Translating To Change The Nation: The Case Of José Pedro Varela, A Reformer In Late 19th Century Uruguay, Gabriel Gonzalez Nunez
Translating To Change The Nation: The Case Of José Pedro Varela, A Reformer In Late 19th Century Uruguay, Gabriel Gonzalez Nunez
Writing and Language Studies Faculty Publications
The history of translation in Hispanic America can be segmented into specific historical periods that differ from those found in Europe, namely: encounter and conquest, the colonial period; pre-independence and emancipation; independence and republic; and an ongoing period that started in 1920 (Bastin, 2006). A great deal of work has been done regarding the first three of those periods. Later historical periods, while still receiving some scholarly attention, have not been the focus of as much research (cf. e.g., Montoya, 2014). This paper hopes to provide further insights on translation practices during the Independence and Republic Period by focusing on …

Re-Visioning Ralph Ellison’S Invisible Man For A Class Of Urban Immigrant Youth, Camille Goodison
Re-Visioning Ralph Ellison’S Invisible Man For A Class Of Urban Immigrant Youth, Camille Goodison
Publications and Research
In this essay, I will explore Ralph Ellison’s 1952 classic novel, Invisible Man, as a text that has contemporary and relatable themes for a modern-day classroom of mostly urban youth. This essay is also a personal journey into how Ellison’s inventive approaches to form helped create a work that lends itself to contemporary reimagining. It asks the question, can Ellison’s interest in creating a living Afro-American literary tradition rooted in the lore of the ‘peasant’ or common folk have contemporary applications? How does Ellison’s belief that everyday folk expression has value hold up for today’s readers? I try to …

I See You, God, John S. Tanner
Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel
Aloha! I am both honored and a bit daunted to be invited to speak to you about the reason for the hope that is in me. The topic seems to call for a talk in a personal vein. So I shall speak autobiographically about the reasons for the hope I felt as a young man preparing to go on a mission and for the hope I feel today. I also will touch upon larger epistemological questions about how I know. I have entitled my talk “I See You, God” for reasons that will become clear later.
What We Learn From Alma’S Messages To His Sons, Richard G. Moore
What We Learn From Alma’S Messages To His Sons, Richard G. Moore
Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel
The transformation of Alma the Younger from a person “seeking to destroy the church of God” (Alma 36:6) to a spiritually powerful prophet was dramatic and extraordinary. To go from being among the “vilest of sinners” to wishing he could be an angel (Mosiah 28:4; Alma 29:1) so he might speak with even more power demonstrates the absolute effective impact repentance through faith in Christ’s Atonement can have for any individual. Alma’s conversion begins with a frightening appearance of an angel, declaring to Alma in a voice of thunder that if he does not cease his efforts to destroy the …
“A Teacher Come From God”, Marlin K. Jensen
“A Teacher Come From God”, Marlin K. Jensen
Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel
One of the desires of the heart that I’ve had since being called at age eighteen to teach a youth Sunday School class is the desire to become a good teacher. Chapter 3 of John’s Gospel is best known for the exchange between the Savior and Nicodemus about the need to be born again. For me, however, the most moving part of that dialogue has always been the way Nicodemus greeted the Savior. He began with the salutation, “Rabbi,” which, as you scholars know, is the Jewish title for “master” or “teacher.” He continued, “We know that thou art a …

Scripture Note: A Fresh Approach To Moroni’S Promise, Alan Taylor Farnes
Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel
Moroni’s promise is a well-known and much-loved passage of scripture to members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It has been called “probably the most celebrated and oft-cited verses in the Book of Mormon.”1 Most missionaries know it by memory and often challenge their investigators to take “Moroni’s challenge.” Moroni tells his readers that when they read the Book of Mormon they should ponder on the Lord’s mercy since the Creation and then ask God if the Book of Mormon is not true. Then comes Moroni’s promise: “If ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with …

Finding Documents On The Joseph Smith Papers Website, Kenneth L. Alford
Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel
The Joseph Smith Papers website (josephsmithpapers.org) is a wonderful resource. With thousands of documents and hundreds of resource pages, though, it can sometimes feel like you’re searching for a needle in a haystack. The purpose of this article is to demonstrate how you might use the website to learn more about quotations and documents associated with the Prophet Joseph Smith.

