Contradictions Of Freedom In The Tempest And The Brief Wondrous Life Of Oscar Wao, Menaka Serres
Contradictions Of Freedom In The Tempest And The Brief Wondrous Life Of Oscar Wao, Menaka Serres
Theses and Dissertations
In William Shakespeare’s The Tempest (1610-1611) and Junot Diaz’s The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao (2007) the character negotiate contradictions of freedom: the entitlements that justify violence as well as oppression on the one hand and rights that grant access to emancipation from violence and imposition on the other.
From Mourning To Monuments: How American Society Memorialized The Dead After 1945, Eugenia M. Wolovich
From Mourning To Monuments: How American Society Memorialized The Dead After 1945, Eugenia M. Wolovich
Theses and Dissertations
The following four memorials — the World War II Memorial in The Fens in Boston, the Brooklyn War Memorial in Cadman Plaza Park, the Pennsylvania Railroad World War II Memorial in the 30th Street Station, and the East Coast War Memorial in Battery Park — suggest that mid-twentieth century commemorative architecture possessed defining characteristics that differentiated them from monuments of the previous era and from each other. These unique qualities make it difficult to define this architectural period in a unified way because multiple forms of memorials arose in the wake of World War II.
Who Is My Neighbor? The Importance Of Global Education For Kinesiology Students, Jessica D. Ventura
Who Is My Neighbor? The Importance Of Global Education For Kinesiology Students, Jessica D. Ventura
Movement and Being: The Journal of the Christian Society for Kinesiology, Leisure and Sports Studies
The parable of the Samaritan in the Gospel of Luke illustrates that helping others requires both the ability to reach out to any person and the humility to receive mercy from any person. This active love requires a basic understanding of culture and the ways in which it may affect the values and actions of others. As believers seeking to express God in careers that bring them in contact with any person, kinesiology students have a specific need to understand their global neighbors. This paper first explores the importance of multicultural education as illustrated in the book of …
Nature And The Poet: A Comparision Of The Poetry Of Joseph Freiherr Von Eichendorff And Kobayashi Issa, Jane Cox
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis examines the bearing that metaphysical philosophy about nature has on two late 18th century and early 19th century poets. Although living in different hemispheres and cultures, the works of Romantic poet Joseph Freiherr von Eichendorff and haikai Kobayashi Issa both used interactions with nature to illustrate their own personal experiences. However, their differing metaphysical beliefs concerning nature impacted their presentation of their experiences as well as their experiences themselves. Eichendorff viewed nature as a medium through which the divine can choose to communicate. Nature’s purpose is to act as a vehicle for the divine. His descriptions …
Midwifery And Society: A Comparative Analysis Of The Uk And Ussr From 1920-1950, Melissa Scott
Midwifery And Society: A Comparative Analysis Of The Uk And Ussr From 1920-1950, Melissa Scott
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The purpose of this project is to analyze the changes made in midwifery policy and practices in the Soviet Union and the United Kingdom from 1920-1950. The changes made were essentially the following in both countries: required state certification, standardization of pay and schooling, and combating tradition in rural areas. Although they made similar changes, their political ideology and rhetoric was significantly different from one another. The rhetoric used in the Soviet Union in discussing midwifery policies and responsibilities was nationalistic while the rhetoric used in the United Kingdom was much more functionalistic. There were also additional political and societal …
Gustav Mahler: An Honorary Secessionist, Grant Estes
Gustav Mahler: An Honorary Secessionist, Grant Estes
Music: Student Scholarship & Creative Works
Gustav Mahler’s artistic philosophy was closely related to that of the Secessionists in fin-de-siècle Vienna. His work, both as the director of the Imperial Opera and as a composer, was based on the idea that art should be paramount over personal, sociological, and historical influences. Thus, Mahler should be viewed as an honorary Secessionist who, though personally distant from the Secessionist movement, continually sought higher artistic standards and freedom. This essay will focus on the first movement of Mahler’s Sixth Symphony and contemporary criticisms of the work to better understand both Mahler’s music and the environment in which he worked.
Create And Remunerate: Schoenberg’S Business Acumen And His Op. 16, Joel Padgett
Create And Remunerate: Schoenberg’S Business Acumen And His Op. 16, Joel Padgett
Music: Student Scholarship & Creative Works
Like many composers, Arnold Schoenberg faced financial difficulties throughout his life. However, little work exists discussing the emotional effect Schoenberg’s economic hardship had on him and his compositional style. This paper will discuss Schoenberg’s business acumen from 1900–1910 and the role his financial hardships played in his transition into his Expressionist period. It will also include a discussion on the relationship between Schoenberg’s Expressionism and the notion of a modern piece of music, relying primarily on an analysis of the modern characteristics in Farben from Schoenberg’s Five Pieces for Orchestra.
