The Role Of Citizenship Status And Its Impact On Latinos’ Civic Engagement In The United States, Veronica Torres Luna
The Role Of Citizenship Status And Its Impact On Latinos’ Civic Engagement In The United States, Veronica Torres Luna
CrissCross
This paper discusses the way in which U.S. citizenship status and legal permanent resident status impacts the likelihood of involvement in civic engagement activities among Latinos in the United States. Past research has looked into various variables such as group consciousness, Spanish-media language, and importance of issues; however, specific research on citizenship status is limited. This paper analyzes data from the Pew Research Center and data obtained from individual interviews in the Midwest. The results show that citizens are more likely than residents to be involved in the community and politics. These findings have important implications in how policies are …

Is Animal Suffering Really All That Matters? The Move From Suffering To Vegetarianism, Carlo Alvaro
Is Animal Suffering Really All That Matters? The Move From Suffering To Vegetarianism, Carlo Alvaro
Publications and Research
The animal liberation movement, among other goals, seeks an end to the use of animals for food. Philosophers who write against animal exploitation agree on the goal but differ in their approaches: Deontologists argue that rearing animals for food infringes animals’ inherent right to life. Utilitarians claim that discontinuing the use of animals for food will result in the maximization of utility. Virtue-oriented theorists argue that using animals for food is an unvirtuous practice. Despite their different approaches, arguments for vegetarianism or veganism have a common step. They move from the notion of suffering to the conclusion of vegetarianism or …

Same-Sex Sexual Coercion Among Women: The Impact Of Minority Stress On Perpetration And Victimization Experiences Of Women Of Diverse Sexual Identities, Allison Kirschbaum
Dissertations
The purpose of the current study was to investigate women’s experiences with same-sex sexual coercion perpetration and victimization. Specifically, I sought to explore the role that the stress of living as a sexual minority plays in these experiences as well as to determine whether the psychological variables of perceived powerlessness, psychological distress, social support, and alcohol use mediate the relationship between minority stress and perpetration and victimization experiences. Data were collected online from self-identified women and individuals assigned female at birth who reported experiencing genital sexual contact with another woman (N=339). Of the cisgender women in the sample, 31.6% reported …

Down the Bay Oral History Project Interviews
In this interview, Mattie C. Gulley is interviewed by Kern Jackson and James Craig in her home. Ms. Gulley shares reflections and memories about living in the Down the Bay neighborhood of Mobile for decades. These include memories of the businesses which used to exist Down the Bay, particularly on Texas Street, and the impacts of urban renewal and the construction of I-10 on the neighborhood. She speaks of prominent elders in the community, and draws some contrasts between the Down the Bay she knew growing up and the present state of the community.

Violence And The Other In The Novels Of Carmel Bird, Donna Yannakis
Violence And The Other In The Novels Of Carmel Bird, Donna Yannakis
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This thesis argues that throughout her fictional work, Carmel Bird interrogates multiple forms of violence against the gendered and racialised other. Using Judith Butler’s theories of gender performativity and the discursive construction of race, the thesis shows how these constructions not only inform or incite violence against the other, but are inherently violent in themselves. To chart these multiple forms of violence, the thesis uses Slavoj Žižek’s delineation of a triumvirate of violence: symbolic, systemic and subjective violence. He describes subjective violence as the most visible, physical violence of an actor or actors against an other. He determines that this …
"Blown Through The Tube At 50 Miles An Hour" : Transportation, Motion And Mobility In Virginia Woolf's Novels, Deyan Meng
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
At the turn of the 20th century the rapid development of transportation technology significantly transformed the physical world as well as people’s subjective perceptions of it. Virginia Woolf’s fascination with various modes of transportation, both as a traveler and as a keen observer, is translated into her fiction and non-fiction writings. The representation of physical transportation in Woolf’s works has received the attention of a number of scholars. However, the ways in which Woolf was inspired by the transport revolution and employed this as a vehicle for modernist narrative experimentation have not been fully explored. This dissertation therefore investigates the …

Relationships Between Hospitals' Music Therapy Services And Hospital Consumer Assessment Of Healthcare Providers And Systems ( Hcahps ) Scores, Kimberly S. Iverson
Theses and Dissertations
Background: The implementation of the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey measured patients’ satisfaction with their hospital stays. The HCAHPS brought increased public access regarding hospital performance and changes to repayment polices. As such, patient satisfaction became a popular topic in hospitals within the last several years. Previous research demonstrated medical benefits for the use music therapy in hospitals, but research regarding its relationship to patient satisfaction was limited.
Hypotheses: The hypothesis of the current study was that patients who received music therapy services while in the hospital would have higher HCAHPS scores than those who …

Manifest Destiny Continued: The Reification And Colonization Of Time, Blake Reno
Theses and Dissertations
With the end of the settlement of what became the continental United States, capitalism and imperialism by nature needed to continue in their growth. In the late 19th and early 20th century up through World War I, history and the time of laborers were the sites of expansion for capitalism. There was a realization that public relations and journalism were in essence writing history as it was happening, and capitalists took note and moved into adjusting these spheres in their favor. In addition, capitalists began attempting to expand their influence over the time of their laborers in order to increase …
Female Protagonist Mega-Archetypes: A Study In Medieval European Romances, Doaa Omran
Female Protagonist Mega-Archetypes: A Study In Medieval European Romances, Doaa Omran
English Language and Literature ETDs
Despite the claim that structuralism has sung its swan song, my research offers new insights in the field of structuralism through archetypal criticism by exploring four female hero mega-archetypes as narrative structures inspired by the Qur’an and the Bible. These scriptural narratives offer tenets, based on narratives and motifs, that, as structural units, create and identify mega-archetypes. This study posits how, rather than being extensions of existing structuralist taxonomies on the male hero monomyth, the female mega-archetypes enrich that monomythical narrative. This work details the structure of the mega-archetypes Zulaikhah (Potiphar’s wife), Sarah and Hagar, the Virgin Mary, and Queen …

In 1966, the lovable crew of the Спрут landed in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Hollywood’s rendering of these Russians in The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming would prove to be the exception to the rule in Western media for years. A staple of Western entertainment since the mid-20thcentury, Russian adversaries have not faded from the limelight in the post-Cold War era. Rather, Western portrayals of Russian antagonists have largely continued to reflect contemporaneous states of Western-Russian relations. By studying Russian portrayals in Western media (namely television, film, and 21stcentury video games) within their historical context, …

From "Companionate Wife" To Feminist Pioneer: Amy Jacques Garvey's Feminist Prowess Liberates Women In Restructuring The Unia, Kiana Cardenas
Of Life and History
This research highlights women’s roles and significant contributions to the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA), focusing mainly on the role of Amy Jacques Garvey. Founded by Marcus Garvey and his first wife Amy Ashwood Garvey in 1914, the UNIA sought to improve the poor conditions of African descendants through economic, political, and social independence. Garveyism, Marcus Garvey’s male-centered ideology, permeated the UNIA, shaping the structure of the organization in a way that blatantly favored men and their roles in the political movement. Although women were considered important to the organization, their membership was secondary to that of their male counterparts. …
