Joining The Choir: Religious Membership And Social Trust Among Transnational Ghanaians, By Nicolette D. Manglos-Weber, Justin Kh Tse
Joining The Choir: Religious Membership And Social Trust Among Transnational Ghanaians, By Nicolette D. Manglos-Weber, Justin Kh Tse
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Nicolette D. Manglos-Weber’s Joining the Choir is about how trust works in a transnational Ghanaian evangelical community, Evangel Ministries, between Chicago and Accra. The title is drawn from the opening anecdote in which Manglos-Weber speaks to a “colleague” at church. They are both in the choir together, and they talk about the difficulties of the interviewee’s life in Chicago as someone on leave from graduate school and driving a taxi. This anecdote showcases Manglos-Weber’s positionality as an ethnographer: she is among the trusted, a status that she deftly maneuvers within throughout the book. In so doing, Joining the Choir is …

Living Like A Dog: Can The Life Of Non-Human Animals Be Meaningful?, Michael Hauskeller
Living Like A Dog: Can The Life Of Non-Human Animals Be Meaningful?, Michael Hauskeller
Between the Species
Most philosophers addressing the issue of meaning in life seem to think that non-human animals cannot have a meaningful life because only humans have what it takes to do so. In this paper, I discuss three prominent philosophical theories of meaning in life, all of which implicitly or explicitly deny non-human animals the possibility of living a meaningful life. I will argue that none of them is convincing and that we should embrace a more comprehensive and inclusive understanding of meaning in life that allows for non-human lives to be meaningful and in their own right worth living.

Changing Life Value And Demographic Change In Contemporary Japanese Society, Mikihiro Moriyama
Changing Life Value And Demographic Change In Contemporary Japanese Society, Mikihiro Moriyama
Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
Japan has experienced a rapid decrease in population. The main reason for this distorted demography (called Shoushi Koureika in Japanese) has been caused by a reduction in the number of children. Another reason is the extension of human lifespan. This rapid demographic change has caused social issues such as lack of workforce, an increase in the social security revenue and a reduction in the number of schools. The Japanese government has tackled these social problems and its effort has had an effect to some extent, but the hard work needs to continue. In this article, I try to explore reasons …
Global Eras And Language Diversity In Indonesia: Transdisciplinary Projects Towards Language Maintenance And Revitalization, James T. Collins
Global Eras And Language Diversity In Indonesia: Transdisciplinary Projects Towards Language Maintenance And Revitalization, James T. Collins
Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
Indonesia is immensely proud of its hundreds of regional languages. This amazing diversity occurs because of the social impact in the three global eras: ancient migration from Asian continent, trading intensification and colonial oppression five hundred years ago, and demographical and communication change in the 21st century. However, now we are witnessing the number decrease of the languages in Indonesia. The resistance and preservation of the inherited languages, which are local languages, in the Indonesian archipelago (Nusantara) language network that is indeed complex must be considered as important components in the Indonesia’s national identity. Along with the accelerated loss of …

At the end of the nineteenth century until the beginning of the twentieth century, International tourists have begun visiting the Dutch East Indies and Malaya. Therefore, guidebooks about the Dutch East Indies and Malaya were published for travellers and tourists. Using the historical method, this article discusses which information, how and why the information presented in the early tourist guidebooks. The result shows that the guidebooks provide various information not only about the objects that can be visited, but also about natural scenery, peoples, culinary, flora, fauna, and customs in the regions. They presented in a long narrative and practical …
A Cognitive Perspective On The Arabic Spatial Noun فوق /Fawqa /Applying The Principle Polysemy Model, Zaqiatul Mardiah, Afdol Tharik Wastono, Abdul Muta’Ali
A Cognitive Perspective On The Arabic Spatial Noun فوق /Fawqa /Applying The Principle Polysemy Model, Zaqiatul Mardiah, Afdol Tharik Wastono, Abdul Muta’Ali
Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
The present paper provides a cognitive linguistics (CL) framework for analyzing the semantic structure of Arabic spatial noun fawqa based on Principled Polysemy Model (PPM) of Tyler and Evans (2003). PPM approach can broaden the narrow view of classical cognitive linguists regarding the semantic variation in the concept of physical- geometry of a preposition. As a polysemous lexeme, fawqa used by Arabian native to express a broad range of meanings, not only spatial relation but also non-spatial relation. The substantial sense of the lexeme is investigated using a large amount of corpus data (corpus.kacst.edu.sa) and applying the five steps of …

