning Students Into The Workplace, Rachel B. Bean May 2019

Service-Learning: Effectively Transitioning Students Into The Workplace, Rachel B. Bean

2019 Symposium

Service-learning is a method of learning that is meant to integrate the needs of the community with the academic curriculum of the students. This method allows for the work of the students, emerging professionals, to be used outside of the school, serving as a test of the skills that students may have only used in a school setting. Students are assigned the task of completing a project for a community organization who is without the resources to complete the project. Matching students who need experience with community organizations who are in need of professional services is an effective method of …

Code-Switching In A Bilingual Workplace, Montserrat Ricossa May 2019

Code-Switching In A Bilingual Workplace, Montserrat Ricossa

Honors Program: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

Bilingual people often find themselves in a situation where they switch from one language to another. As with the number of Spanish speakers exponentially increasing in the United States, “code-switching” within Spanish and English is more noticeable within work spaces. When and where does code switching occur? Why does it occur? And what does it mean about the work environment? This essay will argue that code switching can be used within any environment, regardless of class or education. First, it’s important to know the history of code switching and how it differs from Spanglish. “In-groups” can be formed with basic …

Manuscript Collection Finding Aids

Finding aid, scan and typescript (Click on "Additional Files" below) for Manuscripts Small Collection 3417. Letter, 12 December 1824, of John Edwards, Lexington, Kentucky to George W. Williams, Paris, Kentucky. The former U.S. senator offers to discuss the terms on which Williams is to hire out slaves for Edwards’s factory business, but declines his request to train them in cigar-making. He also reports on his law studies, his hopes for financial success, and on a recent visit to Frankfort, Kentucky, where he found state legislators to be “mere factionists,” “without intelligence, without principle, dignity, [or] virtue.”
