Lebensborn Mothers: The Women Of The Thousand-Year Reich, Zachary Herzog, Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Kelling Jun 2019

Lebensborn Mothers: The Women Of The Thousand-Year Reich, Zachary Herzog, Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Kelling

Journal of Undergraduate Research

There have been few, if any, events during the 20th century that have drawn more interest from philosophers and historians than those leading up to and culminating in the Second World War. Consequently, much has been said already concerning the aims of the Third Reich. Yet, while there is an increasing amount of literature reflecting upon numerous aspects of the period, the literature surrounding the highly secretive Lebensborn (“Fount of Life”) organization remains somewhat thin. In fact, despite there being thousands of men, women, and children involved in the eugenics experiment, much of what is now known of the Lebensborn …

Fear, Death, And Being-A-Problem: Understanding And Critiquing Racial Discourse With Heidegger’S Being And Time, Jesús H. Ramírez Jun 2019

Fear, Death, And Being-A-Problem: Understanding And Critiquing Racial Discourse With Heidegger’S Being And Time, Jesús H. Ramírez

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

I use Heidegger’s Being and Time to understand and critique racial discourse, but to also determine Heidegger’s reach into issues like racial identity. I start by examining how his introductory statements in Being and Time on the term “existentiell” suggest a path towards a conception of identity. I then go into how a racial identity could, through his terminology, be conceived as what I call a “fear existentiell.” I demonstrate how society assists the individual in maintaining a racialized existence that is embedded in fear. I move toward an examination of Heidegger’s three concepts of death to demonstrate how two …

Young Adults' Problems Reflected In Contemporary Literature, Ijobat Juraeva Teacher Of Linguistics And Literary Studies Department Jun 2019

Young Adults' Problems Reflected In Contemporary Literature, Ijobat Juraeva Teacher Of Linguistics And Literary Studies Department

Philology Matters

The problems of young people attract the scholars of different spheres, and literature inparticular. Young people were depicted under the influence of psychological, social and economic situations. The 20th century literature pays more attention to the psychological aspects of young people’s development. In previous studies on young adults’ literature, different social aspects have been found to be related to the development of young people’s psyche. However, not enough attention has been paid to an individual as the part of the whole social strata. Early example sof research into young adults’ literature include Ya. N. Zasurskiy, A.S. Mulyarchik, T.Morozova.Only in the …

Philology Matters

The article deals with the comparison of attributive relations in the Russian and Uzbek languages. The characteristic features of the grammatical way of interpreting determinative relations in the compared languages and their use by pupils in their speech are analyzed. It is indicative that for the correct use of definitive relations in speech and in the formation of sociolinguistic competence, the deepening of the motivation to learn Russian and its constructions is facilitated by textual regional material of national importance, and considered not only as a unit of education, but also as the main way of organizing educational material lesson. …

Uzbekistan Mod Foreign Language Aptitude Test: A Critical Evaluation, Ilya Zverev Head Of The English Language Department

Philology Matters

Globalization has entailed a growth in impor-tance of the second/foreign language teachingand learning all over the world with the numberof both voluntary and involuntary language learn-ers increasing on daily basis. There is, however,a widely attested discrepancy in actual resultsachieved by those engaged in second/foreignlanguage learning usually explained by means ofinvocation of a specialized talent that certain in-dividuals have, whilst others lack. Such a talent isthought to be measurable and the results obtainedare regarded as valid predictors of success forintensive foreign language programs. The pres-ent article deals with critical appraisal of one ofsuch instruments in terms of both its theoreticaland practical …

Basic Social Categories: Natural Semantic Meta-Language (Nsm) Approach, Guli Ergasheva Doctor Of Philological Sciences Jun 2019

Basic Social Categories: Natural Semantic Meta-Language (Nsm) Approach, Guli Ergasheva Doctor Of Philological Sciences

Philology Matters

The study deals with the NSM analysis, developed by A. Wierzbicka, and its essence to develop the prototype structure of the basic social categories. The hypothesis questioned within this paper: ‘Are the NSM analysis results of the category areprone to determine its prototype?’.The work of Sapir Whorf claims that the linguistic systems of the “pictures of the world” are incompatible with each other, whereas Wierzbicka, on the contrary, asserts that culturally specific concepts are well comparable, as they can betranslated into a universal language that excludesthese differences. Thus, the language of semantic primitives – NSM, demonstrating its expressive capacity, restricts …

Just Do It: The Value Of Being A Doer In Wilkie Collins’S And Charles Dickens’S The Perils Of Certain English Prisoners, Kori Anne Dryer Jun 2019

Just Do It: The Value Of Being A Doer In Wilkie Collins’S And Charles Dickens’S The Perils Of Certain English Prisoners, Kori Anne Dryer