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel
There is something special about original historical documents. I have seen it again and again in my own life and in sharing my work on The Joseph Smith Papers with others: people are drawn to the tangible connection to the past provided by these seemingly ordinary, often faded pages. As the Library of Congress puts it, “Primary sources help students relate in a personal way to events of the past and promote a deeper understanding of history as a series of human events.” They inspire people to find out more, to think critically about what they read, and to take …

Political Object Or Individual Subject?: Dominant Dutch Narratives Vs. Migrant Identities, Ashley Little
Political Object Or Individual Subject?: Dominant Dutch Narratives Vs. Migrant Identities, Ashley Little
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
This research study analyzes the impact of public narratives in The Netherlands upon the individual narratives of second-generation migrant women in the labor force. Viewing narratives as on one hand, symbolic and rhetorical, and on the other hand, as pragmatic and structural, I attempt to draw a correlation between public narratives and individual narrative production, arguing that discourses and practices of discrimination originate—and often intensify—through the relationship between these two narrative modes. I hypothesize the ways in which both migrant and native Dutch narratives currently challenge, but also have the potential to challenge, this dually-produced and dually-reinforced discrimination narrative. Correspondingly, …
Sex And Death On The Western Emigrant Trail: The Biology Of Three American Tragedies, Melvin L. Bashore
Sex And Death On The Western Emigrant Trail: The Biology Of Three American Tragedies, Melvin L. Bashore
BYU Studies
Who would be more likely to survive in a wilderness setting, beset by starvation and extreme cold? Women or men? Single individuals or families? Would age make a difference? In Sex and Death on the Western Emigrant Trail, Donald Grayson looks at who died and who lived in three mid-nineteenth-century emigrant groups. An emeritus professor of anthropology at the University of Washington, Grayson began looking at patterns of death in the Donner Party, publishing his findings in 1990 and 1993. Curious if those same patterns of death were manifest in another emigrant group, Grayson began looking at the 1856 …

Voice From The Dust, Darren Parry
Voice From The Dust, Darren Parry
BYU Studies
Darren Parry is the chairman of the Northwest Band Tribal Council of the Shoshone Nation. On November 8, 2018, at Brigham Young University, he presented this talk for the Charles Redd Center for Western Studies.
He is working to create the Boa Ogoi [Big River] Cultural Interpretive Center, an educational center that will share the story of the Bear River Massacre. On January 29, 1863, the U.S. Army attacked the Shoshone encamped at the Bear River, near present-day Preston, Idaho, and slaughtered 250 to 500 Shoshone people, including women and children. Public reports of this massacre were officially given by …

She Will Find What Is Lost: Brian Kershisnik’S Artistic Response To The Problem Of Human Suffering, Cris Baird
BYU Studies
In March 2014, my wife, Janae, and I purchased Brian Kershisnik’s masterpiece She Will Find What Is Lost and immediately loaned it to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for display in the Church’s Conference Center in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah.1 In this essay, I tell the story of how we came to own the painting, what it means to us, and why I believe the painting has a spiritually important and universally applicable message.

From Vatican Ii To Amoris Laetitia: The Catholic Social And Sexual Ethics Division And A Way Of Ecclesial Interconnection, Alexandre Andrade Martins
Theology Faculty Research and Publications
This paper navigates the development of ethical issues during Vatican II and the impulse to develop a new moral theology just after the Council. This paper argues, on one hand, that Gaudium et Spes develops a new moral theology based on the imperative of conscience mediated by faith in issues of social ethics. On the other hand, the old moral orientation was preserved on sexual ethics. After the council, these two moral faces have led magisterial teaching to two different paths that can be seen chronologically in approaches used for issues of social and sexual ethics. Vatican II encouraged a …

Hallo (Que) Por Opino (Que): La Gramaticalización De La Epistemicidad Del Verbo Hallar En Un Corpus Salvadoreño, Luisa A. Valdez
Theses and Dissertations

