Broken Households: Black And White Baptists And Methodists In Transition In Post-Emancipation Texas, Timothy "Ashton" Reynolds Aug 2019

Broken Households: Black And White Baptists And Methodists In Transition In Post-Emancipation Texas, Timothy "Ashton" Reynolds

History Theses and Dissertations

The end of slavery in Texas and the South undercut more than just the economic, labor, and social foundations in Texas. It undercut doctrinal certainty for white Baptists and Methodists and called into question two of their most valued beliefs: the biblical legitimacy of slavery and the divine appointment of white (and male) supremacy. This thesis asks and attempts to answer the question of how white Baptists and Methodists reacted when they were no longer able to practice slavery as a legally sanctioned religiously underpinned institution. By examining denominational documents, church minute books, writings by influential Baptist and Methodist figures, …

Le Accademie Bolognese E Romana: Reconsidering Center-Periphery Pedagogy, James Hutson Aug 2019

Le Accademie Bolognese E Romana: Reconsidering Center-Periphery Pedagogy, James Hutson

Faculty Scholarship

This article seeks a reevaluation of the relationship between the Carracci Accademia degli’Incamminati and the Accademia di San Luca in Rome with regards to structure, goals and pedagogy. For although the perceived pedagogical goals of the Carracci, especially the prosaic Annibale, and the most well-known Scholastic academician associated with the Roman Accademia, Federico Zuccaro, have traditionally been viewed as conflicting, the early history of the academy in Rome can be seen to parallel the Bolognese. Each was established to address the uncertain and evolving nature of the profession seen in each city, leading to a demand for a new type …

Sudong Cheng Aug 2019

Sudong Cheng

Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

This paper argues that Sima Qian 司馬遷, author of Shiji 史記 (Records of the Grand Historian) implanted various expressive intentions into his autobiographic writing “Taishigong zixu” 太史公自序 (The Autobiography of the Senior Archivist) by applying a series of special writing techniques, including the delicate rewriting of Guoyu 國語 (Discourses of the States) and 沿孝經 (Book of Filial Piety), deliberate rendering of the mysterious number “five hundred years”, contradictions within his dialogue with Hu Sui, and reconstructions of the temporal and spatial backgrounds of Chunqiu 春秋 (Spring and Autumn Annals), Lushi chunqiu 呂氏春秋 (Master Lü’s Spring and Autumn Annals), Gufen …

Xu Hu, Meihui Liu Aug 2019

Xu Hu, Meihui Liu

Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

Wei Meng 韋孟 and Wei Xuancheng 韋玄 are well-regarded Lu shi 魯詩 scholars from the Western Han dynasty. Their poems also demonstrate their identity as classicists. In later scholarship, Wei Meng and Wei Xuancheng are often juxtaposed to highlight these achievements. An examination of “Zai zou shi” 在鄒詩 (Poem Written in Zou), a poem commonly attributed to Wei Meng, however, will reveal that Wei’s reputation of being a classicist and a poet has to do with the bureaucracy of Han dynasty principalities and consequently testifies against his authorship. Furthermore, the authorship of “Fengjian shi” 諷諫詩 (An Irony Poem), another …

Yin Jiang Aug 2019

Yin Jiang

Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

Qing jing jiaorong 情景交融 (fusion of scene and emotion) has been widely used in the area of Chinese studies, but it is an extremely ambiguous concept that has been understood in various ways. Aside from indicating the effect of an abstract condition, it does not provide any clues for interpretation or theoretical extension, insofar as its definition has stagnated at trite expressions such as “feeing merging with the scene” or vice versa. This paper postulates the concept, “fusion of scene and emotion,” is not only an aesthetic development that marks the maturity of the lyrical art in classical Chinese …

Xiaoting Xian Aug 2019

Xiaoting Xian

Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

During the process of dissemination through different kinds of media, Tang dynasty poems were frequently renamed and ended up having different titles. At the moment, there is limited systematic research on the variation of titles of Tang poems and the causes behind. This article will discuss the issue of varied multiple titles of Tang dynasty poetry and the corresponding causes from three perspectives, including the change of titles by editors of comprehensive (zongji 總集) and separate collections (bieji 别集), by others while making private copies, and through the adaptation of poems into music. Originated in the manuscript era, Tang …

Danjun Cai Aug 2019

Danjun Cai

Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

The development of Han shu 漢書 (Book of the Former Han) study in medieval China cannot be separated from the interpretations, research, and appropriations of Book of the Former Han in the northern areas of the Sixteen Kingdoms and Northern Dynasties. The popular stories from Book of the Former Han reconstructed the history of the Han dynasty needed in the new era then, thus laying a social foundation for the study of Book of the Former Han in the Northern Dynasties. In this period of multi-ethnic integration, the concepts of orthodoxy and Han-Yi ( non-Han people, “barbaric”) distinction were …