Student Works

In Wilkie Collins’s and Charles Dickens’s 1857 novella The Perils of Certain English Prisoners and Their Treasure in Women, Children, Silver, and Jewels, the inhabitants of Silver-Store are presented with a unique definition of worth and value. The text discusses many types of value: intellectual value, physical value, productive value, etc. The collaborating authors present a pattern of having the white-male characters’ worth on the island of Silver-Store as action-based: that the doers of the society are seen as more valuable than those that are passive in the society. Gillian Ray-Barruel extrapolates on this unequal idea of social value …

Encountering Cavell, Richard Thomas Eldridge Jun 2019

Encountering Cavell, Richard Thomas Eldridge

Philosophy Faculty Works

I first came across Stanley Cavell’s writing in the fall of 1974 in a senior seminar in the philosophy of mind at Middlebury College, co-taught by Stanley Bates and Timothy Gould. We spent most of the term reading Gilbert Ryle’s The Concept of Mind and P. F. Strawson’s Individuals—books that at that time, before the widespread reception of Kripke’s Naming and Necessity, Putnam-style functionalism, and central state identity theory, still counted as contemporary philosophy of mind. It was then felt by Bates and Gould, I conjecture, that something more lively and something having to do with subjectivity might be order. …

Experiencing the evolution of the contemporary digital space has led to an inevitable awe and skepticism of technology that penetrates through my bodies of work. Wonderment is usually succeeded shortly after by a contemplation of how this shiny newness will potentially change the way we experience everyday life. This point of view and gravitation towards the digital as an artistic material is specific to being born in the late 1980’s, where there are glimpses of early memories before computers and a corresponding growth of technology with personal cognitive development. It is an active and learned inclination to engage with new …

Immigration/Migration And Settler Colonialism: Doing Critical Ethnic Studies On The U.S. - Mexico Border, Raquel Andrea Madrigal Jun 2019

Immigration/Migration And Settler Colonialism: Doing Critical Ethnic Studies On The U.S. - Mexico Border, Raquel Andrea Madrigal

American Studies ETDs

My dissertation argues that the U.S.-Mexico border, and the militarized operations of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security via Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement along the border, including state and federal anti-immigration law, are historically ongoing settler colonial structures of U.S. imperialism, and empire, which are asserted upon, and over Indigenous people and their land. I claim that these anti-immigrant, and anti-migrant structures and operations perpetuate Native dispossession, and removal, as well as deny Native presence and sovereignty. I also contend that undocumented immigrant and migrant justice must be accountable and responsible to Indigenous peoples, their land, and …

Perspectives Of Teachers And Social Workers On Sexual Exploitation Of Adolescent Students In Tanzania, Budeba Petro Mlyakado Jun 2019

Perspectives Of Teachers And Social Workers On Sexual Exploitation Of Adolescent Students In Tanzania, Budeba Petro Mlyakado

Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

Sexual exploitation of children and adolescents is a global concern. Nevertheless, there is a paucity of empirical studies in Tanzania that systematically examine stakeholders’ views on this phenomenon. Using qualitative data from eight focus group discussions (FGDs), this study explores perspectives of teachers and social workers on sexual exploitation of adolescent students. The respondents of this study were conveniently selected from six secondary schools and two social welfare departments in Dar es Salaam and Mwanza regions of Tanzania. The study intended to generate insights for relevant policy and practices towards mitigating the plights of sexual exploitation. Results indicate that teachers …

Promoting Teacher Professional Learning In Tanzanian Schools: Lessons From Chinese School-Based Professional Learning Communities, Mjege Kinyota, Patrick Severine Kavenuke, Rehema J. Mwakabenga,

Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

This paper reports on the history, features, and challenges of School-Based Professional Learning Communities (SBPLCs) in China to elicit lessons for Tanzania towards improving in-service teacher professional development. Based on the Chinese SBPLCs, this review aims to provide some insights to educational planners and teachers in Tanzania on how to establish and maintain effective school-based professional learning. This analysis used 30 journal articles published over the past twelve years (2006-2017) to provide research-based evidence. The findings indicate that Chinese schools have registered significant achievements in SBPLCs by supporting teacher collaborative learning and research in both rural and urban areas. As …

Not All R & R Is Good: Religiosity And Racism Within Charles Dickens’S And Wilkie Collins’S The Perils Of Certain English Prisoners, Emma Judd Jun 2019

Not All R & R Is Good: Religiosity And Racism Within Charles Dickens’S And Wilkie Collins’S The Perils Of Certain English Prisoners, Emma Judd

