Gaming In Britain 1900-1939: ‘I Have Got A Good Following. I Have Now A Duke And An Earl. In Fact I Have The Cream Of Society.’, Seamus M G Murphy Dr

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking

Gaming, the organisation of Banker’s games for profit, in Britain prior to the Second World War has largely been ignored by academics and historians. There has been an assumption that gaming was conducted at such a small scale that it was either not worthy of research, or, that there was not enough evidence to support specific analysis.

This paper will attempt to dispel the above academic myth utilising contemporary press coverage and archive material which will illustrate a vibrant, but illegal gaming industry. In fact, gaming during this period formulated in the minds of the authorities the need for substantial …

The Change And Stability Of Moral Discourses And Practices Of Gambling And Tobacco Smoking In Finland, Sweden, And Germany, Riitta Matilainen May 2019

The Change And Stability Of Moral Discourses And Practices Of Gambling And Tobacco Smoking In Finland, Sweden, And Germany, Riitta Matilainen

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking

The presentation deals with comparative research on two morally-laden consumption phenomena (gambling and tobacco smoking) that have been differently morally (re)-framed in the course of the 20th century and in the 2000s. Whereas the prevalence of tobacco smoking in Western countries has dropped dramatically over the last few decades and tobacco smoking has become a deprecated consumption habit closely linked to lower-educated classes gambling has been tamed, legalized and made acceptable to all the classes and both men and women and gained in popularity. The roles of these two phenomena have changed: gambling has become almost ubiquitous whereas smoking is …

Bolivia: Subaltern Politics In The Age Of The New Latin American Left Participation & Representaiion, Annika Gunderson May 2019

Bolivia: Subaltern Politics In The Age Of The New Latin American Left Participation & Representaiion, Annika Gunderson

Augsburg Honors Review

Through the voices of Bolivian women's organizations, testimonios [testimonials] deliver the message of many: the many who struggle against hierarchy and the status quo in order to organize, the many who seek to form a more representative, inclusive and deliberative State, and the many who, even centuries after the Spanish conquest, continue experiencing both external and internal colonization. A collective Bolivian action, encompassing both distinct and mutual identities, is manifested through these testimonios that serve to amplify the voices of the people. Using the land as a metaphor, the plights of many Bolivian women are explored.

The Power Of Narratives: Purple Hibiscus And Nigerian Culture, Danielle Cifonie

Augsburg Honors Review

In order to understand a nanative such as Purple Hibiscus to its fulI capacity, the relationship it has to the culture it comes from must be recognized. Narratives have the capacity to reflect the culture from which they are derived, as well as repair and transform that culture.

The Rhetoric Of Public Support And The Foundations Of Educaiion In Montana, Micah Everson May 2019

The Rhetoric Of Public Support And The Foundations Of Educaiion In Montana, Micah Everson

Augsburg Honors Review

In 2005, the Supreme Court of Montana presented its final and unanimous opinion in the case of Columbia Falls Elem. School Dist. No. 6 v. State. A public coalition thus forced the state to acknowledge problems in its educational system and to work to- wards fixing them. This public interest in education in Montana is not a recent phenomenon.

Women And Men's Hair In Film Noir, Rebecca Reilly May 2019

Women And Men's Hair In Film Noir, Rebecca Reilly

Augsburg Honors Review

Here, the dynamics of manipulation in a few of these dramas will be explored through material clues of class and gender norms. Relationship dynamics in films, particularly in those of manipulation in film noir, are codified in hundreds of ways, so objects, shadows, and songs stand in for what characters lack and long for. Hair is one coded object that is taken for granted and yet tells many stories. In film noir, it tells tales of classiness, allure, age, and the ubiquity of mundane social norns in hairstyling: self-manipulation for self-presentation. Hair is both a body part and a tangible …

Self-Made Sorcerer: The Modernization Of Merlyn In Jack Whyte's The Camuhod Chronicles, Meghan Hekker May 2019

Self-Made Sorcerer: The Modernization Of Merlyn In Jack Whyte's The Camuhod Chronicles, Meghan Hekker

Augsburg Honors Review

When Geoffrey of Monmouth put his pen to paper to record the King Arthur legend as a part of his The History of the of Kings of Britain, he brought to life for the first time since the old Welsh Legends the character of Merlin. But Merlin's development did not stop there. In version after version of the Arthurian legend he continued to appear, taking on many roles, from tutor to madman, but always maintaining an essential Merlin character of magic, wisdom, and power. One modern author who uses Merlin as a significant character in his re telling of the …

The Grand Illusion: The Adventurs Of Hucklebarry Finn And Samuel Clemen' Masterful Ruse, Molly Dunne May 2019

The Grand Illusion: The Adventurs Of Hucklebarry Finn And Samuel Clemen' Masterful Ruse, Molly Dunne

Augsburg Honors Review

Among the many, great works of American literature, it is indisputably The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn that most widely and firmly secures its place within the American canon. Fathers buy the adventure novel for their sons, schoolteachers read it to their students, undergraduates write term papers about it, and adults continually return to it, if only for the nostalgia of their youth. And yet, for the astute reader, a number of problems appear within this "greatest of children's books" (Harper & Brother's 8), namely the anticlimactic and entirely unsatisfactory d6- nouement, that seem to challenge the very meaning of Mark …

Missing In Action? Electronic Gaming Machines In Gambling Studies Research, Fiona J. Nicoll Dr, Mark R. Johnson Dr, Zachary S. Palmer Mr

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking

In the past thirty years casinos across the world have become dominated by the rise of “electronic gaming machines” (EGMs). Expanding with tremendous speed, this technology has arguably become the dominant form of non-online gambling around the world at time of writing (DeMichele, 2017; Schwartz, 2018). EGMs are also noted as being one of the most harmful forms of gambling, with significant numbers of players betting beyond their financial limits (MacLaren et al, 2012; Stewart & Wohl, 2013), spending a disproportionate amount of time playing (Cummings, 1999; Ballon, 2005; Schüll, 2012; cf. Dickerson, 1996), becoming disconnected from the world outside …

Female Leadership In Gaming: Where Are They & Where Are They Missing?, Toni Repetti, Shekinah Hoffman May 2019

Female Leadership In Gaming: Where Are They & Where Are They Missing?, Toni Repetti, Shekinah Hoffman

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking

Women account for over half the gaming workforce, but there is still a gap in leadership. Men continue to dominate casino executive and board positions and this is not representative of the front-line workforce. This presentation uses a database of 10, 950 management positions in 972 United States casinos to evaluate the facts, not perceptions. The database consists of 567 commercial and 405 Native American casinos, which are evaluated separately and in combination. Results show women hold 35.5% of manager and above positions when evaluated overall, but there is a significant difference when evaluated by type of operations. Commercial casinos …