Pirates, Merchants, And A Small Battle On The Island Of Kythira In The Later Middle Ages, David D. Terry
Pirates, Merchants, And A Small Battle On The Island Of Kythira In The Later Middle Ages, David D. Terry
The Hilltop Review
Merchants in the later medieval Mediterranean crossed boundaries both geographical and moral. In November 1327 two Mallorcan investors complained to the king’s court that their ship, which they had sent to the eastern Mediterranean laden with tradable goods, had been ransacked by the violent natives of Kythera, an Aegean island at that time ruled by Venice. The Venetians, always conscious of maintaining good trade relations, sent representatives to the island and conducted a full investigation. After interviewing the islanders, the duke of the island sent his conclusions back to Venice: the Catalan “merchants” had come ashore on the island and …
Royalist Propaganda: Fabrication Of Magna Farta, Daniel R. Palthe
Royalist Propaganda: Fabrication Of Magna Farta, Daniel R. Palthe
The Hilltop Review
This paper examines the perception and usage of Magna Carta in interregnum England. The central question is whether or not Oliver Cromwell ever referred to this royal document as the "Magna Farta." While one of the most common posthumous charges against him was a disdain for Magna Carta and English rights, accounts of his calling it a "Magna Farta" are questionable. The ways in which the Magna Carta was actually used under Cromwell rather seems to indicate a different opinion. Essentially, this paper compares royalist propaganda with the Commonwealth's accounts.

Theorizing About The Self In Panpsychism And The Extended Mind Using The Dao De Jing (道德經) And Zhuangzi (莊子), Ryan Lemasters
The Hilltop Review
In this paper, I begin by briefly showing how the problem of self has been understood and approached historically in Western philosophy. I follow this by focusing on some of the recent literature in the philosophy of mind that suggests that the self is extended, meaning it is not solely located within the boundaries of the brain (Clark and Chalmers 1998). It will be evident that this is in conflict with the traditional Western understanding of the self. Since it seems to be the case that there are strong arguments for endorsing the view that the self is extended (to …

Is Love A Ladder? Reading Plato With Leonard Bernstein, Joshua T. Parks
Is Love A Ladder? Reading Plato With Leonard Bernstein, Joshua T. Parks
The Hilltop Review
This paper reads Leonard Bernstein's Serenade after Plato's "Symposium" as a careful interpretation of and commentary on Plato's text. While a straightforward reading of Diotima's speech in Plato's Symposium suggests that human relationships are merely an instrumental step toward higher loves, Bernstein's music emphasizes the intrinsic goodness of interpersonal love. The connections between the two works have been dismissed as superficial by critics, but Bernstein's piece is actually carefully engaged with the narrative structure of Plato's text. It therefore encourages a re-reading of Plato's dialogue in which its form shapes and complicates its meaning. By depicting in music the interpersonal …

Ilya Repin In Paris: Mediating French Modernism, Allison Leigh
Ilya Repin In Paris: Mediating French Modernism, Allison Leigh
Department of Visual Arts
This article explores the development of a singular painting by Russia’s most famous realist painter, Il’ia Repin. First exhibited under the title Un café du boulevard, the work was conceived during Repin’s stay in Paris from 1873-75. Repin himself described the work as “the main types of Paris in their most typical place,” but what he produced proves a departure for the young artist not only in terms of its Parisian subject matter. Careful analysis of Repin’s letters and the work itself show him searching for a stylistic language that had universal translatability in this moment, one that he importantly …

Aimee Semple Mcpherson’S Pentecostalism, Darwinism, Eugenics, The Disenfranchised, And The Scopes Monkey Trial, Margaret English De Alminana
Selected Faculty Publications
This article posits that the cultural battle waged by Aimee Semple McPherson in concert with William Jennings Bryan over evolution and modernism was largely focused on a popular social theory linked to eugenics. On July 21, 1925, in the city of Dayton, Tennessee, a twentieth-century watershed event became a harbinger of the age: The State of Tennessee v. John Thomas Scopes, popularly known as the Scopes Monkey Trial. The public remembers the event as spotlighting the fundamentalist-modernist controversy with respect to the teaching of evolution in the public-school curriculum against the protests of fundamentalist Christians who advocated Creationism. The …

Mastering sentence structure for English Education Master’s Program (EEMP) students is obligatory considering their level of education as graduate students, who would become English teachers, lecturers, or researchers in the future. Therefore, major errors in constructing English sentences are no longer expected to happen at this level. This study investigated grammatical errors in sentences produced by EEMP students in their weekly written reflections in their Educational Psychology class. Fifty reflections of the first semester of EEMP graduate students were collected from assignments given by the lecturer of Educational Psychology class. This research employed document analysis as the method and the …