Chi-Peng Ho Aug 2019

Chi-Peng Ho

Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

Zeng Gong’s 曾鞏 guwen 古文 (ancient-style prose) is viewed as a direct successor to Ouyang Xiu 歐陽修 and is well regarded by the scholars from the Song to Qing dynasties. However, his readership declined since the Republican Era ( 1912 _ 1949) . In spite of the discussions on his work with continued appreciation, there lacks detailed analysis and treatise of the ways in which Zeng Gong succeeded Ouyang Xiu in terms of ancient-style writing. Ouyang Xiu’s ancient-style writing occupies two main aesthetic features, including, first of all, the tactful and wanzhuan 宛轉(euphemistic) writing style; second, the sentimental and …

Hong Zhang Aug 2019

Hong Zhang

Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

During the process of constructing Shangqing jing 上清經 (Shangqing School Scripture), Daoist Yang Xi 楊羲 created a mystical method of writing Daoist mystical excursion poems through planchette writing. Yang initiated created mystical excursion poems about fairies coming down to earth for love and marriage and about Daoists alchemy. Focused on Daoist practices, these poems changed the style of mystical excursion poetry to Daoist cultivation. On the description of fairyland, he praised a lively and bustling world of Daoist immortals in gaudy colors, and for the first time, depicted vividly the magical scenes of how Daoist alchemists create pills of …

Yunhe Xu, Qingxin Zheng Aug 2019

Yunhe Xu, Qingxin Zheng

Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

Wangji 妄稽 is a bamboo slip manuscript of Western Han collected by Peking University. It is a difficult literary text from the Han dynasty and has become a focal point in the area of bamboo and silk manuscripts studies since it was first published in 2015. This paper makes sixty-eight emendations to the annotated edition of Wangji from three perspectives; (1) they correct the mistakes in the character recognition made in the past; (2) they further investigate and study the characters and sentences that are yet to be recognized or seemly unrecognizable; (3) they revise the punctuations of some …

The Scientific Romances Of Jules Verne And H.G. Wells: Imperialism Disguised As Progress In The Early Days Of Science Fiction, Timothy Ferris Aug 2019

The Scientific Romances Of Jules Verne And H.G. Wells: Imperialism Disguised As Progress In The Early Days Of Science Fiction, Timothy Ferris

Theses and Dissertations

Frequently in their respective oeuvres, Verne and Wells write in a rhetoric of conquest that almost always translates to discovering a more efficient means of taming wild, non-European environments. These goals extend not only to the lands that their protagonists explore, but also to human beings and other life that may populate them. Indeed, the underlying focus—the one that is masked behind the thrill and adventure of both Wells and Verne—is none other than the march of progress as understood by middle-class Europeans in the latter half of the nineteenth century. Progress can produce positivistic optimism, and it can also …

"Queen Of Kings": Masculinity And Femininity In The Visual Rhetoric Of Cleopatra Vii And Augustan Distortions Thereof, Allen Alexander Kendall

Theses and Dissertations

To address every aspect in which Cleopatra VII asserted her right to rule and maintain the favor of her own subjects and of Rome would be far too large a task for anything less than a book-length treatment. Rather than attempt to address multiple issues, this thesis addresses just one aspect of Cleopatra's political strategy to visualize her legitimacy as ruler: namely a combination of masculine and feminine elements in her iconography. This thesis will then follow the same themes in elements of Cleopatra's visual rhetoric was seized upon by the poets of Augustan Rome, who used it to the …

Female Experience Of Trauma And Mourning In Two Postconflict Novels Of El Salvador And Peru: Roza, Tumba, Quema By Claudia Hernández, And La Sangre De La Aurora By Claudia Salazar, Raquel Castro Salas

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on how literature approaches the Salvadoran and Peruvian armed conflicts and contributes with perspectives of the female experience while offering illustrations of mourning processes. It is based on a close analysis of two postconflict novels that emerged after the publication of the corresponding truth commissions final reports. These novels are Roza, tumba, quema (2017) by Claudia Hernández from El Salvador, and La sangre de la aurora (2013) by Claudia Salazar from Peru. The contributions studied in this analysis focus on two areas: (1) a problematization of the female experience of the armed conflicts, and (2) a focus …

Virtual Dissection Of White Matter Tracts In A Human Brain Using Applied Game Design And Virtual Reality Imaging, Basil Lim, Anurag Nasa, Nicola Carswell, Elena Roman, Malia Kissner, Darren W. Roddy, Veronika O'Keane, James Carswell

