Intervention Principles In Pediatric Health Care: The Difference Between Physicians And The State., D. Robert Macdougall Aug 2019

Intervention Principles In Pediatric Health Care: The Difference Between Physicians And The State., D. Robert Macdougall

Publications and Research

According to various accounts, intervention in pediatric decisions is justified either by the best interests standard or by the harm principle. While these principles have various nuances that distinguish them from each other, they are similar in the sense that both focus primarily on the features of parental decisions that justify intervention, rather than on the competency or authority of the parties that intervene. Accounts of these principles effectively suggest that intervention in pediatric decision making is warranted for both physicians and the state under precisely the same circumstances. This essay argues that there are substantial differences in the competencies …

The Rural Health Physician Narrative: A New Historic Analysis Of Appalachian Representation In Twentieth-Century Rural Physician Narratives, Ashley Smith Aug 2019

The Rural Health Physician Narrative: A New Historic Analysis Of Appalachian Representation In Twentieth-Century Rural Physician Narratives, Ashley Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The rural health physician narrative is one of the most understudied genres in non-fictional Appalachian literature. Physician narratives are significant in the historical, social, and political contexts of twentieth-century Appalachian representation. These accounts provide insight into the social contexts in which physicians lived as they wrote about healthcare and Appalachian communities. New Historicism is an analytical tool used to better understand the complexity surrounding Appalachian representation, particularly in terms of the politics of representation, gender, and race that influenced these narratives in the twentieth century. I engage in close readings of narratives written by or about rural health physicians who …

Movement In Elementary Education, Elizabete Bosse

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Movement in Education explores the impact of movement on the quality of a student’s learning experience in education. This thesis is the culmination of four years of study from 2019-2023 in East Tennessee State University’s education and dance programs. Participating in these programs has provided me with many opportunities to explore the impacts of movement pedagogy in elementary education. The research portion of this thesis focuses on the educational benefits of incorporating movement into classroom activities and assessments. The experiential portion of this thesis focuses on both observations and data collected from students in a 3rd grade classroom who participated …

Eat This In Remembrance: The Zooarchaeology Of Secular And Religious Sites In 17th-Century New Mexico, Ana C. Opishinski

Graduate Masters Theses

This thesis examines the faunal remains from LA 20,000, a 17th-century Spanish estancia near Santa Fe, New Mexico that was inhabited by a family of Spanish colonists and indigenous laborers. The data collected from these specimens are examined to better understand the diet of the site’s inhabitants, especially in conjunction with existing data on the plant portion of the diet at this site. Creating a more complete picture of the diet, the analysis covers Number of Identified Specimens (NISP), Minimum Number of Individuals (MNI), potential meat weight represented by the various species, bone modifications, and ageing and kill-off patterns. These …

Pantomime: The History And Metamorphosis Of A Theatrical Ideology, Karl E. Toepfer Aug 2019

Pantomime: The History And Metamorphosis Of A Theatrical Ideology, Karl E. Toepfer

Open Educational Resources

This book offers perhaps the most comprehensive history of pantomime ever written. No other book so thoroughly examines the varieties of pantomimic performance from the early Roman Empire, when the term “pantomime” came into use, until the present. After thoroughly examining the complexities and startlingly imaginative performance strategies of Roman pantomime, the author identifies the peculiar political circumstances that revived and shaped pantomime in France and Austria in the eighteenth century, leading to the Pierrot obsession in the nineteenth century. Modernist aesthetics awakened a huge, highly diverse fascination with pantomime. The book explores an extraordinary variety of modernist and postmodern …

In Pursuit Of Social Justice At The Postmodern Turn: Intersectional Activism Through The Lens Of The Ecosexual Movement, Jennifer Jean Reed Aug 2019

In Pursuit Of Social Justice At The Postmodern Turn: Intersectional Activism Through The Lens Of The Ecosexual Movement, Jennifer Jean Reed

