Review Of The Oxford Handbook Of Food Ethics, Josh Milburn Jul 2019

Review Of The Oxford Handbook Of Food Ethics, Josh Milburn

Between the Species

The Oxford Handbook of Food Ethics, edited by Anne Barnhill, Mark Budolfson, and Tyler Doggett, contains 35 chapters over 8 sections. Many of these chapters are directly relevant to animal ethicists. Even many of those that do not initially appear to be, however, should be of interest. I thoroughly recommend The Oxford Handbook of Food Ethics to all animal ethicists interested in addressing food-related questions in their research or teaching.

Orion's Final Song, Chad Chisholm Jul 2019

Orion's Final Song, Chad Chisholm

The Mythic Circle

While there are different stories about the death of Orion, the inspiration for this poem mainly comes from Hesiod’s Astronomia where the huntsman Orion comes to Crete for the wild game and there becomes the beloved of Artemis, goddess of the moon and the hunt. Orion and Artemis became hunting companions, and the mortal huntsman won the heart of the young immortal. However, their love was short-lived. Because of his zeal for the hunt as well as his boasting, Orion angered Gaia, the primordial goddess of the Earth, who then sent a gigantic scorpion to battle the famous hunter. While …

Dialectical Methods And The Stoicheia Paradigm In Plato’S Trilogy And Philebus, Colin C. Smith Jul 2019

Dialectical Methods And The Stoicheia Paradigm In Plato’S Trilogy And Philebus, Colin C. Smith

Philosophy Graduate Research

Plato’s Theaetetus, Sophist, and Statesman exhibit several related dialectical methods relevant to Platonic education: maieutic in Theaetetus, bifurcatory division in Sophist and Statesman, and non-bifurcatory division in Statesman, related to the ‘god-given’ method in Philebus. I consider the nature of each method through the letter or element (στοιχεῖον) paradigm, used to reflect on each method. At issue are the element’s appearances in given contexts, its fitness for communing with other elements like it in kind, and its own nature defined through its relations to others. These represent stages of inquiry for the Platonic student inquiring into the sources of knowledge.

More Than A Fiesta: Cinco De Mayo Celebrations And The Transboundary Link In Ambos Nogales, Kristen S. Valencia Jul 2019

More Than A Fiesta: Cinco De Mayo Celebrations And The Transboundary Link In Ambos Nogales, Kristen S. Valencia

American Studies ETDs

In a contemporary context, the United States-Mexico border raises concerns regarding undocumented migration, drug and human trafficking, and cartel or gang violence. While these are material realities that come, at times, with grave consequences and outcomes, they are not the only characteristics or facets of the border region. The intention of the border is to delineate and separate, however, this ignores the stationary communities along the territorial demarcation which interact with and demonstrate the fluidity of life at the line. Transboundariness, as defined by Lawrence A. Herzog, provides the framework with which to examine cross-boundary connections that result from economic …

Cartographies Of Precarity: The Cultural Politics Of Filipina And Mexican Migrant Domestic Workers, Maria Eugenia López-García Jul 2019

Cartographies Of Precarity: The Cultural Politics Of Filipina And Mexican Migrant Domestic Workers, Maria Eugenia López-García

American Studies ETDs

This dissertation examines the cultural politics of migrant domestic work in the 2000s within popular culture, mass media, contemporary art, and grassroots national organizing. While scholars and activists have identified that migrant domestic workers are the hidden backbone of the U.S. economy, dominant cultural and social narratives reinforce the racialized and gendered logics of capitalism that work to devalue domestic work as informal, disposable and precarious. It was not until after the struggle of domestic workers achieved recognition through the ratification of the International Labor Office of Convention 189 in July 2011 that this labor sector gained more intense media …

Mythic Circle #41, Gwenyth E. Hood

The Mythic Circle

In #41, The Mythic Circle welcomes seven authors new to our pages. Lawrence Buentello debuts with a supernatural story of deceit and revenge. Kevan Bowkett returns, this time offering, in prose, a poignant story of love and honor, playing out in an exotic mythological setting, and in verse, a humorous vignette from the life of a hero who knows …

The Comet Of 1577, S. Dorman Jul 2019

The Comet Of 1577, S. Dorman

The Mythic Circle

This story was written in the foothills of the Alleghenies in the early 1980s and later incorporate Into a novel, Fantastic Travelogue: Mark Twain and CS Lewis Talk Things over in The Hereafter. In the early 2000s this SF was begun as a project for the thesis paper in the CSUDH masters in humanities program (HUX). Mark Twain had written stories imagining travels in various parts of creation, leaving me with an impetus to re-imagine him as a character taking part in sundry aspects of same.

Ersaist Creation Myth, Lamar Johnson Jul 2019

Ersaist Creation Myth, Lamar Johnson

The Mythic Circle

Explanation of “Ersaist Creation Myth”: This . . . is almost unarguably the most important passage [in a ninety-page poem of which an excerpt is published here] in terms of exposit ion, for, to create an epic of one’s own in the modern day, is (in part) to eschew the cultural context that would be provided by society in a modern day Christian, or Hindu epic. As a consequence, much of my epic is a delve into worldbuilding and the various tales and legends of its people. The solid story is that, just as there are Three Gods, so too …

Panning, Anum Sattar Jul 2019

Panning, Anum Sattar

The Mythic Circle

The poem “Panning” was written on the 3rd of July 2018 during a summer poetry tutorial at the College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio. The poet portrays a woman as the natural landscape who has been exploited by a man she trusted. The persona is the river with very little gold flakes and the selfish lover does not have the patience to sieve them, so he takes a less cumbersome path and explodes her escarpment base to get what he wants. But in the end, even he loses out on her, because the fish and gold shavings are strewn “far …
