“‘The Paternal Care Of A Patriot Legislature’: Legislative Instructions, Rhetorics Of Representation, And The Contested Boundaries Of The Political Nation In Revolutionary War-Era Ireland, 1779-1785”, Ian Mclaughlin May 2019

“‘The Paternal Care Of A Patriot Legislature’: Legislative Instructions, Rhetorics Of Representation, And The Contested Boundaries Of The Political Nation In Revolutionary War-Era Ireland, 1779-1785”, Ian Mclaughlin

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This paper revisits a long-neglected controversy over the use of legislative instructions during the Irish Free Trade crisis and explores its impact on the debate over Parliamentary reform in the first years of Grattan’s Parliament. I argue that the episode exposed significant tension between the Parliamentary and popular wings of the Patriot movement—one that most accounts of this era fail to note—while also leading to a major rethinking of traditional notions of representation. Importantly, Irish constituents went beyond defending their simple right to author instructions (as their American and English counterparts had done before), instead advancing them as a novel …

Climate Control In The Face Of Climate Change: Reducing Carbon Footprints In Museums, Felicity Bennett May 2019

Climate Control In The Face Of Climate Change: Reducing Carbon Footprints In Museums, Felicity Bennett

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

With mounting pressures to decrease carbon emission and the growing scarcity of funds, museums must look at their current practices. The standards for climate control in museums are based on challenges museums face in the early twentieth century and relied on limited information and technology. As museums begin to face new challenges due to climate change, the old standards must be reevaluated. Most museums rely on a Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system to maintain strict set-points, however, such systems are expensive and energy intensive. This limits their availability to small and historical museums that do not have the …

Volunteer Women: Militarized Femininity In The 1916 Easter Rising, Sasha Conaway May 2019

Volunteer Women: Militarized Femininity In The 1916 Easter Rising, Sasha Conaway

War, Diplomacy, and Society (MA) Theses

Women were an integral part to the Easter Rising, yet until recently, their contributions have been forgotten. Those who have been remembered are often women who bucked conservative Irish society’s notions of femininity and chose to actively participate in combat, which has led to a skewed narrative that favors their contributions over the contributions of other women. Historians and scholars favor these narratives because they are empowering and act as clear foils to the heroic narratives of the male leaders in the Easter Rising. In reality, however, most of the women who joined Cumann na mBan or worked for the …

Samuel Johnson And Thomas Jefferson: Their Contradictory Lockean Responses To The Legality Of The American Revolution, Joshua Wright May 2019

Samuel Johnson And Thomas Jefferson: Their Contradictory Lockean Responses To The Legality Of The American Revolution, Joshua Wright

Honors Program Theses and Projects

John Locke and his Second Treatise of Government (1690), had a major intellectual impact on political controversies surrounding the American Revolution. Although later historians tended to focus on proponents of the American Revolution from the American perspective like Thomas Jefferson, noteworthy opponents of colonial rebellion like Samuel Johnson had very much the same admiration for John Locke’s seminal ideas regarding human equality and individual liberty. An examination of the contrary perspectives on Locke and revolution taken by both of these writers sheds crucial light on conflicting legal assumptions surrounding the creation of the United States. Both writers were scholars of …
