Women Artists Shows·Salons·Societies: Towards A Global History Of All-Women Exhibitions, Catherine Dossin, Hanna Alkema May 2019

Women Artists Shows·Salons·Societies: Towards A Global History Of All-Women Exhibitions, Catherine Dossin, Hanna Alkema

Artl@s Bulletin

The Women Artists Shows·Salons·Societies project was launched in 2017 as a collaboration between Artl@s and AWARE. Combining AWARE’s ambitions to restore the presence of 20th-century women artists in the history of art, and Artl@s’s desire to provide scholars with the data and tools necessary to question the canonical art historical narratives through quantitative and cartographic analyses, we decided to work on group exhibitions of women artists.
Our first ambition is to build a community of scholars and work together to develop a common terminology and even possibly a common and consistent methodology to study these events, because the ones used …

Epistemic Inclusion And The Argument From Circumspection, James Scott Johnston May 2019

Epistemic Inclusion And The Argument From Circumspection, James Scott Johnston

Democracy & Education

In this response to Martin's "Should Deliberate Democratic Inclusion Extend to Children?" I examine Martin's comments against the "argument from circumspection," which is dubious regarding the claims children make to change democratic policies and procedures. I explain there are good reasons for being circumspect. One of these concerns the need for all in public discourse to supply not just claims but reasons and to have both these claims and reasons adjudicated in the logical space of reasons. Children, as with all who practice public discourse, must have their claims and reasons assessed for these to be admitted as candidates for …

Is Reasonableness An Aim Of Early Childhood Education? A Response To “Preschool As A Wellspring Of Democracy”, Christopher Martin May 2019

Is Reasonableness An Aim Of Early Childhood Education? A Response To “Preschool As A Wellspring Of Democracy”, Christopher Martin

Democracy & Education

Erickson and Thompson articulate and defend reasonableness as an important civic educational aim for early childhood education. In this response, I argue that further clarity regarding the nature and scope of "reasonableness" as an educational concept or idea is needed. Is such a concept fundamentally political, or does it capture a broader notion of educational value? My view is that, from an educational point of view, the need for reasonable deliberation in plural societies makes salient that there are certain situations that mature moral agents should be prepared to handle (i.e., conflict about basic political matters). But this is merely …

Lesbianism, Feminism, And The National Women's Conference Of 1977: A Turning Point, Diane Perrault May 2019

Lesbianism, Feminism, And The National Women's Conference Of 1977: A Turning Point, Diane Perrault

Augsburg Honors Review

The decade of the 1970s proved to be an eventful time for American women. For those who supported the movement to increase women's rights, progress finally seemed possible. Advancements such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Act, Title IX, the Supreme Court's decision in Roe v. Wade, the opening of battered women's shelters, and the increased number of organized groups that encouraged and assisted women all gave hope to ferninists. While much more needed to be done, women had taken some steps forward. ln November of 1977, a conference took place in Houston, Texas to provide Americans with an opportunity to …

Defining Success In Service-Learning, Vikram N. Gill May 2019

Defining Success In Service-Learning, Vikram N. Gill

2019 Symposium

Service-learning allows students to interact with and support their local community while advancing necessary skills in their given field, in this case, Technical Communication. The potential benefits of service-learning include work experience for students, a dynamic and untraditional teaching experience for instructors, and the community partners gain as much, if not more, then they would from traditional, non-learning community service. However, these benefits are often incremental. For example, the community partners may only gain the additional human resources of working with students and possible exposure for their brand. Any larger or long-term goals may not be met in the short …

Dancing Around A Memory, Tyler Lovie, Bailey Erwin, Aislinn Williamson May 2019

Dancing Around A Memory, Tyler Lovie, Bailey Erwin, Aislinn Williamson

Symposium Of University Research and Creative Expression (SOURCE)

Sometimes music speaks to you. The words and rhythm it presents translates into physical communication. The story is told in a vulnerable way that elicits how each individual in the audience can relate it to their own life. As choreographers, we enjoyed exploring our individual approaches and interpretations to the movement dynamics and how they balanced each other. At times we went for a literal translation of movement while at other times abstracted the lyrics. Key words triggered key phrases of movement and sometimes the literal movements reinforced the statement. The goal was that the movement and music blend together, …

Art As A Collective: Common Ground, Katelyn Stewart May 2019

Art As A Collective: Common Ground, Katelyn Stewart

Symposium Of University Research and Creative Expression (SOURCE)

