In my thesis I explore the role of mission decision narratives of women in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Before 2012, women could not serve missions until age 21. Once the minimum age was changed to 19 in October of 2012, many more women were able to serve on mission as the opportunity was less likely to disrupt their education or romantic relationships. In The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, missions are seen as a priesthood duty for men but a matter of choice for women. This ability to choose and the narrative that follows …

This dissertation is an action research self-study undertaken with the aim of transforming my pastoral leadership practices with the extended application of assisting other leaders to do the same. The research question asks in what ways action research methodology with its inherent reflective methods contributes to pastoral leadership transformation. The primary outcome is a framework of holistic reflection that consistently and systematically works to transform my leadership practices. Through the action research methodology of constant iteration, I evaluated the effects of my leadership, reflected on the disconnect between my core values and my behavior and searched for a means to …

From Carver To Carter: The Political Economy Of Peanut Cultivation In The South, 1945-1976, Hayden Noel Mcdaniel

Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on the creation of a robust peanut industry in the South during the twentieth century, tracing its growth from a minor, local subsistence commodity to an agribusiness contributing to mass consumption. This study argues that local groups, constituents of peanut producing regions, and their representation in Congress worked together to establish a national peanut culture. Because peanuts’ rise in importance happened nearly simultaneously with the escalation of federal agricultural policies, studying peanuts rather than other traditional crops best demonstrates the interconnected relationship between federal policy and agricultural politics in the South.

While the Olympics desire to remake its host communities through economic and housing reform to the benefit of local people, its housing legacy does not adequately serve the intended communities. By using a case study approach, the London 2012 Olympic Games was analyzed through a provisional codebook created based off of academic research on the concept of legacy and the Olympics. In this analysis, the London 2012 Games were found as not serving the needs of the local population. Don Bialostosky has long been admired as a writer of dense texts aimed at theory-minded academics and addressing Bakhtin and rhetoric. With How to Play a Poem, Bialostosky plays to a different audience, positioning himself as “something of a popular entertainer,” to use T. S. Eliot’s improbable self-description in the wake of The Waste Land. Aimed not at theoreticians but average teachers of poetry, Bialostosky’s text attempts to make Bakhtin accessible for the college and high school classroom. How to correct poverty in a society is extremely complex. In the nineteenth century, the British struggled to house, feed and care for the unemployed and destitute men, women and children created by the Industrial Revolution. Many in the upper classes considered poverty a moral failure, yet they had little impetus to end it. Poverty, as defined by an inability to provide for one’s needs due to a variety of factors, was seen as necessary, for without it there would be no motivation for the lower classes to work and provide a luxurious life for the wealthy.

Asian-Americans have a historical legacy and a multiplicity of narratives that are often rendered absent in American culture. Our oppression is not commonly spoken about, but it is relevant. By decentering Eurocentric thought as the only valid philosophy, herein this study I perform Asian-American philosophy through an analysis of philosophical and sociological texts on race. I continuously echo George Yancy and Gloria Anzaldua, philosophers of race, respectively, on the African-American and Latin-American experience, for their philosophy has greatly lead me to understanding my own. There are more slaves today than at any other time in human history. The International Labour Organization (ILO) estimates that there are more than 40 million slaves worldwide. This paper accompanies a 6-part webinar series of the same title that explores how gender inequality, capitalism, and pornography are driving a $99 billion illegal industry. The paper begins by defining what human trafficking is and includes both forced labor and commercial sexual exploitation. Six primary forms of human trafficking are explored, including domestic servitude, bonded labor, child slavery, sex trafficking, and forced marriage. Next, the paper explores who the victims of …

The repressed school strike in Guinea Conakry in 1961, the post-apartheid social crisis in South Africa and the 2002 civil war in Côte d'Ivoire are major events in African history that drew Maryse Condé's attention as illustrated through Heremakhonon (1976), Histoire de la femme cannibale (2003), En attendant la montée des eaux (2010). Her stance shows a tendency to evolve with her time in political and intellectual thoughts. If Condé's entire work shows that the author cannot be placed in a specific straightjacket, it is because her writing conveys the urgency of daily experiences. After studying the narrative figures at work in Maryse Condé's novels Traversée de la Mangrove (1989) and La vie sans fards (2012), our article questions the obvious valorization of stories and of storytelling shown as ambiguous in the textual space, because they are shown as indefinite, polysemic and uncertain. In the textual universe, the ambiguous narrative is especially sought after because it is updatable, by the enunciator as much as by the instance addressed. We suggest that this characteristic of the ambiguous and renewable story and of storytelling is also performed in Maryse Condé' works. In our view, this corresponds …

Maryse Condé's plays reveal both a scriptural and thematic dynamism. This movement manifests a commitment that renews itself through the dramatization of varied sociopolitical current events. The first plays of the Guadeloupean showcase slavery, colonization and Independence. The problematic of the future of Black peoples flowing from them resounds differently in her recent works. Maryse Condé complexifies it indeed and updates it constantly. This makes her an unconventional author, for her writing takes roots in negritude, partakes in post-negritude and proceeds equally from a dramaturgy of uprootedness.

This article shows the committed relations of the Caribbean author to education and its stakes. The birth of the Negro Renaissance movement in Harlem (USA), at the beginning of the 1920s, had a remarkable impact on the destiny of the black peoples of Africa, especially in their fight for independence. Having experienced slavery and segregation, the AfroAmerican intellectuals fought continuously in the quest for dignity and freedom. In so doing, their actions and ideas inspired their African counterparts to devise ways and means in their anticolonial fight.