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

In this study, I examine the development of the ecosexual movement, a social movement that begins at the intersection of environmental and sexual struggles, from its inception in the late 1990s/early 2000s. Previous research suggests intersectionality in social movements often ends up being divisive because it emphasizes difference. Using a mixed qualitative methods design including ethnographic field work, interviews, and content analysis of related web and print materials, I analyze how the ecosexual movement negotiates intersectionality. I found the ecosexual movement links processual notions of environmental justice and sexual justice through a dominant collective action frame of queer, erotic, “irreverent …

Explaining America's Proxy War In Afghanistan: U.S. Relations With Pakistan And Saudi Arabia 1979–1989, Adelaide Petrov-Yoo Aug 2019

Explaining America's Proxy War In Afghanistan: U.S. Relations With Pakistan And Saudi Arabia 1979–1989, Adelaide Petrov-Yoo

History

From 1979 to 1989, an international coalition led by the United States, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan sent aid to Afghan guerillas known as the mujahideen. This thesis investigates the interests served by this aid by identifying key decision makers and identifying what they hoped to achieve by participating in the aid pipeline. In the United States, President Carter escalated the aid program in response to waxing Soviet influence and waning US influence in the region. President Reagan’s foreign policy approach, fighting the Cold War in other countries through proxies labeled “freedom fighters”, encouraged members of Congress and the Executive branch …

So . . . We're Going For A Walk: A Placed-Based Outdoor Art Experiential Learning Experience, Priscilla Anne Stewart Aug 2019

So . . . We're Going For A Walk: A Placed-Based Outdoor Art Experiential Learning Experience, Priscilla Anne Stewart

Theses and Dissertations

Schools in the United States often emphasize making children competitive in a global economy while neglecting the importance of developing citizens who are ecologically responsible. Problems of climate change, loss of biodiversity, mass extinctions and degradation of the natural environment, are often ignored. Some researchers have suggested that children lack unstructured play time in nature, have an increased amount of screen time, lack mindfulness, and are insulated from the natural world. Many children rarely have significant experience with nature's wildness. It is common for people to experience a sense of placelessness in the hyper-mobility of present times where "globalizing" agendas …

How An Urban Beach Impacts A Small Town: The Rivi-Erie, A Public Art And Placemaking Case Study, Ellen M. Martin Aug 2019

How An Urban Beach Impacts A Small Town: The Rivi-Erie, A Public Art And Placemaking Case Study, Ellen M. Martin

Museum Studies Theses

This thesis documents the creation of an urban beach on the banks of the Erie Canal in Lockport, New York and the effect it had as both public art and placemaking on a community's identity and development. The “Rivi-Erie” was a project that had the potential to impact the city by reimagining and reinventing a valuable, yet previously underutilized parcel of land.

The concept of changing a public space into a faux urban beach is not new. Beaches with no attendant swimmable water became popular about fifteen years ago in Paris when a newly elected Socialist Mayor sought to address …

Conservation Treatment Of A 16th- 17th Century Panel Painting Attributed To Paul Brill, Jen Munch

Art Conservation Master's Projects

An oil painting on red oak panel, attributed to Paul Brill, was examined and treated. Structural issues resulting from the failure of an attached cradle system and a prior insect infestation of the wood support were addressed using a combination of modern and traditional methods and materials, including the removal of the cradle and the fabrication and attachment of a new flexible auxiliary support. An aged, discolored varnish layer and discolored prior inpainting were also addressed. Scientific analysis included the use of two X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) techniques, Spot XRF and Scanning XRF, to characterize materials used in the …

Experimental Loss Techniques For The Filling And Inpainting Of Horizon ’72: A Screenprint By Noriko Yamamoto Prince, Carolyn Burns Aug 2019

Experimental Loss Techniques For The Filling And Inpainting Of Horizon ’72: A Screenprint By Noriko Yamamoto Prince, Carolyn Burns