In the modern day of our busy lives, we often forget the integral role art plays in human life. Through art, we are reminded and forced to reflect on our commonalities and past experiences. As artists, we have the power to elicit emotional response and reflection. As an audience, we have the responsibility to ourselves to take the time to listen. Art comes in many equally powerful forms, but dance has the unique ability to intertwine art forms into one collective piece of work. To demonstrate this concept we will examine the student choreographed piece, “Common Ground”. This piece follows …

Live Music In Musical Theatre, Kali Abrams May 2019

Live Music In Musical Theatre, Kali Abrams

Symposium Of University Research and Creative Expression (SOURCE)

My project is about live music in musical theatre, why we are slowly seeing less of it, and what we can do differently to bring them back on stage. Why this is important is because this takes away jobs from musicians who are orchestra players. This is also important because music has a big impact on a lot of people emotionally and there is a difference between hearing music that is prerecorded and music that is being performed live in front of an audience. I want to present my ideas on what changes we can make that can be beneficial …

Bring The Arts Together, Jessica Graham May 2019

Bring The Arts Together, Jessica Graham

Symposium Of University Research and Creative Expression (SOURCE)

Art is such a huge and impactful part of society, it sparks creativity, joy, and wonder into the lives of everyone. Art is categorized into different groups: Performing, Visual, Music and writing. What if we combined these four to create a beautiful message and work of art? The four genres of art were brought together, to produce one cohesive work of art. With movement and music inspired by a photograph and a poem, the poetry was brought to life. This powerful piece will convey the story behind the poetry in visual manner.

Winner, Outstanding Creative Expression Presentation/Performance, College of Arts …

How I Organized A Music Festival At Cwu: Networking, Budgets, Artistry, Peregrine Spane

Symposium Of University Research and Creative Expression (SOURCE)

Through setting up a music festival at Central Washington University I observed a need for independent music in Ellensburg, closer gender parity in regard to event line-ups, and how in-depth research in policy, budgets, networking, and inclusion would make this possible. In this presentation I will be describing my vision, explaining logistics, and reflecting on lessons learned and where to go in the future.

Exploring Online Art: Youtube, Libby Akin May 2019

Exploring Online Art: Youtube, Libby Akin

Symposium Of University Research and Creative Expression (SOURCE)

Social media has become a predominant feature in contemporary culture and it is increasingly important that scholars assess the impact and implications of its many facets. As online sharing tools like YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and others, continue to evolve, so does the way we interact with, and manipulate, these platforms – as complex tools, allowing us to freely share, create, and connect with one another. Current scholarly analysis of social media platforms, internet communities, and online content creation fails to include the perspective of the younger generation who grew up heavily influenced by social media content. While there is ample …

(Re)Insurgent Ecologies: Dwelling Together Between Queasy Worlds, Kirsten Elizabeth Mundt May 2019

(Re)Insurgent Ecologies: Dwelling Together Between Queasy Worlds, Kirsten Elizabeth Mundt

American Studies ETDs

Discourses that construct the “self” as something to be fixed, or made whole, chart a retreat from relational ecosystems back to the individual, reinforcing colonial politics rooted in bounded individualism. This project animates an ontological, relational framework that, in detaching from liberal humanist discourses of healing and “self,” makes affective links from autopoietic frameworks for healing and survival to de-colonial, sympoieitic concerns for expanded kinship. New meanings and attachments are forged within queasy border zones of incommensurability, toggling between the particular and the universal, between desires for solidarity and recognition that colonial violences continue to be unequally distributed and borne. …

Through The Looking Glass: Marie Antoinette, The Mafia And The Buddha, Craig G. Foisy May 2019

Through The Looking Glass: Marie Antoinette, The Mafia And The Buddha, Craig G. Foisy

Theses and Dissertations

Through the Looking Glass: Marie Antoinette, the Mafia & the Buddhais a short documentary film that recounts six chapters from the autobiography of Marie Antoinette. No, not that last Queen of France who got her head chopped off. This Marie Antoinette lives in Woodstock, NY (“but I do like cake!” says Marie from inside her shop). And yes, Marie Antoinette is her real name. She is 78 years old and she sells what she calls “wearable art” out of a ramshackle and overstuffed boutique in town. Marie is facing the possible closure of her shop: her 100-year-old …