The Negative Form Ma:J2 As A Pragmatic Marker Incasual Conversations In Nakhon Si Thammarat Thai(รูปปฏิเสธ Ma:J2ในฐานะดัชนีวัจนปฏิบัติในบทสนทนาแบบกันเองในภาษาไทยนครศรีธรรมราช), Rujira Bumrungkarn
Journal of Letters
When observing speakers of Nakhon Si Thammarat Thai talking in their daily life, it is found that the negative form ma:j2can beused beyond negation. For example, they use ma:j2 to correct information, confirm what has been said, and show that they agree with other interlocutors. However, most previous studies of Southern Thai dialects have only viewed ma:j2 as a negative form syntactically and semantically, but not pragmatically. This article, therefore, aims to study the pragmatic functions of the negative form ma:j2 in casual conversations in Nakhon Si Thammarat Thai. Data were collected from 36 conversations between two or more female …
Attitudes Towards Thai Regional Dialects Among Students Who Have Studied Linguistics And Those Who Have Not Studied Linguistics, Jaralvilai Charunrochana
Attitudes Towards Thai Regional Dialects Among Students Who Have Studied Linguistics And Those Who Have Not Studied Linguistics, Jaralvilai Charunrochana
Journal of Letters
The questionexamined in this research is whether knowledge of linguistics can make students more objective in their attitudes towards speakers of regional dialects. Data was collected from 236 undergraduate students who had completed two courses in linguistics and 192 who had never studied the subject. In this research the matched-guise technique was utilized. Respondents evaluated guise speakers on five characteristics: friendliness, intelligence, morality, physical attraction and wealth, using a 5-point scale. Although both groups of students made more positive assessments of speakers who usedstandard Thai, those who had studied linguistics reacted significantly less negatively to regional dialect users, i.e., Thai …
Perception Of /G/ In French: A Comparative Study Of Students With And Without Experience Of Studying Abroad(การรับรู้หน่วยเสียง/G/ในภาษาฝรั่งเศส : การศึกษาเชิงเปรียบเทียบระหว่างนิสิตที่มีกับไม่มีประสบการณ์การไปเรียนต่างประเทศ), Wannachai Kampeera
Journal of Letters
Research in Second Language Acquisition (SLA) shows that the Study Abroad context (SA) can improve the four core language skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. However, the question of how much SA helps improve the perception of individual phonemes, a more specific skill, has not yet been widely addressed. This study investigates Thai students' perceptual ability with regards to French /g/ in phonetic environments which trigger contextual variations of the phoneme. Two groups of undergraduate Thai learners of French were involved: returnees from Francophone countries (Study Abroad context: SA) and those who had never been to Francophone countries (At Home …
Naming Characters In Thai Children's Narratives : A Developmental Perspective, Sorabud Rungrojsuwan
Naming Characters In Thai Children's Narratives : A Developmental Perspective, Sorabud Rungrojsuwan
Journal of Letters
The present study aims at investigating the referential forms used in naming narrative characters by Thai children and examining the developmental path of Thai children in character naming. Data from 40 narratives by 4, 6, 9 and 11-year-old children collected by Zlatev and Yangklang (2018) were used. Classified by the number of free morphemes, findings show that two types of referential forms are used: single and combined units. Single-unit forms can be nouns and pronouns, while combined units include two and three-unit combinations with various internal structures. It was found that older groups of children produced more combined-unit referential forms …
Imagination's Role In Emotional Responses To Fiction, Siranat Thamtrachai
Imagination's Role In Emotional Responses To Fiction, Siranat Thamtrachai
Journal of Letters
This essay argues that emotional responses to fiction are genuine and rational. Emotional responses are not reflexes; they are an intrinsically valuable process of deliberation. The indispensable requirement for an emotional response is imagination. When reading fiction, imagination helps us emotionally engage with the text. Imaginative involvement in reading profoundly influences the reader; it can motivate us in myriad ways and blur awareness of the difference between reality and fantasy, while also enabling understanding and sharing of the feelings of fictional characters and even authors. Lastly, imaginative resistance shows that we intuitively use the same moral standards to judge both …

The History, Society And Culture Of Spain Shown In The Paintings Of Francisco De Goya(ประวัติศาสตร์สังคมและวัฒนธรรมสเปนที่ปรากฏในภาพเขียนของฟรันซิสโก เด โกยา), Chantra Pramoonsab
Journal of Letters
The works that the master painter Francisco de Goya created during his lifetime, as well as his biography, make us aware of the sociocultural and political contexts of his era, especially through the story depicted in each piece of work. Goya portrayed various aspects of the ways of life of common people and elites, such as their daily lives, the customs and traditions they practiced, the political issues in the royal court that affected them, and the administration of the country. The cruelty of war, which made all parties simultaneously attackers and victims, inspired Goya to convey its impact in …

Bot Lakhon Rueang Dalang Chabap Muen Chamnian, a literary work of unknown origin, was recorded in a Samut Thai, or a folded paper book, and is now kept at Chiang Mai university library. It is inscribed on the book cover that Muen Chamnian wrote the text. Bot Lakhon Rueang Dalang Chabap Muen Chamnian is a different version of Bot Lakhon Rueang Dalang of King Rama I. It starts from a scene in which Panyi enters the Manya kingdom, and moves forward to a scene in which Butsaba and Karattika disguise themselves as male dancers and make a journey in search …