Art Conservation Master's Projects

Filling and inpainting uniformly flat screenprinted surfaces present unique challenges for conservators. Research and experimentation identified successful loss compensation techniques for an eight-color screenprint entitled Horizon ’72 by Noriko Yamamoto Prince. Damages to the printed surface were extensive and trials revealed the insufficiency of traditional paper conservation inpainting practices. Digital fills, already used in textile and photo conservation, provided a practicable option for treatment. Colored inks from the original print were recreated digitally and printed on a high quality inkjet printer using pigment-based inks. An X-Rite spectrophotometer was used to compare L*a*b* values and reflectance spectra of the digitally …

Conservation And Structural Intervention Of A Writing Table, Karen Bishop Aug 2019

Conservation And Structural Intervention Of A Writing Table, Karen Bishop

Art Conservation Master's Projects

A wooden writing table from the Buffalo History Museum was received for conservation treatment at Buffalo State College to address an inherent structural issue. Longwave ultraviolet (UVA) induced visible fluorescence and reflected UVA imaging were utilized in addition to x-radiography to document the table’s condition upon arrival. An artist interview was conducted and referenced to help guide formulation of a treatment plan. Structural intervention was carried out to create new mortise-and-tenon joints which utilized laminated bentwood tenons. Surface accretions were removed and an overcoat of polyurethane varnish was applied to unify the damaged surface.

An In-Depth Technical Analysis And Treatment Of A Floral Still Life Painting, Elizabeth Robson Aug 2019

An In-Depth Technical Analysis And Treatment Of A Floral Still Life Painting, Elizabeth Robson

Art Conservation Master's Projects

A floral still life painting believed to be of Flemish origin was examined using a variety of imaging and analytical techniques to better understand its materials and history. A palette including lead white, vermilion, orpiment, and ultramarine was confirmed, and the glue paste lining was also analyzed. The provenance and attribution of the painting was researched extensively, and it was concluded that it is more likely French than Dutch, created in the late 17th or early 18th century. Finally, aesthetic and structural treatments were undertaken to clean and stabilize the surface, revealing additional original detail and colors.

Words As Weapons And Wisdom, Barbara Paige

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The Harlem Renaissance and the Black Arts Movement were two seminal eras in American history. The Renaissance also referred to as the New Negro Movement was a literary artistic, and cultural movement, centered in Harlem in which writers produced large bastions of literary works. African descended people began to identify with their African past and intellectuals adopted Black Nationalist and Pan-Africanist methodologies to overcome oppression. Their efforts laid a foundation for the Civil Rights movement. The Black Arts Movement, an era of intense literary artistic activism begun with the assassination of Malcolm X. Pioneers At The Edge Of Their Universe: Japanese Railroad Workers In Idaho And The Intermountain West, Julie Ann Vance Aug 2019

Pioneers At The Edge Of Their Universe: Japanese Railroad Workers In Idaho And The Intermountain West, Julie Ann Vance

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Although many scholars are aware of the history of Japanese Americans and their presence in the West Coast states, including their internment during World War II, few are familiar with the experiences of Japanese immigrants in Idaho and the surrounding Intermountain States. Little is written of the first Japanese who came to Idaho, Montana, Utah, and Wyoming at the end of the nineteenth century, or of the role of railroads in their moving inland. Because of this, scholars assume a similar experience of the Japanese in the Intermountain West with those who stayed on the West Coast. This thesis argues …

The Red Front Door, A Memoir, Camila B. Sanabria Aug 2019

The Red Front Door, A Memoir, Camila B. Sanabria

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This is a creative thesis that contains two components: 1) a critical introduction that defends the representation of mixed-status families and deportation narratives, and 2) a memoir that depicts my experience with deportation and as a member of a mixed-status family. The second component of this thesis will consist of the first four chapters of my memoir, with the remaining chapters to be completed post-graduation. These chapters take place the years before my parents’ deportation and the year immediately after. The memoir is a coming-of-age story that explores my ethnic identity, along with themes such as insider versus outsider. This …

