A Comparison Of L1 And Esl Written Feedback Preferences: Pedagogical Applications And Theoretical Implications, Tyler Carter, Suthathip Thirakunkovit

Journal of Response to Writing

This study explores the perceptions of first-year composition (FYC) students toward written teacher feedback and compares the preferences of L1 English and international ESL writers. We used an online questionnaire to collect both quantitative and qualitative data. The first part of the questionnaire consists of 43 Likert items regarding teacher feedback in the context of a selected argumentative essay, and the second part consists of two open-ended questions regarding students’ opinions on teacher feedback. A total of 345 FYC students participated in the study. Our results show that both L1 and ESL writers prefer feedback that offers directions for improvement …

As the number of refugee students increase each year, many language teachers find themselves uninformed and ill-equipped to effectively engage refugee students in the classroom. Thus, through a survey and synthesis of the current body of research, the following literature review seeks to present the specific needs of refugee students and suggest practical ways in which language teachers can effectively meet those needs and engage refugees in the language classroom. The findings suggest that though the pre-migration, trans-migration, and post-migration experiences present numerous physical, emotional, behavioral, cultural, social, and academic challenges to refugee students in the classroom, teachers can combat …

The goal of this project is to promote diversity within beauty and continue the push for representation and inclusivity. I conducted research on the history of makeup in America during the 1900s and studied how the makeup industry has evolved into what it is today. Rihanna’s launch of Fenty Beauty in 2017 was seen as the start of a new era, challenging beauty brands to be more inclusive. As Fenty created a new industry standard of 40 shades, many other brands followed suit. I then compared my findings with the experiences of real women in my community. I interviewed 10 …

In its 1982 opinion in Plyler v. Doe, the Supreme Court held that a state could not deny undocumented children living within its borders a public and free K-12 education. This Note argues that Plyler’s protections extend to publicly-funded early childhood education programs that serve children between the ages of three and five. Due to the broad support of researchers, educators, and the general public, early childhood education programs funded by local, state, and the federal governments have become an integral part of a comprehensive public education today. The increased public exposure to the experiences of Latinx unaccompanied children seeking entry at the United States southern border has revealed the lived reality of the nation’s pernicious immigration laws. The harrowing experiences of unaccompanied children are amplified by their interaction with a legal system plagued by a legacy of systemic racism and sustained racial caste. While immigration law currently affords minimal legal protections for these children, in application, the law continues to fall egregiously short of providing for the safety of unaccompanied children. The objective of this project is to demonstrate understanding of Illustrator and basic design principles. Create artwork for a set of four postcards that function as a series. Each card should be sized to print at 4.25 x 6” with 1/8” bleed. The postcards should engage and inspire the viewer to visit locations that we can’t reach by today’s travel means –– imaginary places or an existing location that we can’t reach just yet or any longer.

While Patron-Client dynamics may seem strange to Westerners, characteristics of that system are shared by the cultures of the New Testament and the Makua-Metto people of Mozambique. The way that the Gospel of Matthew presents God as Father points to the social realities of the time which highlighted God’s role as Patron. This line of thinking resonates with the Makua-Metto and provides a powerful way of communicating about God to a folk Islamic people.