Other

Visualisation of neural tracts in the human brain has previously been accomplished using two dimensional (2D) representational formats. In most cases, pre-operative visualisation is through the medium of 2D MRI image slices, representing coordinates in the brain through a combination of axial, sagittal, and coronal orthographic viewpoints. Software such as ExploreDTI can visualise off-axis viewpoints, however this method is limited to 2.5D image representations. The use of such 2D representations can require significant training in order to contextualise real-world 3D positions and accurately locate and identify neural tract pathways in the brain. Utilising anonymised tract data and advanced neuroimaging technologies …

Moving Beyond ‘Therapy’ And ‘Enhancement’ In The Ethics Of Gene Editing, Bryan Cwik Aug 2019

Moving Beyond ‘Therapy’ And ‘Enhancement’ In The Ethics Of Gene Editing, Bryan Cwik

Philosophy Faculty Publications and Presentations

Since the advent of recombinant DNA technology, expectations (and trepidations) about the potential for altering genes and controlling our biology at the fundamental level have been sky high. These expectations have gone largely unfulfilled. But though the dream (or nightmare) of being able to control our biology is still far off, gene editing research has made enormous strides toward potential clinical use. This paper argues that when it comes to determining permissible uses of gene editing in one important medical context—germline intervention in reproductive medicine—issues about enhancement and eugenics are, for the foreseeable future, a red herring. Current translational goals …

Horse Racing During The Civil War: The Perseverance Of The Sport During A Time Of National Crisis, Danael Christian Suttle Aug 2019

Horse Racing During The Civil War: The Perseverance Of The Sport During A Time Of National Crisis, Danael Christian Suttle

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Horse racing has a long and uninterrupted history in the United States. The historiography, however, maintains that horse racing went into hiatus during the Civil War. This simply is not true. While it is true that horse racing saw a decline in the beginning of the war, by the time the war ended, the sport had risen to similar heights as seen before the war. During the war, the sport was enjoyed by both soldiers and civilians. In the army, soldiers would often have impromptu camp races. As the war continued on, camp races became frowned upon by officers. The …

‘The Healing Hand Laid On A Great Wound:’ The Elberfeld System And The Transformation Of Poverty In Germany, Britain, And The United States, Rebekah O'Zell Mcmillan

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation employs a transnational analysis to focus on historical perceptions of poverty and the development of private and public welfare in the modern era. This research places the emergence of early poverty relief schemes within a broader transatlantic context by studying the relationships among social reformers in Germany, Great Britain, and the United States. This work has two primary objectives. First, it focuses on the Elberfeld Poor Relief System a nineteenth and early twentieth century German innovation emphasizing local poor relief and community responsibility, which transformed poor relief into an efficient structure. Second, the Elberfeld System was instrumental in …

Open Educational Resources

In this class, the second of a two-course sequence in the Pathways Required Core, we’ll explore how language and other meaning-making symbols reflect the Gramercy neighborhood, home to Baruch College, particularly during the Gilded Age (1870s-1914). We’ll read literature of the period by authors with ties to this neighborhood, and study the 1913 Armory Show (which was held across the street at the 69th Regiment Armory), which blurred, challenged, and disrupted the social lines of Gilded Age New York.

A Kingdom Of Co-Inherence: Christian Theology And The Laws Of King Magnus The Lawmender Of Norway, 1261-1281, Dillon Richard Frank Knackstedt

Masters Theses

This thesis explains a new interpretation of the law books written during the reign of King Magnus the Lawmender of Norway (1239-1280, crowned 1261, r.1263-1280). In the process it also teases out common themes in Norway’s early histories, Iceland’s early laws, and biblical exegesis and re-writes much of what is assumed about “church” and “state” in this era, beginning at Magnus’ coronation and ending with the fraught year following his death, 1281.

According to the new interpretation explored in these four chapters, the laws of Magnus the Lawmender were not an attempt at royal legitimization of the king’s exclusive right …

Multiperspectivity Through Alternative History In The Classroom, Anggita Parameswari Latif

Graduate Masters Theses

This paper aims to evaluate existing teaching approaches in middle school history classrooms that incorporate alternative history materials. Alternative history focuses on the question of what might have happened differently, or ‘what if?’ The study focuses on addressing the following question: How does the understanding of one event’s significance on the chain of historical occasions contribute to students’ engagement in discussing past and current conflicts, based on teachers’ points of view? Interviews with 10 education practitioners focused on exploring the ways students can learn to see history creatively while developing tolerance. Existing approaches are explored through the viewpoints of conflict …