Changing Access: Building A Culture Of Accessibility Within Normalized Technical Communication Practices, Sherena Huntsman Aug 2019

Changing Access: Building A Culture Of Accessibility Within Normalized Technical Communication Practices, Sherena Huntsman

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

As a field intricately connected to human experience and interaction, technical and professional communication (TPC) is historically, ethically, and practically tooled to address issues of equality, diversity, and access. While these important issues have not always been the focal point of TPC, the recent turn toward social justice has scholars asking critical questions about how users access information, how specific design practices may privilege some and disenfranchise others, and how we can be more inclusive across our communication practices. In this dissertation, I argue that it is within reach of TPC to address the specific problem of access—the gap between …

Thylacine Dreams: The Vernacular Resurrection Of An Extinct Marsupial, Daisy M. Ahlstone Aug 2019

Thylacine Dreams: The Vernacular Resurrection Of An Extinct Marsupial, Daisy M. Ahlstone

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This thesis explores the folk resurrection of the thylacine through artwork and symbolic interaction. The thylacine, better known as the Tasmanian tiger, is a marsupial that suffered a government-sanctioned massacre leading to its extinction in 1936. The thylacine’s status as a hidden animal has inspired what folklorists call “ostensive practice”; people not only actively seek out the thylacine in the wilderness of Tasmania today and share their sightings online, but they have also incorporated the thylacine as a symbol of hope and perseverance into various forms of folk art.

There have been upwards of five thousand documented sightings of the …

The Long Horizon, Tiffany Smith Aug 2019

The Long Horizon, Tiffany Smith

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The idea for my thesis stemmed from a braided essay I wrote for a creative writing class. I didn’t initially plan on expanding my class essay into a memoir, but I have discovered that oftentimes the story finds us rather than the other way around. Using the memoir form allowed me to bridge quite naturally the subjects of grief and landscape by giving me space to reflect on a turbulent period in my life and arrive at some sort of conclusion. While I could see the importance of the natural world in my life, I didn’t realize at first how …

"There Should Be No Tolerance For Intolerance": Internal Antagonism In Online Fan Communities, Michelle W. Jones Aug 2019

"There Should Be No Tolerance For Intolerance": Internal Antagonism In Online Fan Communities, Michelle W. Jones

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This thesis focuses on exploring cases of internal antagonism in fan communities, with a specific focus on the Steven Universe (2013 -) and Undertale (2015) communities present on Tumblr and Twitter. Internal antagonism is a phenomenon that occurs when a community targets a member within itself instead of outside itself, often as a way to mediate and regulate the community and reinforce its values. This thesis considers three case studies of internal antagonism with both physical and digital implications in order to better understand the role it plays in shaping and sustaining online fan communities as well as mediating the …

Heirs Of The Body And Heirs Of The Mind: Greek Education And Religious Agency In The English Reformation, Elisabeth Joan Cropper Aug 2019

Heirs Of The Body And Heirs Of The Mind: Greek Education And Religious Agency In The English Reformation, Elisabeth Joan Cropper

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This thesis studies elite men and women’s uses of Greek classical and early Christian texts in order to provide a more nuanced view of the relationship between knowledge of Greek language and the religious controversy between Catholics and Protestants in the English Reformation from 1516 to 1558. It addresses some of the misconceptions of Greek and its connection to Protestant heresy during the Reformation, while also explaining the ways that men and women used Greek in developing and maintaining individual religious identities in sixteenth century England.

