Sensorial Intermedialities In Roman Letters: Cicero, Horace, And Ovid, Jonathan E. Mannering Sep 2019

Sensorial Intermedialities In Roman Letters: Cicero, Horace, And Ovid, Jonathan E. Mannering

Classical Studies: Faculty Publications and Other Works

In recent years, much progress has been made towards elucidating the function of ekphrasis in Roman epistolography, especially with relation to the writings of Seneca and Pliny. Following on from these precedents, this article mines the epistles of three prominent Roman letter-writers, Cicero, Horace, and Ovid, for their intermedial elements. The motifs of oral quotations, handwriting, and human tear stains, which interweave the sources analysed, are shown not only to straddle the borders between distinct media, but also to engage with multiple senses as a result of their multiple medialities. Oral quotations integrate speech into written texts and thus necessitate …

Gothic Nature Revisited: Reflections On The Gothic Of Ecocriticism, Tom J. Hillard Sep 2019

Gothic Nature Revisited: Reflections On The Gothic Of Ecocriticism, Tom J. Hillard

English Literature Faculty Publications and Presentations

The 2017 ‘Gothic Nature I’ conference in Dublin, Ireland, and the launch of the new journal Gothic Nature: New Directions in Ecohorror and the EcoGothic present an occasion to reflect on how the entangled fields of ecocriticism and Gothic literary studies have developed and evolved over the past decade. While ecocritics have historically been slow and at times reluctant to embrace Gothic texts and approaches, in recent years that has begun to change. This essay argues that the development of ecocriticism itself can been read as a type of Gothic story. If imagined figuratively as if it were a horror …

Marching For Change: Intersectional Coalition Building, Counter Voices, And Collective Action At The U.S. Women’S March On Washington And Beyond, Wendy A. Burns-Ardolino

Journal of Interdisciplinary Feminist Thought

This study of the U.S. Women’s March on Washington engages a feminist cultural studies lens to examine my own participant observations and multiple lived accounts published by women in open blogs, op-ed pieces, and online articles to produce a critical analysis of collective resistance and action. Photos from the march offer a gritty core sample of American cultural identities in terms of race, class, gender, sexuality, ability, ethnicity and religion with marchers standing shoulder to shoulder in coalition against misogyny, heterosexism, white supremacy, xenophobia, and the very real threat to recognizing women’s rights as human rights. Drawing on the strength …

All Access: A Backstage Pass To A Collaborative, Undergraduate Music Journal, Michele Gibney, Keith Hatschek, Nicole Wasnock

Conservatory of Music Faculty Presentations

The number of currently publishing, student run music journals can be counted on one hand. And of those, only half are for undergraduates. At University of the Pacific, the Conservatory of Music started a music industry analysis and opinion journal in 2018. Edited and written by undergraduate students, Backstage Pass has published two issues totaling 47 papers. The benefits of journal writing, editing, publishing and hosting are numerous from many different stakeholder points of view. The collaborative effort is shared between the University Libraries (hosts the institutional repository where the journal is published and offers technical support) and the Conservatory …

Christian History As World History: A Review Essay, Joel Carpenter Sep 2019

Christian History As World History: A Review Essay, Joel Carpenter

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

This review essay discusses the status of “World Christianity” as a field of study, then highlights the features of the book at hand. It is an exercise in world history more than church history, focusing on how Christianity in various parts of the world responded to the twentieth century’s greatest challenges. The book addresses the rise of millenarianism and fundamentalism, neo-orthodoxy, liberation theology, Pentecostalism, and ecumenism. But its more intent focus is on how Christianity addressed the century’s world wars, colonialism, nationalism, secularism, rise of radical Islam, human rights, migration, and the growing power of the state.