Student Works

In their 1857 collaborative Christmas novella, The Perils of Certain English Prisoners, Charles Dickens and Wilkie Collins present various instances of blatant and unabashed racism on the island of Silver-Store. From nearly the beginning, the story’s narrator, Gill Davis, notes, “I have stated myself to be a man of no learning, and, if I entertain prejudices, I hope allowance may be made. I will now confess to one. It may be a right one or it may be a wrong one; but, I never did like Natives, except in the form of oysters” (12). This racist attitude is not …

English Prisoners In Their Unnatural Habitat: Conquering Nature In The Perils Of Certain English Prisoners By Wilkie Collins And Charles Dickens, Madeline Christensen Jun 2019

English Prisoners In Their Unnatural Habitat: Conquering Nature In The Perils Of Certain English Prisoners By Wilkie Collins And Charles Dickens, Madeline Christensen

Student Works

Charles Dickens is most famous for writing about urban spaces and environments such as the city of London. However, as Joseph Carroll points out, there are numerous "prominent British depictions of wild nature" and these depictions of nature find their way into the "cultivated tracts of British domestic fiction" (305). It is this relationship, between the cultivated and uncultivated wilderness that Charles Dickens and Wilkie Collins touch upon in their collaborative 1857 Christmas novella, The Perils of Certain English Prisoners, and Their Treasure in Women, Children, Silver, and Jewels. Collins and Dickens explore the relationship between humans and nature …

Native American Women In Non-Traditional Roles, Olga Gene Richards Jun 2019

Native American Women In Non-Traditional Roles, Olga Gene Richards

Theses and Dissertations

There has been a lot of literature written about Pocahontas and Sacagawea but very little about other Native American women, particularly those who have crossed accepted gender lines to succeed in a man's world. This thesis discusses four Native American women who overcame many physical and cultural challenges, embraced non-traditional female roles and whose lives and influence continue today. The women include (1) LaDonna Vita Tabbytite Harris, a Comanche and former wife of Senator Fred Harris who is an author, politician and humanitarian, (2) Mochi, a Cheyenne who survived the Sand Creek and Washita Massacres to become a fierce warrior …

Young Guns: Lasting Changes In Communities As A Result Of Gun Violence, Louisa Ballif, Eric Gillett Jun 2019

Young Guns: Lasting Changes In Communities As A Result Of Gun Violence, Louisa Ballif, Eric Gillett

Journal of Undergraduate Research

On the subject of gun violence, the United States ranks high above any other country in frequency and fatality. In reaction to these violences, there are usually massive outpourings of support, concern, etc. However, with the rapidity of the current news climate, these events are lost quickly and all but forgotten at times. This project is in part a reaction to the brevity with which these events are covered. The purpose of this project is also to explore the longer lasting effects of mass shootings within the physical space of the violence and the distance with which most of the …

Public transportation is an entity that is fast-growing in the state of Utah. While the Utah population is generally dependent on their cars, there are growing amounts of people that rely on public transportation to get where they need to go. There are several different transit systems that are available for Utahns that serve the differing and fluctuating needs of individuals within the population. Among these are a commuter train (FrontRunner) that connects three different counties across the Wasatch Front, a light-rail system (TRAX) with three different lines that run through Salt Lake County, several different bus routes, ski buses …

Early Orientalist Sentiments In Dutch Baroque Still Life Paintings: A Study Of Harmen Steenwyck, Maika Bahr, Martha Peacock Jun 2019

Early Orientalist Sentiments In Dutch Baroque Still Life Paintings: A Study Of Harmen Steenwyck, Maika Bahr, Martha Peacock

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The relationship between the Dutch Republic and Japan during the seventeenth century provoked early Orientalist feelings that were manifested in still-life paintings. Harmen Steenwyck’s Still Life: An Allegory of the Vanitas of Human Life from 1640, depicts an intricate, Japanese sword at the center of a still-life table scene surrounded by objects that allude to the theme of vanitas, like the yellowed skull and pocket watch, and other objects that signify the romanticized Orient, like the supple fuchsia-colored silk and sparkling seashell (Fig. 1). Although still-life paintings are usually decoded with an emphasis on the theme of vanitas, I chose …

Intimate Fictions: The Rhetorical Strategies Of Obscene Violence In Four Novels, Steven Monk Jun 2019

Intimate Fictions: The Rhetorical Strategies Of Obscene Violence In Four Novels, Steven Monk

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Richard Wright, Marlon James, Cormac McCarthy and Ken Levine are each celebrated in their respective fields but notorious for their obscene depictions of violence. Contrary to trauma theorists’ claims that violence shatters language and cannot be spoken, these writers speak violence in its most disturbing forms: torn eyeballs, dead infants, forced fecal consumption and mechanized rape. I argue that obscene violence, much like obscene language, creates a space of intimacy in which transgressive, subversive and oppositional thoughts may be spoken. By alienating their texts from the larger reading public, these writers entice a smaller group of sympathetic readers to develop …