This research illuminates the ways that Greek literature, reborn in Early Modern European society, …

The Perception Of Voice Onset Time By English-Speaking L2 Learners Of Spanish With An Extended Partial Immersion Experience, Jeremy Leigh Ingersoll Aug 2019

The Perception Of Voice Onset Time By English-Speaking L2 Learners Of Spanish With An Extended Partial Immersion Experience, Jeremy Leigh Ingersoll

Theses and Dissertations

For adult learners of a second language, the similarities and differences in acoustic properties between their native language and the language they are learning can affect how they perceive the sounds of the new language. How learners perceive these acoustic properties will directly affect their ability to communicate. According to the Perceptual Assimilation Model (PAM) (Best 1995), learners will perceive the sounds of a language that is new to them based on how similar or different the sounds are from the learner’s native language. Between the English and Spanish language, there are some sounds that share acoustic properties and others …

The Relationship Between Frequency Of Yoga And Meditation On Ptsd Symptoms In Individuals Who Have Experienced Intimate Partner Violence, Kimberly Polignani Aug 2019

The Relationship Between Frequency Of Yoga And Meditation On Ptsd Symptoms In Individuals Who Have Experienced Intimate Partner Violence, Kimberly Polignani

Dissertations

Intimate partner violence (IPV) has become a growing phenomenon in the United States,

affecting nearly 13% of the population. The adverse mental health outcomes from people who experience IPV are prevalent and more than half have a diagnosis of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Therefore, therapeutic techniques for PTSD appear to be feasible for IPV survivors and their mental health issues. Complementary and alternative medicine has become a widely accepted approach for PTSD. Being two complementary and alternative medicine techniques, yoga and meditation are effective forms of therapy in many diagnoses, including PTSD. This study utilized a not-for-profit organization called the …

Kabbala, Christians, And Jews: An Examination Of The Rise And Fall Of Peculiar Relationships That Developed Between Christian Elites And Jewish Scholars In Renaissance Italy, Glenda Leona Dannenfelser Aug 2019

Kabbala, Christians, And Jews: An Examination Of The Rise And Fall Of Peculiar Relationships That Developed Between Christian Elites And Jewish Scholars In Renaissance Italy, Glenda Leona Dannenfelser

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Italian Renaissance was to many of its contemporaries a golden age. It was unarguably a phenomenal time in European history. The sharing of intellectual ideas and innovations during this period permanently changed the world. Knowledge was spread across Europe at an unprecedented pace and intellectual minds were greatly expanded from both new and old discoveries. During this period, classical works were fortuitously unearthed and swiftly consumed for their hoary wisdom and guidance. Among these works were found ancient productions related to various occult ideas and practices such as alchemy and magic. A subset of the prominent group of Italian …

Was Rome Not Beautiful Too? Modern Germany And The Legacy Of Ancient Rome, Jason Charles Phillips Aug 2019

Was Rome Not Beautiful Too? Modern Germany And The Legacy Of Ancient Rome, Jason Charles Phillips

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

It has been over two thousand years since the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest (9 A.D.). What really happened at the battle is anyone’s guess. It is this silence that allowed for the Germans to appropriate this battle and turn it into a major moment of German history. In the modern German imagination this story became one of Hermann liberating the ancient Germans from the tyranny of Rome. This battle preserved the purity of the ancient Germans and prevented a Roman corruption of their world. From the rediscovery of Tacitus in the fifteenth century to the era of Hitler, ancient …

The South African Women's Movement: The Roles Of Feminism And Multiracial Cooperation In The Struggle For Women's Rights, Amber Michelle Lenser Aug 2019

The South African Women's Movement: The Roles Of Feminism And Multiracial Cooperation In The Struggle For Women's Rights, Amber Michelle Lenser

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In the historiography of South Africa’s recent past, focus has been most heavily placed on apartheid and the anti-apartheid movement, with much emphasis placed on male involvement and men as the primary agents of change in the country. Women are largely viewed as playing a supportive role to male activists throughout the movement, and far less has been written on female involvement or women’s activism in its own right. Running parallel to the anti-apartheid movement, however, was a women’s movement characterized by women across the racial and socioeconomic spectrum struggling to secure their own rights in a very hostile and …
